The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Our favorite draft picks (mostly) outside the first round

In this week’s “Xs and Os,” Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar get into their favorite draft picks (mostly) outside of the first round.

Now that the 2024 NFL draft is in the books, which players who were not selected in the first round have the best chances to make real impacts on their new NFL teams? In this episode of “The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell,” Greg and Doug Farrar get into their favorite guys mostly outside of the first round.

Ricky Pearsall, WR, San Francisco 49ers — We’re cheating a bit here, as Pearsall was selected with the 31st overall pick, but if the 49ers keep both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk on the roster, Pearsall can impact the passing game in ways that his new teammates will find complementary, and in ways that bring new colors to Kyle Shanahan’s playbook. Also, watch out for fourth-round receiver Jacob Cowing from Arizona as a smaller speed element.

Renardo Green, CB, San Francisco 49ers — On the defensive side, and with the 64th overall pick in the second round, the 49ers got a cornerback who showed all the athleticism and coverage skills you want at the position, and brings an absolute dawg mentality. You need look no further than Green’s tape against LSU’s Malik Nabers.

Marshawn Kneeland, DL, Dallas Cowboys — The Cowboys’ scouting staff is one of the NFL’s best, and with the 56th overall pick in the second round, Dallas picked up the Western Michigan and Senior Bowl star, who brings Khalil Mack to mind with his power-based rush, and Za’Darius Smith to mind with his effective gap versatility.

Malik Washington, WR, Miami Dolphins — Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but the Dolphins got a receiver who’s really fast in some really interesting ways. Washington, the Virginia receiver who Miami stole with the 184th overall pick in the sixth round, brings an exciting, physical style that puts defenses in severe conflict when those defenses also have to deal with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Cole Bishop, S, Buffalo Bills — The Bills’ former secondary got old overnight, and a re-do is now necessary. Bishop, the Utah star, is a prefect safety with which to rebuild because he can do just about everything at a high level.

Adonai Mitchell, WR, Indianapolis Colts — Mitchell showed at Texas that he has first-round talent, and if he can put it together with the nuances of the position, he’ll give the Colts the alpha receiver that seems to be the only thing this offense was missing. Not bad for the 52nd overall pick in the second round.

Jalen McMillan, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — McMillan may have been the lost member of the Washington receiver group from a production standpoint due to injury in 2023 (which is how the Bucs were able to get him with the 92nd overall pick in the third round), but the tape shows a valuable deep receiver who can expertly dice zone coverage downfield.

Trey Benson, RB, Arizona Cardinals — At Florida State, Benson showed the ability to run with power like a bigger man, and to evade tackles with the agility of a smaller back. The Cardinals selected Benson with the 66th overall pick in the third round, and they’ll likely avail themselves of Benson’s special skill set sooner than later.

Bub Means, WR, New Orleans Saints — At Pitt, Means displayed the ability to be a fantastic deep receiver despite a trio of quarterbacks who really struggled to do anything. Odds are, the Saints got a receiver with the 170th pick in the fifth round who can be even better in the NFL — all he needs is functional quarterback play to turn it loose.

Former Bills WR Zay Jones released by Jaguars

Former #Bills WR Zay Jones released by Jaguars:

The Jacksonville Jaguars have released veteran wide receiver Zay Jones.

Jones, 29, signed a three-year contract with the Jaguars before the 2022 season. His release saved the Jags about $4.2 million against the salary cap but also created a dead-money hit of more than $6.5 million, according to Jaguars Wire.

Jones was selected by the Buffalo Bills out of East Carolina with a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

Jones slowly came along during his career in Buffalo, eventually leading the Bills with 56 receptions for 652 yards and seven touchdowns in 2018.

After off-field issues, Buffalo traded Jones to then-Oakland Raiders, where he played for two-and-a-half seasons.

Because of his connections with the Bills, there could be a possibility he’s added to Buffalo’s receiving room. The Bills selected only one receiver in the 2024 NFL draft, landing Keon Coleman via a second-round pick.

Source: Courtland Sutton is unhappy with the Denver Broncos

The Broncos’ star receiver is unhappy, and either wants a new contract or traded out of Denver.

Trade rumors began running rampant on X late Monday afternoon when Bryant McFadden of CBS Sports posted that the Pittsburgh Steelers were closing in on a “significant playmaker.”

Many began speculating that said playmaker could be Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton. A source told Touchdown Wire that the Steelers, as well as the Los Angeles Rams, reached out to the Broncos about Sutton both before and during the NFL Draft- they were both turned down. There are plenty of connections with Sutton and the Steelers. He and quarterback Russell Wilson have a great relationship, and Sutton caught the most touchdowns in his career in 2023 (10) with Wilson as his quarterback.

New Steelers wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni was also Sutton’s wide receivers coach from 2018-22.

Amidst all the speculation, though, reports out of Denver are that the team and the star receiver are in good standing and that the team has no plans of trading him.

However, a source tells Touchdown Wire that Sutton and the Broncos are, in fact, not in good standing. The former Pro Bowl receiver wants a new contract, but the Broncos aren’t budging, citing the fact that Sutton still has two years left on his remaining deal. However, the Eagles just gave an extension to A.J. Brown, who had two years left on his deal.

Sutton opted not to report to the Broncos’ voluntary offseason program as he seeks a new deal. He only has $2 million in guaranteed money remaining on his current contract, and either wants a new contract from the Broncos, or he wants dealt to a team that will pay him and value him.

Sutton was a Pro Bowler in 2019.

Patrick Mahomes hands three Super Bowl rings to Logan Paul on WWE ‘RAW’

Patrick Mahomes made a cameo in WWE’s Monday Night RAW

WWE “RAW” was in Kansas City on Monday. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes decided to take in the show.

He also got involved by handing his three Super Bowl rings to Logan Paul.

The decision backfired when Paul drilled JD McDonagh. Paul then got on top of Jey Uso and got in some shots.

However, WWE strongman Braun Strowman came on the scene to help Uso.

Mahomes was lucky not only to have ringside seats but also to have brought linemen friends with him.

The decision almost backfired — in the storyline, of course, as Braun Strowman thought about taking revenge on the Chiefs’ three-time Super Bowl-winning QB.

A couple of Mahomes’ linemen stood up for their QB.

The contract news came on the same day his brother, Jason, the retired Philadelphia Eagles center, decided to join ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown.”

Between all his travels and socializing with Taylor Swift and Patrick Mahomes this offseason, it is a good thing Travis Kelce has an agent to do his financial wrangling.

Mahomes was thrilled.

Former Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce will be joining ESPN for a role on Monday NIght Countdown

Jason Kelce’s retirement won’t be official until June, but the former Eagles All-Pro center already has a new job lined up.

Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reports that Kelce is spurning the NFL Network and other platforms to join ESPN for a role on their pregame show, Monday Night Countdown.

Kelce, who just retired after what is considered a Hall of Fame career with the Philadelphia Eagles, was sought after by multiple networks, but is slated to land on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown.”

Value is an integral part of the draft process. Understanding the board is vital to judging how teams maximized value during the draft.

Establishing actual “value” on NFL draft prospects is incredibly difficult, with all 32 NFL teams having different schemes, cultures, and ideas of what elite talent looks like.

Arif Hasan of Wide Left Football creates the go-to consensus board, ranking the top 300 players in the draft class based on 101 big boards from draft analysts. As Hasan noted, “the consensus of these experts does a better predictive job than individual experts.”

Ex-Lions WR Quintez Cephus signs with the Bills after being reinstated from his gambling suspension

Former Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus has found a new NFL home. The ex-Lion has signed with the Buffalo Bills.

Terms of Cephus’s deal in Buffalo are not disclosed. He was recently reinstated from a one-year gambling suspension, one of four Lions players who were punished last offseason.

A 5th-round pick in 2020, Cephus caught 37 passes in two seasons in Detroit. He was expected to compete for a depth role in 2023 before he was suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s gambling policy.
