Pitt vs Miami Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

Well there we go, Miami, was that so hard?

The Hurricanes had struggled through tough loss after tough loss, but they’re still fighting and still trying to make something out of the season.

It all finally turned the other way with a 31-30 win over NC State with a great day out of QB Tyler Van Dyke and a passing game that picked a perfect time to have one of its best games of the season.

The Pitt defense has been solid overall, but it got hit hard by the Georgia Tech and Western Michigan passing attacks, and in this Van Dyke and company have to go off to keep up the pace.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Pitt Will Win

For as much fun as Pitt is having, and as good as QB Kenny Pickett has been,  this team is about control.

Pickett is playing as well as any quarterback in the country – he threw for over 300 yards with two scores in the win over Clemson, and he has just one pick on the year. More than anything else, he’s moving the chains for an O that leads the ACC in time of possession, keeping the ball for close to 34 minutes per game.

Miami can bring a little bit of pressure, but not as much as Pitt will come up with. The Panther D line should get to Van Dyke, and the Miami offense that holds the ball for an ACC-low 26:17 per game might never seem like it has the ball.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Just when it seems like it’s all going to implode for Miami, it doesn’t.

It could just as easily be coming into this on a four-game winning streak right now rather than be fighting for its bowl eligibility life, but it’s all of those little missed details that are adding up.

Pitt will get the better play from its defensive line, the quarterback, and as a whole as it pushes through with a strong early fourth quarter to maintain its hold on the Current Best Team In The ACC honor.

Kansas vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Can the Kansas offense that was so good and so sharp against Oklahoma – relatively speaking to Kansas – show up in Stillwater?

For all of the team’s problems, the O has had its moments with a big day against Duke, a 410-yard day against Coastal Carolina, and last week’s solid performance in the battle with the Sooners.

It was a terrifically-called day from the coaching staff, letting QB Jason Bean roll out in a rhythm and find his guys in space – easier said than done – as he completed a season-high 74% of his passes for 246 yards and a score, averaging close to 11 yards per throw.

The Jayhawk offense was great, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Kansas lost by 12.

That was about as perfect a game as Kansas could’ve played and it still lost by double-digits. The defense is still last in the nation in third down stops, it’s the third-worst in the nation in pass efficiency D, and now it has to deal with an Oklahoma State team that’s brilliant at maintaining control in game after game.

The Cowboys might not be all that explosive compared to past versions, but the goal is to not screw up, score when there’s a chance, and rely on the tremendous defense to dominate.

Great at getting into the backfield, tremendous on third downs, and allowing just 307 yards per game, the OSU defense should be able to lock down against the KU running attack and apply plenty of pressure on Bean.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Last week was fun, but Kansas is about to deal with a team that’s going to bring the energy and focus from the start.

Oklahoma State’s defense will own the game – be surprised if the Jayhawks get to 75 rushing yards.

TCU vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

The offense works … usually.

The Horned Frogs hit 430 yards against everyone but Texas and West Virginia – both losses – and those two games came on the two worst rushing performances of the season.

It’s this simple. When TCU runs well, it wins. It needs to be able to grind, control the clock, and keep its defense off the field. Kansas State is 4-0 when allowing fewer than 130 yards, 0-3 when giving up more, and TCU has yet to run for fewer than 169 yards.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Kansas State Will Win

The TCU defense. It’s not good.

The Horned Frogs have allowed 200 yards rushing and passing in each of the last three games and over 400 total yards in all six games since the opener over Duquesne.

Kansas State pulled its season up out of the nosedive with a Matt-Wells-firing 25-24 win over Texas Tech thanks to one of the team’s best defensive performances of the season. The offense needs to crank it up here.

TCU can’t stop the run, it’s not generating any pressure into the backfield, and it’s not taking the ball away. Kansas State has to keep this conservative and pound, pound, pound away.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

TCU just can’t seem to overcome its defensive issues.

Neither team is playing all that well overall, but Kansas State at home should be able to get its offense going just enough to be more consistent. Expect an entertaining and close game, with TCU being able to come up with the one stop it needs.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oklahoma vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Texas Tech?

Here’s the crazy thing about the firing of head coach Matt Wells – the team is still in the midst of what could be a bowl season with one more win.

It’s been up-and-down, and the blowout losses to Texas and TCU didn’t help, but this isn’t a bad team for interim head coach Sonny Cumbie to work with.

The offense hasn’t been a strong as it should be – and it’s certainly not consistent enough – but the passing game is still the second-best in the Big 12 despite losing starting QB Tyler Shough to a collarbone injury, and the run defense has been solid, for the most part, allowing fewer than 100 yards in five games.

Oklahoma will go through a lull. It isn’t a team that keeps its foot on the pedal for a full 60 minutes – the opportunities will be there to take over the game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Get Caleb Williams and the running game going right away.

First of all, the Sooners need to crank up the energy and interest to a whole other level after coming out dead-flat against Kansas. That happens with a few quick early scoring drives, and it makes things easier if the O line can blast the Red Raider front off the ball.

Texas Tech was able to stuff the Kansas State running game last week, but TCU and Texas each ripped off well over 300 yards on the ground and won easily. Since Williams has taken over, the OU rushing attack has taken off.

Oklahoma failed to get to 200 rushing yards in the four games against FBS teams before Texas, and it’s averaging 261 per game since the quarterback switch.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This is all about energy and focus.

Will Texas Tech be able to rally around Cumbie and crank up the intensity with a shot to make a massive statement?

OU had one blowout win over TCU and great second halves against Texas and Kansas, but this is one brutally inconsistent team.

The Sooners will win – it’ll go on a scoring run when it needs to – but it’ll do what it does and take about a quarter of the game off to let Texas Tech make this interesting.

Iowa State vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Well there we go. That’s the Iowa State we all thought would be rolling into 2021.

The running game didn’t work against the great Oklahoma State defense, it was a close fight that came down to a questionable late call, but a win is a win is a win, and now the Cyclones still have the Big 12 Championship appearance there for the taking by winning out.

Outside of last week, the offense has been almost perfectly balanced, and the defense has been phenomenal – it’s No. 3 in the nation in total D and first in the Big 12 in scoring defense – going against a one-sided West Virginia offense.

The Mountaineer running game went off on TCU last week, but that’s not the norm. The team is failed to get to 100 yards in all four losses, and it ran for 180 yards or more in the three wins.

No one has rushed for 180 yards on Iowa State so far.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why West Virginia Will Win

It’s a different team at home.

The Mountaineers were able to keep their season alive with a win over TCU in Fort Worth, and there was a 23-20 loss to Morgantown a few weeks ago, but three of the last four games have been on the road. This is just the team’s second home game since the middle of September.

The defense has been a bit consistently solid, even when the offensive side wasn’t great. Baylor went off, and the pass defense will give up yards, but the run defense has yet to allow more than 175 yards and the D as a whole only gave up over 400 once since the opener against Maryland.

The defense is fantastic at getting into the backfield, it’s strong at not breaking all that often after bending, and it should be able to keep this close throughout.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The Iowa State defense will take over in a somewhat surprising slugfest of a game.

West Virginia will take its game up a few notches at home, but it’ll come down to just a few mistakes. Iowa State is the best in the Big 12 at limiting penalties, and it’s among the best in the country in fewest giveaways.

West Virginia doesn’t take the ball away and will lose the turnover battle. That will be enough.

Texas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

It’s desperation time for the rested Longhorns.

They’ve had two weeks off after losing to Oklahoma State, that was coming off the loss to Oklahoma, and now they need to win out to be in the mix for the Big 12 Championship.

The offense was stuffed by the Cowboys, and the running game hasn’t been great, but the firepower is there to make this a shootout. Baylor’s offense has been inconsistent – great over the last two weeks, mediocre against Iowa State and Oklahoma State – having problems on third downs.

Again, Baylor has been hit or miss – it was great on third downs early on and against BYU, and wasn’t against the Cyclones and Cowboys. Texas has been phenomenal on third downs and has to keep the chains moving on this group, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Baylor Will Win

The Baylor offense took it up a few notches.

It started off great against a few bad teams to start the season – again – struggled against the two good defenses – and then threw well in the 25-point win over West Virginia and rolled for 534 yards with one of the most impressively balanced days of the year in the 14-point win over BYU.

It starts with the ground attack. It didn’t do much for a stretch, but the offensive line took over against BYU and Abram Smith made the most of it with a 188-yard, three-score day.

The Texas run defense lost to Arkansas when it couldn’t stop the run, and lost to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State when it was run over. So …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Texas is 4-0 when allowing offenses to run for fewer than 200 yards, and it’s 0-3 when allowing 200 or more. However, outside of Louisiana, Texas hasn’t beaten a team that could run all that well.

At home, Baylor will keep the momentum going from the BYU win in a fun, back-and-forth battle. The Bears will be steady enough to overcome the Texas home runs.

Penn State vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

The defense has done enough to be unbeaten … to a point.

Yeah, Illinois hammered away for 357 rushing yards in last week’s win, but 1) there were just 38 passing yards allowed, and 2) how many times and ways did you want the Nittany Lion D to stop the overtime chances?

The defense gave up just 305 yards in the loss to Iowa, it allowed fewer than 300 yards in three of the four games before that, and it has the secondary, the ability to take the ball away, and the pressure to be a bother against the Buckeye offensive machine.

Ohio State might be putting up yards by the bucketload, but Tulsa, Akron, Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana. Oooooooooooooh, CJ Stroud and company weren’t exactly dealing with the 2000 Baltimore Ravens.

Of course, the O put up over 600 yards against Oregon in desperation comeback mode, but the Ducks were missing a few key parts, Ohio State lost, and Penn State’s defense is better.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Ohio State Will Win

Maybe the stats are a wee bit overblown because of the mediocre competition over the last five games, but if you’re No. 1 in the nation in total offense, you’re doing something right.

Let’s just cut to the chase here. TreVeyon Henderson might be the best running back in college football – he just hasn’t been used enough yet as a workhorse on a big stage. That might change on Saturday night.

WRs Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave are going to be in your NFL fantasy drafts for the next decade or so, and helped by the relatively light schedule and all the talent around him, CJ Stroud has the reps logged in to get up to speed.

And then there’s the Penn State offense.

Starting quarterback Sean Clifford got banged up against Iowa and it showed, with the offense only coming up with 287 yards in the loss. Clifford was back last week against Illinois, and the O only came up with 227 yards in the loss.

After a rocky start, the Ohio State defense has become fantastic against the run. It allowed over 200 yards in the first two games – and over 30 points in each- and it gave up just over 76 rushing yards once in the five games since.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Allow me to reintroduce myself …

If it feels like a long, long time since you’ve seen Ohio State play – and unless you’re a Buckeye fan, there’s been no reason to tune in to the soft schedule since the loss to Oregon – you might not recognize it.

It’s not that it’s a different team since it opened up struggling against Minnesota and Oregon, but it’s playing like it needed a few games to work out the timing and the kinks, and now it’s all good.

Penn State is still a talented team, but it’s a mess on offense and the defense isn’t going to make up for it.

It’s been able to get by so far against a slew of offensively-challenged opponents – with some due respect to Auburn – but now it’s about to deal with a Buckeye team looking to make one giants statement a few days before the first set of College Football Playoff rankings come out.

Purdue vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

It’s partly because QB Adrian Martinez tries to make a whole lot of plays and gets caught in the backfield, but Nebraska is giving up a whole lot of negative plays – allowing over five tackles for loss and close to three sacks per game – and Purdue has the defensive front to take advantage of it.

DE George Karlaftis is on a pressure roll for a defense that’s come up with seven or more tackles for loss in six of the last seven games.

That’s the catalyst for a D that’s second in the Big Ten behind Wisconsin, it’s not giving up a whole lot of big plays through the air, and it should be able to hold its own against a Nebraska offense that doesn’t win when it doesn’t get more than 160 yards.

The Huskers are 3-0 when running for 220 yards or more, and it only ran for 160 or fewer when it came up with 160 or fewer. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Nebraska Will Win

Purdue just got blasted by the Wisconsin running game for 290 yards. Now, the team is 4-0 when allowing fewer than 120 rushing yards, and 0-3 when allowing more.

Nebraska has hit the 120-yard mark on the ground in every game but the loss to Oklahoma.

The Husker defense has been fine, even though it allowed 62 total points in the last two games. Purdue doesn’t/can’t run, and it needs to be steady with the passing game against a Nebraska secondary that gives up yards, but isn’t getting torched often enough to matter.

Purdue hasn’t faced a whole slew of dynamic offensive playmakers. Notre Dame? Wisconsin? Oregon State? Minnesota? It dealt with plenty of steady and solid offensive guys, but it hasn’t had to deal with anyone like Martinez.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska got to take a deep breath.

The lost to Michigan was devastating, and the loss at Minnesota might have been a deathblow to the season. With two weeks off, though, it should be the much fresher team against a Purdue bunch that had the physical loss to the Gophers, the emotional fight at Iowa, and the brutal beating to Wisconsin.

It’s Nebraska – there will be a few big mistakes to make this interesting – but Martinez and the offense will come through with the offensive pop that Purdue won’t.
