West Virginia vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia deserves a better record than 1-2.

JT Daniels is playing well, the offense is moving, the offensive line is great, the attack is 11th in the nation in scoring and 13th in total yards per game, and really, the defense is far better than it looked against Kansas two weeks ago.

The stats might not be there, but the Mountaineers have the defensive front to hold up against a relatively punchless Virginia Tech offense. However, the D hasn’t done much to take the ball away so far. That has to change.

Virginia Tech gave it up five times in the opener against Old Dominion, and hasn’t given it up since. Be +2 in turnover margin, pull off the upset.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies stopped with the mistakes, and everything changed.

Along with stopping the turnovers, they’ve been flagged just ten times after getting hit with 15 penalties against ODU.

The running game isn’t coming up with big bursts, but it’s getting enough production to get by. The run defense has been a brick wall allowing 1.5 yards per carry, that’s leading to a slew of third-and-long situations, and that’s partly why this is one of the best Ds in America on third downs, allowing teams to convert just 17% of their chances.

On the flip side, for all of the positives on the West Virginia defense, it’s not coming up with third down stops, the team has its own penalty and turnover concerns, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

JT Daniels along with the West Virginia running game will be too much.

Yes, Virginia Tech’s defense has been incredible so far. Yes, it currently ranks among the best in the nation. And yes, Old Dominion, Boston College, and Wofford don’t have the attacks the Mountaineers are bringing into town.

There won’t be the problems like there were against Old Dominion, but Hokie QB Grant Wells will throw a few picks, Daniels will get just enough time to work, and the West Virginia will keep clawing its way back into the season.

Virginia Tech vs Wofford Game Preview

Why Wofford Will Win

So what’s going right so far for the Terriers?

There aren’t a lot of mistakes, there aren’t a slew of penalties, and the defense is doing a decent job against the run.

Virginia Tech is struggling on third downs, it couldn’t stop screwing up in the loss to Old Dominion, and there’s nothing happening down the field with the passing game. The Hokies are averaging just over nine yards per completion, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

You can’t win if you don’t score, son.

You have scored as many points this 2022 college football season as the Wofford Terriers have.

The team hasn’t been totally miserable, but the offense has been awful in the passing game, the running game is averaging just 83 yards per game, and it hasn’t converted in the red zone losing the first two games to Chattanooga and Elon by a combined score of 57-0.

Virginia Tech has had its struggles so far, but the defense is doing just fine, especially on third downs. It leads the nation in third down stops, allowing both Old Dominion and Boston College to convert just 2-of-15 chances.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a true scrimmage for the Hokies before getting West Virginia and then a tough run in the ACC.

They have to sharpen up the passing game a little more, the offensive line has to generate a push to get more than 3.5 yards per carry, and they have to take some chances to see what works.

It’s okay. It’s not like Wofford is going to score if it comes up with takeaways.

Boston College vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

That wasn’t how the season was supposed to start for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies were warned about the road game against a jacked up Old Dominion team looking for a big moment, and then they managed to make every mistake possible in the 20-17 upset loss.

New head coach Brent Pry took over a job that required some reworking, but the five turnovers, 14 penalties, and fourth quarter collapse led to the loss.

Boston College has the passing game to push the Hokie secondary, it has the ability to force mistakes, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

That wasn’t how the season was supposed to start for Boston College.

The Eagles had a winnable home game against Rutgers, the offense was going to be great out of the box – at least the passing game was going to take over – and then the ACC season was going to start.

Instead, there was absolutely no running game – not a total shock – three turnovers, and a rough 22-21 loss in the final minutes.

Virginia Tech should be able to control the clock, prevent BC from getting anywhere near 100 rushing yards, and it has to cut down on the mistakes.

Cut the penalties from last week in half, and keep the turnovers to two or fewer, and everything else will work with the lines able to hold up.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Considering what each team has ahead, it’s not a stretch to say this is an elimination game for the bowl season. At the very least, the loser will have a huge hill to climb.

It was the concern with Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Wells when he was at Marshall. When he was on, he was magnificent. When he was off, he could be a turnover machine, and sure enough, he threw four picks against Old Dominion.

He’ll be ultra-careful with the throws this week, and Keshawn King and the running game will take over just enough to make up for it. Boston College QB Phil Jurkovec will have a shot late, but the drive will come up just short.

Virginia Tech vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Virginia Tech is trying to figure it all out.

The Hokies aren’t totally starting over under new head coach Brent Pry, but they’re trying to put the pieces together on the fly, and that starts with a quarterback situation that’s down to Marshall transfer Grant Wells and South Carolina transfer Jason Brown.

The O line needs an overhaul, new parts need to find their way into the backfield, and Old Dominion has to take advantage of all of it.

The defensive side returns some good pass rushers, and the offense is loaded with experience. The receiving weapons are going to be a problem for the Sun Belt – ODU’s new league – but …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies will be fine.

No, the overall experience isn’t quite there, and yes, it would be nice to have a tune-up or two before dealing with a team full of veterans on like Old Dominion, but the linebacking corps is going to be strong, the secondary will be good enough, and no matter what the coaching staff goes with at the skill spots, the production will follow.

Yes, Old Dominion has plenty of good players, but the passing game has to prove it can be more efficient, the turnovers have to stop, and the pass defense has to show it can do more after a rough 2021.

As long as the lines are okay, Virginia Tech should be able to work out the kinks – Old Dominion isn’t that great, but …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a road game against a jacked up team looking to make a giant statement – Old Dominion is dangerous enough to pull this off.

It did it in 2018 with a stunning 49-35 home win over the Hokies – and this version is even better.

Virginia Tech is going to need a little while, but the lines will hold up, Brent Pry’s defense will come up with three takeaways, and it’ll be a better-than-it-seems win to kick off the season before the ACC season starts with Boston College.

Virginia Tech Hokies Preview 2022

So how does Virginia Tech get back to being the double-digit win program that makes a push for the ACC Championship – like it did in the mid-to-late 2000s and in 2016 – and get out of this rut of mediocrity?

Justin Fuente had his good moments as the head coach, but it always seemed like there were too many changes, too many personnel moves, and too many losses in the 50/50 games.

Even after last season, assume Clemson is the star of the ACC show, and Duke and – at least lately – Georgia Tech and Syracuse are going to struggle a wee bit, and then throw everyone else into a bucket and maybe a Wake Forest will come out, or a Pitt, or any of the other good programs.

Again, it’s about the 50/50 games – or the ones that Virginia Tech has a relatively equal shot of winning or losing.

How did it do against teams that finished with 5-to-7 wins? It was 3-5.

2000 was funky with missed games – Virginia Tech was 3-2 against teams that finished with 4-to-6 wins. 2019 and 2018 against teams that finished with 5-to-7 wins? 3-6.

How about that 2011 team that went to the Sugar Bowl? 5-0. How about that 2010 version that went to the Orange? 4-0.

In comes new head coach Brent Pry, a 52-year-old career assistant who knows how to crank up a tough defense. His job will be to provide some stability, work the transfer portal, and win the games that are there for the taking.

There’s no Clemson on the slate. There’s no brutal non-conference game. There are tough road games at North Carolina, Pitt, and NC State, but would you fall off your chair if Virginia Tech won any or all of them? No.

The Hokies might not be there quite yet with all the holes that need filling and the relative lack of star power, but it you notice an early win over Boston College, and maybe a win over West Virginia, and maybe split those road games against North Carolina and Pitt …

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

2022 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Sean Tucker, Soph. Syracuse

Go ahead and name any one of about six or so ACC quarterbacks that might be the star of the league, and you probably won’t be wrong. Or, there’s a chance one of the others in the deep lot will rise up and be the best of the bunch. Meanwhile …

Sean Tucker might be the best running back in college football.

Everyone knows what’s coming with 34, and he still able to produce, running for almost 1,500 yards last year with 20 touchdowns with two receiving scores. He’s not all that big, but he’s tough, shifty, and really, really fast.

So yeah, the air attacks will take center stage in the conference, but Tucker should be the best of the offensive bunch.

2022 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DT Bryan Bresee, Jr. Clemson

Bresee has only been able to make 36 tackles with 5.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss in his two seasons, but that’s partly because he suffered a torn ACL early last year to go along with a shoulder issue.

When he’s right – and he’s expected to be ready to go – the 6-5, 300-pounder has the talent to be the best overall player in the country and possible No. 1 overall pick with too much athleticism, skill, and quickness to go along with his size.

ACC Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

ACC predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The ACC is sticking with the divisions for one more year, and then it all changes in 2023.

Next season, the conference will become one big blob of ACC, with each team getting three permanent opponents to deal with and a rotation happening among the other five teams on the slate.

Make sense?

It’ll be a 3-5-5 format, basically meaning every team plays everyone else in the conference over two seasons.

For now, the ACC continues to be just about the same.

Duke and Georgia Tech will fight for scraps, Clemson – despite not playing for the ACC Championship last year – should be in a battle with NC State for the top spot, and everyone else can beat anybody else in the ACC depending on the moment.

Road games matter, off weeks are huge, and the teams that don’t get Clemson – or, this year, NC State – will be very, very happy.
