The defense is awesome.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, there’s that whole thing about scoring, and passing, and offense that the kids are all into, but think about it like this. Iowa is 2-1 – and was really close to being 3-0 – with 653 yards of total offense and 41 points in the three games.

Nebraska put up 575 yards and 42 points against Georgia Southern, lost, and look where it is now.

Fine, so the running game is bad, the passing attack is worse, and every game time the offense comes on the field the world becomes a sadder place. But the D …

Second in the nation in scoring defense behind Georgia, fourth in total defense, sixth in pass defense, and 15th against the run.

Rutgers cranked up 66 points against a Wagner team that’s down 24 getting up in the morning, but take that out, and it’s not like the Hawkeyes are dealing with a high-power attack here.

Why Rutgers Will Win

The defense is awesome.

It might not be working quite at Iowa’s level, but it’s second in the nation against the run – it allowed 97 yards and 1.1 yards per carry so far – the pass rush is strong, and the secondary is good enough to keep a putrid Iowa passing attack from suddenly finding itself in Piscataway.

3-0 doesn’t care where 3-0 came from. The Scarlet Knights are winning on defense, turnover margin, and taking advantage of just about every opportunity. The team is more than happy – and capable – of playing Iowa’s style of game and doing it better.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be gripping.

Both defenses will take center stage, both punting games are good – the field position battle should be even – and neither team will take any big chances. Here’s the difference.

Rutgers is a wee bit better offensively on third downs. Combine that with the lack of turnovers, and the Scarlet Knights will outconservative the Hawkeyes.

There will be plenty of chances for both sides to take over, but it’ll be Rutgers that does it at home.

The Owls got the first win in the Stan Drayton era, and now that they’re tuned up a bit following the 30-14 win over Lafayette.

The D has been fantastic so far on third downs – allowing just 16% of conversions over the first two games – and the O is working around a rotation of backs to find the right fit.

Rutgers needs an opponent that’s not going to come in and crank up massive numbers. That might not be a problem against a Boston College offense that was the worst in the ACC last season.

Part of the problem was an injured Phil Jurkovec who’s now back to direct the attack, but the Eagles aren’t going to run the ball behind a line that’s going to need some work.

Rutgers has its own issues, but the secondary might be one of its strengths. If the defensive back seven can rise up and make a slew of big plays, this will be close.

The Rutgers offense is going to be … lacking.

The line is a work in progress after losing key parts to the transfer portal, and the running game isn’t going to be anything special early on.

The Boston College defense is greater than the sum of its parts. The line might not live behind the line, but it’ll be able to hold up against the run in this, the secondary is coming off a tremendous year – the Eagles were third in the nation in pass defense – and it shouldn’t take too much to clamp down if the offense can provide any semblance of support.

Bowl don’t lie.

Rutgers isn’t going to win the national championship, and it’s not going to play for the Big Ten title anytime soon unless Ohio State leaves for the SEC and everyone else in the division quits playing college football.

So the goal right now is to get to a bowl game no matter what. If that means the program has to rely on past teams to have gone to class, so be it.

Rutgers caught a break last year by having the best Academic Progress Rate among teams with five wins, and that meant it got to go have the fun of the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl.

It was an ugly 38-10 loss to Wake Forest, but so what? Rutgers went to a bowl game, and that’s good enough.

The five wins last year were massive considering the program won a total of 13 games since the 8-5 run in 2014. Best of all, it was the best season in seven years even though the team couldn’t score and the defense couldn’t stop anyone from scoring.

Head coach Greg Schiano needed four seasons in his first run at Rutgers to get everything place to have a winning season. It’s still going to take work, but he made some changes in the coaching staff, went heavy in the transfer portal, and …

He got the team to a bowl game. It can be done at Rutgers.

Ohio State is going to be fantastic, and now it’s mad.

We got the Michigan curveball last year. It’s rebuilding, but it’s still going to be strong. Michigan State and Penn State are good, Wisconsin is really good, Iowa is Iowa, and others like Maryland and Nebraska should rise up and have good seasons.

Who can catch the Buckeyes?

More interesting will be a few strange twists and turns. Most of the solid teams can hang with or beat anyone else in the conference, and on the right day an Illinois or Northwestern or Rutgers should have the formula to pull off something fun.

There are two more years before USC and UCLA come aboard. That’s all anyone will be talking about, but until then, this season should be entertaining – at least outside of what OSU will probably do.

2022 Preseason CFN Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year

QB CJ Stroud, Soph. Ohio State

Try not to compare the 2022 Stroud to the 2021 version that put up astronomical numbers and would’ve won the Heisman in a walk if Ohio State got past Michigan and if Auburn’s Tank Bigsby had stayed in bounds late against Alabama.

Stroud rolled up over 4,400 yards with 44 touchdowns and six picks last year, hitting 72% of his passes along the way. He’s probably not going to do that again for one simple reason – he won’t have to. He had to keep bombing away at times with the Buckeye defense struggling to be its normal self.

As long as he keeps the completion percentage to around 70%, keeps the interceptions at a bare minimum, and hits his third down throws, he’ll be fine.

Of course, he’ll be better than fine, though.

2022 Preseason CFN Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jack Campbell, Sr. Iowa

The Iowa linebackers know how to tackle and tackle and tackle some more. Campbell and running mate Seth Benson should combine for over 250 tackles if everything goes right in what should be another big year for the Hawkeye D.

Campbell won’t be as disruptive as Wisconsin’s Nate Herbig, and he might not bring the value like several of the top linemen, but he’ll eat up everything again after leading the nation with 143 tackles with a fumble return for a score, two interceptions – taking one for a touchdown – and with 3.5 tackles for loss.
