Jets sign Lamar Jackson to active roster, place Chris Hogan on IR

Jets signed Lamar Jackson to active roster and placed Chris Hogan on injured reserve.

After suffering a high ankle sprain on Sunday against the Cardinals, Chris Hogan will be out a few weeks.

New York announced on Tuesday that it has signed Lamar Jackson to the active roster and placed Hogan on injured reserve. The Jets also signed WR Josh Malone to the practice squad and used a practice squad protection on QB Mike White.

Hogan was a late signing in training camp and emerged as a starting wide receiver due to all the injuries at the position. On the year, Hogan has 14 receptions for 118 yards.

As for Jackson, he has been up from the practice squad the last two games. He’s recorded eight tackles and one pass defense in two games. Jackson was given a tough task this past week against DeAndre Hopkins, who recorded him six catches for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Malone spent the first four games with the Jets before his release. He totaled four catches for 16 yards in four games. White has been serving as New York’s backup when Joe Flacco or Sam Darnold have been hurt.

Jets rookie follows Le’Veon Bell’s Twitter lead after Adam Gase’s odd explanation of minimal use

Adam Gase doesn’t want to stunt the growth of La’Mical Perine after he saw zero offensive snaps on Sunday against the Cardinals.

La’Mical Perine isn’t playing for his own good. At least that’s the way Adam Gase explained the rookie running back’s minimal usage.

Perine got zero offensive snaps in the Jets’ 30-10 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. He only saw six snaps total for the game, all of which came on special teams. When Gase was asked on Monday why Perine didn’t see the field on offense, the coach’s response was that he doesn’t want to put “too much” on Perine’s shoulders and “stunt his growth,” per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes.

In total, Perine has received just 40 offensive snaps on the year. Compared to other Jets running backs, Perine is second-to-last in offensive snaps. Frank Gore leads all Jets running backs with 137 offensive snaps, followed by Le’Veon Bell with 78 offensive snaps. Kalen Ballage, who is no longer with the Jets, is third with 57.

Perine clearly wasn’t happy about not seeing the field on Sunday or with Gase’s explanation, as he liked a tweet that criticized his head coach’s reasoning.

Bell did something similar on Sunday, liking tweets about getting traded and not getting the ball enough in the passing game. Bell was only targeted once by Joe Flacco on Sunday. Gase said he would prefer that Bell take his complaints directly to him, but that didn’t stop Perine from expressing his own frustrations in the same way.

It’s doesn’t make much sense that the Jets are using Perine so scarcely — or not at all. Now 0-5 and uncompetitive in every game they’ve played, the Jets should be seeing what a young player like Perine has to offer. Now is the time to find out if he can be part of the team’s future, even if that future doesn’t involve Gase.

Bell and Gore are not going to be a part of that future, either. So there’s no reason why a 22-year-old running back, who the Jets used a third-round pick on, should not see the field at least once on offense.

Jets injury report: Hogan suffered high ankle sprain, Darnold & Becton up in the air

Jets wide receiver Chris Hogan suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals.

Chris Hogan is the latest Jets wide receiver to go down with an injury.

Adam Gase spoke to the media on Monday and said that Hogan suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. However, the Jets are still waiting on additional tests to see if it’s more than just a high ankle sprain.

As for Sam Darnold and Mekhi Becton, Gase said it’s still wait and see for their shoulders. Gase added that he’ll know more about where they’re at when the team practices on Wednesday.

Jets off to worse start in Adam Gase’s second year than his first

The Adam Gase era is getting worse before it gets better.

The Adam Gase era is getting worse before it gets better.

Gase is off to a worse start in his second year as Jets head coach with an 0-5 record compared to his 1-4 record last season. Not only is the Jets’ record worse this year, but they also haven’t shown any progress in 2020.

In the Jets’ first five games of the season, they’ve lost by at least two possessions in every single game. New York has also lost by double-digits in four of its five losses, including its latest loss against Arizona, 30-10.

It’s a poor reflection on Gase that his team is getting off to these slow starts in back-to-back years. Last year was more understandable given that Sam Darnold was out for three of the first five games with mononucleosis.

This year, though, the Jets don’t have the same excuse. Yes, injuries have hurt them badly, but to look this bad in five games is inexcusable. Gase’s offense is one of the league’s worst in nearly every category, including scoring (31st), total yards per game (32nd) and passing yards per game (32nd).

The Jets defense makes boneheaded mistakes whether it’s penalties, blown assignments or missed tackles almost every single week. They also have fallen off under the helm of Gregg Williams.

Overall, the last year-plus has been a disaster under Gase’s watch. If it doesn’t get any better over these next 11 games, then Gase could find himself on the open market come the end of the season.

Jets schedule changes: New York to play Dolphins in Week 6, Chargers in Week 11

The New York Jets had two of their games switched around as part of the NFL’s schedule changes.

The New York Jets had two of their games switched around as part of the NFL’s schedule changes.

The NFL announced that the Jets will play at the Miami Dolphins in Week 6 at 4:05 p.m. ET instead of playing at the Chargers. The game against the Chargers is now scheduled for Week 11 at 4:05 p.m. ET in Los Angeles. The Jets’ bye week was moved from Week 11 to Week 10 as a result of the changes.

The league made sweeping changes to the schedule due to the Titans and Patriots having games postponed because of COVID-19-related issues. The NFL is doing all it can to have all the games played even if it means switching around opponents and bye weeks.

If COVID-19 becomes more of an issue around the league, the NFL may have to consider making up games at the end of the season. The league can only continue to switch around games for so long.

So make sure to mark the Jets’ schedule changes on your calendar. New York is in Miami next week and in Los Angeles in Week 11.

Jets first known team to punt twice on 4th & 1 in game’s first 5 minutes

The Jets offense continues to make history, but not in a good way.

The Jets offense continues to make history, but not in a good way.

New York became the first known NFL team to punt twice on 4th and 1 in the first five minutes of a game on Sunday, according to Pro-Football-Reference. Pro-Football-Reference’s database is only complete as far back as 1994.

On the Jets’ first drive of the game against the Cardinals, they were close to getting a first down on a pass to Jamison Crowder. However, he fell about a half-yard short, leading to a punt. On the Jets’ second offensive drive, they needed a yard for the first down, but Jeff Smith dropped an easy ball. Again, it led to another punt.

With Joe Flacco under center for the first time all season, the Jets offense is clearly still not in a rhythm in Week 5.

Jets activate Le’Veon Bell off injured reserve after three-game absence

The Jets activated Le’Veon Bell off injured reserve after he missed the last three games with a hamstring injury.

After a three-game absence caused by a hamstring injury, Le’Veon Bell will make his return against the Cardinals on Sunday.

The Jets activated Bell off injured reserve after he spent the last three weeks on it with a hamstring injury. New York also signed Jimmy Murray to the active roster and promoted Mike White and Lamar Jackson from the practice squad. Alec Ogletree and Josh Malone were both released.

Bell should be a boost to a Jets’ running game that has struggled so far in 2020. As a team, the Jets are averaging 98.5 rushing yards per game, good for 26th in the league.

Murray will serve as an extra offensive lineman with Mekhi Becton listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game. White will be the backup quarterback behind incumbent starter Joe Flacco.

Jackson made his debut last week against the Broncos and two tackles and a pass breakup. He’ll be needed if Bless Austin can’t go, as he is listed as questionable with a calf injury.

Jets vs. Cardinals: Mekhi Becton, Breshad Perriman doubtful for Week 5

Mekhi Becton and Breshad Perriman are listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

The Jets will likely be without two key offensive players on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Mekhi Becton (shoulder) and Breshad Perriman (ankle) are listed as doubtful for Week 5 after both didn’t practice this week. Becton wasn’t supposed to play last week against Denver until Chuma Edoga went down with an injury and was forced to come in the game. Becton lasted all of 16 snaps before the pain was too much.

For Perriman, this will be the third consecutive game that he’s out.

Bless Austin (calf), Ashtyn Davis (groin), John Franklin-Myers (foot), Chris Hogan (ribs/knee) and Jordan Jenkins (shoulder/calf) are all listed as questionable.

Sam Darnold was already ruled out with a right shoulder sprain. Joe Flacco will get the nod at starting quarterback.

As for the Cardinals, OLB Devon Kennard will not play. S Chris Banjo, TE Darrell Daniels and DT Jordan Phillips are questionable for Arizona.

Adam Gase upping the intensity at Jets practice

Adam Gase has intensified his practices after the Jets 0-4 start.

Adam Gase decided to spice things up a bit in practice this week.

In preparation for this week’s scheduled game against the Arizona Cardinals, Gase had the team doing competitive drills right from the start of practice. With the Jets 0-4, Gase knows something needs to change.

“We get the blood flowing a little quicker than normal,” Gase said, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “Not recommended by sports science, but at this point, we’re going to do everything we can.”

The Jets have also done more walkthroughs and have expanded their meetings. Gase said that the players have come forward with ways to improve practice, which he called “outstanding communication.”

While Gase is praising his players for more insight on better ways to prepare for a game, he also said that “everyone has to put forth more effort” in order to get out of this 0-4 hole.

In the past couple of weeks, Jets players have publicly stated that the team’s practices were not intense enough. Both Avery Williamson and Bradley McDougald stated that the practices started off slow.

At the end of the day, a team is as only as good as it practices. Clearly, the Jets weren’t practicing well the first four weeks and that showed in their four losses. We’ll see if a change leads to different game results.
