Notre Dame Basketball Moves to 3-1 After Holding Off Marshall (Highlights)

On a strange night for the Irish, they’re due credit for closing the stressful half with a great finish, taking a 40-29 lead to the break.

A 17 point lead early on wasn’t enough to keep things from getting a bit interesting Friday night at Purcell Pavilion as Notre Dame outlasted Marshall in a 74-64 win that felt a bit closer than that.

The Irish shot out of a cannon to a 25-8 lead early on Friday night before stumbling into the later part of the half, watching their lead disintegrate to just three when Marshall got things to 31-27 with three minutes before halftime.

On a strange night for the Irish, they’re due credit for closing the stressful half with a great finish, taking a 40-29 lead to the break.

After another quick start to the second half, Marshall came thundering back (sorry, had to) with a 10-0 run that made things just 49-46 in favor of the Irish before a John Mooney took over like John Mooney tends to do as old-reliable was again the star as putting up 28 points and pulling down 16 boards. Another day, another double-double for the Pre-Season All-ACC team member.

Dane Goodwin had a fantastic night as well as his nine second half points (11 total) and seven rebounds on the night secured the win.

Dry spells from the field were much to blame for why things got interesting multiple times Friday night as Notre Dame shot just 24/76 on their home court. They also knocked down just seven of 28 three-point attempts.

Notre Dame plays their fourth straight game at home Friday as Presbyterian will be in South Bend. The 3-1 Fighting Irish are yet to trail at home this season.

You can watch highlights of Friday night’s victory right here.

Watch: Ohio State basketball head coach Chris Holtmann talks Villanova and previews Stetson

Ohio State head basketball coach Chris Holtmann met with the media in Columbus Friday to discuss Villanova and to look ahead to Stetson.

Ohio State looked awfully impressive against the tenth ranked Villanova Wildcats Wednesday night, winning by a wide margin 76-51. There’s no doubt it was a head-turning victory. However, a season is not made by one impressive victory, and that’s no doubt that’s the message Holtmann is giving his team.

The head man in charge met with the local media Friday night to reflect upon the game against Villanova and to look ahead to the next opponent, Stetson.

We’ve got the entire press conference for you in case you didn’t catch it courtesy of the Ohio State University Men’s Basketball Facebook page. Holtmann discussed how laser focused his team was against Villanova, tried to temper expectations because of youth, looked ahead to Stetson and more.

Click on the below, watch — and get a listen. As a bonus, you can also catch questions posed to Danny Hummer and freshman E.J. Liddell at the beginning. Holtmann appears midway through the video.

Former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson challenged Georgia Bulldog NFL rookie Mecole Hardman Jr. to a race via Twitter. Johnson has been retired from the NFL for several seasons, but wants to race arguably the fastest player on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mecole Hardman Jr. makes NFL players look slow this season. He has been clocked at over 21 miles per hour this season, the sixth fastest speed of any ball-carrier all year:

Chad Johnson is a fast guy, but it’s hard to pick against Mecole Hardman. About the only humans faster than Hardman are track athletes.

Johnson, formerly known as Ochocinco, challenged Hardman via Twitter earlier this week:

A Chad Johnson versus Mecole Hardman Jr. race would be interesting, but is unlikely to happen anytime during the NFL season. I think all Georgia Bulldog fans know who would prevail. Hardman Jr. ran a 4.3 forty at the 2019 NFL Combine before joining the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson on the other hand ran only a 4.5 back in 2001. It’s hard to imagine that Chad Johnson has gotten that much faster since then.

Sixers’ Jonah Bolden, Marial Shayok impress in Blue Coats win

Young Philadelphia 76ers players Jonah Bolden and Marial Shayok have some impressive games in a win.

As the Philadelphia 76ers were busy taking on the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday, their G League affiliate was busy as well. The Delaware Blue Coats were on the road taking on the Long Island Nets and they received some good play from a couple of Sixers on assignment.

Jonah Bolde, who was assigned to the Blue Coats on Wednesday, led the way with 34 points and nine rebounds and rookie Marial Shayok continued his strong play by scoring 29 points and 13 rebounds in a 152-137 win as Delaware improved to 2-1 on the season. Zhaire Smith did not play in this one due to knee soreness.

Bolden drilled five of his nine attempts from distance and he was 12-for-18 from the floor overall and Shayok continues to show off a nice offensive game that can help the Sixers in the future.

This was the first night of a back-to-back for Delaware as they return home on Saturday to face the Canton Charge. It will be interesting to see how Shayok handles a back-to-back type of game here in his rookie season. [lawrence-related id=19324,19315,19309]

NEF co-owner explains Josh Grispi signing: ‘(He) was convicted and did his time in prison’

New England Fights co-owner explains the decision to sign former UFC fighter Josh Grispi.

[autotag]Josh Gripsi[/autotag], former UFC and WEC fighter, is back.

On Feb. 8, Grispi (14-5 MMA) will return to action for the first time since his 2014 arrest for domestic violence when he takes on former WSOF fighter Bruce Boyington at “NEF 42: Symphony of Destruction” in Portland, Maine.

In August 2014, Grispi was arrested after what the Taunton Daily Gazette reported as a “vicious beating” of his wife, Kaitlyn Grispi. Middleboro (Mass.) police officer Richard Harvey called the attacks “the worst case of domestic abuse I’ve ever seen.”

In June 2017, a grand jury found Grispi guilty on seven charges, and he was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in the House of Corrections and five years probation.

MMA Junkie reached out to the promotion Grispi will be competing for, New England Fights, who provided comment on the signing and what they believe he brings to their organization.

According to NEF co-owner and Massachusetts attorney Nick DiSalvo, the promotion was approached by Grispi’s coach, who informed them the 31-year-old fighter would be making an MMA comeback.

DiSalvo recognized the national issue of domestic abuse and did not excuse Grispi’s past behavior. In DiSalvo’s eyes, Grispi served his time and is deemed no longer dangerous by the judicial system.

“Domestic abuse is an epidemic in our country,” DiSalvo wrote in a statement to MMA Junkie. “There is no excuse for it. It is a horrific crime. Josh was convicted and did his time in prison. There is nothing that would make us believe he has not been rehabilitated and ready to become a productive member of society. If Massachusetts courts determined he was still a threat to anyone, he would not be walking the streets right now.”

“There is never an excuse for subjecting a loved one to physical or emotional abuse. Josh was convicted and did his time in prison. He is out now and deserves the opportunity to make a living to support his children.”

DiSalvo said his dealings with Grispi have been nothing but pleasant thus far. The lightweight fighter “was nothing but respectful and acted like a gentleman to everyone he came in contact with,” DiSalvo wrote.

As far as his in-cage talents are concerned, Grispi is still a top competitor wrote DiSalvo. “He is a tremendous talent who has fought some of the toughest opponents in the sport. He has more to offer our sport before he is done.”

Steelers-Browns fight fallout and suspensions impact three Bengals games

The Steelers-Browns fight headlined by Myles Garrett has a big impact on the Bengals.

Chaos elsewhere in the AFC North might end up helping the downtrodden Cincinnati Bengals.

For those who (somehow) missed it Thursday night, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett hit Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph over the head with his own helmet, prompting an all-out brawl.

That’s keeping it short and sweet, of course. Point is, the NFL dished out punishments the next day, suspending Garrett indefinitely. Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi got a one-game ban and Pittsburgh center Maurkice Pouncey got hit with three games. All bans are subject to appeal as always.

From a Bengals perspective, this means they likely won’t have to deal with Pouncey during their Week 12 game against Pittsburgh. That should make life easier on the defensive line — no word on if Rudolph will be healthy enough to go. The Steelers also lost running back James Conner, receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Diontae Johnson and others to injuries.

As for the Browns, they’ll have to go without Garrett for at least the rest of the season. Meaning, the Bengals won’t have to worry about one of the game’s most ferocious pass-rushers in Cleveland in Week 14 or when the Browns come to town in Week 17.

If nothing else, it’s nice the Bengals aren’t involved in the drama this time out and the happenings there give the team a chance to pick up some wins.

Mike Evans looking for bounce-back performance against Saints in Week 11

Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans has a shot at making history in Week 11, but will need to exorcise some demons from Week 5’s loss to Saints.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans has 924 receiving yards through the first 10 weeks, meaning he’s just 76 away from another 1,000-yard season.

Hitting that mark would make Evans one of only two wide receivers in NFL history — the other being Hall of Famer Randy Moss — to have six-straight 1,000-yard seasons to start their careers.

It seems like almost a given that Evans will get 76 yards on Sunday, especially when you consider the fact that he’s averaged 139.0 yards per game over the team’s last four games.

But, you may want to pump the brakes on the celebratory confetti for now, especially when you consider that Week 11’s opponent is the New Orleans Saints.

When these two teams last met back in Week 5, not only did New Orleans hand the Bucs the first of four-straight losses, but Evans was held without a reception for just the second time in his career.

The only other time it happened?

Week 2 of the 2015 season against — you guessed it — the Saints.

The good news for Evans is that both those performances came in New Orleans. Sunday’s game will be played in the friendly confines of Raymond James Stadium.

Evans has been a tear in the four games since laying that goose egg on the stat sheet. Sunday’s game will be his chance at both redemption and history.

Ohio State wrestling downs No. 15 Pitt on the road

The Ohio State wrestling team went on the road and took care of business against No. 15 Pitt Friday night, winning 23-12.

The No. 3 ranked Ohio State wrestling team traveled to No. 15 Pitt Friday night and came away with a 23-12 team victory to improve to 2-0 on the season in dual meets.

The Buckeyes won six of the ten bouts, with three of them scoring bonus points. No. 1 ranked Kolin Moore (197 lbs.), No. 1 ranked Luke Pletcher (141 lbs.) got major decisions, and No. 6 Sammy Sasso (149 lbs.) pinned his opponent.

Heavyweight Chase Singletary also impressed in his season debut, defeating the higher ranked No. 9 Demetrius Thomas of Pitt 8-3. Malik Heinselman at 125 lbs. and Kaleb Romero at 174 lbs. also scored decisions to give Ohio State the win.

The outcome was never really in doubt, with Ohio State winning five of the first six matches, but the Panthers did battle back to take four of the matches to keep things respectable and showed plenty of grit.

In the end it was a nice victory for the Buckeyes and they next take on No. 11 Virginia Tech (2-0) on Sunday back at home in the Covelli Center.
