Michigan State vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Can Rutgers start taking the ball away again?

The program hasn’t been great at doing anything amazing under Greg Schiano over the last few years if it’s not forcing a bunch of takeaways. In 2000, the season opened with a stunning Scarlet Knight win thanks to three Spartan turnovers.

Start there – Rutgers has to at least win the turnover margin – and there have to be a few crazy scores coming from somewhere. The defense has been decent enough, it’s good at getting off the field, and the special teams have been fine.

But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Michigan State Will Win

Rutgers can’t score.

The team has yet to get past 24 against any FBS team and the 24-17 win over Indiana was like an explosion considering it’s been a grind to get past 13 points.

That’s a problem, and now the run defense is starting to crash. Playing Minnesota and Michigan had something to do with that, and Michigan State isn’t running well, but this is when the ground game needs to grind.

It’s the first time in a month the Spartans get to go against a mediocre run D, and they should be able to get past four yards per carry for the first time since the loss to Maryland in early October.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

With wins over Wisconsin and Illinois over the last three weeks, the Spartans are now have a real shot to save the season with a bowl bid. Win this, beat Indiana, and there’s something positive to build on going into the regular season finale against Penn State.

They’re not doing anything easy, but they’re still playing hard, they’re playing better, and they’ll pull this off after a rough first half.

Rutgers will go up early and stall.

Michigan State vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Rutgers might be plucky, but can it hang around on the boards and when the Spartans start to go off from three?

This isn’t a high-powered Scarlet Knight team. It doesn’t shoot enough threes, doesn’t make them when it takes them, and most offenses are able to crank up the outside scoring – Rutgers allowed ten or more threes in three of the last four games.

Michigan State has been great on the inside, it comes up with a ton of blocks, rebounds, and and it’s good to hit about 47% from the field. All that production inside means lots of big things happening outside.

When the Spartans make more than 35% from three they’re 13-0.

Why Rutgers Will Win

Michigan State has a turnover problem. It hasn’t been all that bad over the last few games, and it’s been better with the ball than it was earlier in the season, but it’s still good for giving the ball up around 14 times per game.

There’s that, there aren’t a lot of takeaways from the aggressive Spartan D, and too much of what makes everything go relies on the free throw line. The team is a lock for at least 14 points per game on the line, but Rutgers doesn’t get hit for a whole lot of fouls.

Play tough defense, don’t start hacking, and home Michigan State isn’t hot from the outside. And again …

What’s Going To Happen

The rebounds.

Michigan State has been a lock for over 30 getting off the bust – it only has fewer than 30 in three games this year – and Rutgers has to be able to hold up inside.

Rutgers doesn’t score enough to afford a slew of misses – it’s not going to get the offensive rebounds it needs to survive a close, tough battle.

There’s that, and despite all the free throws the Scarlet Knights came up with in the loss to Northwestern, the disparity on the line will matter.

Michigan State vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

The pass rush has been suffocating.

The Spartans are doing a whole slew of things right, but they’re hardly perfect. They’re able to make up for several problems by getting into the backfield on a regular basis with 18 sacks on the year and two or more in every game.

For all of the good things Rutgers is doing, the offensive line allows way too many plays behind the line for an offense that doesn’t have a whole lot of margin for error.

There isn’t much of a Scarlet Knight running game and the passing attack isn’t explosive enough to keep up if Michigan State can get out to an early start. But …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Rutgers Will Win

Michigan State’s secondary is getting hit hard.

To be fair, Bailey Zappe and the WKU offense bomb away on everyone, but Miami’s D’Eriq King was able to throw well, Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez came up with a good day, and even Northwestern was able to crank up the passing game in the second half.

This might not be a high-octane Rutgers passing game, but Noah Vedral hasn’t been bad yardage-wise, throwing for over 200 yards in two of the last three games.

But with Rutgers, it comes down to the mistakes. At least before the 52-13 loss last week to Ohio State, the team has been air tight with just one giveaway over the first four games before turning it over three times against the Buckeyes. This is still one of the nation’s top teams in fewest penalties, and …

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Scarlet Knights do that again?

It was the opener of the Greg Schiano era on one side, and the first game for Melvin Tucker on the other. Rutgers went to East Lansing and forced seven Michigan State takeaways in a stunning 38-27 win to kickoff the 2020 season.

Michigan State has only turned it over three times this season.

Under Tucker, the Spartans are now 7-1 when turning it over fewer than twice, and 0-4 when giving it up two or more times. Rutgers forced eight takeaways in the first two games and hasn’t come up with one over the last three.

As long as Michigan State is very, very careful, keeps things conservative, and manages to keep the Rutgers running game under wraps, it’ll be okay. It’ll be a grind, but the Spartans will be 6-0 for the first time since 2015.
