ESPN gets it right, has Notre Dame on their Way Too Early Top 10

The Irish weren’t left off this list

Earlier this week we were all in a bit of shock, as Pro Football Focus’ Anthony Treash left Notre Dame off his Way Too Early Top 10 list. It obviously caused some concern, but since the start of the regular season is months away, not really much at all.

ESPN released their Way Too Early Top 25 (insider), a bit more comprehensive look at this coming seasons top teams. Mark Schlabach was much more kind to the Irish, ranking them inside his Top 10. Find out below where Notre Dame was placed along with the rest of the early Top 10.

Notre Dame nowhere to be found in PFF’s Way Too Early Top 10

This has got to be wrong, right?

The Irish are coming off a very successful 2021 even though they are still going through a “coaching” change but Pro Football Focus’ Anthony Treash is not giving them the benefit of the doubt. In his Way Too Early Top 10, Treash fails to include the Irish, instead having schools like Utah and Wake Forest ranked ahead of them.

It seems like Treash completely missed on this list, as many view Notre Dame as not only a Top 10 school, but one of the few that will contend for a College Football Playoff spot when the season turns to December. There’s no real argument to his omission, Treash clearly has overlooked the Irish.

While it would be difficult to have Notre Dame among the Top 5, not having them inside the Top 10 is a massive mistake. Where do you believe the Irish should be ranked?

PFF names Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz as top breakout quarterback candidate in 2021

PFF names Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz as a top breakout quarterback heading into the 2021 season:

On Wednesday, Pro Football Focus analyst Anthony Treash released the top quarterbacks who he expects to have a breakout season in 2021.

Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz was named as a top breakout candidate by Treash after his explosive five-touchdown performance against the Illinois Fighting Illini in the 2020 season opener. Mertz was not the lone representative of the Big Ten, as Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa was also listed by Treash.

If being included by PFF is not enough of an indication of expectations for Graham Mertz entering his second year as a starter, he has already been named to the watch lists for both the Davey O’Brien and Manning awards.

ESPN names Notre Dame’s weakness in securing a CFP spot

ESPN’s Anthony Treash looked at each of the College Football Playoff contenders potential weakness and Notre Dame’s (Ian Book) was fairly obvious.

The Irish are squarely in the mix for a College Football Playoff spot right now, ranked No. 4 in both the Amway Coaches Poll and the AP Poll heading into this weekends games. With that in mind, ESPN took a look a the potential weakness for each CFP contender (Insider article).

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Anthony Treash identified quarterback as the weakness for Notre Dame, specifically Ian Book. The numbers Treash looked at didn’t paint a very good picture for the senior signal caller. So far this year Book has amassed a 59.0 passing grade from Pro Football Focus, which puts him in the lower third of all NCAA quarterbacks.

More concerning is the fact that Book “has produced more turnover-worthy plays than big-time throws and ranks in the bottom five in the ACC in both negatively graded and positively graded throw rate.” Yuck.

The level of concern for Treash is high as he points out that “even with a great defense, it isn’t likely Notre Dame beats Clemson this year with Book playing the way he is.” Hate to agree with him, but it is true. Book needs to play at a much higher level in order for the Irish to knock-off big, bad Clemson.

With Book being a 5th-year senior, we all know what he is, there likely aren’t any surprises in his game that will manifest over the next two weeks as the Irish prepare to face the Tigers. Hopefully, the defense continues their stellar performances and Book can make a few plays for Notre Dame to give them a fighting chance at an upset over Clemson keeping their CFP hopes alive.
