Oklahoma (14-9) vs Iowa State (2-21) Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Can Iowa State go the entire Big 12 season without a win?

It hasn’t won a game of any kind since before Christmas, but the team has played well at times with a good fight in a 77-72 loss to Baylor, it didn’t get annihilated in either game against Oklahoma, and in general, the team plays just well enough to not get embarrassed.

At least, most of the time.

The team has a good pace to see games within range, it hits everything on the free throw line, and it’s not bad a defending the three. But …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

You don’t go 2-21 without having a whole slew of issues.

The Cyclones don’t rebound well enough, they turn it over a whole lot, and consistent shooting has been a problem. They haven’t hit the 30% mark from three in any of the last three games or in five of the last seven.

One big run from the Sooners should be able to put this away. In the first two games against the Cyclones, OU didn’t shoot well from three and had a few issues getting that run, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The last win over Iowa State was the last win for Oklahoma, period – that was back on February 20th.

The Sooners really, really, really need a good performance after losing four straight, but it’s going to take a while to get there. Iowa State will be plucky and annoying for about 25 minutes, but the Sooners will finally wake up in time to pull away late to move on.

There’s not going to be anything pretty about it, but it’ll be a win.

Texas (15-7) vs Oklahoma (14-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

Oklahoma has lost its groove.

It was rolling right along and looking like a possible contender to at least finish in the top three in the Big 12, but the offense hasn’t been clutch, the defense couldn’t stop Oklahoma State in back-to-back losses, and now it’s on a three-game losing streak and in desperate need to catch a wee bit of a break.

Texas has been a bit flaky, but when it’s flaky-good, everything is falling, the threes are there, and the team has been playing well even with a loss to Texas Tech when the O went cold.

OU allowed Oklahoma State to hit close to half of its shots over the two-game stretch. Texas should be able to do that same with an extra pass or two getting it done – the team has hit 49% or better from the field in six of its last ten games.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

When Texas is on, it’s great from the field. It doesn’t have turnover problems, it’s moving the ball around well, and it’s good enough from three to open everything up.

When Texas is off, it’s like pulling teeth. The team was able to beat Kansas even when nothing was falling from three, but it was off in the first meeting with OU and lost 80-79.

For all of the Sooners’ problems, it’s shooting relatively well. They haven’t been great on the boards, but they’re not turning the ball over and they were right in there in the three losses.

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma will pull up out of the nosedive by cranking up the defense a bit.

Oklahoma State’s offense was terrific in the two wins over OU, but before that, teams were having a hard time hitting from three. The Sooners will keep Texas to under 30% from the outside, but will struggle just enough on the boards to keep from pulling away.

Expect this to come down to the last few possessions.

Oklahoma (14-7) vs Oklahoma State (16-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners did just about everything right but play defense in the 94-90 overtime loss to the Cowboys on Saturday in Norman.

They’re not great at defending the three, but they couldn’t come up with key stops from anywhere. The difference was on the free throw line, and that’s a bit of an aberration.

OU doesn’t foul all that much – it leads the Big 12 in fewest fouls per game – but Oklahoma State got six more free throw attempts and hit nine more. As long as the Sooners can make 49% from the field and 44% from three again, the other parts will work out.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Can Cade Cunningham stay that hot? He might have only hit 3-of-8 from three, but he was a given on the free throw line and he kept on rolling on the way to 40 points in the win.

Yeah, the Cowboys got roasted from three – Oklahoma hit 10-of-23 – but the D is usually a whole lot better than that from the outside. It was the first time since the loss to TCU back in mid-December that OSU had that many problems.

It’s been able to do a great job of getting to the free throw line lately, Cunningham has been fantastic with 20 points or more in four of the last five games and 18 or more in eight of the last nine, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Sooners need a big performance.

They lost the firefight a few days ago, they lost in a clunker to Kansas State earlier in the week, and they need to ramp up the defensive intensity and production while snapping out of their finishing kick mini-funk.

It starts by doing a better job on the boards after getting hammered by the Cowboys – there can’t be 13 OSU offensive boards again.

And there won’t be.

It’ll be another close, fun game, but this time the Sooners will get just enough of a break the other way to pull out the close battle.

Oklahoma State (15-6) vs Oklahoma (14-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys have been hot for the last few weeks with a controlled, measured style with a strong defense from three, plenty of steals and blocked shots, and keeping every game in range.

Oklahoma is coming off a clunker against a Kansas State that’s also good at keeping scores low and the tempo down, but doesn’t have the talent of OSU and isn’t nearly as strong. The Sooners are struggling in a big way from three, but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooner defense isn’t bad at guarding from the outside, too.

No one has hit 30% from three in the last three games, and they were all on the road. OU is finally back in Lloyd Noble after being away since February 6th – it hasn’t lost at home in 2021.

No, the team isn’t shooting all that well and it’s not moving it around as well as it should, but again, Oklahoma State isn’t going to crank up the offense and make this a wild scoring game.

So in what should be a relatively close, low scoring game like this …

What’s Going To Happen

It should come down to turnovers. Oklahoma State gives the ball away way too often, and Oklahoma doesn’t.

The Sooners lead the Big 12 in fewest turnovers, and Oklahoma State is as bad as any team in the conference at screwing up. For an OU team that doesn’t shoot well from the outside, manufacturing points from the defense will matter.

Oklahoma (13-5) vs Iowa State (2-15) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Iowa State doesn’t score.

It doesn’t generate enough free throws to score that way – even though it makes them when it takes them. It doesn’t hit enough from three, generate enough rebounds to come up with second chance points, and it doesn’t come up with enough defensive big plays to get points in transition.

It hasn’t scored 60 points in either of the last two games and struggles to put into the 70s. It was able to get to 72 points in the first meeting with the Sooners and still lost by seven. But …

Why Iowa State Will Win

That first loss to the Sooners was on the road and that’s when the threes were dropping. The Cyclones had their best outside shooting game of the season because the defense had one of its worst days of the year.

Can they keep OU from getting on the move and making more than half of its shots?

When the Sooners aren’t on, they lose. They’ve lost their last three games when not making 40% from the field, and Iowa State – as bad as the D is – has been able to hold Kansas and TCU to under 40% in the last four games.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State will be plucky at home – just the second home date in the last six games – but the scoring just won’t be there for a full 40 minutes to pull this off.

Oklahoma might need a little while to get going after not playing for a week, but it’ll get rolling in the second half.

Texas (13-5) vs Oklahoma (13-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

Texas keep on shooting well but it needs a bit more of a break.

On fire hitting half of its shots or more in three of the last six games – and 49% against TCU – the Longhorns are making things happen on the move and they’re generating enough rebounds to come up with second chance points.

Can there be a few more threes? Texas only hit six of 25 in the first meeting with OU – an 80-79 Sooner win – but the defense was able to do its part from the outside.

Texas plays the best three-point D in the Big 12, it owns the glass, and now it just needs to be a wee bit hotter than it was back in Norman in late January.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners just don’t make enough mistakes.

They don’t commit enough fouls to give up a ton of free throws – but when they do, there’s a problem – and they don’t give the ball away for easy points. They were +3 in turnover margin in the first meeting and shot 15 more free throws.

Unlike Texas – who’s been shooting well but it doesn’t translate into wins – Oklahoma wins when it shoots well and loses when it doesn’t. Over the last 15 games, it’s 11-1 when making 40% or more from the field, and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

The Texas defense hasn’t allowed 40% from the field in two of its last three games, but it’s allowing almost 41% overall on the season.

Can the Longhorns rise up and pull this off at home? It’ll be another fun game between the two, but once again, the Sooners will do a bit more on the line and will be a bit more careful with the ball in a tight win.

Oklahoma (12-5) vs West Virginia (14-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners were able to win the first time back in early January even though they didn’t shoot well and made a whole lot of mistakes. So how did they do it? They did just enough right to get by 75-71.

They did a wee bit more on the free throw line, they did a wee bit more on the glass, and they did a wee bit more from the field, even though the Mountaineers were great from three.

They have to repeat the performance.

West Virginia is terrific on the boards, and OU has to at least keep things even. The Mountaineers are also outstanding at bringing the pressure and forcing mistakes for easy baskets, and the Sooners just don’t turn the ball over often enough. However …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Oklahoma’s three point defense is awful.

West Virginia lost in the first meeting despite going lights out from three, and it might be able to do that again against a defense that has been good at times at getting out and making a stop, but is also coming off a rough defensive day in the win over Iowa State.

At home, WVU needs to reverse the first game by doing its part to own the glass – it was -6 in rebounding margin the first time – and the defense has to keep the Sooners from generating easy points. OU jacked up a season-high 35 threes in that game, and that’s fine – WVU just needs to clean up the misses.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Baylor’s Big 12, but this is the battle for the No. 2 spot – for the moment.

The Mountaineers have won their last five Big 12 games, but they’re not necessarily a rock at home. They’ll be a bit better defensively in this – they’ll win the outside game – and they’ll be a bit tougher on the boards late to survive a fun back-and-forth battle.

Oklahoma Football Schedule Analysis: It’s going to be a fun start, but nothing all that bad that can’t be handled with relative ease. Beating Tulane and Western Carolina have to be easy, and the fun of Nebraska coming to town could go away fast if the former Big 8/Big 12 rival remains as mediocre as it’s been over the last several years.

There’s only one game in Norman, though, over the first four Big 12 games – that’s a bit misleading. The Texas game is obviously in Dallas, and the last road date is at Kansas. Two of the last four games are on the road, too, but there’s a week off in there, Iowa State is a home game, and OU only leaves the great state of Oklahoma once after October 23rd.

Oklahoma Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: The Sooners rip though this thing without breathing all that hard.

Of course that’s not how this is going to work, but there isn’t a problem with the non-conference schedule, the Sooners take care of Texas, and they roll through Iowa State and Oklahoma State in the final two games on the way to yet another Big 12 Championship appearance.

Oklahoma Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: Something goes wrong with a brain-cramp loss at Kansas State, and the College Football Playoff dreams go bye-bye early for the second year in a row with a loss to Texas.

There’s another loss or two along the way to not only miss out on the CFP, but dropping a few games – like against Iowa State, at Oklahoma State, or to TCU – make it the rare year without going to the Big 12 title game.
