When many college football fans think about the Oregon Ducks, they think of offense. Thanks to Chip Kelly and his revolutionary blur offense that took the sport by storm just over a decade ago, Oregon has been synonymous with 40-second touchdown drives and blowouts that let third-string players see the field before halftime.

Despite that, the Ducks have a rich history when it comes to the defensive side of the ball. From guys like Haloti Ngata to Dave Wilcox,  and Mel Renfro to Patrick Chung, Oregon’s record books are littered with talents that often went on to the NFL level and made a name for themselves.

Earlier this week, we started a new series at USA TODAY by looking back at the all-time roster for Oregon’s offensive starters and backup. We continue that series now with a look at the all-time defensive starters and backups who played in Eugene.

Michigan football is arguably the most storied program in all of college football.

The Wolverines have not only incredible tradition, but were an integral part of college football’s past, along with its present. From the winged helmets, inventing college football’s ‘platoon’ system (separate players playing offense and defense), touching the banner, and being the all-time wins leader, there’s a lot to like about the maize and blue. But what about those who actually wore the uniforms? Who were the best?

That’s a loaded question, of course. We came up with Michigan’s all-time roster, not necessarily deciding who had the best career while they were in Ann Arbor, but who is the overall best (meaning, to some degree, we’re factoring in NFL production).

Here is who we picked to start and back them up on the defensive side of the ball.

Over the past few weeks, we have been busy putting together our all-time roster for the Tar Heels, focusing on the best players in history for the program on offense, defense, and special teams. We picked a starter and a backup for each position.

Alabama has had stellar players come through Tuscaloosa to play for the Crimson Tide. Some of the most impressive of the long list of stars are members of the defense.

Whether it’s members of the secondary making spectacular plays and racking up big-time stats or defensive linemen that established themselves as legendary run-stoppers, the Crimson Tide has it all.

Drafting an All-Time defensive roster for Alabama is no easy task and there will be some who disagree. Nonetheless, here are the all-time starters and backups for the Crimson Tide defense.

As the birthplace of college football, Rutgers certainly has a long history in the game. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much to celebrate for many of those years.

That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t strong players to have come through the Rutgers program over the years. And while there might be a recency bias to these lists (over half the selections on offense came after 2000 and specifically during the Greg Schiano era), the story of Rutgers football has been written by individual talents who have given their all for the state university.

Take a look at the top offensive players to have come through Rutgers football over the years. There is a surprise or two on the list for sure!

If you could go into a lab and find a way to revive any Ohio State football player from history to field a team of the best at each position during their college careers, what players would you pick? That’s the exercise we went through in picking an all-time roster for a program that has more than a few iconic players to choose from.

In other words, not every all-time roster is created equal, and you’d be hard-pressed to find one as good as what you could throw out there in a flurry of scarlet and gray accolades.

But back to the task at hand? Who would you pick to round out an-all time roster including starters and backups? Would you agree with what we came up with here on Buckeyes Wire?

There are tough decisions to make, and some very, very, very good players that didn’t quite make the cut. We started with the offensive side of the ball and will also bring you the defense as well as the coaches and specialists.

A program with a long, rich history, Clemson has seen a lot of great teams with a lot of incredible talent over the years as the program has developed into a marquee name in college football.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Tigers have had some exceptional players who have helped Clemson achieve greatness. From the freshman who led his team to a national championship in Trevor Lawrence to Jerry Butler and “The Catch,” Clemson has seen some remarkable offensive talents come through the program.

Becoming a premier program more recently under current head coach Dabo Swinney, Clemson has seen many of the program’s best offensive talent suit up for the Tigers in the past couple of decades.
