Oklahoma vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Just when it seemed like the Sooners were back on track and going to make a big statement in the finishing kick, it made way too many mistakes in the 38-35 loss to Baylor.

However, beyond all the turnovers and penalties, the team was balanced offensively, the ground game was great – RB Eric Gray has been fantastic – and now the defense catches a break.

The problem against Baylor was the run defense. The problem against everyone is the run defense.

Oklahoma is 0-4 when it allowed 275 rushing yards or more, and 5-0 when giving up 165 or fewer. West Virginia can run, but it only averages 161 yards per game. But …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia should be able to hammer away.

The defense might be struggling, the secondary is having problems, and the team has to make this a shootout. However, the ground attack is good enough to take over early and take the pressure off JT Daniels and a passing attack that should rise up at home.

The Mountaineers will make this a shootout. They were on the right side against Baylor, but couldn’t get past Kansas and TCU. This should be a back-and-forth fight with a little extra juice attached. A bowl game is still possible, but it would require winning the final three games against IU, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Mountaineer defense come up with enough turnovers?

West Virginia was only able to win one game so far when allowing over 300 yards, and that’s because it came up with three takeaways in the win over Baylor.

Oklahoma has had a turnover problem with multiple mistakes in three of the last four games, but it should be able to put up 500 yards.

The West Virginia D – even with the Baylor game – has only been able to come up with two or more turnovers twice and won’t be able to generate enough stops in this to pull it off.

West Virginia vs Oklahoma Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Oklahoma running game has been just okay – it hasn’t been good enough.

It was no coincidence that the Sooner O wasn’t what it should’ve been last year when the ground game didn’t roll. Rhamondre Stevenson was eligible, the ground attack took things up a few notches and the offense blew up.

Stevenson is now a New England Patriot, the Sooners didn’t hit the 200-yard mark against Tulane and Nebraska, and the O didn’t do everything it should. That’s not to say they couldn’t run – they averaged over five yards per carry against the Huskers – but overall the team with this much talent should be doing even more.

Combine that and the lack of downfield plays – OU is averaging just 10.7 yards per completion – and there’s a glitch.

West Virginia’s defensive front lives in the backfield, the run defense is allowing just 102 yards per game, and the D is the best in America in the red zone. However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma Will Win

West Virginia is one of the worst teams in the nation in turnover margin.

It lost to Maryland on four giveaways and a -4 turnover margin, and last week is almost ruined a terrific performance against Virginia Tech with two giveaways.

As good as the Mountaineer D is, it has just one takeaway. It’s going to take a whole lot more than that to get this done.

And yeah, the Oklahoma offense isn’t the unstoppable force it should be. It’s still fantastic, the yards are still there, the wins are still coming, and there aren’t mistakes.

There might not be a whole lot of risk, but there are rewards – the Sooners lead the Big 12 in turnover margin.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia has the experience, the defensive front and the ability to pull this off if it can just not be -2 or worse in turnover margin.

The defensive front will be effective and the offensive line will have a good game, but for OU, the steady production of the attack will be enough.

No, this might not be a perfect Sooner team, but it’s winning. It’ll be rocky, but the offense will come through when needed.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners were able to win the first time back in early January even though they didn’t shoot well and made a whole lot of mistakes. So how did they do it? They did just enough right to get by 75-71.

They did a wee bit more on the free throw line, they did a wee bit more on the glass, and they did a wee bit more from the field, even though the Mountaineers were great from three.

They have to repeat the performance.

West Virginia is terrific on the boards, and OU has to at least keep things even. The Mountaineers are also outstanding at bringing the pressure and forcing mistakes for easy baskets, and the Sooners just don’t turn the ball over often enough. However …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Oklahoma’s three point defense is awful.

West Virginia lost in the first meeting despite going lights out from three, and it might be able to do that again against a defense that has been good at times at getting out and making a stop, but is also coming off a rough defensive day in the win over Iowa State.

At home, WVU needs to reverse the first game by doing its part to own the glass – it was -6 in rebounding margin the first time – and the defense has to keep the Sooners from generating easy points. OU jacked up a season-high 35 threes in that game, and that’s fine – WVU just needs to clean up the misses.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Baylor’s Big 12, but this is the battle for the No. 2 spot – for the moment.

The Mountaineers have won their last five Big 12 games, but they’re not necessarily a rock at home. They’ll be a bit better defensively in this – they’ll win the outside game – and they’ll be a bit tougher on the boards late to survive a fun back-and-forth battle.

Oklahoma vs West Virginia canceled, Big 12 championship set

Saturday’s matchup between Oklahoma and West Virginia has been canceled due to COVID-19. The two schools will not play this season.

Saturday’s matchup between Oklahoma and West Virginia has been canceled due to COVID-19 within the Mountaineer program. Originally scheduled to play on Nov. 14, this is the second time the coronavirus has affected the game.

West Virginia’s entire football program will be shutting down until Dec. 17. Per SoonerScoop.com, Oklahoma will not attempt to find an opponent to play on Saturday. Dec. 19 is the final regular-season date across all of college football.

Since the Sooners are off to AT&T Stadium to play Iowa State in the Big 12 championship, the two schools will not play each other this season.  This is the first time West Virginia will not play Oklahoma since they joined the conference in 2012.

Oklahoma will finish the season with a 7-2 record. If the game against Baylor on Dec. 5 had not happened, Lincoln Riley’s squad would not have been eligible for the Big 12 title with only eight games played.

Iowa State is the only thing in front of the Sooners winning their sixth straight conference championship. While neither team has a realistic shot at the College Football Playoff, a spot in a New Year’s Six bowl game will be up for grabs.
