Sometimes the games don’t live up to the hype.  In what was billed as a showdown between the top two teams in the West division of the wide open Mountain West Conference, San Jose State answered the bell.  UNLV, however, looked as though they set their alarms for a Saturday kickoff instead of one on Friday night.  The result was a thorough 40-7 whipping that puts the Spartans in the driver’s seat for a berth in the conference championship game.

On a perfect night for football at CEFCU Stadium, San Jose State unveiled yet another offensive weapon, as backup tight end, Dominick Mazotti, filled in for regular starter, Sam Olson, and proceeded to haul in 7 catches for an even 100 yards and the first touchdown of his career.  Mazotti had a total of two grabs for 15 yards on the season entering Friday night.  UNLV seemed determined to not let the dangerous wide receiving core of the Spartans beat them, mixing in double coverage and safety help to take Elijah Cooks and others away.  That may work against an inexperienced quarterback, but not against the red-hot Chevan Cordeiro.  Cordeiro, the reigning Mountain West Conference offensive player of the week, simply went through his progressions to take what was open–often Mazotti in the middle of the field.  He also scrambled for multiple first downs, sliding down at opportune times to avoid the fate of his counterpart.

One of the reasons for the excitement around the contest was the matchup of the top two quarterbacks in the conference, Cordeiro and UNLV’s Doug Brumfield.  Unfortunately, the Rebels signal caller took a couple of hard shots to the ground and was seen headed back to the locker room late in the first quarter, never to return.  Even prior to his exit, the Spartans D was up to the task in a dominating first quarter, denying the Rebels on all three of their 3rd down attempts, and frustrating Brumfield to a 1-6 start for a measly 8 yards.  Though the scoreboard only read 7-0 at that point, San Jose State was on the move again, and would soon punch in their second TD of the night—a Cordeiro keeper on a zone read, an effective play all night long.  What transpired next effectively sealed the result: Cameron Friel was pressed into action due to Brumfield’s exit, and the early returns were disastrous.  On his second play, the shotgun snap sailed over his head, and the Spartans recovered.  One play later, Cordeiro was in the end zone on another QB keeper, and while the PAT was missed, at 20-0 and facing a backup quarterback, the Spartans were all but in the clear.

The Rebels followed with their best drive of the first half, aided by a trick play, to get into the red zone.  Any future comeback hopes were likely extinguished when head coach, Marcus Arroyo, bypassed a chip shot field goal and was denied on 4th and goal.  The Spartans followed with one more solid drive to finish the half, capped off by Taren Schive’s career long 43-yard field goal and a 23-0 lead at the break.  Cordeiro ended the half with 180 total yards, and Kairee Robinson added 61 yards rushing, on only 9 carries, for an average of seven yards per rush.  Offensive coordinator, Kevin McGiven, called a great first half, keeping the Rebels D off-balanced and frankly looking lost.  Head coach, Brent Brennan, did not have much to harp on during halftime other than keeping his troops charged up for the final 30 minutes.

The second half was much of the same, until Brennan lifted off the gas and went conservative against his good friend Arroyo.  The first two San Jose State drives of the half ended with points (a short Schive FG and then the Mazotti TD reception) to make it 33-0 and a full-on rout.  The Rebels followed with their lone scoring drive of the night, aided by two Spartan personal fouls–a Friel to Senika McKie 14 yard toss late in the third.  The scoring was capped by a beautiful Cordeiro rope to Cooks on a slant route for 20 yards.

For the third straight game, the Spartans virtually doubled up their opponents in total yards and first downs–difficult to do unless you’re Alabama.  They’ve also done it in different ways and with contributions from many on the roster.  Tonight it was Mazotti’s turn, while the wide receivers drew much more attention from the defensive game plan.  But it all starts of course, with Cordeiro, the early clubhouse leader for player of the year in the conference.  He accounted for 339 total yards and 4 TD’s in a first place showdown.  There are not many more impactful transfers across the country at this point in the season.  The massively improved offensive line play since the bye week cannot be overlooked and is a testament to the coaching staff.  Also not to be forgotten is the defense.  Yes, they benefited from Brumfield’s early exit, but they put together a great start before that, and much like the offense, the key plays are coming from a variety of emerging stars each week.

San Jose State will now get an extra day of rest before another big division matchup, at struggling Fresno State next Saturday night.  The Bulldogs are in Boise this weekend for a Saturday night battle against the Broncos.  For the Rebels, much will hinge on the health of Brumfield, as they enter a tough two game stretch–home against Air Force and a trip to Notre Dame.  There are still a lot of football games to be played, but the Spartans find themselves in the position of frontrunner and are showing no signs of slowing down.

UNLV vs San Jose State Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

What happened? How did UNLV all of a sudden go from a perennial speed bump to a player in the Mountain West?

It helps that the league has crashed, but the team is taking advantage of its opportunities. Start with this – it’s not screwing up.

The penalties are there, but they’re not a killer, and the turnovers were non-existent until the two last week against New Mexico that kept the 31-20 win clear than it needed to be.

It’s not an overstatement to say this might be the best the UNLV defense has played in at least ten years, the offense is balanced enough to be versatile, and again, turnover margin. The Rebels are second in the nation in that.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why San Jose State Will Win

San Jose State is even better.

It’s not better in turnover margin, but it only gave up the ball up twice so far, and outside of a blowout win over Western Michigan, it’s even better at avoiding tons of flags.

The Spartans have stepped up the offense since the close loss at Auburn, but it’s the defensive side that’s getting it done. UNLV will be able to run on this group, but the pass defense has been stifling even though the pass rush hasn’t been anything special.

Yes, UNLV leads the Mountain West in scoring offense and is second behind Air Force in total offense, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Utah State and New Mexico. Those are UNLV’s two Mountain West wins – that’s no big deal this year.

It played well in a loss to Cal, and the O worked against a solid North Texas team, but San Jose State went on the road and took out Wyoming, blew out Western Michigan, and hung with Auburn for four quarters.

San Jose State doesn’t have the offense the Rebels do, but it should be able to run the ball just enough to keep them from owning the time of possession battle.

It’ll be a close, fun Friday night game with the defense beating the offense.

San Jose State & UNLV in a big game

Jeremy and Matt break down Week 6 of Mountain West play which is a full set of conference games with all 12 teams in action. Who would have thought that San Jose State vs. UNLV could be an early decider for the West Divison this year. Fresno State vs. Boise State was to be some elite game but now both teams enter with questions with new quarterbacks and part of a coaching staff for the Broncos.

There is also the Norvell Bowl on Friday night with Nevada taking on Colorado State in a game between two not-so-great teams. San Diego State host Hawaii and the goal is likely to have Braxton Burmeister be healthy and finish the game under center.

Week 6 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

Week 6 of Mountain West play is here. There are some interesting lines this week, so where should you lose your money this time?

Week 6 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

A look at the Mountain West betting odds for Week 6

Contact/Follow @J0shFr3d & @MWCwire

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider and inputted at time of writing.

The Mountain West started conference play with a bang. We went 2-4 to begin conference play and are 24-27 on the year. Not great and we’re still underwater on the year, but last week was a great ride to watch depending on who you ask.

Colorado State @ Nevada (-3.5, O/U 44)

Colorado State has hit the under in every game they have played this season. And it doesn’t look like that is going to change anytime soon. Neither offense is good and the defenses aren’t great either. Nevada has been able to produce a number of turnovers this year. This one becomes a defensive battle and the under hits again.

Pick: Under

UNLV @ San Jose State (-7, O/U 52.5)

The swing on the line in this one is kind of crazy. It opened at UNLV -3.5 and has now swung to San Jose State -7. A 10.5 point swing seems insane to think about in the Mountain West. UNLV has been a suprise team this season and I don’t think that changes here, with the Rebels hanging onto first place in the West.

Pick: UNLV +7

AIR Force @ UTAH State (+10.5, O/U 54.5)

Air Force struggled against Navy, but that was mostly due to their own demise as they turned the ball over twice and couldn’t finish drives. Against Utah State, the Falcons will get back on track. The Aggies are giving up close to 200 yards rushing per game and that’s not going to get better here.

Pick: Air Force -10.5

Wyoming @ New Mexico (+3.5, O/U 36.5)

New Mexico’s defense has had a major turn around under DC Rocky Long. Their offense on the other hand, hasn’t been much to look at. New Mexico has managed to win the past two matchups between these two schools and with a home crowd on their side the Lobos have a chance to make it three in a row.

Pick: New Mexico SU (+137)

Fresno State @ Boise State (-7.5 O/U 45.5)

The Bulldogs are still going to be without starting quartback Jake Haener. The Broncos flipped a switch in the second half against San Diego State last week. Boise State is still the team to beat in the Mountain West and will prove it again this week against Fresno State.

Pick: Boise State -7.5

Hawai’i @ San Diego State (-22, O/U 48)

I know Hawai’i is a bad team, but the Aztecs haven’t exactly inspired confidence on offense either. And San Diego State will probably be down to their third string freshman quarterback if Braxton Burmeister can’t go. San Diego State will win, but I think Hawai’i will cover.

Pick: Hawai’i +22

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Mountain West has seen a lot of different teams this year be better and worse than expected. Fresno State is playing with a backup quarterback and looked lost and bad against the loss against UConn. UNLV is surprising us all and is seven points away from being undefeated, yeah that is right.

Those Rebels are facing the 3-1 San Jose State Spartans that regained its 2020 magic and a slow start vs. Portland State and in a game that could determine the West Division representative for the Mountain West title game.

Boise State was looking left for dead in an embarrassing loss to UTEP,  but then came in Dirk Koetter from the analyst roll to offensive coordinator and used two quarterbacks to crush San Diego State. Broncos fans are wondering if it was a one-week boost or if this is sustainable.

This is all to say that the Mountain West is wild and pretty this year and once again these power polls took a turn with some movement after surprising results from last week and some interesting games heading into Week 6.

Is Marcus Arroyo The Frontrunner For Mountain West Coach of the Year?

UNLV has emerged as one of the top Mountain West teams

Contact/Follow @Michaelbraydaly & @MWCwire

Can Arroyo win the Coach of the Year award?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

In five games, Marcus Arroyo has UNLV in a position to compete for a Mountain West Championship in 2022. If UNLV stays on the right path for the rest of the season, he could be in line to win the 2022 Mountain West Coach of the Year award.

Not many people expected the Rebels to be a conference contender in 2022. He outperformed expectations in the early part of the season and put his team at the top of the Mountain West.

In the most recent game, UNLV erased a 17-0 deficit and defeated New Mexico 31-20. That game showed UNLV’s resilience and ability to fight back.

UNLV is tied with Boise State for the most wins in the Mountain West in the season. With a 4-1 overall record and a 2-0 Mountain West record, UNLV sits atop the West Division.

The program already doubled its win total from last season. With two wins in the Mountain West, UNLV has the same number of wins in conference play from last year. The Rebels finished the 2021 season with a 2-10 record. The 2021 season began with an 0-8 start.

This season is off to a much better start and the Rebels are poised to have the program’s first winning season since 2013. The Rebels went 7-6 in 2013 and have not won more than five games in a single season since then.

Doug Brumfield has seemed to be the answer at quarterback. In the past, the quarterback position was a problem, but Brumfield has been a consistent presence for the team.

The upcoming schedule will dictate how the season ultimately plays out for UNLV, but regardless of the end result, the start of the season is an accomplishment for Arroyo and his program. The next five games for UNLV are against San Jose State, Air Force, Notre Dame, San Diego State, and Fresno State. San Jose State has been the only future opponent without a really bad loss in 2022. Air Force, Notre Dame, San Diego State, and Fresno State all stumbled at some point since the start of the season.

UNLV could have trouble in the next three games against San Jose State, Air Force, and Notre Dame. On the other side, the games against San Diego State and Fresno State are looking like winnable games for the Rebels with recent struggles from the two teams. The conference is up for grabs and UNLV can catch the college football world by surprise with a deep run in the second half of the season. Having a great start to the season turned out to be a great cushion for the rest of the way.

If Arroyo can lead the Rebels to a bowl game, he should be in the conversation for the Mountain West Coach of the Year. He is looking to join John Robinson as the only other UNLV head coach to win the award.
