NFL playoffs strategy guide: Understanding the Tennessee Titans

What you need to know about the Titans.

It’s been a long NFL season, but the postseason is finally here. Now, you probably didn’t get to study the entire playoff field in-depth during the regular season. No worries. We’ve put together guides that will help you become an instant expert on all 12 teams making up the field.

These guides will tell you how each team uses its personnel on both sides of the ball, what its strategic tendencies are and how efficient the team is based on several advanced metrics.

In this guide, we’ll be looking at the Tennessee Titans, who claimed the last wild card spot in the AFC with a 9-7 record. Let’s get to know them…

TITANS OFFENSE

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The Titans will base out of 11 personnel for the most part, with A.J. Brown and Corey Davis playing on the outside and Adam Humphries in the slot. Jonnu Smith is the tight end, and Tennessee will put one or two more tight ends on the field when they want to run the ball.

Since Ryan Tannehill took over as the starting quarterback, the Titans have been one of the more play-action heavy teams in the league. When Tennessee wants to take a shot downfield, it’s almost always off of a play fake. Brown has been Tannehill’s favorite target on those plays. Smith, the tight end, has also emerged as a big-play threat, but he does a lot of his damage after the catch.

Derrick Henry finished the season as the NFL’s leading rusher. He’s known as a downhill runner, but the hulking back has actually done most of his damage on zone running plays. Tennessee’s ground game is mostly run under center, which is how offensive coordinator Arthur Smith likes to run his zone-blocking schemes. That allows Henry to build up momentum before he approaches the line of scrimmage.

TITANS DEFENSE

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Defensive coordinator Dean Pees loves him some defensive backs. The Titans rarely play with more than two linebackers on the field. Former first-round pick Kenny Vaccaro is the third safety on the field when Tennessee plays its sub-packages, but he’s basically a linebacker these days. He’ll play alongside stud LB Rashaan Evans in obvious pass situations. The Titans corner depth has been tested over the second half of the season after Malcolm Butler was put on IR in November and Adoree Jackson missed the last four games. Jackson was back at practice before this week, however. He’ll likely take Tye Smith’s spot in the starting lineup.

The Titans aren’t big on blitzing, but Pees is liable to send pass rushers from anywhere on the field. His “creeper” pressures have given offensive lines fits on third downs. For the most part, the Titans will play zone, but when they do play man, it will almost always be with one safety — superstar Kevin Byard — playing the deep middle and helping to protect the seams.

Even with the defensive backfield getting hit hard with injuries in the second half, the backend of the Titans defense has held up just fine. It’s the pass rush, which has struggled to get home without the aid of Pees. Despite that, the secondary has not given up too many big plays. The front may not put a lot of pressure on opposing passers but it has been stout against the run.

WATCH: Zion Williamson gives own injury update following first full practice

Zion Williamson is getting closer to taking the court in an NBA game for the first time.

Zion Williamson is getting closer to taking the court in an NBA game for the first time.

According to Will Guillory of The Athletic (and other local New Orleans reporters), the 2019 first overall draft pick went through a full practice Thursday for the first time since undergoing surgery in October.

Williamson suffered a torn right lateral meniscus, then was ruled out for 6 to 8 weeks after having the injury repaired on Oct. 21.

The Pelicans (11-23) admitted to being particularly cautious with their top selection’s health, but Zion began working his way into practices a few weeks ago and traveled with the team. On Dec. 28th, the Pelicans showed off Williamson’s progress by tweeting out a video of the rookie dunking pregame.

Head coach Alvin Gentry still would not set a firm date for the rookie’s NBA debut when the coach talked with reporters Thursday.

When asked about how he will know he’s ready to play again, Williamson himself said, “It’ll probably be one of those moments, like when it came to my college decision, I’ll (wake) up and I’ll know,” according to Guillory.

WATCH: Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa will announce NFL Draft decision on Monday

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa tweeted, “I’ll be making my decision on the 6th… God bless and Roll Tide,” following Wednesday’s 35-16 season-ending victory.

Alabama’s football season is over following a New Year’s Day Citrus Bowl win over Michigan. Now Tide fans have to wait through the weekend for the news that could hold the team’s fate for the next football season.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa tweeted, “I’ll be making my decision on the 6th… God bless and Roll Tide,” following Wednesday’s 35-16 season-ending victory.

The 21-year-old’s season was cut short on Nov. 16 following a hip injury. Monday, Tagovailoa will either announce that that game versus Mississippi State was his last as a player under Nick Saban and that the quarterback plans to enter the 2020 NFL Draft, or the 2017 National Championship Offensive MVP will announce that he’s heading back to Tuscaloosa.

In taking the field for nine games this season, Tagovailoa threw for 2,840 yards and 33 touchdowns with only three interceptions. Alabama finished the year 10-1 in games with the Hawai’i native at QB, the lone loss at the hands of the College Football Playoff top-seeded LSU Tigers on Nov. 9. Tagovailoa played in the game versus the Tigers 20 days after undergoing surgery to repair a high ankle sprain.

Tagovailoa’s storybook college career took one of its worse turns this season, but his heights included navigating injury in 2018, too. As a sophomore, he earned the starting quarterback job for the season then left the SEC Championship during the fourth quarter and underwent surgery to repair a high ankle sprain (on the opposite leg as the injury was this season) before returning to help the team to an Orange Bowl win, earning MVP honors.

As a freshman, Tagovailoa memorably entered the second half of the National Championship after serving only as a backup and helped lift the Tide to the title.

Longtime NFL coach Jack Del Rio is back in the league after a two-season hiatus, joining the Washington Redskins’ staff as Ron Rivera’s defensive coordinator.

He tweeted confirmation on New Year’s Day, saying he’s ready to get going:

Del Rio brings his 4-3 defense to Washington D.C., switching it up from the 3-4 scheme the team has used the past few seasons.

He last coached in the NFL in 2017, his final of three seasons as the Oakland Raiders’ head coach. Del Rio joined ESPN as an NFL analyst in August 2019.

No quarterback controversy here: Mitch Trubisky is the Chicago Bears’ starter for 2020.

No quarterback controversy here: Mitch Trubisky is the Chicago Bears’ starter for 2020.

At a year-end press conference on Tuesday, Bears GM Ryan Pace said, “We believe in Mitch and we believe in the progress he’s going to continue to make.”

Trubisky took a step back in 2019, producing a lower QB rating, pass completion percentage and touchdown total from what he did in 2018. He also proved inconsistent in pivotal moments, converting just 35.6% of his third-down attempts this season.

But that’s not a red flag for Pace or Bears coach Matt Nagy. At least not yet.

“This season was about regression and inconsistencies in way too many areas,” Pace said. “We have to learn from our failures, and we believe we have an opportunity to improve. We believe we have the right foundation and the right pieces in place, but we have to make the right decisions going forward.

WATCH: Jerry Jones sees himself ‘making a lot of changes in a lot of areas’

The Cowboys scored a season-high 47 points in their 2019 finale versus the Redskins Sunday, but that of course by no means offsets the very real need that team owner Jerry Jones feels to make a switch.

The Cowboys scored a season-high 47 points in their 2019 finale versus the Redskins Sunday, but that of course by no means offsets the very real need that team owner Jerry Jones feels to make a switch.

While the 77-year-old is not finishing the season by denouncing Jason Garrett as head coach, postgame Sunday he said simply, “I’ve made changes. And I can see myself making a lot of changes — in a lot of areas. The times call for that. I am about change.”

The win over Washington pushed the final 2019 record to 8-8, but .500 wasn’t good enough this season. It is Garrett’s 10th as head coach, and Dallas holds a mediocre 2-3 playoff record in that decade.

Sunday was the final game on the 53-year-old’s current contract. Many outlets (including Yahoo! and CBS Sports) report that the expectation is that Jones will allow that contract to simply expire this week without an extension.

The time after the final game of the season, though, included Jones praising Garrett a fair amount for the positive that Garrett brought to Jones’ organization.

Jones, though, made it quite clear he wasn’t tipping his hand on the coach’s future in Dallas, saying “There’s no door shut here, tonight,” and adding that he, “Wouldn’t do that here.”

WATCH: LeBron James reaches career assists milestone

The Associated Press naming LeBron James the Male Athlete of the Decade Sunday isn’t exactly a shock.

The Associated Press naming LeBron James the Male Athlete of the Decade Sunday isn’t exactly a shock.

In his last game as a 34-year-old that night, though, King James celebrated the award by hitting a career milestone in a selfless statistical category.

James dished out 13 assists as the Lakers beat the Mavericks 108-95, passing 9,000-career assists mark. LBJ is just the ninth NBA player to reach the benchmark.

LeBron added 13 points in the same game but acknowledged a shift away from his own scoring in his focus over the last two games of the decade.

“It was something that was instilled in me when I first picked up a basketball,” James told the AP about his ability to distribute the ball. “One of my earliest coaches said the best part of the game was to move side to side, attract the defense and get the teammate the open look.”

In Saturday’s game, James finished with 16 assists to push him toward the 9K mark.

The pace in James’ play and role in facilitating his teammates getting better shots is what the star and head coach Frank Vogel say helped end a four-game losing streak by the Lakers Saturday.

James’ turns 35-years-old Monday. He and the Lakers start 2020 hosting the Suns on new years day, now riding a pair of wins and still sit atop the Western Conference standings.

Marshawn Lynch scored a TD and the crowd in Seattle went nuts… and threw Skittles

Beast Mode is back.

Marshawn Lynch lit up the football world earlier this week when he signed a deal to return to the Seattle Seahawks, after virtually all of their running backs went down with injuries.

Well, Beast Mode hasn’t disappointed in his first game back, which is a huge one with the San Francisco 49ers, as the winner is crowned the NFC West champs.

Lynch hasn’t broken out for any big runs but in the fourth quarter he dove over a huge pile of big humans to score a touchdown.

CenturyLink Field went into hysterics, as NBC’s Cris Collinsworth was left in awe by the noise he heard when Lynch scored:

Listen to the crowd from this angle:

Lynch broke out a handshake celebration:

And Skittles rained down on the field:

Yup, it’s good to have Beast Mode back.

The Steelers (8-7) square-off against the Ravens (12-3), their AFC North rival, with their playoff hopes on the line. Baltimore won the first matchup of the season  in a 26-23 overtime thriller at Heinz Field back in Week 5 despite three interceptions from quarterback Lamar Jackson. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has said that he will rest Jackson and a handful of other starters for Sunday’s contest which bodes well for Pittsburgh.

After back-to-back losses to the Bills and Jets, the road to the postseason became more difficult for the Steelers. Mason Rudolph started the contest and completed 14 of 20 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown, but left the game early with a shoulder injury. Devlin Hodges came on in relief and tossed two interceptions. Running back James Conner was held to 32 yards on the ground and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster had just two catches for 22 yards. The Steelers lack of offense (30th in total yards) has been a problem all year long. If they are able to defeat the Ravens on Sunday afternoon, coupled with a Titans loss to the Texans, Pittsburgh will be the sixth seed and play in a Wild Card game.

While Pittsburgh is fighting for its playoff life, Baltimore is resting easy as the No. 1 seed in the division and has a first-round bye. The Ravens beat the Browns 31-15 behind another spectacular performance from Lamar Jackson. Jackson totaled 238 yards and three touchdowns through the air and 103 yards on the ground. As a team, the Ravens had nearly 250 yards rushing. Mark Andrews led the team in receiving with six catches for 93 yards and two scores. Another former Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III will get the start for Baltimore, his first since Week 17 in 2016 when he was a member of the Browns.

Five-time pro-bowler Marshawn Lynch signed with the Seattle Seahawks for $60,588 for Week 17 as they’re set to battle their NFC West rival, the San Francisco 49ers.

The Oakland native will also receive his playoff share plus whatever money he makes in new endorsement opportunities, such as with his “Unfinished Business” apparel.

Number 24 has always been a 12th man and NFL favorite throughout his career whether it’s his love for Skittles or his witty responses to the media.

The Seahawks have been decimated by injuries at the running back position, with Chris Carson, Rashaad Penny, and CJ Prosise all out for the season.

Will Lynch return as the running back who averages 4.3 yards per game or will father time turn Beast Mode into Feast Mode for the defense?

The Seahawks have a chance to claim home-field advantage for the N-F-C playoffs with a win and losses by New Orleans and Green Bay.
