College Football Playoff announces schedule changes for the 2020-21 season

The playoff announcements will come a couple of weeks later than usual.

College football fans will have to wait a couple of extra weeks to find out if their team will be in the playoff.

On Wednesday, the College Football Playoff sent out a press release stating that there will be some schedule changes for the 2020-21 season.

From the release:

“The College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee will release its final rankings of the 2020-21 season Sunday, December 20, executive director Bill Hancock announced. The top four teams will participate in the Playoff Semifinals Friday, January 1, in the Rose Bowl Game and Sugar Bowl. The national championship game will be played Monday, January 11, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
The final rankings were originally scheduled to be released Sunday, December 6. The CFP Management Committee made the change as a result of several conferences having moved their championship games to December 12, 18 or 19.
The committee’s final meeting of the season will be December 18-19-20 in Grapevine, Texas.  The CFP will announce the full schedule of this fall’s selection committee meetings at a later date.
“With recent schedule changes for the regular season, it makes sense for the committee to make its final rankings after the conference championship games, when it can get a complete picture of the season,” Hancock said.  “The selection committee members understand the need to be flexible as we all navigate uncharted waters this season, and this move will allow them to evaluate all the available information.”
The Management Committee also shortened the post-season travel time for teams.  The two teams participating in the CFP National Championship will arrive in Miami on Saturday afternoon, January 9, 2021 instead of the usual Friday evening arrival. With this change, media day, typically held on Saturday morning in the host city, will not take place this year. Details on virtual media availabilities will be announced at a later date. The Rose Bowl Game, Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl and Peach Bowl will follow a similar three-day schedule.
“In this unprecedented time, the Management Committee believes it is in the best interest for the health and safety of the student-athletes, coaches and staffs to complete their game-week preparation on campus, under the familiar protocols they will have used all season,” said Hancock. “This is an unfortunate consequence of the pandemic, but it is the right thing to do.”

It’s Friday, July 24 and today’s play of the day comes from the book of clean old fashioned hate – Georgia versus Georgia Tech in 2013.

One of the most exciting games of the classic series, the 2013 matchup featured 75 points and a walk-off touchdown in the second overtime. Georgia star running back Todd Gurley had a monster game, scoring three touchdowns, two of those in overtime.

After Tech’s turnover on downs, it was Georgia’s turn in the second overtime – any points would win the game for the Bulldogs.

First-and-10 from Georgia Tech’s 25-yard-line, Gurley takes an inside hand-off and beats the defense to the end zone for the score and the Georgia win.

There are 50 days until Georgia is scheduled to kick off versus Virginia in Atlanta on Sept. 7

Georgia guard, No. 50, Warren Ericson is a redshirt sophomore from Suwanee, Georgia.

In 2019, Ericson saw action in six games and started at right guard against Baylor in the Sugar Bowl. Part of Georgia’s 2017 No. 1 ranked recruiting class, Ericson was rated as the No. 12 guard and the No. 5 center out of North Gwinnett High School.

Because of former Georgia guard Cade May’s transfer to Tennessee and Ben Cleveland’s history of injuries, Ericson should see plenty of game time in 2020.

It’s Tuesday, June 14 and today’s play of the day is from Georgia versus Florida in 2012.

Florida, then ranked No. 2, was looking to stay undefeated when it faced 10th-ranked Georgia, but a stingy Georgia defense and this huge play by the Bulldog offense sealed the upset win for Georgia at EverBank Field.

Georgia held a one-point lead and faced a critical third down from the Florida 45-yard-line late in the fourth quarter. Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray stood in the pocket and delivered a strike under pressure to receiver Malcolm Mitchell, who somehow found the end zone.

The Bulldogs won 17-9 after Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones forced the game-ending Florida fumble.

NCAA reaches decision on 2020 eligibility for Georgia QB JT Daniels

USC transfer quarterback JT Daniels has released the NCAA’s decision regarding his eligibility for the 2020 season. Details here

Per his Twitter, former USC quarterback JT Daniels, who recently transferred to Georgia, has been granted immediate eligibility from the NCAA for the 2020 college football season.

“Thank you to the NCAA for granting me immediate eligibility and allowing me to play football this fall. I will not comment on the waiver or transfer, but look forward to a great 2020 season with my teammates.”

The news comes two months after Daniels announced his commitment to the Bulldogs. The former 5-star out of Santa Ana, California was the No. 6 prospect in the 2018 recruiting class and the No. 3 rated quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields.

In 2018, as a freshman at USC, Daniels threw for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He entered the transfer portal in mid-April after his 2019 sophomore season was derailed by a knee injury. USC’s Kedon Slovis stepped in while Daniels was down and played well for the Trojans, making the transfer portal one of the only options for Daniels – reminiscent of the Eason/Fromm situation.

The Bulldogs are set with Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman as signal caller for 2020, but it’s great to know that Daniels will be available if something were to happen. Hopefully he will get some meaningful snaps to help prepare him to compete with 2021 5-star quarterback Brock Vandagriff for the starter position next season.

The game was tied 7-7 early in the third quarter when Georgia defensive back Damian Swann recovered a Georgia Tech goal-line fumble and returned it 99-yards to the house to give the Bulldogs the lead.

Somehow Tech was able to squeeze out a win in OT 30-24, but I still remember this play by Swann as one of the most unbelievable plays I’ve seen in Sanford Stadium history!
