Chargers’ offense needs rapid red zone improvement

The Chargers haven’t been able to close out games, but they also haven’t been able to score points.

The Los Angeles Chargers have found nearly every single way in the book to lose games. Each of their losses has been within seven points or less.

How are the Chargers getting so close to winning contests, but struggling to come out on top? One of the biggest issues that has required detailed attention all season, but has not improved is the Bolts’ inability to score points in the red zone.

It just so happens that’s where two of their games were lost — running back Melvin Gordon’s fumble vs. Titans and quarterback Philip Rivers’ game-ending interception against the Chiefs.

The team has been by haunted within their opponent’s 20-yard line by turnovers and simply settling for field goals, which is why the Chargers are No. 22 in scoring this year, averaging just 19.8 points a contest.

Through 12 games, the offense currently has a red zone efficiency of 46.34%, which is 26th in the league, per Team Rankings. For comparison, last year they had a percentage of 64.41%, which was eighth-best in the league.

“I think when you go back and look at certain things,” Steichen says. “Obviously, you want to put our guys in the best position. Sometimes, they make a play, but obviously, we have to do a better job of looking at what we’re doing. Whether it’s the situation where we’re running it or we’re throwing it.

Obviously, it’s a cat-and-mouse game when you’re playing against defensive coordinator. You might think he’s going to be in a two-deep shell and then he plays man. There’s that we have to do a better job of self-scouting and trying to see what they’re going to be in,” offensive coordinator Shane Steichen said on red zone woes.

One of the biggest issues is that they aren’t utilizing the right players. Wide receiver Keenan Allen is getting the majority of the looks, but it’s nearly always short of the sticks on quick slants or flats.

Allen, who is the best receiver on the team, is nearly always getting open but he may not be the top option on third-down situations in the red zone.

You’d think that the Chargers would take advantage of wide receiver Mike Williams’ size and leaping ability to finally help him score for the first time this season on jump ball situations. But they haven’t and instead have used him on shorter routes or teams are sitting in his routes because Rivers will stare him down from the get go.

And then there’s tight end Hunter Henry. Henry has gotten a fair share of red zone looks, a few of which have resulted in touchdowns. But it’s not on a consistent basis and lately he’s been running posts or crossing routes, which means that Rivers will read the linebackers and if he doesn’t like it, he’s going elsewhere which hasn’t been working.

Another reason why the team hasn’t been able to find success when the field shrinks is because far too often they seem to forget about running backs Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler and rely heavily on Rivers to get the job done, especially within the five.

Lastly, which ties into all that’s been mentioned. Get creative with the play-calling to create mismatches and get players open. Despite this touchdown being just shy of the red zone, it shows what they need to do.

Ekeler and Gordon ran a route to the left, Gordon went into the flat and Ekeler on a wheel route up the sideline. It froze up the linebacker and Ekeler was wide open for the score.

The bottom line is that it’s puzzling that a team with so much talent on the offensive side of the ball has struggled to find an identity in the red zone. In order to be more efficient the Chargers need to do a better job with play-calling, route combinations to set up mismatches and run the ball more in tight quarters.

Giants’ Emlen Tunnell named to NFL 100 All-Time Team

New York Giants legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Emlen Tunnell, has been named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team.

New York Giants legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Emlen Tunnell, was named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team on Friday night, joining linebacker Lawrence Taylor as the first two members of Big Blue to make the cut.

Tunnell was one of 14 finalists at the safety position, joining Jack Christiansen, Brian Dawkins, Kenny Easley, Ken Houston, Paul Krause, Yale Lary, Ronnie Lott, Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, Johnny Robinson, Donnie Shell, Larry Wilson and Willie Wood.

“I thought watching, as a former receiver, some of the catches that he made, they were stunning,” Cris Collinsworth said. “Some of the interceptions that he made, he could do the one over the shoulder that is so hard, the high-point catches, and setting up wide receivers and quarterbacks to think that they were open. That’s what this guy was about because if it was in the neighborhood, it was his.”

Tunnell, the first African-American player to don Giants blue, played for the team from 1948-1958 before joining Vince Lombardi’s in 1959 for three seasons. Tunnell was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and a six-time All-Pro. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1950s and is a member of the Giants’ Ring of Honor.

Here’s what the Giants had to say:

Ignored in the NFL draft, Tunnell walked into the Giants’ office in 1948 and asked founder Tim Mara for a tryout. Thus he became the first African American to play for the Giants and eventually the first to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That is only part of the incredible story that is Tunnell, who suffered a broken neck at the University of Toledo, an injury so severe that both the Army and Navy rejected his efforts to enlist during World War II.

The Coast Guard finally accepted him and, following his service, he enrolled at the University of Iowa. He left the Hawkeyes after the 1947 season and recorded seven interceptions in his debut campaign in the NFL, returning one for a touchdown to help him earn the nickname “offense on defense.”

Tunnell played 11 seasons for the Giants and still holds franchise records with 74 interceptions and 257 punt returns. In 1952, Tunnell gained more yards on interceptions and kickoff returns than the NFL rushing leader did running the ball. He was named All-NFL four times and played in nine Pro Bowls. After finishing his career with the Packers, Tunnell had a record 79 interceptions. A key strut in the Giants’ famed “Umbrella Defense” of the 1950s, Tunnell was a member of the 1956 championship team with Big Blue and won another title with Green Bay in 1961.

The NFL will continue its reveal of the NFL 100 All-Time Team next Friday night.

Jarrett Allen doesn’t know if he’s ready for ‘New Lob City’ title

It seems DeAndre Jordan has found himself a new “Lob City” in Brooklyn.

If there’s one thing Brooklyn Nets fans are guaranteed to see on a game-to-game basis it’s a Spencer Dinwiddie lob to DeAndre Jordan or Jarrett Allen.

Now, that may be underselling it a bit. Because Dinwiddie usually throws up lobs like he’s playing an older version of NBA 2K — back when finishing at the rim with a dunk was automatic.

But why wouldn’t he use his teammates’ size and athleticism to their advantage? Dinwiddie’s approach has largely been effective for the Nets so far.

Of course, the alley-oop finishes lead to tons of social media hype. But the phenomenon has taken another step.

A few years back, Jordan was part of the Lob City Clippers, when he and Blake Griffin were constantly fed by Chris Paul.

Now that Jordan is in Brooklyn, has a new dunking partner and facilitator, the social media world is ready to call Brooklyn “New Lob City.”

After Friday’s win, Allen offered his thoughts on the new title:

We both wanna play. We both like dunking the ball. I already saw on Twitter, what, ‘New Lob City’? I don’t know if I’m at the Blake Griffin level, but we both wanna be out there and play our hardest.

  • When these teams meet, you should recall a Monday night battle in 2003 when Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison erupted for a giant comeback from 35-14 down with about seven minutes remaining.
  • The Colts head into this one with a 6-2-1 ATS mark across the past nine road games.
  • The Buccaneers enter 2-6 ATS across the past eight games overall, and they’re 0-5 ATS in the previous five contests at home.
  • The under is 5-2 across Indy’s past seven on the road, while going 21-5 in the next 26 games following a double-digit loss at home.
  • The Over has cashed in nine of the past 10 for the Bucs, while going 4-0 in the previous four at the RayJay.
  • Indy ranks fourth in rushing yards (139.0 YPG), and they’re ninth in the NFL against the run (101.8 YPG).
  • Tampa ranks fifth in the NFL in total yards (380.4 YPG), fourth in passing yards (284.2 YPG) and fourth in points scored (28.3 PPG).

Prediction

Buccaneers 31, Colts 23

Moneyline (?)

The Buccaneers (-176) are a moderate favorite, but you’re better off playing the spread. If you like the Colts (+145), they’re a much better value on the ML.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Bucs moneyline returns a $5.68 profit with a Tampa victory.

Against the Spread (?)

The BUCCANEERS (-3.5, +100) are laying three and the hook, and that’s always a worry for bettors. However, the way the Colts (+3.5, -121) looked last week with the Tennessee Titans marching the ball up and down the field, the Bucs look like a safe play at home.

Over/Under (?)

OVER 47.5 (-106) is a good play based upon Tampa’s struggles against the pass, and the solid passing on both sides. The Bucs held the Jacksonville Jaguars down last week, but posted plenty on offense. They won’t hold the Colts in check, as Indy is much more gifted, and they might get a big bump with Mack returning to the backfield, too.

Sixers vs. Cavs preview: Sixers look to get back on track at home

The Philadelphia 76ers return home by hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.

The Philadelphia 76ers had one of their more disappointing losses of the season on Thursday when they committed 21 turnovers in a loss to the Washington Wizards. Now, they will return home looking to erase the memory of that game when they welcome in the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Sixers and the Cavs have already met twice this season with Philadelphia winning both games and they will be looking to continue that streak on Saturday. They will also be looking to remain unbeaten at home on the season as they are 10-0 at the Wells Fargo Center.

It’s now time for the guide to Saturday’s game with your TV guide, injury report, storylines, and a prediction:

How to watch Sixers vs. Cavs:

  • Date: Saturday, November 7
  • Time: 7:30 p.m. EST
  • Location: Wells Fargo Center Philadelphia, PA
  • TV: NBATV, NBC Sports Philadelphia

Injury Report

  • Sixers: OUT: Joel Embiid(left hip contusion), Josh Richardson(right hamstring tightness)
  • Cavaliers: NOT YET SUBMITTED

Storylines

Harris frustrated with turnovers

The Sixers had a winnable game in front of them on Thursday night, but they continued to shoot themselves in the foot with silly mistakes and silly turnovers. Tobias Harris led Philadelphia with 33 points on the night, but he was visibly frustrated by the number of turnovers they accumulated.

“That’s something that’s been hurting us all year too,” Harris added. “Like we’ve known that, we’ve said it in practice that we’ll be better with our turnovers so that’s something we have to key in on going forward.”

Helping stars limit turnovers

Of the 21 turnovers, 15 of those came from Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, the team’s All-Star leaders. Embiid had eight turnovers that spoiled his 26 points and 21 rebounds stat line and Simmons’ seven turnovers belied his 17 points and 10 assists on the night. Coach Brett Brown was very upset with those numbers and he understands he must help his stars limit those issues.

“We’re always trying to help our two young guys,” said Brown. “I think Jo had eight, Ben had seven. You’re trying to help those guys get better. It’s not going to win anything, it won’t win any game that matters, let alone a regular-season game. It’s not going to put us in any position where we can close out a game. We have to do better in that area and I gotta help them.”

Prediction

As said in the past, the Sixers are just a different team at home. The passionate Philadelphia fans rally behind them and they just seem to play better in all aspects of the game. Without Embiid, the Sixers will have a handful trying to stop Thompson on the glass, but they will be able to play a bit of a faster pace. Expect the Sixers to take some frustration out on a team that had to travel after playing on Friday night.

Pick: Sixers by double-digits

Sixers vs. Cavaliers season series

Game 1 November 12: 98-97 Sixers

Game 2 November 17: 114-95 Sixers

Boomer Esiason accuses Jerry Jones of tampering, sabotaging Jets’ relationship with Jamal Adams

Boomer Esiason went on ESPN’s Rich Cimini’s podcat and accused Jerry Jones of tampering with the Jets’ relationship with Jamal Adams.

The past 48 hours haven’t been kind to Jerry Jones.

First, the Dallas Cowboys owner saw his team embarrassed on Thursday Night Football against a shorthanded, inferior Bears team. On Friday morning, Jones was subsequently bumped from a radio spot after continuously cursing on air.

Now, Jones is being accused of tampering and attempting to sabotage the Jets’ relationship with Jamal Adams, by none other than ex-Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason.

Esiason appeared on the Flight Deck Podcast with ESPN’s Rich Cimini and flat out accused Jones of attempting to tamper with multiple safeties. Not just Adams, but Earl Thomas too.

“I don’t trust Jerry Jones,” Esiason said. “He recruits players that are under contract with other teams by leaking potential trades to the media. That’s just plain wrong. He did it with Earl Thomas when he was with the Seattle Seahawks and I believe he did it with Jamal Adams and the Jets. It put the Seahawks and the Jets in a bad spot. Then the players react because they’re emotional and they don’t get it. Suddenly social media is all over them.”

Esiason accused Jones of leaking reports that the Jets were shopping Adams to the media. The Jets have said that they were merely listening to offers, which reportedly included ones from the Cowboys. With that information in circulation, Adams became upset and took to social media to show his displeasure. The Jets were forced to do damage control and have now since amended a strained relationship.

If what Esiason is asserting is correct, the NFL may have to investigate his claims.

This is what the current NFL policy on anti-tampering is:

“The purpose of the NFL Anti-Tampering Policy, as it applies to tampering with players, is to protect member clubs’ contract and negotiating rights, and, at the same time, to allow the intra-League competitive systems devised for the acquisition and retention of player talent (e.g., college draft, waiver system, free-agent rules under an operative collective bargaining agreement) to operate efficiently.”

The last time the NFL cracked down on tampering was back in 2015. The NFL disciplined the Kanas City Chiefs for a violation of the Anti-Tampering Policy relating to improper contact during the 2015 “Negotiating Period” with prospective unrestricted free agent Jeremy Maclin, then under contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Because of those impermissible contacts, Kansas City forfeited its third-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft and its sixth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft and paid a fine of $250,000. In addition, head coach Andy Reid was fined $75,000, while GM John Dorsey was fined $25,000.

A similar penalty could be on the horizon for Jones if the NFL is looking to make an example out of him.

Iman Shumpert, David Nwaba making Nets’ upcoming decision more difficult

The Nets have a decision to make with Wilson Chandler returning soon. The decision is a little more complicated than it first seemed to be.

On December 15, the Brooklyn Nets will essentially acquire a new player. Only, it’s a player they already have under contract.

The date marks then end of Wilson Chandler’s 25-game suspension for testing positive for the performance-enhancing substance Ipamorelin. Chandler’s suspension allowed Brooklyn to carry a 16th player on the roster, but the Nets can no longer do so when the forward returns.

With the extra slot, the Nets signed Iman Shumpert. But he’s not going anywhere. He’s been a vital defensive piece since he arrived.

David Nwaba might’ve been another candidate, but he’s changed the conversation, as well.

Kenny Atkinson praised the two of them following Friday’s win over the Charlotte Hornets:

That second unit, I thought, was fantastic. Started with Shump. Then David Nwaba, I thought, was really good. Then DeAndre [Jordan] was incredible tonight. They really picked it up, really got our energy going.

If Nwaba is a lock to stay — which it seems he is — the logical move is to part ways with one of their two-way players, Henry Ellenson or Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, then waive either Theo Pinson or Dzana Musa and re-sign whoever they waive to a two-way deal.

The 3 biggest matchups in Oklahoma-Baylor (Big 12 Championship)

The stage is set for a rematch. Here are the three biggest matchups between Oklahoma and Baylor in the Big 12 Championship game.

The stage is set for a rematch, and a rematch we get with all the postseason implications on the line.

No. 6 Oklahoma (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) and No. 7 Baylor (11-1, 8-1) will face off once again, but this time from inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for the Big 12 Championship.

The Sooners needed the biggest comeback in program history to down Matt Rhule and the Bears 34-31 the first time these two played on Nov. 16 at McClane Stadium in Waco, Texas.

Here are the three biggest matchups for Oklahoma as they try to win its fifth-straight Big 12 Championship and make the College Football Playoff against Baylor.

JAMES LYNCH VS. OKLAHOMA TACKLES

There’s no ifs, ands, or buts—Baylor defensive lineman James Lynch made life difficult for the Oklahoma offensive line the first time around.

How the Sooners choose to attack the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year will end up deciding how much success Oklahoma has in the run game, especially its bread and butter with the guard-tackle counter.

Lynch blew up most of the Sooners’ running game despite accounting for only three tackles in the first game. Oklahoma did enter R.J. Proctor at left tackle in that game, and the offensive line has looked to have hit its stride since.

LINCOLN RILEY VS. PHIL SNOW

The coordinator chess match we never expected to play a huge factor this season will get a second bout.

Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Snow had Oklahoma’s offense at a stalemate for much of the first half, sending all sorts of pressure that got Jalen Hurts on the move and uncomfortable. The Bears picked one ball off and were also delivering big blows to ball carriers all game.

Lincoln Riley countered Snow’s plan in the second half, getting the Oklahoma offense into good pass protections to pick up that pressure and finding one-on-one situations in Baylor’s defense. Jalen Hurts delivered his best performance of the season in the second-half to add to Riley’s adjustments, giving Oklahoma the final ingredients to its historic comeback.

How these two duke it out will be a major factor in the Big 12 Championship.

KENNETH MURRAY VS. BAYLOR RUNNING GAME

One thing is clear about the Oklahoma defense: When Kenneth Murray is flying around with his head on fire, his teammates feed off the energy.

Baylor had Oklahoma’s middle linebacker over pursuing running lanes, especially in the quarterback run game, for much of the first game between these two. Murray has been susceptible to that for much of his career, but I expect the Bears to give Oklahoma a healthy dose of the quarterback run game and inside zone concepts that have seemed to take the Sooners’ impact player in the middle out of the game.

How Alex Grinch has things schemed up for Murray will be important, but how sound Murray plays against the Baylor running game will be even more important. The Sooners need their superman to be superman with Baylor flashing Murray his kryptonite.
