Minnesota vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers might not be pretty, and they might not have their top running backs around anymore thanks to injury, but they’ve figured it out.

The stunning loss to a miserable Bowling Green overshadowed the wonderful run of five wins in the last six games. It stepped up defensively against Purdue, it got the passing game working just enough against Nebraska, and then came last week with a brilliant 326-yard rushing day against Maryland.

Northwestern isn’t scoring. It was able to move the offense enough to get 21 on Rutgers, but it couldn’t run a lick in the 56-7 loss to Nebraska or in the 33-7 loss to Michigan.

Dead last in the Big Ten against the run, Northwestern is 0-4 when allowing over 200 yards, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Northwestern Will Win

It’s 4-0 when allowing fewer than 200 rushing yards.

When the Wildcats have problems with the run defense, they get gouged. When they’re holding up and taking control of the game with their own offense, they go all Northwestern. It’s nothing pretty, but it gets the job done.

Minnesota hasn’t been able to come up with the same offensive game twice, especially through the air.

Northwestern has to get to Gopher quarterback Tanner Morgan and make him press – he can’t get comfortable and be accurate. Will he hit 84% of his passes like he did in the win over Nebraska, or will he complete 39% like he did in the loss to Bowling Green?

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

How much do you believe in trends?

Northwestern has been able to adapt and adjust, going L-W-L-W all the way through its slate so far – and it’s coming off the loss to Michigan. However, there’s a reason for that.

Indiana State, Ohio, Rutgers.

Northwestern was able to step up and win three of the winnable games, and Minnesota isn’t making things easy on anyone right now.

Third down conversions aren’t going to be Northwestern’s friend, especially against a Minnesota ground game that will get past 200 yards.

Iowa vs Wisconsin Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

As you’re reading this, Wisconsin probably just turned the ball over.

It’s insane how bad a program that’s been built on being so good at doing everything right has become so consistently awful when it comes to giveaways.

It’s not that past Badger teams were perfect, but when there were turnovers, they usually came in a total meltdown – more often than not against Northwestern.

It’s become a steady stream of bad, giving it up 17 times this year in seven games, 28 times in the last 12 games, and going back to the middle of 2019, the program has turned it over 45 times in 22 games for an average of just over two giveaways per game.

Turnovers can usually be overcome if they’re the cost of doing business – if you have a high-powered offense that scores in bunches, no big deal. But the Wisconsin offense has all but abandoned the idea of a successful downfield throw.

By the way, the Iowa defense is pretty good at the whole takeaway thing with 16 in six games before the loss to Purdue, and Penn State – with 107 yards – is the only team to rush for over 100 yards on this bunch.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Wisconsin Will Win

As you’re reading this, the Iowa offensive line probably just gave up another tackle for loss.

For all of the love and affection given to the Hawkeye line – especially future NFL star C Tyler Linberbaum – it’s not all that great at blocking.

When it came to plays behind the line, the Purdue, Penn State, and Maryland defensive lines wore the Hawkeye front five as a hat.

Iowa’s Big Ten-worst offense was exposed by Purdue – the points dried up fast without any takeaways – and it’s not like things are about to get a whole lot better in Madison.

Wisconsin is No. 1 in the nation against the run – and that’s with a win over Army and another against an Illinois offense that cranked out two 300-yard rushing days in two of its last three games.

The Badgers are No. 2 in total defense behind Georgia, it’s tenth in passing yards allowed, and just assume eight tackles for loss and go from there.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

But the takeaways …

Iowa is rested, is should be a whole lot fresher than it looked and played against Purdue, and it’s about to come up with at least three takeaways against a Badger offense that’ll give them away like fun-size Kit Kats.

It’s not like the Iowa O will produce much of anything – set the total yards over/under at about 240 – but it’ll capitalize on the Badger mistakes just like Penn State, Michigan, and Notre Dame did.

Rutgers vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Rutgers might be having a rough run, but the defense hasn’t been all that awful – at least against the mediocre teams.

The D is great at coming up with third down stops – only Ohio State was able to move the chains with any regularity – and it’s been great at keeping the team in games. The Buckeyes went off and made that a laugher right away, but no one else has been able to blow up.

Illinois isn’t going to do that, either.

The Illini have no passing game whatsoever – they haven’t pushed past 100 yards in any of the last four games – and it’s not going to get rolling this week against the Scarlet Knights, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Illinois Will Win

Illinois is running well.

Forget the Wisconsin debacle – no one can run on the Badger D – but the Illini were able to blast away on Penn State for 357 yards and rocked Charlotte to make it two 300-yard rushing days in the last three.

Rutgers has good tacklers and shouldn’t get gashed, but as long as the Illini can get Chase Brown going early – he hit the 49ers for 257 yards and 223 against the Nittany Lions – all of the other parts should work.

The Rutgers O can’t do anything down the field and it’s going to struggle to get past 300 yards.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

And you thought last week’s nine overtime debacle was painful …

Illinois isn’t going to score more than 20 points. Start with that and work backwards.

Rutgers hasn’t scored more than 17 points against anyone but Delaware and Temple, and that only happened against the latter because of five takeaways.

Illinois can run the ball, Rutgers can sort of throw the ball, Illinois can run the ball better than Rutgers can sort of throw the ball.

Assuming the turnover margin is close to even …

Indiana vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

Oh Maryland …

We saw this at the beginning of 2019, and it happened for a bit in the weird 2020. The team rocked out of the gate, came up with some nice wins, and then it all fell painfully apart.

Now it’s happening again.

The Terps have yet to score more than 20 points against a Power Five team since beating West Virginia 30-24 in the opener. The passing game has fallen flat, the running game hasn’t hit 100 yards in any of its last three games, and the run defense is getting progressively worse.

The biggest problem, though, is the turnover margin. The Terps were +5 over the first two games and are a -12 in the five games since with no takeaways in the last three outings.

Speaking of not scoring …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Maryland Will Win

To be fair, playing Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State over the last three games was hard, Throw in the Iowa game, too, and IU has scored a grand total of 28 points in four Big Ten games.

There’s no real running game for Maryland to worry about. There’s no real offense for Maryland to worry about.

Indiana has failed to get to 400 yards in every game but the 33-31 win over WKU, there’s no downfield passing game to go along with the lack of rushing attack, and like Maryland, there’s a turnover problem – IU has yet to win the turnover margin against an FBS team.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not like Maryland doesn’t have parts.

Taulia Tagovailoa might be past his interception problem after not giving one away against Minnesota, but he’s going to have to be the star for the Terps to pull this off.

The problem is that the Indiana defense isn’t that bad. Oh sure, it got blasted by Ohio State, but overall it held down Michigan State to 241 yards, kept Cincinnati in check, and only allowed 303 yards to Iowa.

Indiana lost to the five teams it was supposed to, beat the two teams it was supposed to, and now, even though it’s on the road, it’s going against a Maryland team it should beat. The defense will take over.

Michigan vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Welcome back, running game. You have a nice rest?

The Wolverines roared through the first three games against three solid teams – yes, Western Michigan, Washington, and Northern Illinois are at least decent – with 335 rushing yards or more against each.

There was a problem against Rutgers, and Derrick Henry would have an issue against the Wisconsin defense – maybe not; he ran for 147 yards and three scores against the Badgers in the 2015 opener – and then the O kicked back in against Nebraska and Northwestern to keep the unbeaten season going.

Yes, the Michigan State run defense has been good so far. Yes, the team has played great, the skill guys have been outstanding, and …

It’s all been done against a big bag of no big whoop.

Miami and WKU might go bowling, but it’ll be close. The Spartans have yet to beat a team with a winning record.

The Michigan O line is among the best in the nation at not allowing pressure into the backfield. That obviously helps the skill guys who aren’t turning the ball over, the defense is second in the nation in fewest points allowed behind Georgia, and now it all gets go against a Spartan team that doesn’t move the chains all that easily, doesn’t control the clock, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan, welcome to a pass rush.

While we’re schedule-shaming here, the Wolverine wins over Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, and shockingly, Washington, are hardly any reason to start building statues.

Beating Wisconsin at Wisconsin was nice, but that O is more than happy to give away three turnovers if you ask nicely.

To be fair, the offensive front held its own against the Badgers, but now it gets a Michigan State defensive line that’s been steady with three or more sacks in every game but the breather against Youngstown State.

On the other side, Michigan has yet to face anyone who can push the passing game – Western Michigan comes the closest – but Washington and Nebraska each pushed up against the 300-yard mark.

Michigan State is a big play team both with the passing attack and with Kenneth Walker on the ground, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The Michigan defense is playing too well.

This is one of those it-comes-down-to-details games that former Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio’s teams were so good at when the program was rolling.

Current head man Mel Tucker is doing a fantastic job, but this team commits way too many penalties, has issues on third downs, doesn’t control the clock, and it’s last in the Big Ten in pass defense and first downs allowed.

Michigan might not be sensational, but it’s steady. It’s great on third downs, doesn’t turn the ball over, and it’s among the best in the nation in time of possession.

The Spartans will get up fast, but Michigan’s steady pounding will take over midway through the third quarter.

Kentucky vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Back to work.

Kentucky had its shot at Georgia two weeks ago, lost tastefully 30-13, and now it’s rested for a not-that-bad finishing kick with this and next week’s game against Tennessee to two most dangerous games left.

It all starts against Mississippi State by keeping its short pass plays from taking over.

The UK secondary doesn’t allow a whole lot of big things – the loss to Georgia aside – but it’ll give up dinks and dunks. That’s what Mississippi State does, but the Wildcats can tackle.

They can run the ball, too – at least when they’re not playing Georgia or Florida – but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Mississippi State has a defense. It’s good.

It has issues with the sharper passing teams, but that’s not really Kentucky.

The Wildcats dink and dunk, but with enough accuracy to keep things going. Just like Mississippi State is a good ball-control team for UK to deal with, it’s the other way around, too.

The Bulldog run defense doesn’t get gouged – it has yet to allow 200 yards on the ground – and outside of the Alabama game, the team has been able to at least keep everything close.

Kentucky isn’t going to run away and hide with this game – it’s not going to put 50 on the board – and Mississippi State does a much, much better job of controlling the clock.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the world will be all about other games and the Just Means More types will be focused on Auburn and Ole Miss while this is going on, but these two might come up with the best SEC game of the day.

Don’t expect crazy. It’ll be a lot of short plays, a lot of third down attempts, and a whole lot of attempts to do anything to try pulling away.

It’s not going to be anything aesthetically pleasing, but the final ten minutes will be worth the watch as each team has a shot to pull this off.

Kentucky will get out with a walk-off field goal.

Ole Miss vs Auburn Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Seriously, Bryan Harsin?

Just as Auburn’s season got a massive boost with a strong win over Arkansas, the head coach is refusing to say whether or not he’s vaccinated.

Let’s just say it’s causing a wee bit of a stir

It’s different than the Nick Rolovoch situation – he was a State of Washington employee. Auburn’s employee vaccine mandate doesn’t kick in until December, but for now, it’s enough to be the focus in week when everything has to be about stopping a team that requires everyone’s full and undivided attention.

On the field, the Ole Miss offense keeps rolling along with consistent balance, good explosion, and the experience of being battle-tested with wild wins over Arkansas and Tennessee before getting by LSU by 14.

The brilliance of the Rebel offense – No. 2 in the nation behind Ohio State – is that it’s doing all this without screwing up. The O has given up just four turnovers – spreading them out over the last five games – and Auburn’s defense doesn’t do a whole lot to take the ball away.

Just start by assuming Ole Miss walks into the stadium with over 200 yards both rushing and passing, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Auburn Will Win

Bo Nix has been strong.

The oft-maligned Auburn quarterback will never be Aaron Rodgers with his accuracy – although he hit 81% of his throws in the win over Arkansas – but he’s not making a ton of big mistakes, he’s moving the offense well, and he hasn’t had to force too much thanks to a solid defense that’s getting the job done.

The Tigers aren’t going to shut down the Ole Miss offensive machine, but it’s going to pressure QB Matt Corral, it’ll generate several plays behind the line, and it should be able win its share of battles.

This isn’t a team that does much in the time of possession battle, but slow things down just a wee bit, control the clock against a team that has the ball for under 28 minutes per game, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball. That’s what Auburn is about to do.

The ground game has the talent in the backfield, and the offensive line hasn’t been bad, but the team hasn’t hit 200 rushing yards since it blasted away on Akron and Alabama State to start the season.

This week it will.

The Ole Miss run defense stepped up in a big way against LSU – but that was a distracted LSU. This is a distracted Auburn, but it won’t get too funky here.

Line up, run the ball, run the ball again, let Nix make a few key completions, and then hold on for dear life.

It’ll be yet another SEC thriller with this Lane Kiffin team, but this time it’ll be on the wrong side of a very fun, very tight battle.

Florida vs Georgia Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

Florida has the offensive versatility to potentially throw something different at the Georgia D.

No one’s running on this Bulldog brick wall, but Auburn – and to a certain extent, Arkansas – are the only teams on the slate so far that can actually throw a bit.

This isn’t the fun-time Kyle Trask Gator offense of last year, but it’s good enough to be the biggest test yet for the Georgia secondary with both Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson expected to see time.

If that works – and if the O can hit its normal 200+ yards through the air – that could open things up just a wee bit for a ground attack that won’t go off, but might be able to control the game and the clock a little bit.

And then there’s the Georgia quarterback issue.

Stetson Bennett has been terrific so far, but that’s partly because he hasn’t had to throw a pass in a stressful situation. He was amazing last year early on, and then Alabama happened – there’s a multi-interception game in there somewhere. That’s, of course, if he plays.

Head coach Kirby Smart is keeping the starting quarterback situation under wraps now that JT Daniels is healthy again. If Daniels really is 100%, he’s it. He’s the national championship-level, NFL starting quarterback who takes the No. 1 team up a few notches, but he also hasn’t played in a month.

The Florida D might have issues, but it can get to the quarterback. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Georgia Will Win

Can Florida avoid the big mistakes?

The Gator defense might have been pounded on by LSU, but it was solid against Alabama and was able to keep Tennessee from doing all the fancy schmancy things it does. However, Georgia should be able to keep this simple.

Bulk yards don’t necessarily matter here. Georgia was able to maintain control against Kentucky with just 166 yards on the ground. That was a don’t-screw-it-up game, and it didn’t – run, rely on the defense, don’t make big mistakes. The Dawgs didn’t turn the ball over.

There were turnovers over the first part of the year, but the offense hasn’t given it up in the last three games. Florida’s defense doesn’t help itself with takeaways with just six on the year and four of them coming in the wins over Florida Atlantic and Vanderbilt.

Yeah, can throw a bit, but it gave away four interceptions against LSU, two the week before against Vanderbilt, and turned it over 13 times on the season with a -7 turnover margin.

Florida has the talent and the athletes to pull this off, but it has to be perfect, it has to win the turnover margin for the first time this season, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Florida won’t win the turnover battle.

As always, this will be among the most intense, hard-hitting battles of the season. However, for Georgia, it’s going to be about playing at an even keel and not getting caught up in the emotion, the huge hits, and the big plays on both sides of the ball that Florida will occasionally come up with.

But the Georgia run defense really is just that good.

The formula will continue to work. Rely on the offense to grind out enough yards to matter, don’t take unnecessary chances, expect the defense to own the game, especially in the second half.

It’s dead last in the nation in averaging just 13.2 points per outing whether it needs them or not.

The team is able to battle from time to time, but it has yet to score more than 20 points in any SEC game and scored six or fewer in three of the four.

Missouri has its issues, but it’s got the versatility to move the ball however it wants. It ran well against North Texas, it threw just fine against Tennessee and Boston College, and any sort of a scoring burst might be too much for this struggling Commodore attack to overcome.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Missouri still isn’t big on that whole defense thing.

The Tigers are dead last in the SEC in total defense, second-to-last in the nation against the run, and there are a whole lot of problems getting off the field – offenses are allowing teams to hit close to 50% of their third down chances.

No, Vanderbilt’s offense isn’t anything special, but it has to try running and keep hammering away no matter what – things will eventually open up.

The Tigers have allowed 275 yards or more on the ground in five of their last six games, with North Texas the only team that didn’t get there and bombed away for over 300 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

This is one game that Vanderbilt has a real shot at winning in SEC play.

It’s at home, Missouri really, really doesn’t do anything on defense, and …

Nah. Mizzou has had two weeks off to rest up from the loss to Texas A&M, the offense should be able to get the passing attack going against the shaky Commodore pass D – it’s the worst in the SEC – and the defense will finally come up with just enough stops to get by.
