2021 NFL draft: What picks do Jets have left after trading up for Alijah Vera-Tucker?

Joe Douglas got himself a much-needed interior lineman, but trading up for Alijah Vera-Tucker cost the Jets some draft capital.

Joe Douglas got himself a much-needed interior lineman, but trading up for Alijah Vera-Tucker cost the Jets some draft capital.

After picking Zach Wilson second overall, the Jets sent their 23rd, 66th and 86th picks to the Vikings for the 14th and 143rd selections. Douglas used the 14th pick on USC’s Vera-Tucker, who the GM said was one of the best players on New York’s board.

“We felt we had a unique opportunity to get a top-10 player in our minds,” Douglas said.

Vera-Tucker figures to be an immediate starter at left guard. New York, meanwhile, now enters Day 2 of the draft without a third-round pick. As the board stands, their only Friday selection is at No. 34, the second pick of the second round.

Of course, that could change with another trade. For now, here’s a list of every remaining pick the Jets have in the draft.

2021 NFL draft: Jets among 4 teams with multiple first round picks

Jets Wire takes a look at the three other teams with multiple first-round draft picks entering the 2021 NFL draft.

With the 2021 NFL draft now less than a week away and the Jets armed with draft capital, Joe Douglas will have numerous opportunities to land players who can be key cogs in New York’s rebuild next season and beyond.

Two of those opportunities will come on the first day of the draft, as the Jets are currently in possession of multiple first-round draft picks. The latter of those picks came courtesy of last offseason’s Jamal Adams trade, which sent the disgruntled All-Pro safety to the Seahawks in exchange for two first-round picks and a third-round selection.

The Jets are not the only team who boast more than one first-round draft pick entering Thursday, though. Here is a look at every team — New York included — that currently has multiple first-round picks.

Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Jets, Jags stay still after close games

The Jets and Jaguars almost won both their games this past week, but both found ways to lose.

The Jets and Jaguars were close to getting wins this week, but in the end both teams found ways to lose.

New York was up 28-24 on Las Vegas with 13 seconds left in the game when former Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams sent an all-out blitz, leaving undrafted rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson on Henry Ruggs III. Ruggs III hit him with a double move and Jackson bit, leading to a 46-yard touchdown to give the Raiders the win.

Jacksonville, meanwhile, had a chance to get a win in overtime against the Vikings. However, Mike Glennon threw an interception and the Vikings capitalized with a game-winning field goal.

With both teams losing, they remain in the same spots as they were entering Week 13. The Jets control the No. 1 pick, while the Jaguars own the No. 2 pick.

Cincinnati has the No. 3 pick at 2-9-1, while the Los Angeles Chargers have the No. 4 pick with a 3-9 record. Dallas currently holds the No. 5 pick at 3-8.

Let’s take a look at the rest of the first-round draft order for the 2021 NFL draft.

Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Jaguars nearly give Jets breathing room

The race for the top pick in the 2021 NFL draft has come down to the Jets and Jaguars.

The Jets were nearly handed a gift from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While the Jets were crushed 20-3 by the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the Jaguars almost pulled out a victory over the Cleveland Browns. Jacksonville lost 27-25 to Cleveland and were a two-point conversion away from possibly forcing overtime.

So with the Jets and Jaguars both losing, there’s still a one-game separation between the two teams in the race for the No. 1 pick in the draft. New York sits at 0-11, while Jacksonville is at 1-10. The only other team with a chance at catching the Jets and Jaguars is the Cincinnati Bengals.

They are 2-8-1 on the year and are 2.5 games back of the Jets for the top pick with five games left to play. The Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers are three games back with a 3-8 record, while the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers are 3.5 games back with records of 3-7-1 and 4-8, respectively.

Here’s a look at where the first round of the 2021 NFL draft stands after Week 12.

Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Who trails Jets after New York’s bye week?

The Jets still have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

The 0-9 Jets are the only winless team in the NFL, so they still have control of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft following their bye week.

There was some change in the top 10, though, and the 1-8 Jaguars are a game behind New York after losing to the Packers, 24-20. The Giants, meanwhile, are no longer in the top five thanks to a two-game winning streak.

These next seven games are going to determine where the Jets end up picking in next year’s draft. If the Jets finish 0-16, they’re a lock to get the No. 1 overall pick. Just one win could jeopardize that, though.

With that being said, here’s what the first round of the 2021 NFL draft looks like after Week 10.

1.  New York Jets (0-9)

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-8)

3. Washington Football Team (2-7)

4. Dallas Cowboys (2-7)

5. Los Angeles Chargers (2-7)

6. Miami Dolphins (from Houston, 2-7)

7. Cincinnati Bengals (2-6-1)

8. New York Giants (3-7)

9. Carolina Panthers (3-6)

10. Atlanta Falcons (3-6)

11. Denver Broncos (3-6)

12. San Francisco 49ers (4-6)

13. Detroit Lions (4-5)

14. Minnesota Vikings (4-5)

15. New England Patriots (4-5)

16. Chicago Bears (5-5)

17. Cleveland Browns (6-3)

18. Tennessee Titans (6-3)

19. Philadelphia Eagles (3-5-1)

20. Arizona Cardinals (6-3)

21. New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks, 6-3)

22. Miami Dolphins (6-3)

23. Indianapolis Colts (6-3)

24. Baltimore Ravens (6-3)

25. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams, 6-3)

26. Las Vegas Raiders (6-3)

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3)

28. Buffalo Bills (7-3)

29. Green Bay Packers (7-2)

30. Kansas City Chiefs (8-1)

31. New Orleans Saints (7-2)

32. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-0)

Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Jets maintain No. 1 pick after narrow loss to Pats

The New York Jets are still all in for the tank following their 30-27 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday night.

The Jets are still in control of the No. 1 pick following their 30-27 loss to the Patriots on Monday night.

New York fell to 0-9 on the year and maintained its 1.5-game lead over the Jaguars for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. Had the Jets won on Monday, they would have only been ahead of the Jaguars for the top pick by a few strength of schedule percentage points.

The Jets still control their own destiny to land the top pick in next year’s draft. If they lose out, then they’re guaranteed to have the No. 1 overall pick. If the Jets just so happen to win a game, it could ruin their chances of getting the top pick and presumably Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

Here’s where the first round of the 2021 NFL draft order stands after Week 9 of the NFL regular season.

1.  New York Jets (0-9)

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-7)

3. Dallas Cowboys (2-7)

4. New York Giants (2-7)

5 Washington Football Team (2-7)

6. Los Angeles Chargers (2-7)

7. Miami Dolphins (from Houston, 2-6)

8. Cincinnati Bengals (2-5-1)

9. Carolina Panthers (3-6)

10. Atlanta Falcons (3-6)

11. Detroit Lions (3-5)

12. Minnesota Vikings (3-5)

13. New England Patriots (3-5)

14. Denver Broncos (3-5)

15. San Francisco 49ers (4-5)

16. Chicago Bears (5-4)

17. Cleveland Browns (5-3)

18. Indianapolis Colts (5-3)

19. Philadelphia Eagles (3-4-1)

20. Arizona Cardinals (5-3)

21. Miami Dolphins (5-3)

22. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams, 5-3)

23. Las Vegas Raiders (5-3)

24. Tennessee Titans (6-2)

25. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-3)

26. New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks, 6-2)

27. Baltimore Ravens (6-2)

28. Buffalo Bills (7-2)

29. Green Bay Packers (6-2)

30. Kansas City Chiefs (8-1)

31. New Orleans Saints (6-2)

32. Pittsburgh Steelers (8-0)

Report: Jets trade LB Jordan Willis to 49ers

The Jets are trading Jordan Willis to the 49ers for a future draft pick.

Joe Douglas has struck his second trade of the week.

According to multiple reports, the Jets are sending linebacker Jordan Willis and a 2021 seventh-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round pick.

New York now has three sixth-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft with its own, Tampa Bay’s and San Francisco’s. Over the next two drafts, the Jets have 18 total draft picks.

Following Sunday’s game against the Dolphins, the Jets traded Steve McLendon and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Buccaneers for a 2022 sixth-round pick.

After playing in nine games last season, Willis only played 42 total snaps for the Jets this year and failed to record a single tackle. He has been inactive over the last three games.

Willis was a third-round pick out of Kanas State in 2017 by the Bengals. He lasted two seasons in Cincinnati before the Jets claimed him off waivers in 2019. For Willis’s career, he has 52 total tackles, three sacks and a pass breakup.

With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, don’t expect this to be Douglas’ last trade, as he appears to be cleaning house in order to load up on future draft capital.

With Quincy Enunwa’s release, Rex Ryan’s Jets are extinct

There are no players left from any of Rex Ryan’s teams following Quincy Enunwa’s release.

Quincy Enunwa was the last man standing from the Rex Ryan era, but his release put a close on that chapter of Jets football.

The Jets moved on from Enunwa on Monday after six seasons with the organization. The wide receiver was already going to miss the 2020 season due to a lingering neck injury.

Enunwa was drafted by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of the University of Nebraska. He emerged in 2015 when he had 315 receiving yards in 12 games. Enunwa broke out in 2016 when he recorded 857 receiving yards and four touchdowns. However, his NFL career was derailed by neck injuries, first in 2017, then in 2019 and now again in 2020. There’s a chance he never plays football again.

Enunwa’s release also means that the Jets no longer employ any players who played for Rex Ryan. Prior to Sunday, Brian Winters was only other player remaining from Ryan’s teams, but he was let go on and has since signed with the Bills. Ryan coached the Jets from 2009-2014 before he was fired.

Enunwa’s release also means that all of John Idzik’s draft picks are no longer with the team. The Jets now have zero picks on the team from before the 2016 NFL Draft. They have one player from the 2016 draft, Jordan Jenkins, and one player from the 2017 draft, Marcus Maye, still with the team. New York still has four of its players from the 2018 draft and five from the 2019 draft.

All these draft picks that are no longer with the team shows how poorly the Jets have drafted this decade. It also shows hows Joe Douglas has overturned New York’s roster in his first year as Jets general manager.

If he hopes to turn the tide this decade, he will have to be a much better drafter than his predecessors.

John Idzik’s draft picks essentially all gone after Jets release Brian Winters

John Idzik only has one draft pick left on the Jets following the release of Brian Winters.

Two players from the John Idzik era remained on the Jets’ roster before the team decided to cut Brian Winters on Sunday. Now only one is left — and he’s not even going to play in 2020.

Winters was officially cut by the Jets on Sunday. The move saved the Jets $7.2 million in cap space.

Idzik, now a consultant for the Jaguars, picked Winters out of Kent State in the third round of his first-ever draft as Jets GM in 2013. Winters became a fixture on New York’s offensive line for seven years and one of just a few good picks made by Idzik.

Winters started in 79 of the 89 games he played in for New York. He only played in six games in 2014 due to a torn ACL. In 2017, Winters missed three games because of an abdomen injury. Last season, Winters was out for seven games because of a shoulder injury.

Idzik was a poor drafter in his two years as Jets general manager. Of Idzik’s 19 total draft picks, only six are still in the NFL. That includes Winters, Quincy Enunwa, Oday Aboushi, Geno Smith, Dakota Dozier and Sheldon Richardson. Enunwa remains the lone Idzik draft pick under contract with the Jets, but he will miss the 2020 season due to another neck injury. There is a strong possibility his career is over.

In other words, not a single Idzik pick will play for the Jets this year.

First-round pick Mekhi Becton signs rookie deal with Jets

The Jets’ first 2020 draft pick was the last one to sign, but Mekhi Becton has put pen to paper.

Mekhi Becton is officially a Jet.

New York and the 11th overall pick came to terms on his rookie deal Monday. Becton’s contract is for four years with a fifth-year option. It is worth a fully guaranteed $18.45 million, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Becton, who made it known he was in New Jersey on Monday, will likely be the Jets’ starting left tackle when they take the field Week 1. The Louisville product gives Sam Darnold a mountain of a man protecting his blindside; Becton is listed at 6-foot-7, 363 pounds. Becton has quick feet and plenty of athleticism despite his frame. He brings versatility if needed as well after playing both tackle positions at Louisville.

Now Becton will join an offensive line that has been completely remade in Joe Douglas’ image. The rookie could be one of five new starters in the trenches for New York after last year’s unit failed to offer much pass or run protection.

Becton is already a formidable run-blocker. The Jets are banking on his raw skill and size when it comes to developing him into an elite pass-blocker as well.
