What’s Going To Happen

Boise State can’t lock down the Mountain Division with a win, but it won’t hurt.

It still has to get by Utah State on the road next week.

First, the Broncos get a light scrimmage in their final home game of the year – at least until, possibly, the Mountain West championship.

New Mexico has lost six straight, and the bad season got a whole lot worse after the tragic death of defensive lineman Nahje Flowers – the Lobos postponed their game with Air Force last week.

On the field, there’s no defensive hope against the Broncos. It’s been a bit of a struggle lately for a team with dreams of playing in the Cotton Bowl and now it’s time to have some fun with a massive offensive display that the Lobos won’t be able to slow down.

The Boise State defensive front will clamp down on the New Mexico running game, the team will be a +3 in turnover margin, and this will quickly turn into a light scrimmage on Senior Night.

FEI PROJECTION:  Boise State by 34.5

Well the UNM Lobos make the trip to Boise Idaho to battle the Broncos on the blue turf this Saturday in a classic David & Goliath matchup.

The No. 19 Broncos (8-1, 5-0 MWC) are the only team in the Mountain West Conference that has yet to lose a conference game. The Lobos (2-7, 0-5 MWC), meanwhile, are looking for their first conference win of the season.

Boise State is also in control of the first place in the MWC Moutain with a perfect 5-0 conference record and only three games left in the regular season.

The Broncos are perfect at home on the blue turf sporting a 5-0 record and climbed two posts to #19 this week AP’s top 25 rankings.

With the Lobos, its been a season filled with a heck of a lot of things that have happened at very bad times. From Bob Davie’s medical incident at the first game of the year in the locker room, the roller coaster of what quarterbacks would start each game, the suspension of quarterback Sherion Jones and then last week’s passing of defensive tackle Nahje Flowers.

There is no doubt to anyone who knows about this situation, this will be a very emotional game for Davie’s Lobos.

This is one of those games with a point spread of 28-30 points in favor of Bryan Harsin’s Broncos. At coach Harsin’s weekly press conference he noted that the Broncos would not take their opponent’s for granted and mentioned that the Lobos “do a lot of things really well”

“They’re team speed is one of the best that we play every single year,” he said. “We’ve been in some shootouts with New Mexico. Their record doesn’t necessarily show that but record doesn’t matter right now, not to us.”

So, what do the Lobos have to do to beat Boise State

1)  Win the war mentally before you arrive to actually play the game.

Most teams that have had a season like the Lobos, the emotional ups and downs create a fragile team in the sense of a belief they can win a big game against a big opponent.

Teams that have had this kind of adversity have to be so careful as things can get out of hand against big opponents very fast especially on the road against in a hostile environment.

The Lobos must win every down mentally believing they can win this game. This is where each player must just take care of his position and his responsibility from a coaching perspective.

If you watch games where the team favored to win at these big odds, they already believe they can whoop you on the football field.

How about Davies Lobos upset of the Broncos back in 2015 by a score of 31-24 when playing on the blue turf that year the Lobos were a 31-point underdog.

Play that tape the night before the game, create a visual for the players that this has been done just four years ago. What can it hurt? This is where leadership from the head coach down to the leaders on the team must do all they can to get the team to play the game of their lives.

All upsets in college football are won, one down at a time and players start seeing we can play with this team and you keep playing and the confidence increases as the team continues to play and make plays.

2)  Explosive plays by the Lobo offense to score points.

This Lobo team does not lack the talent to play with just about anybody in the Mountain West conference, they have a solid quarterback, very good running backs and some very athletic receivers who can make plays.

New Mexico must get four quarters of leadership out of Quarterback Tevaka Tuitoi as far as him not overthrowing open receivers, and just playing smart football.

Running the read or zone option correctly when the tackle crashes and the quarterbacks keeps the ball for long gains, move the chains.  Just smart option football. There is a reason most teams have some variation of the option because it works when run properly.

The Lobos have some real offensive threats to any defense in this offense as running backs Ahamri Davis, Bryce Carroll and receivers Jordan Kress and Marcus Williams

For some reason or another, we have not seen a complete game where each has been made explosives plays to help the Lobos score touchdowns.

The Lobos came up short against the Nevada Wolf Pack two weeks ago, falling 21-10. RB Ahmari Davis put forth a good effort for the losing side as he rushed for 80 yards and one TD on 15 carries.

3)  Defense needs to keep this game from getting out of hand.

Defensive Coordinator Jordan Peterson started the season with a ton of JC Players in the secondary and has had his hands full at getting them all on the same page along with injuries.

These injuries have forced the Lobos to uses younger players still learning a 3-3-5 systems and has given up huge chunks of yards in the passing game.

Linebackers Alex Hart, Mo Vainikolo and Jacobi Hearn, who have combined for 27.5 tackles for loss and all have had outstanding seasons helping the Lobos stop opponents running the ball. The New Mexico Lobos defense has allowed 35.78 points per game and must play lights out against a very physical Bronco team.

The secondary must not give big plays up, on the contrary, they must make plays.  An interception or takeaway. Do anything to create momentum for your team.

Coach Bryan Harsin teams tend to be very physical and you had better get ready for the physicality if you are going to have any hopes of pulling the upsets.

His teams remind me very much of a Rocky Long’s team in that they play smart, tough and physical football.

For the first time all year the top two spots are unanimous

Boise State and Air Force are at the top

The top two spots are non-negotiable this week and they both come from the same division. Boise State sits at the top with all of the first-place votes and then Air Force comes in next with all voters choosing those two teams as their first and second choice.

The Falcons moved up from three to two and the Broncos took the top spot all to themselves after defeating Wyoming and also San Diego State dropping a game to Nevada.

The Aztecs drop from two to the fourth spot with Wyoming moving up one spot to No. 3 despite losing in overtime to Boise State. The rest of the rankings see a mishmash of teams jumping up or down one spot.

Teams are fighting for bowl eligibility

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 12th week of Mountain West football in what we are dubbing “trophy week” as so many games have a trophy on the line this weekend. Things get started with the Old Oil Can as Fresno State takes on San Diego State on a Friday night game. The Bulldogs need two wins to become bowl eligible and this a game that might be close than some think.
On Saturday the UNLV Rebels host the Hawaii Warriors for what we call the “Golden Pineapple” which is far superior compared to the “Ninth Island Showdown.” Wyoming and Utah State battle for Bridger’s rifle in what could be a defensive showdown, Colorado State is fighting for bowl eligibility vs. Air Force for the Ram-Falcon trophy. The final game of the day does not have a trophy on the line as Boise State takes on New Mexico.

SERIES RECORD: This is the first meeting between the University of New Mexico and the University of Green Bay.

ODDS: New Mexico -12, per KenPom

PREVIEW: The New Mexico Lobos stay home for a third straight game in a four-game home stand to start the season, hosting the Green Bay Phoenix in non-conference play on Wednesday, November 13 at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit in Albuquerque.

New Mexico has gone 2-0 to open the season while Green Bay is 1-1 on the season. Most recently, the Lobos had a solid outing against Cal State Northridge, beating the Matadors 97-70 behind a steady offense and stretches of a strong defense. Green Bay last played Wisconsin-Stout, a 115-64 rout against the Division III University.

Through their 2-0 start, New Mexico has been led by Carlton Bragg (15.0 points, 5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks per game) and Corey Manigault (15.0 points 1.5 blocks per game), though six Lobos have averaged double figures in scoring through the small sample size of contests. JaQuan Lyle has demonstrated his passing prowess as advertised, leading the way with 8.0 assists per game through the first two games.

So far the offense has been clicking for New Mexico, averaging a scorching NCAA-leading 60.0% field goal percentage and 22 assists through its two wins (yes the strength of schedule isn’t great and its a very small sample, but still something for the Cherry and Silver to be encouraged about).

So far for Green Bay, scoring has been very evenly distributed through the roster with Kameron Hankerson (12.5 points per game) and Freshman Amari Davis (12.5 points, 1.5 steals per game) leading the Phoenix.

Prior to Green Bay’s blowout win over Wisconsin-Stout, the Phoenix struggled against a good Purdue team to open the season, a 79-57 loss, making it hard to say where this team sits in the fabric of college basketball. Being among the top 30 or so teams in returning minutes should help Green Bay to be competitive in most games, including against New Mexico.

New Mexico’s oft employed start-to-finish full-court press that Weir stuck to in his first two years with the program has not been seen much in New Mexico’s first two games. Instead, he has made a point to help his team improve its half-court defense.

So will this be the first game we’ll see the full-court press?

Noting that the first two teams have been quicker teams, and that his team has struggled against quicker opponents, Paul Weir noted, “Right now, to me, we’ve got to, as a team – whether we’re matchups or no matchups – we would be playing this way (emphasizing half court defense) regardless of anybody because we need to learn to get stops in the half court and as we expand it going forward, we may or may not . . .”

For New Mexico, this is looking like one of those quadrant 4 type games against a team with enough pieces coming back to cause a little bit of trouble if the defense isn’t there. Like I said in a previous article predicting New Mexico’s postseason chances, this is just the kind of game New Mexico can’t lose to look good to the selection committee because of its relatively limited supply of quadrant 1 and 2 games.

As expected, seniors JaQuan Lyle and Carlton Bragg have been key components to New Mexico’s early wins and should continue to produce at a high level. Corey Manigault has shown a high degree of offensive efficiency. His 15.0 points per game have been accomplished in just 18.0 minutes per game with a field goal percentage of 70.6%.

If New Mexico’s excellent inside-out game and ability to move the ball become the story of this game, even an off-night defensively might keep Green Bay in check.

But it’s probably better to be safe and just continue working the half-court defense.

Injuries/Roster Updates:

  • New Mexico: 6’0″ point guard Drue Drinnon has entered the transfer portal to be closer to family. No injuries reported.
  • Green Bay: No injuries reported.

Mountain West Wire’s Player of The Year Watch List: Week One

We are tracking each Mountain West performance of this week to determine the player of the year.

[jwplayer 18QegcJn-sNi3MVSU]

Mountain West Wire’s Player of The Year Watch List: Week One

Take A Look At Who Played Well for Mountain West Teams In Week One.

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Who is in the running for Player of the Year?

The staff at the Mountain West Wire wanted to do something a little different this year. We are going to keep track of the top performers from teams around the Mountain West throughout the year and vote on who had the best performances that week.

How It Works:

Each person will award 15 points in total to five players and should award it as so:

1st place (Player of the week): 5 pts

2nd place: 4 pts

3rd place: 3 pts

4th place: 2 pts

5th place: 1 pt

The player with the most points total will be our player of the week and we will keep track of the point totals every week so that the player who has the most at the end of the year will receive the Mountain West Wire Player of the Year award. Just copy the players below and type your names above it like we do for the pick them docs we get and award your points.

Now some guys made the list and others didn’t. A big thing to think about was consistency throughout the week. Something that hurt some guys was having a decent game one day and a bad one the other day. Guys who made the list had a great game one day and a good one on other days, or good games both days.

This column will come out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings depending on how late some games finish on Sundays.

The order for the first week is as follows:

1. Lindsey Drew, senior guard Nevada (5 points):

30 Points 8 Assists 6 Rebounds against Utah

24 Points 9 Rebounds 7 Assists against Loyola Marymount

2. Derrick Alston Jr, junior guard BSU (4 points):

25 Points 5 Rebounds 4 Assists against Life-Pacific

28 Points 2 Rebounds against Oregon

3. Amauri Hardy, junior guard UNLV (3 points):

15 Points 6 Assists 5 Rebounds against Purdue Fort-Wayne

27 Points 4 Rebounds 3 Assists against Kansas State

4. Jordan Schakel, junior guard SDSU (2 points):

15 Points 4 Rebounds 2 Assists against Texas Southern

19 Points 5 Rebounds against Brigham Young

5. Sam Merrill, senior guard USU (1 point):

28 Points 5 Rebounds 3 Assists against Montana State

14 Points 6 Rebounds 6 Assists against Weber State

Taking a Look Mountain West Opponents in Week Two and how they Performed in Week One.

Each Mountain West Team’s Opponents for Week Two

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Take a look at each team’s opponents for this week and how they did last week.

We seek to take a look at each team’s opponents for the next week while also taking a look at their performance the previous week. These should be coming out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings going forward until the end of non-conference play depending on possible late night games on Sunday or not. And then traditional previews will take over since with conference play comes more familiarity with opponents.

Air Force Falcons

Tues, Nov. 12th

Army Black Knights:

Coach K’s alma mater is 1-1 on the season but that lone win comes against the US Merchant Marine Academy. That lone loss came at the hands of 10th ranked Villanova by 43 points. They are led by senior guard Tommy Funk who is averaging 13.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 4.5 APG. These military academy games mean a lot to these schools and I look forward to the Falcons taking the Black Knights on at home.

Boise State Broncos

Fri, Nov. 15th

California-Irvine Anteaters:

The Anteaters will face a familar face to Boise State fans in Life-Pacific on Tuesday. But after that they take on Boise State in The Taco Bell Arena on Friday. Irvine is 1-1 so far downing San Diego on opening night and losing to Pepperdine on Saturday by 3 points in Malibu. UC-Irvine is led by senior guard Evan Leonard who is averaging 19.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 2.0 APG through two games.

Colorado State Rams

Wed, Nov. 13th

Omaha Mavericks:

The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season but have not won against a division one team thus far. They are led by junior guard Ayo Akinwole who is averaging 16.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 7.0 APG through two games and has junior forward Matt Pile who is averaging a double-double (14.0 PPG and 12.0 RPG).

Sat, Nov. 16th

Loyola Marymount Lions:

Loyola Marymount is coming off of a close loss to Nevada in Reno on Saturday which put them at 1-1 on the season. Eli Scott was the guy on Saturday but the Lions are actually led by sophomore forward Ivan Alipiev who is leading the team with 19.0 PPG and 7.5 RPG.

Fresno State Bulldogs

Tues, Nov. 12th

San Diego Torreros:

San Diego is in a bit of a rebuild after losing a talented group of seniors last year. They are 0-2 on the season and are led by sophomore guard Joey Calcaterra, who is averaging 16.0 PPG in both losses.

Sun, Nov. 17th

California State University San Bernardino Coyotes:

The Bulldogs take on an undefeated Coyotes team who have two wins against division two opponents. They are led by senior guard Jeremy Smith who is averaging 26 PPG through week one.

Nevada Wolf Pack

Tues, Nov. 12th

Texas-Arlington Mavericks:

The Mavericks are off to a great 2-0 start including a 14 point win against Tulsa on Saturday. Watch out for senior forward Jabari Narcis who is averaging 11.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG and 2.0 BPG. If he has a big night in the paint, the Wolf Pack don’t have enough front court depth to keep him in check.

Sat, Nov. 16th

Southern California Trojans:

As Andy Enfield’s seat started to get a bit hot in Los Angeles he went out and got one of the best recruiting classes in the last decade for the Trojans and it’s paying off. His team is being led by his two five star freshman Isaiah Mobley and Onyeka Okongwu, and Big O is showing dominant play while averaging a double-double (20.0 PPG and 11.5 RPG).

New Mexico Lobos

Wed, Nov. 13th

Green Bay Phoenix:

The Phoenix are 1-1 on the season after a 51 point win against Wisconsin-Stout and a loss at Purdue. Watch out for freshman guard Amari Davis who averaged 12.5 PPG in last weeks action and junior guard PJ Pipes who is averaging 2.5 SPG.

Sat, Nov. 16th

Mcneese State Cowboys:

The cowboys are 0-2 on the season and face Wisconsin on Wednesday before taking on the Lobos on Saturday. Look out for junior guard AJ Lawson who averaged 17.5 PPG in two games against Western Michigan and Louisiana Lafayette.
