What We Learned After Week 14 Of Mountain West Football

One last go around.

Air Force – Ten wins is a great turnaround from back-to-back five wins for the Falcons team. Quarterback Donald Hammond III is now a passing quarterback? Well, not really but he is one of the better passers in Falcon’s history as he ended the season with 1,286 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Boise State – Rename the Broncos quarterback factory. For the third-straight game, Jaylon Henderson led Boise State to a victory. It seemingly does not matter all that much about who is under center. We will see in the title game who gets the start.

Colorado State – The Rams continue to come up short in close games. They had a shot against most of their games this year with five games decided by 10 or fewer points but could not get over the hump.

Fresno State – The Bulldogs took a big step back compared to last year and it started with losses on defense and also quarterback play taking a huge step back. Quarterback Jorge Reyna wasn’t great either with so many late-game miscues. Overall, there were plenty of issues with this team but one of the few bright side of the season was running back Ronnie Rivers.

Hawaii – After 13 games there is still no clear answer as to who the starting quarterback is between Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro, however the swapping back and forth has pretty much worked for the year. It is yet to be seen if it will work in the Mountain West title game.

Nevada – This season has been extremely odd as it saw the Wolf Pack not only used multiple quarterbacks this year en route to becoming bowl eligible. The oddest thing about how the Nevada season is having four of its five losses in the amount of 71, 51, 28, and 26 points.

New Mexico – The Bob Davie era is over is the most significant thing to happen this weekend for the Lobos. Hanging around with Utah State was a good sign despite knowing its head coach was out the door. Time to move on and find its new coach for the Lobos.

San Diego State – The Aztecs went with quarterback Carson Baker to replace the injured Ryan Agnew and he did a solid job. There were no turnovers, a touchdown pass, and an efficient 19 of 24 for 172 yards.

The defense shut down a BYU offense that had been clicking over the past month and the Aztecs shutdown the Cougar attack that was averaging 39.8 points during its five-game winning streak leading into this game.

San Jose State – DeJon Packer had a huge game in helping the Spartans defeat Fresno State for the Valley Trophy, 17-16. Packer had 93 yards rushing and added four receptions for 35 yards with a touchdown. This was his third-straight game with over 100 yards from scrimmage.

UNLV – Tony Sanchez had his final game and the Rebels came out a winner over rival Nevada and keeping the Fremont Cannon red. Wide receiver Steve Jenkins who scored twice, including the game-winning score, on five catches for 140 yards. It was the first time in a month he has had a catch and his best game of the year by far.

Utah State – The running game came back alive — yes,  it was against New Mexico — as Gerold Bright had 113 yards and a score. This was his first 100-yard game since Oct. 19. That ground game is what has been missing over the past month and hindered the Aggies from getting a few more wins.

Wyoming – The surprise in this game is that Tyler Vander Waal got the start at quarterback. He was not the same as he had an interception and his typically solid rushing attack was non-existent.

Final week of the regular season does not change much.

Seven teams will go bowling.

The Mountain West will have all seven teams going to the postseason, no questions. There are going to be more bowl-eligible teams than bowl teams but with each Mountain West team having at least seven wins means that the teams will be safe to assume a postseason berth is on the way.

The big question is if the Mountain West can get into the Cotton Bowl. Boise State is in prime position to if they beat Hawaii in the championship game next weekend.

However, the Broncos will need some help. Memphis is in the front runner seat and if they defeat Cincinnati — the second time in as many weeks — the Tigers are going to the Cotton Bowl but if it is the Bearcats then the Broncos should go to that game. We say should because it depends on where the College Football Playoff committee ranks both Memphis and Cincinnati in the next set of rankings. It is somewhat safe to assume that a one-loss Boise State team should get in over a two-loss Bearcats team.

If Boise State goes to the Cotton Bowl it would shake up who goes where and could provide for a few better matchups with every team moving up a spot in the bowl pecking order.

A few notes about the bowl lineups. Starting with the Hawaii Bowl. The game has a vaguely worded tie-in which is a combination between BYU, Hawaii or an AAC team. The Warriors have a 13-game schedule and must have seven wins to secure a bowl berth. Technically, BYU takes the Mountain West spot but a Cougars vs. Warriors matchup would be a classic WAC rivalry renewal.

There is a new bowl this year and it’s a Power Five opponent from the Big Ten in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Overall, the league has six guaranteed bowl berths and is a backup for the Cheez-It Bowl if the Pac-12 or Big 12 does not have enough teams eligible. As always, there can be trades for the best matchups.

Finally, if the Mountain West is the highest-rated team in the College Football Playoff then a New Year’s Six Bowl game is an option at either the Cotton or Orange Bowl.

The Wyoming Cowboys and Air Force Falcons will conclude the regular season on a bracing Saturday afternoon at the Academy, so those who are interested in tuning in will need to head to Facebook in order to do so.

It is the first of two Mountain West football games that Stadium will host over Thanksgiving weekend, with Utah State and New Mexico squaring off later on Saturday, so be sure to tune in and see the stout Cowboys defense battle a dangerous Falcons offense.

FEI Projection: Air Force by 15.5

Wyoming will enter Colorado Springs as a considerable underdog according to many prognostications. The Vegas line currently has the Pokes at +10.5, SP+ predicts a 34-20 win for the Falcons, and FEI gives Wyoming only a 22% chance to win. History says otherwise, Craig Bohl is 4-1 vs Air Force while Troy Calhoun is 1-5 against Wyoming since the “Howdy Doody” game of 2012. The Cowboys have won 3 consecutive against the Falcons.

Air Force has been specular to watch on offense behind QB Donald Hammond III and RB’s Kaden Remsburg, Taven Birdow, and Timothy Jackson.

Three Keys to a Wyoming Win

Limit Big Plays in the Passing Game

Which 2 receivers have the highest yard per catch average in the conference? If you guessed Air Force’s Ben Waters (32.1) and Geraud Sanders (25.5), you would be correct. The duo has combined for the second-most receiving touchdowns (13) by conference teammates behind only Ward and Byrd from Hawaii (19). The Falcons are still rushing for over 300 yards per game but their ability to throw has taken their offense to the next level.

Wyoming’s Young Defensive Line Against Air Force’s Option

The Cowboys defensive line is largely responsible for the stifling run defense that has allowed 2.7 yards per carry and 94 rushing yards per game but they have yet to face an offense like Air Force. While the Falcons will probably rush for well over that amount, the closer Wyoming is to keeping Air Force closer to 2.7 yards per carry as opposed to the Falcons average of 5.2 yards per carry will likely determine the outcome.

Stopping the triple-option offense requires a complete team effort and players like Logan Wilson, Cassh Maluia, and Alijah Haliburton know what’s coming on Saturday. The young defensive line will need to catch up to speed quickly if the Pokes are going to have a shot at this one.

Control the Clock

The Cowboys and Falcons have a lot in common, both teams are highly effective at running the ball and stopping the run. The huge difference has been Air Force’s ability to make chunk plays. The Cowboys methodical offense with the Falcons ability to control the clock could be too much to overcome if Wyoming is down by more than a possession. Third down conversion rate and time of possession will extremely important for the Pokes if they are going to spring the upset.

Week 14 is here, and where does the time go? Air Force and Wyoming meet on Saturday to close out their regular season. If you like physical throwback football this should be the game for you. That is, if Donald Hammond doesn’t go off completing 90% of his passes for over 300 yards again.

Hammond and the rest of the Falcon offense will find the Cowboys defense to be a much stiffer test than what they faced last week. In fact, it wouldn’t be too far a stretch to say that Air Force will go from facing the conferences worst defense, to its most formidable.

The Falcons don’t pack such a bad defense themselves, with much improved performance this year surrendering 21 points per game.

In fact, I don’t think the defense has really been as appreciated because of the offenses flash. But in many games this season, it’s actually been the defense that has set the tone until the offense got going. Frankly, it was the defense who was most responsible for their win against Army.

As stout as that performance has been, the Pokes are giving up just over 17 per game. So even with the improved defense of Air Force, this is truly a strength on strength matchup of the Falcons offense, averaging 35 points per game against, up against the very formidable Wyoming D.

Three Keys to an Air Force Victory

1. Balance on Offense

Real estate won’t come easy against Wyoming, so it will be imperative for the Falcons to keep them guessing. Regardless of the opponent, the ground game is Air Force’s bread and butter. And for them to find success on the ground, a threat through the air should also be present.

As previously stated, the Wyoming pass defense will pose a completely different challenge than the Lobos did. So getting the Pokes defense out of position and guessing will be paramount to success. Not an easy thing to do against the Logan Wilson led, Cowboys crew. But predictability is not an option this week.

2. Don’t Let Halliburton Drill

A key cog in the Falcons offensive wheel is to stay ahead of the chains and on schedule. This means avoiding tackles for loss and especially those third and long scenarios. For Air Force to mitigate those less favorable down-and-distance scenarios, they must account for Alijah Halliburton.

Not only is the Wyoming safety third in the conference with over 100 tackles, but he is seventh in tackles for loss, averaging nearly one per game. Halliburton isn’t the only player that the Falcons need to worry about on their side of the line of scrimmage, as Wyoming is second in the conference with sacks.

3. No Turnovers

In spite of what has been a very successful season thus far for the Falcons, turnovers have been problematic. Fumbles in particular, these two teams are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Wyoming has only lost three fumbles all season, while Air Force has surrendered the ball via fumble 11 times. This should be a point of focus considering Wyoming’s offense is extremely run heavy.

It would serve the Falcon offense well to be particularly careful with the ball in the air also, as Wyoming’s All-Everything linebacker, Logan Wilson is near the top of the conference with four interceptions.

Prediction

I expect an excellent game between two of the conferences top teams on Saturday. Air Force may be favored by most publications, and come in with more momentum, but I’ve seen a very good 10-win Air Force team lose to a Colby Kirkegaard led Pokes team that won just three FBS games that season.

Whether it’s freshman Levi Williams or Tyler Vander Waal under center, the Pokes will show up ready. Currently Vander Waal sits atop the depth chart after exiting last weeks game.

Even if Wyoming has not had spectacular production from their pass game, Tyler Vander Waal stepped in for an injured Shawn Chambers last year and led the Pokes to a win against Air Force. This is just that kind of series, you don’t necessarily get the expected result.

Air Force should be dialed in for this game, after all, they have lost the last three in the series. So I don’t believe they will be surprised by what Wyoming throws at them. Then again, most teams aren’t, yet they have stacked up wins. Not every team has the multitude of weapons that the Falcon offense is blessed with this year though.

Points could be at a premium for both teams; As good as the Wyoming defense is, I think Air Force has a much better offense comparably. That combined with a defense that seems to keep getting better, should give the Cadets a slight edge.

There is not really much on the line this week as there are no more bowl bids that can be earned and the championship game has been set with Hawaii and Boise State.

Speaking of Boise State, they need to win to keep pace in the Group of Five mix and the Cotton Bowl and that is the biggest storyline of the week. We also discuss the coaching changes at both New Mexico and UNLV and what is next for those openings at each school.

Air Force Falcons

Jackson State Tigers:

The Tigers of Jackson State are 1-5 so far, but that lone win comes against New Orleans-Southern and their losses to division one opponents haven’t been close. They do have SWAC preseason defensive player of the year Jayveous Mckinnis back and averaging 11.7 PPG, 8.3 RPG and 1.8 BPG. He and leading scorer junior guard Tristan Jarrett (16.7 PPG) need some help from from the rest of their team if they hope to get their first win against a division one opponent some time this week.

Boise State

Fri, Nov. 29th

UNC-Wilmington Seahawks:

The Seahawks are heading to Boise on Friday and they come in with a 4-3 record. North Carolina-Wilmington has played some North Carolina power house programs in UNC and Davidson and two of their wins come against non-division programs, but they will likely be riding a two game winning streak come friday and look out for sophomore guard Jaylen Sims (15.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 1.0 APG) who needs to be impactful if they want to leave Boise with a win.

New Mexico State Aggies:

Chris Jan’s squad played just one game this past week, and that was a one point loss at home to in-state rival New Mexico. The Aggies have been dominant in the WAC every year and should figure things out by conference play when they bring back senior guards A.J. Harris and Clayton Henry who have both watched from the bench this season with hand and wrist injuries. The Aggies are a very well balanced team but are led by senior wing Trevelin Queen who is averaging 18.0 PPG, 6.2 RPG and 3.0 APG. New Mexico State is 2-3 through five games, but don’t underestimate this team who has consistently punched tickets to the NCAA tournament this past decade.

Possible Opponents: Loyola Chicago Ramblers, South Florida Bulls, Washington State Cougars, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Old Dominion Monarchs, George Mason Patriots

Utah Valley Wolverines:

The Wolverines are 4-3 on the season and look to be a solid contender in the WAC against the aforementioned Aggies of New Mexico State. A team led by senior guard T.J. Washington who is averaging 17.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 2.8 APG has two solid wins agains UAB and North Dakota State. But a near upset against the Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena this past week is probably the highlight of the season for Wolverine fans this so far. Also watch out for former Oklahoma State guard Brandon Averette who compliments Washington in the backcourt and averages 14.6 PPG, 2.1 RPG and 1.9 APG while doing it.

Cal-St. Northridge Matadors:

In Mark Gottfried’s second season in Northridge the Matadors are currently 0-6 in a tough start to the season. The team is without star forward Lamine Diane who is sitting out after being ruled academically ineligible, and junior guard Terrell Gomez is leading the team in scoring (20.8 PPG) but hasn’t received much help from his team mates. The Matadors aren’t a very tall team either. That statement seams misleading when there are multiple seven footers on the roster but they haven’t logged any minutes so far this season.

Bowling Green Falcons:

The Falcons are 5-1 on the year and are coming off of an impressive 91-84 OT win against Cincinnati on Sunday night. Bowling green’s lone loss comes against a top-25 ranked LSU squad, but that game was closer than the 9 point deficit they lost by. The Falcons are good, and junior guard Justin Turner is leading them in points, assists and scoring. He is averaging over twenty points a game and has four teammates averaging over eight points a game behind him. The Wolf Pack need to bring their A game on Monday night to leave with a trophy and some momentum returning to Reno.

Titles clinched and dreams crashed.

Air Force – Donald Hammond III lived up to the Falcon moniker by throwing for 327 yards on just 9 of 10 passes and four touchdowns. This performance might have just gave the Falcons signal-caller the player of the year award.

Boise State – Apparently, it doesn’t matter who plays quarterback for Boise State as Jaylen Hendersen helped lead the Broncos to a thrasing of a win over Utah State which clinched the Mountain Division title.

Colorado State – We learned that when the Rams play a really good defense like it did vs. Wyoming that it offense struggles. This is nothing new when teams play the Cowboys but Colorado State’s offense has been extremely good of late and it just happened to run into a tough defense.

Fresno State – Oh boy. The offense line was a complete mess in this game and the coaching staff made some odd coaching decisions like not giving the ball to running back Ronnie Rivers and also passing three consecutive times with 90 seconds left and in the shadow of their goal posts.

Hawaii – Warriors win a defensive game and stopped the San Diego State rushing game to clinch the West Divison. The offensive passing game was pretty efficient but the standard Warriors eye-popping numbers were not there. However, the turnovers were held to a minimum of just one and for some reason head coach Nick Rolovich swapped between Cole McDonald and Chevan Corderio.

Nevada – Welcome to 2019, Toa Taua. The sophomore running back had just his second game of more than 100 yards on the ground. Taua’s season can be classified as a sophomore slump but he does have two games left to build up on the 135 yards he had vs. Fresno State.

New Mexico – Nothing. Literally nothing. The top two running backs are out with injuries and starting quarterback Tevaka Tuioti left the game. It is only a matter of time before Bob Davie is released of his duties.

San Diego State – The running game was completely shutdown vs. Hawaii and this area of the team has been an issue all year and it continued on the islands on Saturday night.

San Jose State – Josh Love is really good. He had 465 yards and three touchdowns but he had four picks. The only problem is that Love can not do it all and the running game did not really help his cause this week.

UNLV – The defense is better thane expected as they forced five turnovers vs. San Jose State. This is the second game they had a good defensive performance as they held Hawaii to just 21 points the week prior, but it was a game they lost.

Utah State – Where to begin? The glamour position of quarterback has not been nice to Jordan Love. He had another bad interception that led to a pick-six in the blowout loss to Boise State. The defense of the Aggies was not good and they were taken apart by third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson.

Wyoming – There is depth at quarterback people did not know. Levi Williams had to enter the game vs. Colorado State and he moved the ball well, specifically with his feet, as Tyler Vander Wall was getting treatment for an injured leg. Also, the Cowboys defense put the clamps down on a pretty good Rams offense.
