Lorne Bowman Signs National Letter of Intent with Wisconsin Basketball

Lorne Bowman becomes the latest member in the 2020 recruiting class to sign his letter of intent to play for the Wisconsin Badgers.

Lorne Bowman

6’2″, 180, guard, Detroit, Mich. (St. Mary’s)

Bowman became the first commit in Wisconsin’s 2020 recruiting class when he made his verbal commitment to Wisconsin in November of 2018. Bowman made it official on Wednesday by signing his letter of intent to play for Wisconsin.

The Badgers are getting a talented playmaker who is able to not only create shots for himself but also for his teammates. Despite D’Mitrik Trice, Brad Davison, and Trevor Anderson being ahead of Bowman when he arrives on campus the trio will all be seniors. There may not be many minutes available to Bowman in his first year but it could be beneficial to him to see the floor as a true freshman to gain some valuable experience before he officially takes over once Trice, Davison, and Anderson have exhausted their eligibility.

Note: All quotes/stats provided by uwbadgers.com.

Bowman chose Wisconsin over other offers from: Iowa, Nebraska, Buffalo, Oakland, Toledo, and Valparaiso

Bowman’s Accolades: Four-star recruit by ESPN … ranked No. 94 in the ESPN 100 for 2020 … standout at St. Mary’s High School is a two-time Class A All-State honoree in Michigan, earning first-team honors in 2019 and honorable mention in 2018 … averaged 23.1 points and 5.1 assists per game during his junior season … averaged 22.5 points and 4.9 assists per game as a sophomore … in AAU, member of EYBL where he excelled at the Nike circuit, averaging 13.5 points and 3.6 assists through his first six games.

Gard on Bowman: “We are ecstatic to have Lorne join our Badger family. He’s the ultimate competitor, both on the court and in the classroom, and we can’t wait to begin working with him. It was evident early on that Lorne is exactly what we look for and he’s only continued to improve. Lorne plays at his own pace, always under control, giving his team whatever it needs in the right moments with a skillset that can turn from scoring guard to playmaker in an instant. He has a great ability to get the ball where it needs to be and can also create shots with his tremendous pull-up game. Lorne displays natural leadership, both by his extreme work ethic and also through his communication on and off the court.  Lorne and his family are a pleasure to be around and represent everything that being a Badger is about.”

Austin Rivers relishes father’s ejection as Rockets beat Clippers

Austin Rivers relished the role he played in getting his father, Clippers coach Doc Rivers, ejected late in Wednesday’s Rockets victory.

[jwplayer 8FhC9jll-z6KDnl0B]

Reserve guard Austin Rivers played a huge role in Wednesday’s Rockets victory over the Clippers in Houston by helping limit Los Angeles guard Lou Williams to an inefficient 8-of-22 shooting night.

On the other end of the court, Rivers contributed to the box score with 7 points in 34 minutes. He didn’t record an assist in the game, but he did have an unofficial one on the fourth-quarter ejection of his father, Doc Rivers, who coaches the Clippers.

With Doc coach miffed over a controversial call and yelling at the game officials, Austin laughed and repeatedly signaled for the officials to give his father a technical foul. Ultimately, they gave him two, and the younger Rivers smiled as his father left the court.

Immediately after the game, Austin clearly relished the moment:

I had to give him out of here. That made my night, though. I’m not gonna lie. We got the win, and my dad got thrown out. It’s good night.

Austin also had some fun with the situation on Twitter.

The Rockets (8-3) and Clippers (7-4) will actually meet once more before Thanksgiving, with the rematch set for next Friday, Nov. 22, in Los Angeles. That game will also be nationally televised on ESPN.

Christopher Johnson using whatever goodwill he has left on Adam Gase

Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson publically endorsed Adam Gase despite his 2-7 record, much to the chagrin of fans.

For better or worse, Christopher Johnson is hitching his wagon to Adam Gase.

The chairman and CEO stated Gase will remain the head coach in 2020 despite from fans and pundits alike calling for his firing.

“I want to assure you there will be no changes in coaches here,” Johnson told reporters Wednesday. “Adam has the trust of this team. He has the trust of Sam. He has the trust of (general manager) Joe (Douglas). He has my trust. He’s a good man. He’s a good coach.”

Johnson explained part of the reason for keeping Gase is continuity with Sam Darnold’s development. Johnson added that Gase’s first year can’t properly be evaluated due to a ridiculous amount of injuries to the team.

“Sam hasn’t been given the best opportunity to thrive,” Johnson said. “We’ve had so many moving parts on the offensive line that I think it has affected his ability to play as he would like. There’s a great deal of work to do. Everyone understands that. And we’re just getting started. But I feel really good about this team moving forward.”

It’s not surprising that Johnson isn’t planning on firing Gase after one season. While it would send a positive message to an angry and win-deprived fanbase, it could cripple the morale of a team that has yet to turn on Gase.

What is surprising, though, is how Johnson effectively gave a ringing endorsement of Gase despite the Jets’ 2-7 record and terrible statistical rankings. Even after a seven-point win over the equally-lowly Giants, the Jets rank 30th in points scored and 32nd in total yards. Even with a bevy of injuries, those numbers are atrocious; they’re nothing Johnson should be publicly praising.

It also sends a bad sign to Jets fans when you basically tell them you’re happy with the job Gase has done in 10 months. Objectively speaking, he’s been a terrible coach in the games he’s lost, and lucky in the games he’s won. He was pitched to fans as an offensive genius, but the Jets have only scored more than 20 points and put up more than 300 yards of offense twice all season. Darnold looks to have regressed and no player looks to have developed under Gase’s guidance. He even cost the Jets their starting inside linebacker by leaving Avery Williamson in a meaningless preseason game in which he tore his ACL.

It would have been easier for Johnson to take Le’Veon Bell’s approach and just continue preaching patience for the future of the team. Instead, Johnson is telling fans he believes Gase is that future, despite every indication that this won’t be the case.

“I understand it. I’m frustrated, too,” Johnson said when asked about fans’ frustrations. “Every player on this team hates to lose. … Losing is a whole new thing and it’s terrible and I want it to stay terrible. Who wants to get used to that? But I can assure you that this entire building is about getting this team to a better place.”

Almost three weeks ago Johnson was caught on camera criticizing the team before a loss to the Jaguars. The next week the Jets lost to the previously winless Dolphins. If Johnson wasn’t happy with the team before, what changed over the past few weeks for him to suddenly support his coach? The Giants win, though great for morale, wasn’t particularly impressive considering the defense blew a two-score lead and were a Jamal Adams fumble recovery for a touchdown away from losing.

This is less about Gase and more about a vote of confidence for the team moving forward. Though the Jets roster is bad and their season awful, there are still solid pieces surrounding Darnold. If players were also calling for Gase’s head, maybe Johnson would change his tune. But with players like Jamal Adams and center Jonotthan Harrison praising Johnson’s decision, firing Gase would decimate the morale of the team for the rest of the year and send the Jets into a bigger tailspin before moving back to square one this offseason.

“It shows [Johnson] has faith in coach Gase, like the rest of us do,” Harrison said. “It shows he sees the potential and he sees where this team is going. Instead of listening to the outside noise — Gase this, Gase that — he said, ‘I have total faith in coach Gase.'”

Adams, who at one point refused to talk to Gase and Douglas after trade rumors, also backed Gase: “That’s our head coach and that’s who we ride with.”

Johnson doesn’t have the best track record as an owner. His hands-on approach and seemingly genuine interest in player causes — a drastic contrast from his brother, Woody — made a strong first impression, but he’s 11-30 since taking over in 2017. He let Mike Maccagnan build the roster through the 2019 offseason and played a role in overpaying for free agents. Gase could be yet another mistake in the Christopher Johnson era, and that’s probably not something he’d like to admit after only 10 months.

“It’s said that you are what your record says you are, and that’s not very impressive,” Johnson said. “But looking forward, I think it’s going to be a good team. I have so much faith in Adam and Joe to put together a great future for us.”

We’ll see about that.

UFC Fight Pass 500 Moments video: Before Jorge Masvidal, there was ‘Bang’ Ludwig

The UFC recently held its 500th live event, and the organization is marking the occasion with a list of 500 Unforgettable Moments.

UFC 244 marked the promotion’s 500th live event, and the organization is marking the occasion with “an internally curated list of 500 Unforgettable Moments from UFC history.”

Scheduled to be released in seven installments, UFC Fight Pass 500 Moments shines a spotlight on some of the most memorable highlights – and lowlights – from the UFC’s 26-year run, both in and out of the cage.

UFC Fight Pass officials have committed to sharing video of a few of those key moments with MMA Junkie, as well. With Jorge Masvidal currently one of the biggest stars in the sport, not to mention the owner of the UFC’s fastest knockout, let’s relive the record he broke, set by longtime MMA veteran and current Bang Muay Thai head instructor [autotag]Duane Ludwig[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 3 on Jan. 16, 2006.

UFC.com’s Walker Van Wey finds a way to describe the six-second finish:

No. 404: DUANE LUDWIG’S 6-SECOND KO

Not much can be said. Duane Ludwig came out, threw a punch. Knocked out Jonathan Goulet in 6 seconds. It stood as the fastest KO in UFC history until Jorge Masvidal broke the record at UFC 239 around 13 years later.

Full fight here: https://www.ufc.tv/video/duane-ludwig-vs-jonathan-goulet-ufc-fight-night

The first two installments of the list are currently live at UFC.com.

Sixers coach Brett Brown on Tobias Harris: ‘We need him to score’

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown says the Sixers need Tobias Harris to score the basketball.

The Philadelphia 76ers brought back Tobias Harris for a reason and that was to provide some scoring and shooting from the wing position. He hasn’t lived up to that expectation in the previous two games.

After an eight point effort in Tuesday’s 98-97 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Harris followed that up with another night where he struggled scoring another eight points and he shot 4-for-13 in a 112-97 loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. He is shooting a combined 0-for-14 from deep in the two contests.

Heading into the season, coach Brett Brown stated that the Sixers need Harris’ shooting. On Wednesday, Brown reiterated that comment:

I think it’s just human nature. He wants to please. He wants to shoot the ball. He wants to score. We need him to score. We needed Al (Horford) and we needed Tobias to score. We had a drought in the last period and we had a long night in that regard offensively. It consistently reminds me of two things. One, it always in any level of team that you have, it takes longer for offense to catch defense. And two, during that spell you better guard. You better guard. It’s the only insolation that you have if you’re going to miss shots at the rate that we’ve been missing shots. And, so be it.

The season is long. The team is only 11 games into a season where they have championship expectations so it is still very early to make any assumptions about the deal the Sixers gave to Harris.

Brown added:

I cut this thing up into thirds in my head and in my heart. I think it’s going to take until past Christmas to find the rhythm beat to what we’re doing. I look forward to a having a consistent rotation with Joel (Embiid) in the mix, in the meantime I give Orlando credit. I thought they did a great job defensively and we did not respond after a back-to-back.

The Sixers have had a rough time trying to figure out the rotation and it’s been tough to really settle down on a rotation with Embiid being in-and-out of the lineup and the recent injury to Ben Simmons. Once the team settles down, that can give an opportunity to Harris to really find his groove again. [lawrence-related id=19232,19222,19150]

Dwayne Haskins understands challenge Jamal Adams, Jets present

The Redskins QB knows what’s ahead for him this week.

[jwplayer 1vROLFUW-ThvAeFxT]

Washington Redskins starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins has a big challenge in front of him coming out of the bye.

The Gregg Williams-led New York Jets defense is a problem for any quarterback.

Part of this stems from the challenge that is elite Jets safety Jamal Adams, as noted by Zach Selby of the team’s official website: “Haskins said the Jets are a very active defense and safety Jamal Adams makes a lot of plays.”

Not only did Adams and the Jets defense just help the Jets take down the Giants, Adams himself now has 52 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles and six passes defensed with an interception.

Altogether, the Jets are a massive hurdle:

Haskins’ handling of easing into the starting role for what is presumably the rest of the season has been nothing short of encouraging.

But the Jets test happens on the field, not on the media sheets. The next step is to see if the worthwhile work and prep translate to better understanding what defenses are throwing at Haskins.

Balanced attack vs. Wizards leads to Celtics’ ninth straight win

The Boston Celtics are now 9-1 after defeating the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.

[jwplayer 3HtLuIdB-z6KDnl0B]

The Boston Celtics shared the ball, took advantage of turnovers, were efficient and looked like the team to beat in the East on their way to their 10th consecutive victory, defeating the Washington Wizards 140-133 and overcoming a 44-point effort from star guard Bradley Beal.

Jayson Tatum took over in the first quarter, Carsen Edwards played well in the second quarter, Jaylen Brown dominated in the second half and Kemba Walker made his impact felt offensively throughout the game as the quarter combined to score 88 points, with each of Tatum, Brown and Walker breaking the 20-point  mark.

Staying true to the players they’ve been this season, Tatum focused on scoring outside the lane while Brown attacked the rim and Walker let loose from outside. In fact, Walker knocked down 6-12 threes on Wednesday after entering the game shooting a career-high 43.7% from three, his efficiency from outside only matched by Edwards (4-5 from three) and Marcus Smart (4-8 from three) on the Celtics’ side.

Edwards’ career-high 18 points was nice to see, as he went scoreless last game and entered the contest averaging just 4.0 points per game. For a player who torched opponents to the tune of 24.3 points per game at Purdue in his third and final season before averaging 15.3 points per game in the preseason, his performance through the season has been underwhelming.

However, Edwards played light a bolt of lightning against Washington, racing down the court and making play after play.

The Celtics were unable to bottle up Beal, rookie forward Rui Hachimura (21 points on 9-12 shooting) or even Isaiah Thomas (18 points on 7-14), the latter of which who hit a three before the half to cut Boston’s lead down to two.

A game that plenty of runs, the game wasn’t out of reach for the Wizards until the final seconds, with Walker hitting a clutch three to put the Celtics up 140-133.

Ohio State (9-0) vs. Rutgers (2-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Rutgers Will Win

Ohio State doesn’t have Chase Young for another week. Other than that …

Okay, so this is a wee bit of an uphill battle for the Scarlet Knights, but watch out for the Buckeyes looking to get in, get this over with, and move on to the Penn State game next week as healthy as possible.

Rutgers is getting back RB Isaih Pacheco from an ankle problem that kept him out of the Illinois game. He’s a real, live weapon for a rested team that’s had two weeks off to gear up a bit.

QB Johnny Langan might not be Joe Burrow throwing the ball, but he can move, and the offense as a whole has had a few moments when it was at least able to move the ball a wee bit.

And then there’s the anger factor. Ohio State was looking to make a point last week against Maryland – there won’t be any onside kicks against the Scarlet Knights. The pity factor might be enough to call the dogs off early.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State can call its shot.

Does it want to score 50? 75? Does it really want to push for 100?

It’s playing at the highest of levels on both sides of the ball. The offense might get all the attention and love – QB Justin Fields and RB JK Dobbins are going off for an attack that leads the nation in scoring – but the defense has been the real star.

With or without Young, the D keeps on dominating.

The Buckeyes are No. 1 in the nation in total defense, sacks, and second in the country in third down stops. There’s NFL talent all across the board – it’s more than just Young.

Rutgers might have just enough parts to eek out a late score, but it’s going to take something amazing to get to double-digits.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect the Buckeyes to be all that ticked off about being No. 2 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings – and yet they’ll look and play like they are.

Rutgers will score. It just won’t do it twice.

‘The Challenge: War of the Worlds 2’ power rankings after ep. 12

A devious plan backfired badly.

When we last left MTV’s reality competition show The Challenge, rookie Turbo ended up winning $1 million after a brutal final.

This season? It’s the sequel: War of the Worlds 2, which pits a British team against a squad from the United States, although there are some twists that involve some “free agents” joining both sides.

As always, we task our resident Challenge expert Charles Curtis to power rank each of the competitors after each week. Here’s his take after the 12th episode.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

This week: The British team attempts to force one of their own players out by throwing a challenge … and the whole thing backfires spectacularly.

1. PAULIE

2. CARA MARIA

They thought they would see Tori — the turncoat who instantly became one of the British side’s stronger players — go … but nope! Also, Cara Maria scoffing at the Tori and Jordan engagement, thinking it was a set-up? That was … something. Whatever, she and her boyfriend are fully in control, nothing to worry about here.

3. TORI

WHOA. A Hall Brawl elimination at the Proving Grounds was somewhat stacked against her with the larger, more muscular Jenny as her opponent. But then she trucked Jenny and won easily. Super impressive.

4. JORDAN

I’m not sure he and Tori will be able to get this depleted British team through the final with some of the players remaining. We’ll see.

5. JOSS

One of the leaders on the British side and one of their best athletes, too. That’s all I’ve got for him this week.

6. KAM

An up and down week for her as she and Nany butted heads over Leroy, but I have to give her credit for going to Leroy and burying the hatchet. She knows he’s got her back, and he’s going to do his best to protect his longtime friend Nany from any future eliminations.

7. CT

It was on him to throw a challenge and he handled it like the vet he is — saying, “It is what it is.” Like he said, he’s chosen one side over another late in the game, and it’s probably what will propel him to a final.

8. ROGAN

Yeah, he probably deserves to be higher, but man, did he mess this week up or what? First, he tried to pull off a deceptive move to deliberately lose a challenge in order to get his girlfriend Dee thrown into elimination WITHOUT him or his alliance having to do it themselves. Then when she finds out about the plan, he has a change of heart and his team loses one of its best players. C’mon man.

9. ASHLEY

Kudos to her for walking out to a crying Dee and for giving her words of encouragement.

10. LEROY

I think this episode cements he’s not going anywhere. We’re also reminded he’s never won a title in his 11 (!) seasons. Get this man a victory already!

11. DEE

I hope she gets all the way to the final and outruns Rogan in whatever marathon run they’re asked to do.

12. NANY

I worry she’s got a target because of members of her own team, but hopefully Leroy can make sure she sticks.

13. ZACH

What else can we say except he’s still here and still valuable?

14. NINJA NATALIE

Not much to mention, but she was there for her friend Dee in that crazy moment. That was lovely.

15. JOSH

Seems safe … until there’s another men’s elimination.

16. KAYLEIGH

Amazing how she’s survived this wild and crazy game this season, right?
