Clark’s ‘Caps: Lonzo will put clamps on CP3 in Suns vs. Pelicans

Geoff Clark breaks down three NBA player prop bet predictions for Friday’s NBA slate.

There are several rematches of games from earlier this week featured during NBA’s Friday night card including the Atlanta Hawks playing the Boston Celtics and two of the top teams from the West with Utah Jazz visiting the Los Angeles Clippers.

Here are a couple of my favorite NBA player prop bet predictions to consider Friday.

Friday’s NBA player prop bet predictions

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 3:50 p.m. ET.

Phoenix Suns PG Chris Paul UNDER 30.5 points, assists & rebounds (-125)

The Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans meet for a second time this season and Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball did a good job minimizing the damage done by CP3.

Lonzo held CP3 to only a combined 14 points, rebounds and assists (“PRA”) and kept Paul from getting one board. In their nine all-time meetings, CP3 is averaging just 23.6 PRA against Lonzo. Also, CP3 has gone over 30.5 PRA in just 10 of his 26 games this season.

Finally, the prop market is low-key, very sharp and it’s sniffed out this matchup already hence the extra vig on Under CP3’s PRA. BetMGM making this prop more expensive gives me more confidence in it cashing.

TAKE UNDER CHRIS PAUL 30.5 PRA (-125) for 1.25 units.

Chicago Bulls C Wendell Carter UNDER 11.5 points (-115)

The Philadelphia 76ers host the Chicago Bulls and it’s going to be a tough matchup for Bulls big Wendell Carter Jr. going against Defensive Player of the Year candidate Joel Embiid.

In his only game against Embiid, Carter put up just eight points. Philadelphia gives up the fewest points per game to opposing centers while holding them to the lowest shooting percentage and the seventh-fewest free-throw attempts per game.

Furthermore, the Bulls run the highest rate of pick-and-roll action for the roll man in the Association and the Sixers have elite pick-and-roll defense. Philadelphia allows the sixth-lowest points per possession and fifth-lowest shooting percentage to the roll man in a pick-and-roll play.

TAKE WENDELL CARTER UNDER 11.5 points (-115) for 1 unit.

Boston Celtics PG Kemba Walker OVER 18.5 points (-115)

This will be Kemba and Hawks guard Trae Young’s fifth meeting since Young joined the NBA and Kemba has dominated him in the prior four games.

Kemba scored at least 19 points in each game and is averaging 26.8 points per game and sinking 4.5 threes per game vs. Trae. Plus Kemba has been in and out of the lineup all season but has eclipsed 18.5 points in nine of his 16 games this year.

Lastly, the Hawks struggle against opposing point guards, ranking 23rd in points per game and 28th in free-throw attempts per game vs. opposing point guards.  BET KEMBA WALKER OVER 18.5 POINTS (-115) for 1 unit.

Taylor Swift graded Jimmy Butler’s dance moves and she was really kind about it

Taylor is a fan.

Jimmy Butler is a big Taylor Swift fan. We’ve known that for years. We’ve seen him singing her songs and even dancing to some of them on video. His teammates hate it, but it doesn’t matter. He keeps some Swift on the locker room playlist.

On Tuesday, the NBA on TNT crew dug up one of the videos with Butler dancing to a T-Swift song in the Bulls’ locker room back in 2014. Here he is, just getting dressed with no shirt or socks on.

Then, clearly, his favorite part comes on and he just loses it. He stops everything and just begins to bust moves. It was absolutely hilarious back then and it’s still pretty funny today.

Dwyane Wade and Shaq gave Butler a hard time for his moves. Wade gave him a 9, which was clearly a reference to his grade for Aaron Gordon’s final dunk in the dunk contest last year.

A couple of days later, though, Taylor Swift actually stumbles upon the video of the crew cracking jokes on Butler. So she gave him her own grade.

A whole 13 out of 10. Man. That’s some confidence.

Welp. Pack it up. That’s the only grade that matters. Congrats to Jimmy. No one can tell him anything now.

The Chicago Bulls will meet the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night from the Wells Fargo Center in Philly, stream the NBA action here.

The Chicago Bulls will meet the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night from the Wells Fargo Center in Philly.

The Bulls are coming off a 105-102 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday and will look to make it three in a row with a win tonight. As for the 76ers, they did blow a huge lead against the Rockets on Wednesday but thank god for Joel Embiid who kept them in the game and they were able to pull off the win 118-113.

Can the Bulls give the Sixers trouble on Friday night, Tune in and find out, here is everything you need to know to stream the NBA action tonight.

Toronto Raptors at Minnesota Timberwolves odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Toronto Raptors at Minnesota Timberwolves NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Toronto Raptors (14-15) visit the Minnesota Timberwolves (7-22) Friday at the Target Center for a 9 p.m. tip-off. Below, we analyze the Raptors-Timberwolves NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Toronto whooped up on the Milwaukee Bucks by double-digits in back-to-back games this week following a 116-112 loss at the Timberwolves on Valentine’s Day. After a slow start, the Raptors are playing much better as winners in seven of their last 10 games (7-3 ATS).

Minnesota’s victory over Toronto last weekend was its only win in the last seven games. The Timberwolves have lost two straight at home against the Los Angeles Lakers and Indiana pacers entering Friday. They failed to cover in both by a combined 2.5 points.

Raptors at Timberwolves: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Raptors 121, Timberwolves 114

Money line (ML)

PASS with a lean on Raptors (-145). One could make the argument for taking the Raptors straight-up given their bankroll, but I’d rather lay the points and/or put Toronto’s money line in a parlay.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

This is a theory I’ve been workshopping off the record, but, the absence of Kyle Lowry could be addition by subtraction for the Raptors, who are 4-0 with a 15-point average margin of victory in those games.

Lowry missed Toronto’s beatdown of Milwaukee last night, and his replacement SG Norman Powell flourished. In fact, Powell is averaging career-highs in points per game (16.7 ppg) and 3-point shooting (42.3%) and has scored 20 or more in every game Lowry has missed.

Lastly, since the beginning of last season, the Timberwolves are 1-12-1 ATS with a minus-7.8 spread differential in games with a rest advantage. Over that same time span, the Raptors have the third-highest winning percentage with a plus-2.7 spread differential as a road favorite.

I’m on the RAPTORS -2.5 (-110) for a half-unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

The T-Wolves’ offense is trending up: PG Ricky Rubio running the show for SG Malik Beasley who’s averaging a career-high 20.9 PPG, big Karl-Anthony Towns, who’s a lock for 20-10 every night and No. 1 overall pick Anthony Edwards, who has scored 20 or more four times this month.

Also, according to CleaningTheGlass.com, Minnesota attempts the fifth-highest rate of field goals at the rim and the 10th-highest rate of corner threes. These are two weak spots for a Toronto defense that’s ranked 18th in opponent’s shooting percentage at the rim and 24th in corner-three defense.

TAKE OVER 225.5 (-110) for 1.25 units.

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Celtics (14-14) host the Atlanta Hawks (12-16) for a second straight game Friday at the TD Garden. The tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Hawks-Celtics NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Atlanta upset Boston 122-114 Wednesday as 1.5-point underdogs thanks to a 40-point game from PG Trae Young. The Celtics were pretty banged-up though; Boston was without three starters, and the replacements got destroyed in the head-to-head matchups.

Neither team is playing good ball right now as the Hawks are 2-7 overall and 3-6 ATS this month while the Celtics are just 2-5 overall and ATS over their last seven.

Hawks at Celtics: Odds, spread and lines

Hawks at Celtics: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Celtics 120, Hawks 110

Money line (ML)

PASS because Boston is the right side, but the Celtics at -175 or more is out of my price range. Young and PF John Collins generally play well against a Celtics team that has looked shaky recently.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The probable returns of Kemba Walker and big Daniel Theis even the matchup for Boston at each position. Hawks bigs Clint Capela and Collins scored a combined 44 points on 84.2% shooting and added 19 boards vs. the Celtics Wednesday.

Kemba lights up Young: Kemba is averaging 26.8 points per game and shooting 42.9% from deep in four career games against Young. Also, the market is backing Boston because its loss to Atlanta Wednesday was more of a bad situation for the Celtics rather than a bad matchup.

TAKE CELTICS -4.5 (+100) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Bookmakers have projected this Hawks-Celtics game at 225.5 on the heels of their Wednesday meeting that went Over the total by 14 points.

Most of my handicap on the Hawks-Celtics total Wednesday applies to Friday’s matchup, and I don’t think the line movement for this game’s total was big enough. Theis’ return should give Boston more floor spacing, which obviously helps Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Kemba’s offense.

TAKE OVER 225.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Denver Nuggets at Cleveland Cavaliers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Denver Nuggets at Cleveland Cavaliers NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Denver Nuggets (15-13) stop by the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse for a 7 p.m. ET tip-off at the Cleveland Cavaliers (10-19) Friday. Below, we analyze the Nuggets-Cavaliers NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

What started out as a promising season for Cleveland (8-7 in the first 15 games) turned into a dumpster-fire year with the Cavaliers shopping around league-leading rebounder big Andre Drummond. After winning Feb. 1, the Cavs have lost eight consecutive games and haven’t covered in 11 straight.

Denver have dropped back-to-back games following a three-game winning streak, which started with a 133-95 mopping of the Cavs Feb. 10 and wrapped up with an impressive 122-105 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Nuggets at Cavaliers: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:50 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Nuggets -350 (bet $350 to win $100) | Cavaliers +275 (bet $100 to win $275)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Nuggets -8.5 (-110) | Cavaliers +8.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 225.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Nuggets at Cavaliers: Key injuries

Nuggets

  • PF JaMychal Green (shoulder) probable
  • SF Will Barton (personal) out
  • SG Gary Harris (thigh) out
  • PF Paul Millsap (knee) out

Cavaliers

  • PG Matthew Dellavedova (concussion) questionable

Nuggets at Cavaliers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nuggets 122, Cavaliers 111

Money line (ML)

PASS on the money line since a Nuggets straight-up win is too expensive. As bad as the Cavs are right now, Cleveland winning wouldn’t even be the biggest upset this week.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Slight lean on NUGGETS -8.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit partially as a play on Denver, but also against Cleveland.

The Cavs are injured and checked out. Drummond is shelved until he’s traded and their leading-scorer, guard Collin Sexton, has a minus-29 net rating in his career vs. the Nuggets. Cleveland is bad in most areas and needs Sexton to get buckets in order to keep these games against good teams tight.

The Nuggets are 9-1 overall with the highest spread differential and the highest net efficiency vs. bottom 10 offenses, according to CleaningTheGlass.com.

Furthermore, Cleveland is just 0-5 ATS this season when spotted 7.5-9.5 points. Even the banged-up Nuggets have enough bodies to roll the Cavs.

Over/Under (O/U)

Cleveland went Under the total by a half-point in its last game at the Golden State Warriors, but four straight Overs cashed prior. A major reason is the Cavs having the worst defensive rating and allowing the most points in the paint this month.

However, they do score roughly eight points more per game at home, and the Over is 5-1-1 in Cavaliers last seven games as a home ‘dog.

TAKE OVER 225.5 (-105) for a half-unit.

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Utah Jazz (24-5) will take on the Los Angeles Clippers (21-9) for the second-straight game. Utah won the previous game on Wednesday night, 114-96. Tipoff for the rematch is set for 10:00 p.m. ET at the Staples Center. Below, we analyze the Jazz-Clippers NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Jazz at Clippers: Odds, spread and lines

Jazz at Clippers: Key injuries

Jazz

Jazz at Clippers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Jazz 121,  Clippers 114

Money line (ML)

The JAZZ (-185) continue to dominate the rest of the NBA as they have now won nine-straight games and 19 of their last 20 contests. They are an incredible 11-3 on the road this season and appear ready to take the next step as a team. Look for the Clippers to play better in this game than they did Wednesday night, but for the Utah Jazz to extend their winning streak to double-digits.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The JAZZ (-4.5, -105) is a little risky as the line has beefed up from 2.5 points this morning. Utah has covered in eight of their last nine road games and is 8-0 against the spread in their previous eight games. Add on the fact that they’ve covered in five of their last six games against the Clippers and it’s not hard to be on the Jazz side once again. Look for this game to be closer and likely come down to the last few possessions, but for Utah to ultimately cover.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 224.5 (-110) is the right play here as both teams have top-five offenses this season. While it’s uncertain who may be in or out for the Clippers, they just find ways to produce on offense. Both squads are averaging over 115 points per game to rank inside the top-four in three-point percentage. Each offense can win in so many different ways, and that is why the over feels like a good bet here.

Myles Turner hilariously trolled a fan after they complained about his play

This is just top tier trolling.

Myles Turner is quickly climbing up the rankings of the best personalities in the NBA.

He’s always been fairly active on Twitter and has never hesitated in interacting with fans whether they’re happy with him or not. On Friday he took it to another level, though.

A fan complained about Turner’s play in the Pacers’ recent loss to the Bulls. He didn’t play his best game, so the fan complained and, for whatever reason, sent Turner a Venmo request for $100 after his bad game.

Fast forward a few days later and Turner actually responded. It wasn’t with that $100, though.

He sent the fan a “penny for your thoughts.”

The fan posted Turner’s send to Twitter, saying that he didn’t appreciate Turner’s response to his request. Turner had an amazing response for that too.

Man. This was just incredible. Shoutout to Turner. What a response.

Bulls’ Denzel Valentine opens up about balancing life as a hooper and recording artist

Chicago Bulls wing Denzel Valentine is premiering his music video for “On Sight (feat. Rockie Fresh)” with For The Win.

NBA player Denzel Valentine celebrated Valentine’s Day by releasing his debut EP, putting out eleven songs that he wrote and recorded.

The project from Valentine, a 27-year-old wing for the Chicago Bulls, is entitled “517: Made Me” and is a homage to his hometown of Lansing, Michigan. You can stream his newest project in its entirety right here.

Valentine, who was selected with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft and re-signed with the Bulls during the offseason, recently touched base with For The Win to discuss his latest musical endeavors.

He is also premiering a music video for “On Sight (feat. Rockie Fresh)” which you can watch below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U4Mlg45Lvk&feature=youtu.be

Thanks for your time today, Denzel. I’d love to hear a little bit more about your background in music and how you would describe it.

DV: I started making music during my junior year of college. My roommate, Eron Harris, was making music on his laptop. I’d been freestyling since high school. He asked me if I wanted to jump on one of his tracks. Ever since then, I’ve kept with it. When I got to Chicago, I made sure to get a studio in my apartment. My music is about my life and how I feel because I want it to be real. I’m versatile. There are tracks of me straight rapping and there are tracks of me where it’s more R&B.

What are some of the things you appreciate most about making music?

DV: It helps so much to be able to vent [Laughs]. Music, for me, is a form of venting. I’m trying to relate to the fans and let them hear my side of the story or just get my mind off everything. I don’t have to think about what I have going on the next day and all of the things that I have to do. I’m just fully present when I’m in the studio listening to music.

What are some of the biggest influences that led you to pursue this a bit more seriously?

DV: I was listening to hip-hop with my dad since I was born. My dad is definitely my biggest inspiration for me diving into this kind of music. We used to listen to Jay Z, 50 Cent, Tupac, Biggie and all of the old-school rappers. Once I started listening to rap on my own, I started listening to Lil Wayne. He was the first rapper that I really liked. I also got pretty into Drake and Meek Mill. Those are my three favorites of all-time so I want to make music the way they make music.

How did you turn from being a basketball player and hip-hop fan into someone who makes music as well?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CUsS4WplGw

DV: My first time in a studio was in Michigan when I played for Michigan State. I had a friend who brought me and some of my teammates. I became friends with an engineer who was there. When I moved out to Chicago, he set up the studio. He couldn’t come back and forth all of the time so my friend Rockie Fresh, who is a rapper, took me to Classick Studios on the west side of Chicago. I met someone there who was down to help me out at my crib. It was all very organic.

What is the process that you follow when you are recording?

DV: If I’m going to do something like this, I’m going to do it with good quality. There are times where I’ll go in there and punch in and just freestyle when I’m really feeling it. There are also times where I’ve gotten beats and I’ll wake up early or it’s late at night and I’ll get to writing lyrics. But it takes a lot of time. It’s not just recording sessions. It’s mixing and mastering and listening to it again and making sure it sounds cool. I know now why great artists take so much time to put out their projects.

How much of your music would you say is about basketball?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1q-F2SR_I0

DV: I’d say one-third of my music is me talking about basketball. Another third is about the other stuff I’m doing right now, all of the fun times. The rest is just about my past and how I got to this moment. I’ll talk about my upbringing.

As a professional athlete, what are the biggest challenges you face as a recording artist?

DV: The biggest challenge is finding the time to actually get better at it. I am such a gym rat so I’m always in the gym trying to get better at basketball. So it’s hard to find the time. But when I do have the time, I also have to make sure my engineer is free and make sure I have the right beat that I’m feeling. Balancing everything can be tough.

Has the pandemic allowed you to create your art a bit more often than usual?

DV: Everything was shut down so I was mostly focusing on lifting weights. Other than that, I was either chilling at my place or in the studio. I definitely used that time to lock in, figure out what I wanted to talk about and make that music. This definitely sped up the process of being able to put out music.

What do your teammates think about you moonlighting as a musician?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F6gz4WnKr0

DV: Otto Porter Jr. has been in the studio with me but he doesn’t rap. Some of my friends from college have hopped in, too, like Gary Harris from the Denver Nuggets. They think it’s pretty cool. Bryn Forbes and Gary have been listening to my music since like 2015. They like hearing their shoutouts and they’re really supportive when I send them tracks. They also tell me that I should continue, too, which definitely helps.

If you were to collaborate on a track with someone in the NBA, who would it be and why?

DV: If it were anybody, it would have to be Damian Lillard. I think he’s the best. He could actually be a rapper for real. His last project, I got into it, I was listening for a solid few weeks. I’ve definitely got a ton of respect for him not only as a player but as a rapper, too. He was an influence on me. I saw him doing it and thought I could try it, too. Everything is organic with me so maybe one day we can do a track together.

Basketball is obviously your primary focus. But do you have any particular long-term goals with music?

DV: I definitely want to keep getting better. I want to get in the studio with some of my favorite rappers one day. I’m excited to see what the future holds.

Previewing Friday’s Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia 76ers (19-10) host the Chicago Bulls (12-15) Friday at the Wells Fargo Center for an 8 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Bulls-76ers odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

Chicago has won back-to-back games over Central Division foes and three of its last four (3-1 ATS) entering Friday. The Bulls have been a tough out behind leading-scorer SG Zach LaVine and are 5-4 overall in February with the 10th-highest net rating thanks to an improvement on defense.

The Sixers snapped a three-game losing streak by holding on to beat the Houston Rockets 118-113 Wednesday to finish a four-game West Coast trip. All four of Philadelphia’s losses this month have come against winning Western Conference teams and the Sixers are 2-5-1 ATS in February.

The Bulls are 1-7 in their last eight games against the Sixers (3-5 ATS) with five of those losses being by double-digits.

Money line (ML)

PASS because Philadelphia is the right side but laying -350 with the Sixers or any NBA regular-season favorite for that matter is a terrible long-term strategy.

Against the spread (ATS)

Slight lean on 76ERS -8.5 (+100) because they match up very well against the Bulls and are due for a bounce-back performance after struggling over their last four games.

Chicago runs a lot of pick-and-roll plays and Philadelphia has a top-10 pick-and-roll defense. Also, the Sixers have the second-highest FT/FGA rate while the Bulls are 25th in defensive FT/FGA rate.

However, Chicago has the third-highest cover percentage and fourth-best ATS margin in the Association. Plus in their two regular-season meetings last year, the Bulls split the four quarters with the difference in each game coming in one lopsided second-half quarter in favor of the Sixers.

Finally, the backdoor is WIDE OPEN in this game. Philadelphia took its foot off the gas against Houston Wednesday and the Sixers didn’t cover as 8-point favorites despite being up 26 points at the end of the first half.

Over/Under (O/U)

GIMME OVER 228.5 (-115) for 1.25 units.

The projected totals for last year’s Bulls-76ers games were 212.5 and 213.5. BetMGM opening this total in the upper 220s suggests the House thinks we are going to see some points here.

There are a couple of trends supporting the Over as well: Chicago has a 5-1 O/U record in its last six as a road ‘dog and Philadelphia has cashed four consecutive Overs.

Also, the Bulls are 29th in both turnover rate and opponent’s points off of turnovers per game and the Sixers are 28th in both of those categories.
