Minnesota vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Minnesota is struggling.

Just when everyone jumped on board after a strong 4-0 start, the offense died because of running back injuries (that was the problem in the Purdue loss) and QB Tanner Morgan suffering a concussion (that wasn’t why the Gophers got rocked by Penn State, but it didn’t help).

All of a sudden, the running game has slowed to a crawl – even with the six yards per carry in the loss to Illinois – scoring has been a problem, and Rutgers is here for all of it.

The Scarlet Knights might have their own issues, but they’ve been a rock against the run outside of the Ohio State loss, they’re seventh in the nation overall defensively, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Minnesota Will Win

This is where the Minnesota defense has to step it up.

Purdue is good, Illinois is good, Penn State is good. The Gophers were banged up just as they had to deal with the three good teams on the slate so far – with some respect given to Michigan State – and lost because the O didn’t work. The D didn’t step up and help against the Illini and Nittany Lions, but the three takeaways against the Boilermakers kept it interesting.

The Rutgers offense is happy to give it away a few times, and last week when it didn’t give it away in the win over Indiana, it was still a struggle with just 305 yards.

This will be a grind of a game, but if the Minnesota front can stop the ground game and keep it to 140 yards, this won’t be a problem.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Rutgers is 4-0 when rushing for 140 yards and 0-3 when it doesn’t. Minnesota is 4-0 when allowing under 140 yards, and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Rutgers won’t gain 140 rushing yards. Minnesota is still banged up, but it’ll get it right the ship with a decent enough offensive balance to go along with a good day from the D.

Indiana vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

The Hoosiers aren’t playing that poorly even if they’re on a four-game losing streak.

They pushed Maryland hard in the 38-33 loss, the passing game is good, and the defense is just disruptive enough to get into the backfield on a regular basis. It won’t take much to make Rutgers press.

The Scarlet Knights don’t move the chains, they’re painfully inefficient throwing the ball, and they turn the ball over WAY too much.

They had plenty of chances to beat Nebraska, but bad penalties and three turnovers were too much to overcome in the 14-13 loss two weeks ago. They’re just not tight enough in all the other areas, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Rutgers Will Win

Indiana can be thrown on and Rutgers isn’t quite as bad as it seems throwing the ball, at least yardage-wise.

Evan Simon threw for 300 yards in the loss to Iowa, and he combined with Noah Vedral to throw for 233 yards against the Huskers. It was a tough run – they struggled to complete passes – but the yards were there. The passing game should hit 200 yards in this, too.

The defense has been terrific against the run – forget about the outlier loss to Ohio State – Indiana isn’t going to hit 50 yards, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Rutgers just doesn’t know how to score.

Only getting ten points against Ohio State and Iowa is no big deal – those two defenses are going to do that – but 13 against Nebraska wasn’t okay, and 16 against Temple was awful.

The Indiana defense has been hammered by just about everyone, but it also faced a slew of good offenses – yeah, let’s throw Nebraska in that bucket – and it’s not about to get lit up by this Scarlet Knight attack.

As long as IU doesn’t turn the ball over in bunches, it should be able to throw enough to get out with a win. With that said, if you think Rutgers will come up with three takeaways, assume this goes the other way.

Nebraska vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Yes, Nebraska was able to come up with a win over Indiana but it wasn’t able to run the ball.

It ripped off runs in chunks against North Dakota and Georgia Southern, but it couldn’t do anything against Oklahoma and was stuffed too often by the Hoosiers.

Rutgers got run over by Ohio State, but that’s Ohio State. Against everyone else the Scarlet Knight defensive front was a brick wall. Granted, it didn’t deal with anyone who could pound, but beating Boston College and holding up against Iowa wasn’t horrible.

Combine that with a strong secondary and lots of plays on third downs, and Nebraska will stall way too often.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers finally got to exhale a bit.

The pressure was off, they had too weeks to let everything calm down, and what did they do? They were able to win a tight game for once.

It was 21 all against Indiana in the fourth quarter, and everything was set up for yet another close loss when the team turned into Jell-O. Instead, Nebraska got a huge pass play and another scoring drive to win by 14.

Did that signal any sort of a change? Is it simply a case of the team needing to actually know it could do it?

That might be a bit of a reach, but the offense is moving the chains, there are plenty of big plays, and this week the defense gets a break against a Rutgers offense that’s struggling to find anything that works.

But …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Rutgers stop turning the ball over and go back to being the defense that takes it away in bunches?

It had to press against Iowa and Ohio State, and then bad things started to happen. Nebraska defense doesn’t take the ball away, and the offense has given it up multiple times in every game against Georgia Southern.

The Huskers will dominate the game in total yards, but time and again the Rutgers defense will hold firm and/or force a big mistake.

It won’t be anything pretty, but the Scarlet Knights will take it.

Ohio State vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

The Scarlet Knights have the style to keep the score low and the game reasonably close. They might have lost to Iowa 27-10, but they never let it get out of hand.

They’re still No. 2 in the nation against the run, they’re terrific at slowing things down to a dead stop, and they’re not giving up a slew of big plays.

No, the offense can’t keep up the pace if Ohio State gets moving, but Evan Simon was able to throw for 300 yards against Iowa. He’s going to rip it – even if he’s not all that accurate – and he has just enough ability to push the Buckeye secondary a bit.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Rutgers offensive line isn’t playing well enough.

Moore was under too much pressure, the running game didn’t have anywhere to move against Iowa, and now the Ohio State defensive front will have its chance to step up.

The Scarlet Knights have zero margin for error, but they turned it over three times against Iowa and haven’t been tight enough with penalties. For this to work, they have to take the ball away – like they did with three turnovers forced in the win over Boston College – and keep doing it.

Ohio State has only turned it over twice this year and has a grand total of four penalties in the last two games.

The offense is a machine. Nitpick all you want, but CJ Stroud is playing at the Heisman level everyone was expecting, the ground game has been amazing, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This will be over two drives in.

The Rutgers defense will come up with a few big plays to prevent total annihilation, but the offense won’t do enough to to prevent partial annihilation.

Ohio State won’t screw up enough to make this interesting.
