Washington State vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

Is anything going right during this three-game losing streak?

The Cougars are struggling to score, but the defense has been able to step it up and keep the team in games.

It bounced back from the rough day against Oregon to keep everyone in the next four games – including USC and Utah – to under 370 yards.

It’s not like Stanford is going to rip it up.

The Cardinal have slowed down the turnovers, but there isn’t enough of a ground game to worry about and the passing game isn’t consistent.

But …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford will be more than happy to be in a close, low scoring, tight game.

Washington State doesn’t make a ton of mistakes, but it’s not good on third downs and Stanford is the best in the Pac-12 at coming up with third down stops. The D will dial it up on a few key plays here and there to stall drives.

The O hasn’t turned it over multiple times in any of the last five games, it’s one of the best teams in the nation at limiting penalties, and all of those little things should matter because …

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford has problems against good running teams, and that’s not Wazzu.

This is a ball control team that relies on the defense, but it only hit the 100-yard mark three times so far and has yet to run to run for 150.

Stanford is 3-0 when allowing fewer than 160 rushing yards and 0-5 when it doesn’t.

Utah vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

Everyone has dealt with a ton by this point in the season, but the Utes started things off in Gainesville, Florida, had trips to Arizona State and UCLA along the way, dealt with a tough Oregon State team, and the 43-42 win over USC was a fight.

The two weeks off after the huge win over USC should work wonders.

The Utah run defense is the Utah run defense and the Washington State offense is the Washington State offense – there won’t be a lot happening on the ground from the Cougar attack.

It’s the Ute pass defense that could and should be the difference, leading the Pac-12 allowing 280 yards per game even after dealing with Caleb Williams and the high-powered Trojan attack.

Wazzu will hit a slew of short-range passes, but the Utah defensive backs can hit and should keep the big plays to a minimum.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Washington State Will Win

The Washington State defense has been outstanding.

It might not have Utah’s tough guy reputation, but it’s been good overall, it leads the Pac-12 in scoring D, and it has only been gouged once in the loss Oregon.

It works around a pass rush that keeps on coming with a ton of tackles for loss along with the pressure on the quarterback. On the other side, Wazzu has to limit the takeaways and can’t give Utah anything easy.

The Utes are 4-0 with multiple turnovers and 2-1 when they don’t generate a few mistakes. The Washington State offense has been more careful with the ball, there aren’t fumbles, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Washington State defense doesn’t force enough mistakes.

Utah isn’t going to do anything too difficult here. It’s going to blast away, Cameron Rising will hit his third down throws, and the offensive line will hold its own against the Washington State defensive front.

It’ll be a fight on a Thursday night, and Utah hasn’t done well lately away from Salt Lake City against good teams, but it will put together a good overall performance to grind through.

Washington State vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

This hasn’t been the Washington State offense it was supposed to be – it’s been good, but it’s not its normal dominant passing self. That’s fine because the defense is getting it done.

So the Cougars couldn’t slow down Oregon or keep USC off the board – almost no one can. The D has been solid against the run – no one has hit 200 yards yet – and the secondary is holding up well enough in a bend-but-don’t-break sort of way.

And yes, the offense is fine. It’s scoring when it gets the chance, Cameron Ward is working around the interceptions, and everything should click a little better against an Oregon State defense that doesn’t bring the pass rush.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Oregon State Will Win

Sorry to get mystical, but there’s something about this Oregon State team.

It got rocked by Utah in Salt Lake City, but it gave USC all it could handle and it found a way to get it done late against Fresno State and Stanford – pulling off a miracle against the Cardinal.

The defense isn’t doing anything too special, but it’s holding up okay against the run – even if it’s giving up 4.6 yards per carry – and the secondary is doing just enough late in games to stay alive.

Washington State doesn’t have a running game to worry about, the O doesn’t stay on the field long enough – Oregon State should have the ball for 35 minutes – and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State should be able to hold up late.

The Oregon State quarterback situation is still a question mark with starter Chance Nolan questionable at best. He was out against Stanford, but Ben Gulbranson got the job done in the thriller.

The difference this week will be the pressure no matter who’s at quarterback – Washington State can get to the quarterback a whole lot better than the Cardinal can.

USC vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars have the makeup and potential to finally be able to crack the USC code.

The Trojans are struggling on defense, but they’re able to come up with the really big plays at the right time. However, Washington State has been able to push past its mistakes – just budget in two turnovers and go from there – to keep on winning.

The pass rush is right there with the best in the nation – you have to pressure Caleb Williams and not let the downfield plays develop – and the run defense is allowing fewer than 100 yards per game.

Can Wazzu handle itself in a tough situation? It managed to come through late against Wisconsin to pull out the win even though things weren’t going all that well, it rallied back to give Oregon problems at home in a shootout loss, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why USC Will Win

Yeah, the Cougar turnovers.

USC has a funky way of raising its game when it absolutely has to.

Oregon State should’ve won in the 17-14 loss. It held down the Trojan offense, it had everything here for the taking, and then Caleb Williams marched the attack to the game-winning drive to pull it out of the fire.

The four takeaways from the D helped.

Stanford was able to move the ball with almost perfect balance, and it all went bye-bye with USC taking the ball away five times.

Washington State has been able to get away with multiple turnovers in all five games, and it’ll be in big trouble against USC depending on the timing of the mistakes.

The more pressure on Ward, the better, and here comes the Pac-12’s leading pass rush to force him to hurry and force those turnovers.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Again, USC has a way of figuring this out.

Just when you think it might be in big trouble, it makes a big play look so easy it seems like there was never anything to worry about.

This is a dangerous Washington State team that does a whole lot of things right, but the inability to keep Ward from getting hit will be the downfall on a few key second half drives.

It’s 2022 USC. There will be just enough brilliance sprinkled in with a whole lot of frustration.
