Minnesota vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

The wind and awful conditions certainly helped – there wasn’t anything happening through the air – but the Wildcats still gave Ohio State a push in a 21-7 loss.

Again, the weather, but Northwestern outgained the Buckeyes 285-283. That’s a massive reach for something nice, but in the midst of a miserable season that could potentially be 1-11, the effort is still there.

Minnesota has been wildly inconsistent. The running game rocked against Rutgers, and sputtered against Nebraska. The Cats have to make the Gophers throw, keep them to under four yards per carry, and …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Minnesota Will Win

Yeah, that holding Minnesota to under four yards per carry thing. That’s not happening.

The Northwestern defensive front has fallen off the map with games against better ground games over the last month. It was okay at times, but it’s allowing well over five yards per pop in Big Ten play.

Minnesota is fine at keeping things conservative and boring. It wasn’t great against the Huskers,  but there weren’t any turnovers, the defense stuffed the Huskers in key moments, and all turned out to be fine.

Northwestern hasn’t forced a takeaway since October 1st – it took a brutal rain storm to come up with five against Penn State.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Minnesota defense will rise up at home.

There won’t be anything flashy about this. The four best Gopher ground games this year were in Huntington Bank – all wins.

Assume 200 rushing yards, assume dominating third downs on both sides of the ball, and assume Minnesota gets a win to make a bigger push into a stronger bowl slot.

Minnesota vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers might not be pretty, and they might not have their top running backs around anymore thanks to injury, but they’ve figured it out.

The stunning loss to a miserable Bowling Green overshadowed the wonderful run of five wins in the last six games. It stepped up defensively against Purdue, it got the passing game working just enough against Nebraska, and then came last week with a brilliant 326-yard rushing day against Maryland.

Northwestern isn’t scoring. It was able to move the offense enough to get 21 on Rutgers, but it couldn’t run a lick in the 56-7 loss to Nebraska or in the 33-7 loss to Michigan.

Dead last in the Big Ten against the run, Northwestern is 0-4 when allowing over 200 yards, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Northwestern Will Win

It’s 4-0 when allowing fewer than 200 rushing yards.

When the Wildcats have problems with the run defense, they get gouged. When they’re holding up and taking control of the game with their own offense, they go all Northwestern. It’s nothing pretty, but it gets the job done.

Minnesota hasn’t been able to come up with the same offensive game twice, especially through the air.

Northwestern has to get to Gopher quarterback Tanner Morgan and make him press – he can’t get comfortable and be accurate. Will he hit 84% of his passes like he did in the win over Nebraska, or will he complete 39% like he did in the loss to Bowling Green?

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

How much do you believe in trends?

Northwestern has been able to adapt and adjust, going L-W-L-W all the way through its slate so far – and it’s coming off the loss to Michigan. However, there’s a reason for that.

Indiana State, Ohio, Rutgers.

Northwestern was able to step up and win three of the winnable games, and Minnesota isn’t making things easy on anyone right now.

Third down conversions aren’t going to be Northwestern’s friend, especially against a Minnesota ground game that will get past 200 yards.

Why Minnesota Will Win

Minnesota used to be beautiful.

It beat Michigan back in mid-January, it won a thriller over Purdue, and ….

Boom. The team crashed and burned over the last month, losing seven games including a total clunker to Northwestern. The fight is still there at times, but there simply hasn’t been any luck from the outside and the defense has slipped into the abyss.

So what’s the positive? The Gophers are still solid inside, they don’t screw up and turn the ball over all that often, and no team in America has made more free throws.

And Northwestern is bad.

The Wildcats can’t rebound, they don’t get to the free throw line, and …

Why Northwestern Will Win

Minnesota is awful at the moment.

The rebounding has gone bye-bye, the defense from three has been a disaster, and this is one of the nation’s worst shooting teams. The Wildcats were able to beat the Gophers by simply playing decent defense.

Minnesota hit just 4-of-27 from the field in the 67-59 win, and that’s been a theme. The team hasn’t hit 40% from the field in any of the last four games and hasn’t hit double-digit threes since January.

On the flip side, Northwestern has been shooting better, it’s moving the ball around well, and slow and steady might just win the race. Don’t turn the ball over a tone, and the Cats might have this.

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is too good to keep playing this poorly, but there hasn’t been any signs of life.

The shooting just isn’t good enough, but can Northwestern stay as hot from three as it’s been over the last few games? No, but Minnesota’s defense simply isn’t doing enough.

However, Minnesota will force a few more turnovers, it’ll keep attacking the rim, and it’ll make more free throws in an ugly, ugly win.

What’s Going To Happen

Where did this Northwestern team come from?

After losing 12 in a row and 17 of 18, it won two of its last three games including a stunning regular season finale over Penn State. Along the way, it was rocked twice by Minnesota.

The Gophers couldn’t seem to do much of anything right over the final month of the season – losing six in seven before destroying Nebraska – but beating Northwestern 83-57 in late February was a rare good moment.

The Wildcats can’t score, it can’t hit the boards, and it can’e do much of anything from the outside. It also can’t take the ball away.

Minnesota can’t force takeaways, either, but it’s great at dominating the glass,  and it doesn’t turn the ball over enough for Northwestern to generate a slew of easy points.

Second-chance points will be the difference – Minnesota will get them, and Northwestern won’t.
