Obviously, no one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Virginia Tech Hokies Offense 3 Things To Know

Before getting going, few teams are going to be more fluid than Virginia Tech. Almost no one has dealt with the transfer portal more, and no one has had crazier things happen to its receiving corps.

The Hokies finished 86th in the nation in total offense and averaged just under 31 points per game, but there are plenty of reasons for hope for a huge seasons, despite all the wild changes.

Start with that receiving corps. Leading touchdown guy Damon Hazelton – coming up with eight scores – is now a Missouri Tiger, and the 16 combined 2019 catches from Hezekiah Grimsley and Phil Patterson are leaving the building. However, most of the other transfers leaving were reserves who hadn’t done much, and 6-3, 205-pound Evan Fairs is coming in from Kansas after making 28 career grabs.

Leading receiver Tre Turner is back after making 34 grabs for 553 yards and four scores, and speedy Tayvion Robinson will do more after a good freshman season. Tight end Dalton Keene was taken in the third round by New England, but junior James Mitchell is back – he’s a solid deep threat.

And all of the receivers have a rising star throwing their way.

[jwplayer fXMYAJSw]

Hendon Hooker flirted with the transfer portal before last year, came back, and took over the starting gig after the first month of the season. The 6-4, 228-pounder hit 61% of his passes for 1,555 yards and 13 touchdowns, but his big claim to fame was being careful with the ball – the two interceptions he threw in the loss to Virginia were his only two picks of the year. He also ran for five scores – he’s the franchise star.

6-4, 245-pound sophomore Quincy Patterson is a decent prospect battling former Oregon transfer Braxton Burmeister to be the main backup.

The transfer portal took away plenty of receivers, but it also brought the Hokies some terrific running backs – a must with leading rusher Deshawn McClease leaving early. 5-9, 205-pound grad transfer Khalil Herbert comes in from Kansas where he ran for 1,735 career yards and 14 scores. He’s ready to roll right away, but the instant eligibility of speedy Rutgers star Raheem Blackshear is still in question.

Devastating as a runner or a receiver, Blackshear will eventually fill a variety of roles – he ran for 912 yards and six scores and caught 80 passes for 810 yards and six touchdowns in just over two seasons. Combine these two with 5-11, 182-pound sophomore Keshawn King – he was third on the team with 340 yards and two scores – and the Hokies have a nice backfield.

They’ll all have a great-looking line to work behind. Three reserve options left through the transfer portal, but all five starters – all underclassmen last year – are expected to return including All-ACC performers tackle Christian Darrisaw and guard Lecitus Smith on the left side. It’s a big, good line that should become a big plus.

NFL Draft 2020: ACC

The ACC and the NFL Draft haven’t had a great relationship over the last several years when it comes to sending bulk talent to the next level, but it has been fantastic in the first round.

Clemson has done its part, and Florida State has been a decent feeder from time to time, but last year it was Duke’s Daniel Jones who made the most noise at the sixth overall pick. In all, seven ACC players were selected on Day One last year, and just three of them were from Clemson.

Six were selected early in 2018 – highlighted by Lamar Jackson being picked at the 32 by Baltimore – and four went in the first round in 2017.

The league has done okay to showcase itself, but this year should be a bit of an issue.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

The line for the total ACC players drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is just 3.5.

The last time the ACC had fewer than four players selected early was 2003, but that was the last year Miami was in the Big East. If you want to count all the current ACC programs, it’s been a long, long time since there weren’t been four players picked in the first.

This year, start with the obvious. Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons will likely go in the top five – top ten, at worst – and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton will be one of the first offensive tackles off the board.

And then it all dries up in a huge hurry.

Can Clemson CB AJ Terrell find his way in? That’s not a given.

Will Tiger WR Tee Higgins make it into the first round? Ehhhhhh, it’s possible, but hardly a sure thing. Terrell has a better shot than Higgins.

So set the bar at three. Outside of Higgins, there isn’t another ACC player who’ll likely be sniffing the top 32. Florida State RB Cam Akers and Virginia CB Bryce Hall are some of the only other ACC players who’ll be in the mix for the second round, much less the first.

So …

[lawrence-related id=434346]

How Many ACC Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

It’s going to be a historically weak first round for the ACC.

With Miami not holding up its end of the bargain, and with Florida State a bit down in the NFL talent department, it’s up to Clemson to send its superstars to the next level, but the tsunami is coming in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Do you feel like sticking with the side of history and go with the hope that Higgins is a first rounder? He’s got top 32 talent, and it’s not a crazy call. Best of all, the over is where all the value is. The ACC will definitely get three players drafted in the first round, but …

That’s it. Expect the under on the 3.5.

Prediction: Under

ACC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which ACC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit – that’s obviously a huge deal in the ACC – but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best ACC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

ACC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

Virginia Tech (8-3) vs. Virginia (8-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Virginia Will Win

Okay, Bryce Perkins. Now it’s on.

The Virginia star quarterback failed to hit half of his passes in last year’s game against Virginia Tech, but he was still brilliant with 259 passing yards, three touchdowns, 112 rushing yards …

And one very, very big fumbled handoff that ended last year’s insane 34-31, Hokie win in overtime.

Now it’s Perkins’ time for redemption.

He’s had an okay year, but not a special one. Even so, been stronger on the ground – with two 100-yard rushing days before the blowout win over Liberty – and with no picks in his last three games. He’s playing his best all-around ball of the year at just the right time.

On the other side, the great Cavalier pass rush has to be effective from the start. The Virginia Tech offensive line is doing a good job, but it struggled a bit against the outstanding pressure from the Pitt D, allowing three sacks and ten tackles for loss. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies still beat the Panthers 28-0.

Freshman quarterback Hendon Hooker was so bothered by the Pitt pass rush that he averaged close to 12 yards per pass with two touchdowns, no picks, and connected on ten of his 13 throws.

The guy has been unflappable.

He’s not making mistakes, he’s taking what the defenses are giving him, and he’s providing a downfield element that might just change around the Hokie program.

Virginia Tech has won six of its last seven games – Hooker wasn’t able to go against Notre Dame.

He’s been great, and the defensive side has stepped up its play, too. The Hokie run defense has been a wall, allowing fewer than 65 rushing yards in each of its last three games, and fewer than 100 in five of its last seven after gettin ripped up by Duke.

Virginia’s ground game has stepped it up with 16 touchdown runs in the last five games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever (pause to take breath) ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER mess with a college football streak.

Most of the players in this game were barely running around the last time Virginia was able to get by Virginia Tech.

2003. 15 straight years. This time around, the ACC Coastal title is on the line with the winner going off to face Clemson next weekend.

This Virginia team is good, it’s playing well, Perkins is terrific, the linebacking corps is a killer – with the parts to bother Hooker the Hokie all game long – and the game is in Charlottesville.

Virginia Tech is playing better, Hooker is that good, the defense is coming up with two straight shutouts, and …

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever …

Pitt (7-3) vs. Virginia Tech (7-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Pitt Will Win

So here’s the deal. If Virginia Tech wins this game, next week’s showdown against Virginia is the for the ACC Coastal title. But if Pitt wins, it’s going back to the ACC championship if it beats Boston College next week and the Hokies get by the Cavaliers.

First, the Panthers have to take care of business with a defense that’s been every bit as nasty at times as any in the ACC.

Pitt has the nation’s best pass rush – coming though time and again with five sacks to stop North Carolina in last week’s overtime thriller. The Virginia Tech offensive line is fine, but it’s not a killer, and it’s not going to blast away enough for the running game to take over.

To pull this off, the Hokies have to be solid at moving the chains, getting past the swarming rush, and hit the third down plays. Pitt, though, has been excellent at coming up with the key stops – again, to beat this into the ground – because it’s getting to the quarterback.

The Hokies have rushed for 200 yards or more in four of their last five games. So far this year they’re 1-3 when they’re under 140 yards – struggling way too much in the win over a miserable Old Dominion team – and 6-0 when they’re over.

How many times this season has Pitt allowed more than 140 yards?

Once. To Penn State. No one else has been able to average more than four yards per carry.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Virginia Tech has a pass rush, too.

The Hokies are getting enough out of their defense to hold on in a few shootouts, and come up big lately in big moments against everyone but Notre Dame.

The pressure in the backfield is getting the job done for a run defense that’s holding its own, and unlike last year, Pitt doesn’t have the ground attack good enough to take over.

Pitt is able to survive on just enough of passing attack to get by at times – Kenny Pickett threw for 359 yards against UNC – but it’s not a consistent attack. Virginia Tech is a bit better equipped to handle the Pitt pass rush than the other way around.

Hendon Hooker has the mobility and the accuracy to keep on pushing the ball down the field when everything is swarming around him. The freshman quarterback has yet to throw an interception in his five games of major work, he’s averaging over ten yards per pass, and he’s taking off just enough to make defenses worry.

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt’s been playing with fire just a wee bit.

Since getting blasted by Virginia in the opener, seven of Pitt’s last nine games have been decided by seven points or fewer, and the other two were decided by ten points.

This team knows how to handle itself in tight spots, but in Virginia Tech’s final home game of the year, it’s about to dial up something special.

The defense has been fantastic over the last three weeks – it all started right after the 43-41 win over North Carolina – and it’s going to be every bit as effective up front as Pitt’s D.

The difference? The Hokies will run just enough to be okay. Pitt won’t be able to get its running attack going at all.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies are finding ways to win.

They’re not consistent enough defensively, but they’re getting the job done offensively and the D has clamped down in three of the last four games.

Now everything is on the table. Win the last three games against Georgia Tech, Pitt and at Virginia, and it’s off to the ACC Championship.

There’s no reason to work too hard on this – start running, and keep running.

The Hokies have hit the 220-yard mark in three of the last four games with a good rotation of backs to go along with whoever is under center.

The Georgia Tech run defense has been a wee bit better after getting hammered early, but it’s still allowing over four yards per carry and 150 yards or more in every game but the early win over USF.

Back in the mix after missing the Notre Dame game, freshman QB Hendon Hooker is the playmaker who’s making it all go. He’s not making mistakes, and he’s running well enough to tear off yards in chunks against this defensive front.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The record isn’t great, but the Yellow Jackets really are playing a whole lot better. They beat Miami, and they pushed Pitt and Virginia over the last few weeks.

Finally, the passing game is starting to kick it in. James Graham is coming off a 229-yard, two-score day in the loss to Virginia. Now he gets to go against a leaky Hokie secondary that’s picking off a lot of passes, but is allowing over 300 yards a game with 14 touchdowns in the last five games.

He doesn’t have to go off, but as long as he’s merely okay, and if the offense can catch a few breaks on takeaways, the Yellow Jackets should be in the game.

There haven’t been a whole lot of big plays coming from the defense, but Virginia Tech has fumbling problems and is next-to-last in the ACC in giveaways.

What’s Going To Happen

Will Virginia Tech be on letdown alert with the big games coming up with Coastal title implications? Georgia Tech – at home – is doing just enough to hang around, but the offense isn’t good enough to put together a full four quarters to pull this off.

Just when it seems like the game is about to slip away for the Hokies, they’ll get two second half scoring drives to survive and advance. The Yellow Jackets won’t have an answer.
