Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Oklahoma defense has shown up.

It was expected to be as good a D as any in the Lincoln Riley era, but the secondary got torched way too easily in the middle of the season, there were too many lapses, and the run defense went bye-bye in the loss to Oklahoma State.

The glitch was fixed as the Sooners swarmed all over Breece Hall and Iowa State in last week’s win, it held down Texas Tech enough to get the victory, and now it gets an Oklahoma State team that would prefer to make this all about the D.

The offensive side still works, too. After stalling out against Baylor, Caleb Williams and company got the running game going against Iowa State – the team has hit 200 rushing yards or more in four of their last six games.

Yeah, the Oklahoma State defense is amazing, but it also hasn’t seen a team with any explosion like OU will bring.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense has shown up.

This year’s it’s been all about the defense, the defense, the defense, but the Cowboy attack has kicked it all in at just the right time with 400 yards or more in three of the last four games with 682 against TCU and 535 against Kansas.

The rushing attack has a slew of options, the passing game is steadily hitting 200 yards, and it’s all working in concert with a defense that’s been every bit as good as Georgia’s and Wisconsin’s.

The D pitched a perfect game against Texas Tech – allowing just 108 yards of offense in the 23-0 win – it’s No. 1 in the nation in third down stops, No. 1 in sacks and tackles for loss, No. 2 in scoring, and No. 3 in total defense.

Can Oklahoma handle being in a bit of a grind without the big, explosive plays it needs?

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Round One … maybe.

Oklahoma State is in the Big 12 Championship no matter what, and Oklahoma is in with a win. It’s also in with a win and a Baylor loss to Texas Tech – it’ll know what it needs to do with Baylor playing early in the day.

The Cowboy defense will give up two huge plays scoring plays – Williams won’t be that bad – but it won’t be enough.

The Sooner running game will be bottled up, the Oklahoma State offense will be balanced, and about two weeks behind reality, the world will start to realize that the Big 12 really might get a team into the College Football Playoff.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners did just about everything right but play defense in the 94-90 overtime loss to the Cowboys on Saturday in Norman.

They’re not great at defending the three, but they couldn’t come up with key stops from anywhere. The difference was on the free throw line, and that’s a bit of an aberration.

OU doesn’t foul all that much – it leads the Big 12 in fewest fouls per game – but Oklahoma State got six more free throw attempts and hit nine more. As long as the Sooners can make 49% from the field and 44% from three again, the other parts will work out.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Can Cade Cunningham stay that hot? He might have only hit 3-of-8 from three, but he was a given on the free throw line and he kept on rolling on the way to 40 points in the win.

Yeah, the Cowboys got roasted from three – Oklahoma hit 10-of-23 – but the D is usually a whole lot better than that from the outside. It was the first time since the loss to TCU back in mid-December that OSU had that many problems.

It’s been able to do a great job of getting to the free throw line lately, Cunningham has been fantastic with 20 points or more in four of the last five games and 18 or more in eight of the last nine, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Sooners need a big performance.

They lost the firefight a few days ago, they lost in a clunker to Kansas State earlier in the week, and they need to ramp up the defensive intensity and production while snapping out of their finishing kick mini-funk.

It starts by doing a better job on the boards after getting hammered by the Cowboys – there can’t be 13 OSU offensive boards again.

And there won’t be.

It’ll be another close, fun game, but this time the Sooners will get just enough of a break the other way to pull out the close battle.

Oklahoma State (15-6) vs Oklahoma (14-6) Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys have been hot for the last few weeks with a controlled, measured style with a strong defense from three, plenty of steals and blocked shots, and keeping every game in range.

Oklahoma is coming off a clunker against a Kansas State that’s also good at keeping scores low and the tempo down, but doesn’t have the talent of OSU and isn’t nearly as strong. The Sooners are struggling in a big way from three, but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooner defense isn’t bad at guarding from the outside, too.

No one has hit 30% from three in the last three games, and they were all on the road. OU is finally back in Lloyd Noble after being away since February 6th – it hasn’t lost at home in 2021.

No, the team isn’t shooting all that well and it’s not moving it around as well as it should, but again, Oklahoma State isn’t going to crank up the offense and make this a wild scoring game.

So in what should be a relatively close, low scoring game like this …

What’s Going To Happen

It should come down to turnovers. Oklahoma State gives the ball away way too often, and Oklahoma doesn’t.

The Sooners lead the Big 12 in fewest turnovers, and Oklahoma State is as bad as any team in the conference at screwing up. For an OU team that doesn’t shoot well from the outside, manufacturing points from the defense will matter.

Oklahoma (5-2) vs Oklahoma State (5-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The defense continues to get the job done.

You always have to grade Big 12 defenses on a bit of a curve, but the Cowboys are doing their part, especially against everyone’s passing game. There was a problem against West Virginia early in the season, but no one else has hit the 200-yard mark through the air against the Cowboy secondary.

The Cowboys are dominant defensively on third downs, the pass defense has only allowed more than one touchdown pass once, and even in the one game that the D allowed a ton of points – the 41 against Texas came in a variety of ways – it allowed fewer than 300 total yards.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The offense has found its groove.

It helps to play Texas Tech and Kansas over the last few weeks, but the team with the young starting quarterback needed the tune-ups.

Spencer Rattler might not be running like Kyler Murray or Jalen Hurts, and he’s still not close to being accurate enough, but he’s hitting on enough key plays now that he was missing earlier, and the running game is helping out with 200 yards or more in three of the last four games.

The O is the best in the Big 12 on third downs, the team owns the clock, and crazily enough for a program that was such a defensive nightmare not all that long ago, the run D has been dominant.

What’s Going To Happen

Which team wants to step up and be in the Big 12 Championship?

A loss for Oklahoma would be a knockout blow – for all intents and purposes – while an OSU defeat would be a massive issue with a loss to Texas a few weeks ago.

Oklahoma State’s defense is going to be a problem for Rattler.

He has been better, and he has the look of a future superstar, but he hasn’t been consistent enough. The OU offense has the pop and explosion to go on a run, but the Cowboys will make just enough good plays on third downs to keep things moving and make the Sooners press.

OSU will come up with the right offensive mix to go along with a strong defensive performance to pull off the first win in the Bedlam series since 2014.

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks and tips

The Oklahoma Sooners (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) and Oklahoma State Cowboys (8-3, 5-3) hook up at T. Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. at 8 p.m. ET for a little ‘Bedlam’. We analyze the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State: Three things you need to know

1. The Sooners are all set to face Baylor in the Big 12 Championship Game, win or lose in this one, but they’d like to top their rivals for a fifth straight season.

2. Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts needs 133 rushing yards to pass Jack Mildren (1,289 yards, 1971) for the most yardage by a quarterback on the ground.

3. Oklahoma State is just 19-87-2 in the previous 108 meetings between these rivals, and the Cowboys allowed 51.5 points per game (PPG) across the past four losses to the Sooners.

Prediction

Oklahoma 45, Oklahoma State 36

Moneyline (ML)

Oklahoma (-500) should be able to keep Oklahoma State (+375) RB Chuba Hubbard in check and take care of business; however, it’s bad betting business to risk five times the reward. Avoid the moneyline here.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered on an outright win for Oklahoma will return a profit of $2.00.

Against the Spread (ATS)

OKLAHOMA STATE (+12.5, -110) is worth taking with the points at home. Oklahoma (-12.5, -110) has been sloppy defensively, and this is a lot of points to be laying on the road in a rivalry game. Hubbard is an explosive player for the Cowboys, and he is one of a handful of skilled stars for OSU. Unfortunately, they are forced to make due without WR Tylan Wallace, who is done for the season.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 68.5 (-115) is a great play, to me, on paper. Sure, the upper 60’s seems like a lot, but the Sooners haven’t been able to stop anybody lately, allowing 24 or more points in four straight (all non-covers). That includes 41 against Iowa State in a narrow win Nov. 9, and 48 at Kansas State in a loss. Look for this one to go well over the number.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

This team has another gear when it’s time to turn it on.

It might not be all that consistently great lately, but thanks to Jalen Hurts, the offense is getting just enough to keep coming up with wins.

How brilliant has he been?

He’s not going to throw for the yards and touchdowns that Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield did during their respective Heisman-winning seasons, but he’s been more efficient than those two. Throw in the 1,156 yards and 17 scores, and he’s carrying a team that’s been in fight after fight after fight.

The Oklahoma State secondary hasn’t been all that miserable considering the years it’s been allowing – it had three straight games of three picks before not coming up with one against West Virginia – but it can be hit for the big plays when the receivers are on the move. That’s what Oklahoma does.

Sam Ehlinger, Brock Purdy, Charlie Brewer – they were able to blast away, and now it’ll be Hurts’ turn at bat.

Oklahoma’s offense leads the nation averaging 575 yards per game, and Oklahoma State doesn’t have its starting quarterback. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Dru Brown was good enough.

With Spencer Sanders out for the year, former Hawaii transfer Dru Brown stepped into the starting quarterback gig and hit 76% of his throws for almost 200 yards with two touchdowns. He might not have provided the rushing element that Sanders does, but that’s what Chuba Hubbard is for.

The nation’s leading rusher has been slowed down a wee bit – he was held without a touchdown run for the first time all year in last week’s win over West Virginia – but he still produced a 100-yard game when the Mountaineers forced Brown to try winning the game.

The key will be the other side of the ball, where Oklahoma State’s run defense has all of sudden become a force.

The stats are skewed because teams bomb away on the Cowboy secondary, but after a rough first part of the year with Baylor, Texas, and Oregon State able to rip off rushing yards in chunks, OSU’s D has held three of the last four teams to under 90 yards on the ground.

When teams are trying to run now, it’s not working. The Cowboys should do just enough to keep Hurts from going off when he gets an opening.

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma has won four straight and five of the last six in the Bedlam fun, but once in a while, Oklahoma State is able to screw things up.

It might seem like a million years ago now, but a bad 2001 OSU team handed  the 10-1 Sooners a shocking 16-13 loss. The year after when 10-1 OU needed the win to stay in the national title hunt, it lost in Stillwater 38-28, and …

Really? 2001? Most of the players in this year’s game were barely born then.

The 2011 powerhouse Cowboy team destroyed the Sooners, and Tyreek Hill broke Sooner hearts with a punt return for a score in the final moments of a 38-35 win in 2014, and …

In a long-winded way, let’s just say Oklahoma State, as a program, is due.

Oklahoma has been playing with fire way too often.

It’s been able to survive three straight close games – beating Iowa State, Baylor and TCU by a combined eight points – but the turnover problem will be a killer in Stillwater.

The Sooners are -10 in turnover margin over the last seven games, they’ll be a -2 in this one, and that will be just enough of a difference in a back-and-forth fight that comes down to one final drive that comes up just short.

(It’s been the call for almost ten months, and there’s no backing off now … ) Oklahoma State will ruin Oklahoma’s College Football Playoff dream.
