Kansas vs Oklahoma Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The offense can still work under Jason Bean.

Star quarterback Jalon Daniels injured his shoulder in the loss to TCU and is almost certainly out. However, it was Bean who was the starter for a bulk of last year – he knows what he’s doing.

The former North Texas starter led the Jayhawks in passing last season. He was the one – not Daniels – who almost pulled off the upset over the Sooners in the 35-23 loss, hitting 74% of his throws for 246 yards. Last week he stepped in against the Horned Frogs and threw for 262 yards and four scores.

In other words, nothing stops.

So what’s Oklahoma’s problem? The run defense is non-existent. allowing close to 300 yards per game over the three Big 12 losses. Bean will throw, but Kansas will start running and keep it going until the Sooner defensive front proves it can hold up.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Dillon Gabriel is expected to be back.

The Oklahoma starting quarterback suffered a concussion early on against TCU and everything fell apart from there.

No, he doesn’t play defense, and there are a whole slew of other problems happening, but the offense couldn’t make up for the problems on the other side in the second half against the Horned Frogs or at any point in the embarrassing 49-0 loss to Texas.

Texas will throw for more than 39 yards – that’s what the Sooners generated last week – against the Jayhawks.

The D won’t be able to hold up, but when Gabriel should be able to push for 300 yards and perk the O back to its previous form.

At least that’s the hope.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Oklahoma team that showed up and rolled against Nebraska find that groove again?

The defense couldn’t handle Kansas State’s Adrian Martinez on the ground, and TCU’s Max Duggan ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Can Bean take off and move?

He’s not Martinez or Duggan running the ball, but he’ll come up with positive yards. However, the OU defense will be a bit better, and getting Gabriel back should mean everything.

This is assuming Gabriel is back and good enough to be back to form. Kansas will keep the offense moving, but being back at home – and with a desperate sense of urgency – the Sooners will bounce back from the debacle in Dallas and get a win.

Texas vs Oklahoma Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

What’s going right after two straight ugly performances?

QB Dillon Gabriel is questionable at very, very best after suffering a concussion in the 55-24 loss to TCU, the defense couldn’t do anything right in the 41-34 loss to Kansas State, and …

The running game still works. It struggled against TCU – especially when Gabriel got knocked out – but overall the rotation of backs is working, the offensive line is doing a solid job, and it all has to click against a Texas defense that struggled against Alabama’s ground game but has been solid against everyone else.

The Longhorns aren’t taking the ball away – none in the last two games and just two on the year – the offense isn’t controlling the clock, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Texas Will Win

Is Quinn Ewers ready to go?

While Oklahoma is prepping backup quarterback Davis Beville and giving JUCO transfer General Booty practice time, Texas is hoping to get its No. 1 QB back after getting knocked out in the Alabama loss.

No matter who’s under center, the Longhorn offense will be about three things: Bijan, Bijan, and Bijan.

The Oklahoma defensive front can get behind the line, but it has been miserable against the run with Kansas State and TCU ripping off yards in huge chunks.

The quarterbacks did the most damage – Kansas State’s Adrian Martinez and TCU’s Max Duggan each ran at will – but the backs got involved, too, and now it’s Bijan Robinson time. He hit the 100-yard mark over each of the last three games, he’s averaging six yards per carry, and he’ll keep getting fed until OU proves it can stop him.

– Game Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This is one of those games that never, ever disappoints.

Texas looked like it was going to make a massive national statement as it ripped through Oklahoma in the first half of last year’s game, and then Caleb Williams stepped in and had other ideas in the 55-48 Sooner win.

OU survived the crazy 53-45 shootout in 2020, it pulled off a close win in 2019, Texas won in 2018 thanks to Cameron Dicker the freshman kicker, and on and on and on.

And sometimes weird things happen.

A mediocre 2015 Texas team handed a College Football Playoff-bound Oklahoma its only loss of the regular season.

The Sooners have owned the Red River Showdown lately, but these games are almost always close, there are always wild momentum swings, and they always play a huge role in the Big 12 title chase.

In this insane year in the conference with all ten teams good enough beat any of the other teams on the right day, this is even more of a must win than normal for two coaches who can’t lose this.

An Oklahoma win might show that the Brent Venables era really might be okay with a little bit of time, and a Texas win would settle that part of the base that’s not quite sold yet on Steve Sarkisian.

Oklahoma will make this close throughout with its best performance in a few weeks, but the problems at quarterback and leaky run defense will be too much to overcome.

Oklahoma vs TCU Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooner offense worked just fine against Kansas State.

The defense couldn’t figure out Adrian Martinez, but Dillon Gabriel and the offense cranked out 550 yards with great balance, tons of big plays, no mistakes, and 34 points, and it just wasn’t enough.

The O might not be the wild and crazy version it was under Lincoln Riley, but there aren’t any mistakes – just one turnover so far – the line has been solid, and the consistent production is there.

TCU doesn’t take the ball away – it’s not going to win the turnover margin battle here – and the secondary has been hit hard so far, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why TCU Will Win

Can Oklahoma’s defense stop solid, mobile quarterbacks? It sure couldn’t do it against Kansas State, and now it gets the combination of Max Duggan and Chandler Morris, who won’t start but is back after getting banged up.

The Horned Frogs have been able to ease their way into the season with two road wins over Colorado and SMU that seemed scarier before the season started, and now the team should be ready to go.

The passing game has been great so far – the quarterbacks combining to hit 76% of their passes – the defense is solid against the run, and like OU, the turnovers aren’t there with just one lost fumble in three games.

The O has the ability to keep surging and working with whatever pace is set, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The TCU defense didn’t have to work against Colorado or Tarleton State, and then SMU came out and threw well and made it close in a 42-34 Horned Frog win.

Oklahoma might have had a rough day against K-State, but it’s still great at generating pressure in the backfield, the run D shouldn’t get gouged this week, and in a fun back-and-forth fight, Gabriel and company should take over midway through the third.

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

What the heck was that?

Where was the Kansas State that dominated Missouri and looked like it was about to make a big run in the Big 12? That could still happen – it was a 17-10 loss to Tulane that obviously doesn’t matter in Big 12 play – and now the running game has to get working again.

The offense isn’t screwing up with just two turnovers and minimal penalties so far, the defense has been terrific on third downs – it’s third in the nation in passing efficiency defense – and overall the team is +5 in turnover margin.

Yes, Oklahoma has been great over the first three weeks, but it hasn’t actually played anyone with a pulse.

UTEP, Kent State, and yeah, Nebraska. Kansas State represents a massive step up in competition, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Oklahoma Will Win

What do you do against inferior competition? You drill them in easy games that get everything sharpened up for what’s coming.

Oklahoma has been close to flawless to start the Brent Venables era. It’s not the flashy team of the Lincoln Riley era, but the defense has been nasty and there hasn’t been a hint of drama so far.

One turnover. The Sooners lost a fumble against Nebraska, and like Kansas State, penalties aren’t an issue.

The pass rush and defensive front should be able to live in the Wildcat backfield, the run defense that’s allowing 2.8 yards per carry should be solid, and considering there’s little to no passing game to worry about, the secondary should be able to cheat up enough to make a difference.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State has a funky style that could make this interesting.

It’s not going to screw up, and it’s going to hold the ball for over 35 minutes. However, the OU defense is playing well, there’s absolutely no downfield passing attack coming from Martinez, and the balance of the Sooner offensive O should be too much to overcome.

Oklahoma vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Did Nebraska’s players suddenly get better at football?

Out of all the issues in the Scott Frost era, the inability to generate a massive talent upgrade turned out to be the biggest failing.

This is hardly a bad team – you don’t lose that many close games without having guys who can play – but it’s still going to come down to the little things.

How many turnovers has Nebraska booted in the three games so far? Five. It didn’t give up any in the loss to Georgia Southern, but it made up for it with ten penalties and one of the program’s worst defensive performances of all-time in Memorial Stadium.

Oklahoma might not come up with the 575 yards and 45 points the Eagles generated, but so far it’s been good enough offensively.

The O hasn’t exactly pushed the envelope, but the defense is getting the job done with two great performances against UTEP and Kent State teams that might not be any good, but can move the chains – at least the Golden Flashes can.

Oh, by the way, Oklahoma has a grand total of zero turnovers so far.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Nebraska Will Win

Maybe the players are there.

At least offensively, Nebraska does have a few nice playmakers, the ground game hasn’t been an issue over the last two games, and when Texas transfer Casey Thompson is in a groove, the offense will move.

The Huskers are converting 60% of their third down tries.

Fine, so the defense is a concern, but the Oklahoma ground game couldn’t get going in the 33-3 win over Kent State, coming up with third down conversions has been a problem, and there are unnoticed parts that are working.

The punting game has been fantastic, Anthony Grant is a solid running back to work around, and …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the defense.

It’s not like Oklahoma has gone totally conservative offensively under the new coaching staff, but it’s not taking any chances – partly because it hasn’t needed to so far.

It’s not going to have to do anything crazy in this, either.

The Huskers are giving it the old college try, but their secondary is getting picked clean, the offensive line isn’t generating a push, and the Oklahoma defensive line has been a terror in the backfield over the first two games.

Nebraska will come up humming in front of a jacked up crowd. Oklahoma will weather the storm, grind out two good first half scoring drives, and the defense will take care of the rest.

Oklahoma vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flashes have the offense to keep up.

The three turnovers hurt in the 45-20 loss to Washington, and there weren’t the bursts of explosion like there needed to be, but the attack has the upside to go fast and come up with points in chunks.

There’s a slight lookahead factor here with a trip to Nebraska coming up next for Oklahoma, and it’s going to be tested more defensively than it was in the 45-13 win over UTEP.

It was an easy win, but the secondary got dinked and dunked on a bit, the passing game was more about the big plays than the steady completions, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Oklahoma’s offense will get to stretch its legs a little bit.

UTEP wasn’t able to put up much resistance in the first quarter, but that D will look like the 2000 Baltimore Ravens compared to what Kent State is bringing to Norman.

The Golden Flashes try. They have guys who can move, they’ll get behind the line once in a while, but defense is something just to pass the time before the offense can try to do all of its fun stuff.

New OU QB Dillon Gabriel was fine, the running game was great, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This should be over after a few drives.

Kent State will put some points on the board and make things a wee bit more interesting than UTEP did, but Oklahoma’s offense will be balanced, the big plays will be there, and if it wants to put a monster number on the board, it will.

It’ll hold up in the fourth quarter, but the backups will still generate gashing runs.
