The streak reaches three, Notre Dame Baseball takes game 1 against Wake Forest

The Irish are streaking again, one hits three games

The streaks for this years Irish baseball team have been odd to say the least. Aside from the first series of the year, Link Jarrett’s team has either won multiple games in-a-row or lost them in the same fashion.

After a terrible road series at Duke, where the Irish lost each game, they turned around and won their two mid-week home games before Wake Forest came to South Bend. The Irish’s streaky ways continued, as they defeated the Demon Deacons 8-3 on Friday night, extending their winning streak to 3-games, while improving their overall record to 24-8. They moved to two-games over .500 in ACC play as well, with a 9-7 record in conference.

Ace John Michael Bertrand was great again, as he allowed just five hits and one walk, two runs with one earned. He stuck out four before giving way to Alex Rao, allowed a run in 2.1 innings, and Jackson Dennies who finished off Wake.

Offensively Jack Zyska led the way with three hits, an RBI and two runs. David LaManna also scored twice while Jack Brannigan drove in two.

The series continues this afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium at 2pm EST, and if you on campus for the Blue vs. Gold game, head on over after and check out the Irish baseball team.

Notre Dame Baseball looks to break ACC losing streak as they host Wake Forest

The series begins tonight against the Demon Deacons

The Irish have been hot and cold against ACC opponents this year, something that has been very frustrating for head coach Link Jarrett. Although Notre Dame enters the series against visiting Wake Forest with a 23-8 record, they are just 8-7 in conference play.

Every ACC series has either been swept by the Irish or the Irish have been swept. Notre Dame is coming off a three game sweep after they visited Duke, but they broke the losing streak with a mid-week wins against Valparaiso and Purdue Fort Wayne.

The three game set will begin Friday night at 5pm EST with ace John Michael Bertrand on the mound. Austin Temple is scheduled to start game two with the game three starter yet to be announced.

Good news for the Irish is that since Jarrett took over, they’ve been a sparkling 25-7 at home. They’re third overall in fielding percentage in all of the NCAA, while being seventh in WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). The ERA is tenth nationally and second in the ACC at 3.40.

All three games are set to be played at Frank Eck Stadium and will be broadcasted on the ACC Network.

ESPN gets it right, has Notre Dame on their Way Too Early Top 10

The Irish weren’t left off this list

Earlier this week we were all in a bit of shock, as Pro Football Focus’ Anthony Treash left Notre Dame off his Way Too Early Top 10 list. It obviously caused some concern, but since the start of the regular season is months away, not really much at all.

ESPN released their Way Too Early Top 25 (insider), a bit more comprehensive look at this coming seasons top teams. Mark Schlabach was much more kind to the Irish, ranking them inside his Top 10. Find out below where Notre Dame was placed along with the rest of the early Top 10.

The culmination of the spring football season is upon us, the Blue and Gold game is set to be on our screens and for some of us, in the stands of Notre Dame Stadium. For the most part all the work these players have put in has been behind the scenes, but now, they emerge from the shadows of Irish Athletic Complex and give us a sneak peak of what’s to come this fall. Here are five outcomes we’d love to see come out of the spring.

Five-star Notre Dame quarterback target sets visit to PAC-10 program

Things are heating up for the five-star

The Irish are looking for their quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class and have their eyes set on one that resides just north of South Bend. Michigan five-star quarterback Dante Moore is the signal caller Marcus Freeman has set his sights on.

Over a year ago Freeman and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees offered a scholarship to Moore and he is coming off a visit to campus last month that by all accounts, went very well. Not well enough for Moore to shut down the process however, as he is set to visit Oregon next weekend, April 29th through May 1st according to a report from 247Sports Allen Trieu.

The Irish, along with LSU, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon are considered some of the schools to be in the running for Moore’s signature.

Lou Somogyi Memorial Scholarship established in memory of writer

Lou Somogyi’s name will carry on in a meaningful way.

The Notre Dame writing community was shaken last weekend by the sudden loss of longtime Blue & Gold contributor Lou Somogyi. However, efforts to keep Somogyi’s legacy alive already are underway. Coman, the publisher of Blue and Gold, has announced the establishment of The Lou Somogyi Memorial Scholarship. Donations will be accepted beginning Thursday.

Somogyi, who was from South Bend, took the Rudy Ruettiger route of transferring to Notre Dame from Holy Cross. Appropriately, South Bend natives who transfer from the smaller school to the big school will be given first priority for this scholarship. Next priority will be given to any other student who transfers from Holy Cross to Notre Dame. Finally, any Notre Dame student in financial need will be considered.

Somogyi may be gone, but this scholarship ensures he will remain an integral part of the university community. It’s the least that could happen after all of the lives he touched during his longtime association with Notre Dame.

Notre Dame moves back to the top spot in recruiting rankings

That didn’t take long

The Irish’s fall from the top overall ranking in the 2023 recruiting class did not last very long. After the decommitment of cornerback Justyn Rhett of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada over the weekend, Notre Dame’s grasp as the best recruiting haul was over.

It did not take long for the Irish to regain that stop, as this evening Texas wide receiver Braylon James verbally committed to Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. The six-foot-two-inch and 185-pound pass catcher is widely considered one of the best prospects in the country regardless of position and his verbal jumped the Irish back ahead of the pack according to the 247Sports 2023 recruiting class calculator.

The Irish jumped Texas Tech, who had overtaken them over the weekend, and regained the number one ranking. What’s impressive however are the number of recruits, the Red Raiders having fifteen commits to the Irish’s nine. Quality over quantity, as Notre Dame once again has the best recruiting class in the 2023 class as of today.

Notre Dame nowhere to be found in PFF’s Way Too Early Top 10

This has got to be wrong, right?

The Irish are coming off a very successful 2021 even though they are still going through a “coaching” change but Pro Football Focus’ Anthony Treash is not giving them the benefit of the doubt. In his Way Too Early Top 10, Treash fails to include the Irish, instead having schools like Utah and Wake Forest ranked ahead of them.

It seems like Treash completely missed on this list, as many view Notre Dame as not only a Top 10 school, but one of the few that will contend for a College Football Playoff spot when the season turns to December. There’s no real argument to his omission, Treash clearly has overlooked the Irish.

While it would be difficult to have Notre Dame among the Top 5, not having them inside the Top 10 is a massive mistake. Where do you believe the Irish should be ranked?

Notre Dame loses a 2023 commitment while visiting SEC power

It wasn’t meant to be

In early December of last year, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman star cornerback Justyn Rhett verbally committed to Notre Dame, picking the Irish over Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Oklahoma. For the next four plus months, it looked like the Irish had a commitment from one of the best defensive backs in the country.

Unfortunately, Rhett had continued to have conversations with other schools and this past weekend took an official visit to Georgia for their spring game. Prior to that trip, Rhett made a decision that many Notre Dame fans did not want to see, he decommitted from the 2023 recruiting class.

Although Rhett has been quite on his social media account, multiple outlets have confirmed the unfortunate news. The 2023 Notre Dame recruiting class now has eight total commits, however the group is no longer the top ranked class in the country according to multiple outlets.
