Please, NBA fans: Let Knicks die-hards have this

A game over .500 means more than you think.

I see your jokes, NBA Twitter.

I see how everyone’s rolling their collective eyes at New York Knicks fans as the team that’s struggled for decades for any sort of relevance won another game on Sunday and moved to 18-17 and the No. 4 spot in the Eastern Conference (imagine if I told you before the season THAT was a sentence I’d be writing!).

But, please: let us have this.

Full disclosure, as you may know from previous musings on the Knicks: I grew up in and still live in New York City. I spent many a night at Madison Square Garden watching the Patrick Ewing Era teams get so close to a title.

So I’m with these guys outside of MSG going nuts like the Knicks just clinched a spot in the Finals:

Maybe you get it, that this franchise has suffered through being the punchline year after year, including with current NBA players — which is the worst indignity, because they get to decide if they want to sign with the franchise and make it better — and elsewhere.

But when the Knicks are good, there’s nothing like it. New York is a basketball city, despite what countless Yankees fans might claim. Linsanity was surreal, in part because of the magic at MSG with die-hards going ballistic every night watching what he could do.

And these Knicks might not be a true playoff contender who will continue this surprising ascension. But they have something. That something is a young nucleus led by R.J. Barrett, Immanuel Quickley (remember how critics scratched their head over that pick?), Mitchell Robinson and Obi Toppin. Julius Randle is an All-Star playing out of his mind. They’re defending and have an actual identity under Tom Thibodeau, and a stable front office under Leon Rose. There’s even this feeling that the much-slammed Kristaps Porzingis trade … may have actually turned out to be a good move?

So pardon me if Knicks fans get rowdy at the mere fact that the team is a game over .500. This is a truly big deal. The fanbase isn’t just celebrating this year. It’s the hint that maybe something right is finally happening that could lead to bigger things.

I know the next words out of your mouth: something to the effect of, the Knicks could do the same thing they’ve done in the past 20 or so years and make the wrong trade or waste their next pick, or a devastating injury could wash it all away.

But that’s true for any sports franchise, isn’t it?

So, I beg of you: let Knicks fans have this.

Utah Jazz at New Orleans Pelicans odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Utah Jazz at New Orleans Pelicans NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Utah Jazz (27-7) visit the New Orleans Pelicans (14-19) Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Smoothie King Center. Below, we analyze the Jazz-Pelicans odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

The Jazz are coming off a 1-1 swing through Florida as part of the first half of a four-game road trip. They lost to the Miami Heat 124-116 Friday as 6.5-point favorites and rebounded with a 124-109 victory at the Orlando Magic Saturday as 9.5-point faves. Against Orlando, SG Donovan Mitchell scored 25 of his team-high 31 points in the second half.

The Pelicans return home from an 0-2 road trip in which they lost by a combined 7 points. They dropped a 129-125 thriller at the Milwaukee Bucks Thursday but covered the spread as 8-point underdogs, and they lost 117-114 at the San Antonio Spurs Saturday as 2.5-point favorites. PF Zion Williamson had 34 points in the loss to the Bucks and tallied 23 points and 14 rebounds against the Spurs.

This is third regular-season meeting between the Jazz and the Pelicans. Utah, which owns the NBA’s best record, swept New Orleans in a two-game set in mid-January, covering both games as a 6.5-point home favorite. In the opening 118-102 victory, Mitchell scored 28 points, and the Jazz hit 21 3-pointers. Two nights later, despite being outscored 43-31 in the first quarter, the Jazz claimed a 129-118 win, and Mitchell finished with 36 points.

Jazz at Pelicans: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Jazz 123, Pelicans 119

Money line (ML)

PASS. The projection has the Jazz coming out on top, but it’s not wise and too risky to bet a -275 money line.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

NEW ORLEANS +7 (-110) is worth a HALF-UNIT play. The Pelicans will be fired up to make a statement against the NBA’s top team. Behind Williamson, who has averaged 29.8 PPG over his past 10 games, they’ll give the Jazz everything they can.

The reason for caution is because the Jazz own the league’s best ATS record at 25-9 and also feature an NBA-best 23 wins by double-digit margins.

ATS records: Jazz 25-9 | Pelicans 14-19

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 235.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Before Saturday’s Under game vs. the Magic, the Jazz played 11 Overs in a row. Across their last 12 games, the Jazz averaged 120.8 PPG.

Meanwhile, the Pelicans lead the NBA with a 24-9 O/U record, including a league-best 14-2 O/U mark at home. In their 15 February games, the Pels averaged 121.4 PPG and allowed 119.1 PPG.

O/U records: Jazz 16-17-1 | Pelicans 24-9

Charlotte Hornets at Sacramento Kings odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Charlotte Hornets at Sacramento Kings NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Sacramento Kings (13-20) hosts the Charlotte Hornets (15-17) Sunday at the Golden 1 Center for a 10 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Hornets-Kings odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

Charlotte has been up-and-down in recent weeks and is 3-3 overall and ATS in the last six games. The defense has been a real issue for the Hornets in the first three of a five-game road trip as they’ve 127.6 points per in those games.

The Kings started out their month winning the first four games before going on a nine-game losing skid that they just snapped with a 110-107 win over the Detroit Pistons Friday. Sacramento was flirting with playoff contention but has fallen to 13th in the West.

Hornets at Kings: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Kings 118, Hornets 111

Money line (ML)

Slight lean on KINGS (-140), but if they get any pricier, I’d pass and just lay the points with Sacramento.

However, the Hornets are just too banged up, and the absence of key defenders should help an above-average Kings’ offense have success Sunday. Charlotte will be without its best perimeter defender in Graham and its best interior defender in Zeller.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Hornets have the third-lowest defensive rebounding rate, and according to CleaningTheGlass.com, Zeller is in the 89th percentile of bigs in on-off defensive rebounding rate.

Sacramento is 12th in offensive rebounding rate, ninth in field goal percentage within five feet of the basket, and Charlotte has the eighth-worst defensive field goal percentage within five feet of the basket.

like Kings guard De’Aaron Fox to penetrate the paint all game vs. the Hornets and for Sacramento to dominate the interior without Zeller in the lineup.

TAKE KINGS -2.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Given each team’s O/U record, Hornets-Kings feels like a surefire Over, but the puzzling line movement and my prediction being several points below BetMGM‘s projection has me lean UNDER 236.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit.

According to Pregame.com, nearly 80% of the bets placed for the total have been on the Over, yet it’s being brought down from a 239-point opener. What that tells me is the House wants pro-Over money, and we don’t want to play into the House’s hands.

I’m not in love with this bet, so don’t wager too much on it, but the UNDER 236.5 (-110) is the better play.

Memphis Grizzlies at Houston Rockets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Memphis Grizzlies at Houston Rockets NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Memphis Grizzlies (14-15) travel to the Toyota Center Sunday to play the Houston Rockets (11-20) at 8 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Grizzlies-Rockets odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

The Grizzlies split a two-game miniseries with the Los Angeles Clippers, where each team won by at least 20 points, and they have lost three of their previous four games. The other two losses were to a red-hot Phoenix Suns team and a surging Dallas Mavericks.

Houston has plummeted since losing starting big Christian Wood and has lost all 10 games he has been out of the lineup. Over that stretch, the Rockets have the lowest-rated offense and the worst rebounding rate.

The Rockets routed the Grizzlies 115-103 in the first meeting this season, but Wood was active in that game and starting Memphis big Jonas Valanciunas didn’t play.

Grizzlies at Rockets: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 2:30 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Grizzlies -190 (bet $190 to win $100) | Rockets +155 (bet $100 to win $155)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Grizzlies -4.5 (-110) | Rockets +4.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 223.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Grizzlies at Rockets: Key injuries

Grizzlies

  • SG Grayson Allen (concussion) out
  • PF Jaren Jackson Jr. (knee) out

Rockets

  • C Christian Wood (ankle) out
  • SG Victor Oladipo (rest) out

Grizzlies at Rockets: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Grizzlies 116, Rockets 108

Money line (ML)

PASS because I like Memphis to win, but the Grizzlies (-190) is too expensive for an NBA regular-season favorite.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES -4.5 (-110) play the exact style that the Rockets aren’t equipped to play against. For instance, Memphis scores the 4th-most fast-break points per game and Houston is 29th in fast-break points per game allowed.

Furthermore, the Grizzlies scores the most paint points per game, and big Valanciunas should feast on a Rockets defense missing their best interior presence and rim protector in Wood.

Finally, there are a couple of notable pro-Grizzlies situational trends for this game including the Rockets being 1-5 ATS at home against losing teams and as a home underdog.

TAKE GRIZZLIES -4.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS with a lean on Over 223.5 (-110), but my predicted score aligns with BetMGM‘s projection – so I cannot bet it.

However, both teams play at a top-10 pace, and if the Grizzlies aren’t forcing turnovers, their defense isn’t that good. Memphis is ranked 27th in defensive effective field goal shooting, and the Over has cashed in four of Houston’s previous six games.

New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The New York Knicks (17-17) stop by the Little Caesars Arena Sunday for an 8 p.m. ET game against the Detroit Pistons (9-24). Below, we analyze the Knicks-Pistons odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

The Knicks have won back-to-back games and three of their last four entering Sunday. New York is one of the surprising teams so far this season and has a chance to end the month with a winning record after beginning it 9-13. The Knicks are 8-5 in February with an average score of 109.2-105.3.

Detroit’s season is nearing tank-mode as the Pistons have lost two straight and five of their last six games. The Pistons returned home after a five-game road trip in their last game only to lose to a Sacramento Kings team that was on a nine-game losing streak.

New York has won and covered two in a row against Detroit, and both games fell short of the total by at least 24 points.

Knicks at Pistons: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Knicks 111, Pistons 104

Money line (ML)

Situationally, this is a terrible spot for the KNICKS (-105) as New York played last night, and this will be its fourth game in six nights. Detroit has a winning ATS record, and the robotic sharp play is to fade an unproven Knicks team that could be on tired legs.

However, there’s real excitement around this Knicks team with Julius Randle getting selected to his first All-Star team, and if the Knicks win this game, they’ll be above .500 this deep into the season for the first time in years.

There are a lot of fair questions about New York’s legitimacy as a playoff contender, but the Knicks are on fire, and I’d rather follow that momentum than fade it. BET the KNICKS (-105) for 1.5 units.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS unless the number gets bet up to the Knicks +2.5. Despite the rest factor, there are a couple of ATS trends that support New York in this spot including the Knicks covering seven of their last eight against losing teams and the Pistons being 0-4 ATS in their last four as a favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

Slight lean on the Over 210.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit, but I much prefer the sides over the total in Knicks-Pistons. But, this total opened at 215 for a reason, and I am nervous this game will bust several of the Under trends both teams have.

Report: Thibs would be open to KAT reunion

According to a report, Knicks head coach would be open to a reunion with Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns.

The New York Knicks have surprised many with their fantastic start to the season, sitting 17-17 through 34 games, No. 5 in the East and 13th league-wide in net rating at +0.6.

All in all, first-year head coach Tom Thibodeau has done a great job pushing all the right buttons with the young team so far, and for him to have New York performing playoff-level basketball despite having just one star on the roster is quite impressive.

Of course, the Knicks looking this stable while playing in the league’s biggest market could make New York a very appealing free-agent or trade destination sooner rather than later, and there are already rumors attaching to them to various big names.

Among them, Karl-Anthony Towns, who played for Thibodeau for just over two seasons and is currently toiling away on the Minnesota Timberwolves, arguably the worst team in the league this year.

Although the common belief is that Towns and Thibodeau didn’t have the best working relationship during their time together in Minnesota, especially towards the end during the Jimmy Butler trade saga, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News recently reported that Thibodeau would ‘be open’ to a reunion with the supremely talented big man and that the Knicks are monitoring Towns’ situation (via SNY on YouTube):

Stefan Bondy: I don’t know if Minnesota would ever make Karl-Anthony Towns available. But as bad as things ended for Thibodeau in Minnesota, I’ve heard that he’d be open to Karl-Anthony Towns again because Thibodeau just wants to win  and he thinks Karl-Anthony Towns will help him do that. And so I know that Karl-Anthony Towns is somebody that’s actually been reported before that the Knicks are monitoring as well.

Towns is currently averaging 22.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game, and though he’s considered to be having a somewhat down season by his extremely high standards (reasonable considering all he’s been through recently), he’s still one of just four players putting up a 22/10/4 stat line in 2020-21, so there’s no doubt he’d be a huge pickup for any team, one that would not come cheap whatsoever.

But there’s no indication that Towns wants to go anywhere, even despite Ryan Saunders’ firing, the Timberwolves’ sloppy midseason coaching change that came afterward or the fact that team owner Glen Taylor has been trying to sell the franchise for a year.

In fact, just this week, Towns talked about wanting to spend his entire career in Minnesota despite all the turmoil going on with the club (via ESPN):

Towns made it clear that he wants to finish his career in Minnesota but described this latest coaching move as “just the business.” “I would love to finish my career here in Minnesota until obviously the business calls or business changes or whatever the case may be,” Towns said. “I don’t plan on it to, or at least I’m not hoping to make the decision. I want to build something great here. I want to build a legacy in Minnesota. I’m just every day trying to help our coaching staff and help this organization build a culture.”

Towns’ quote is somewhat interesting in that he said he’d want to stay in Minnesota until business ‘calls’, leaving the door wide open for things to change quickly.

But regardless, it’d be absolutely shocking to see a Towns trade go down this season, barring something major happening with the Timberwolves. If anything, Towns, who has three seasons left on his contract after this one, could decide it’s time to move on after the campaign, but anything like that going down in-season seems extremely unlikely.

If that change of heart does happen, however, one team that will be at the front of the discussion will be the Knicks, whose team president Leon Rose used to be Towns’ agent, and who have a head coach with a prior relationship with the 25-year-old.

Saturday Night Live spoofed LaVar Ball with incredible Weekend Update spot

So good.

Saturday Night Live has at times meandered along, riffing largely on the events of the week in predictable, but charming, ways. There’s just rarely much electricity in the product anymore.

But when it comes to having Kenan Thompson portray LaVar Ball. the show has … NEVA LOST.

Thompson-as-Ball stopped by the Weekend Update desk last night to give his thoughts on his son LaMelo’s incredible rookie season and it was genuinely laugh-out-loud funny for almost the entire bit. What makes the whole thing work, really, is that Thompson can barely hold it together. He’s being absolutely ridiculous — and yet, try as he might, he still can’t sound as grandiose and unwired as LaVar himself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTTwNPB64PA&feature=emb_imp_woyt

Thompson can never really get all the way into character. He’s too excited to deliver the next joke. And it works beautifully.

“Neva Lost to Godzilla. Neva to the Zilla.”

Atlanta Hawks at Miami Heat odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Atlanta Hawks at Miami Heat NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Miami Heat (16-17) host the Atlanta Hawks (14-19) Sunday at American Airlines Arena for the first game of a two-game miniseries. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Hawks-Heat odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

Atlanta started February with a winning record but has gone on three- and four-game losing streaks this month. The Hawks have alternated between winning and losing over their last seven games (3-4 straight up and against the spread) and are coming off a 118-109 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder as 5.5-point road favorites Friday.

The Heat have started to look like the team many NBA experts forecasted before the season and are winners of five in a row (5-0 ATS). Their most recent win was as impressive of a victory as you can have at this point in the season; Miami took down the white-hot Utah Jazz 124-116 as a 6.5-point home underdog Friday.

The Hawks won the final head-to-head meeting last season but lost the other three games to the Heat and were 1-3 ATS in the season series.

Hawks at Heat: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 11:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hawks +200 (bet $100 to win $200) | Heat -250 (bet $250 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Hawks +6.5 (-115) | Heat -6.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 219.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Hawks at Heat: Key injuries

Hawks

  • SF Danilo Gallinari (forearm) probable
  • PG Trae Young (groin) questionable
  • SF Cam Reddish (Achilles) doubtful
  • SG Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) out

Hawks at Heat: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Heat 119, Hawks 107

Money line (ML)

PASS because Miami is the right side but betting the Heat at -250 is a bad long-term strategy. “Crazy” stuff happens all the time in the NBA regular season.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The HEAT -6.5 (-105) are starting to dial-in offensively and there are several holes they can poke in the Hawks defense.

For example, Atlanta doesn’t force a lot of turnovers (27th in turnover rate), it sends opponents to the foul line (19th in defensive FTA/FG rate) and the Hawks are 26th in defensive effective field-goal percentage this month.

Miami is getting healthier and starting to look like last year’s team. The Heat averaged 120 points per game in back-to-back wins over an above-average Toronto Raptors defense and an elite Jazz D prior to Sunday’s game.

TAKE the HEAT -6.5 (-105) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

This part of the handicap is a little more reliant on the injury report because I’ll like the OVER 219.5 (-110) a little less if Young can’t play.

Miami’s offense has it going and Atlanta’s defense has declined this month. The Hawks will need to match the Heat’s scoring so even if Young is out, we should see a high volume of threes from Atlanta.

BET OVER 219.5 (-110) for a half-unit.

Suns at Timberwolves: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Suns 125, Timberwolves 110

Money line (ML)

The Timberwolves are still reeling. They have lost seven straight and 11 of their last 12. The Suns, meanwhile, have won four of five and 10 of 12. Minnesota played Saturday and was blown out, and the Suns played on the road Friday and picked up a win. This is almost as certain as any outcome, so take the SUNS -550.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Suns have a better cover percentage than everyone but the Utah Jazz this season at 65.6%. Peculiarly, every straight-up result has matched the ATS result. In every win this season, the Suns have covered the spread. In every loss, they have failed to cover the spread. This is now a 32-game trend. The Wolves not only have lost their last seven games, but they have also failed to cover the spread as well. Take the SUNS -10.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

After starting the year with one of the lowest Over percentages, the Suns are now even at 16-16, as eight of their last 10 games have gone Over. Minnesota’s last three games have gone Over. The Wolves allow the third-most points per game. Take the OVER 225.5 POINTS (-110).
