The NBA debut of Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson is so anticipated that ESPN is bumping its marquee game of Nuggets-Rockets to showcase the 19-year-old phenom play his first game against the Spurs in New Orleans on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

With that in mind, let’s take a look back at how NBA legends did in their regular-season debuts.

Draymond Green claps back at Charles Barkley after ‘triple-single’ comment

The feud is back on.

The Draymond Green feud with Charles Barkley is back on!

The Hall of Famer took a shot at the Golden State Warriors forward who’s banged up and struggling this year, saying that “Draymond don’t talk as much since he averaging that triple-single.”

It’s hardly the first time Barkley has used that line about a player and far from the first time he and Green haven’t seen eye to eye.

It turns out Green responded four days ago, and he did so on an NBA on ESPN Instagram post about Barkley’s quote.

You make everything sound like a Wendy’s sandwich,” Green wrote in a comment, “or maybe he was speaking in terms of my rings.”

Here’s the post:

And the response:

It doesn’t seem like most people found this one all that great in terms of clapbacks:

Kobe Bryant lists 3 WNBA players he believes could play in the NBA

Kobe Bryant says WNBA stars like Diana Taurasi could keep up in the NBA.

No woman has ever played in an official NBA game, but according to Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, that doesn’t mean that many of the world’s best players in the WNBA aren’t capable of keeping up with the men.

In an interview with CNN, Bryant was asked if he believes whether a woman could ever play in the NBA one day. Bryant responded that there are several current players who could make it playing alongside men right now.

“I think there are a couple players who could play in the NBA right now, honestly. There’s a lot of players who have a lot of skill that could do it. Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, [Elena] Delle-Donne. I mean, there’s a lot of great players out there. They could most certainly keep up with them.”

Although a woman has never played in the NBA, multiple women have been selected in the NBA Draft. Denise Long became the first woman to be selected in 1969 as a 19-year-old, after the San Francisco Warriors picked her in the 13th round – though the selection, meant as a PR stunt, was vetoed by the commissioner. In 1977, the New Orleans Jazz selected Luisa Harris in the seventh round, but she declined to try out for the team. In 2013, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban made waves when he said he was considering drafting Baylor star Britney Griner with a second-round pick.

NBA Rookie of the Year Odds and Best Bets: Zion Williamson among favorites

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the 2019-20 NBA Rookie of the Year. Is Zion Williamson worth a bet among the midseason favorites?

[jwplayer uQxzB32J]

The 2019-20 NBA season is roughly half over and the top contenders for the Rookie of the Year award have started to emerge. The 2019 NBA Draft’s No. 1 pick in PF Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans makes his NBA debut Wednesday and remains among the betting favorites. Below, we analyze the 2019-20 NBA Rookie of the Year betting odds and make our picks. Can Williamson make up for missed time and upset the midseason favorites?

Get some action on the NBA Rookie of the Year odds or other NBA action by placing a legal sports bet at BetMGM.

NBA Rookie of the Year Picks: Zion Williamson +1100

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.

Williamson was considered the likely first overall pick for almost the entirety of his freshman season at Duke in 2018-19, and he just so happened to fall right into the lap of the Pelicans as the logical replacement to Anthony Davis. The 6-foot-6, 284-pound forward averaged 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 68.0% from the field over 33 games in his only college campaign.

He steps into a Pelicans lineup sitting 12th in the Western Conference at 17-27. They’re averaging 114.4 points per game and allowing 117.6 (minus-3.2).

While it’s conceivable Williamson’s return could lead the Pelicans to an unexpected playoff berth (they trail the Memphis Grizzlies by 3.5 games for the eighth seed), the Pelicans are unlikely to allow him to play all of their remaining 38 games. They have four sets of back-to-backs remaining, likely limiting Williamson to a maximum of 34 games for his rookie campaign.

Since the 2010-11 season, only PG Kyrie Irving in 2011-12 has won Rookie of the Year honors while playing fewer than 70 games. He played 51. It’s hard not to root for Williamson for the remainder of the season, but there’s no sense in backing him to win this award at such low odds. PASS.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Williamson to be named the 2019-20 Rookie of the Year would return a profit of $110 if he were to win.

NBA Rookie of the Year Picks: Top Contenders

Name Team Odds GP PPG RPG APG
Ja Morant MEM -556 37 17.9 3.5 7.0
Kendrick Nunn MIA +1000 43 16.3 2.8 3.6
RJ Barrett NYK +1200 41 14.1 5.2 2.5
Tyler Herro MIA +2500 40 12.9 4.2 2.1

Morant is favored by a landslide just past the halfway point of the season. The No. 2 pick of the draft has the Grizzlies in an unlikely playoff position and has fast-tracked their rebuild after the recent departures of franchise pillars C Marc Gasol and PG Mike Conley.

There’s no value in backing Morant with a $10 bet returning a profit of just $1.80. I’d make a small wager on Nunn (+1000) to hedge against a potential injury to Morant or collapse by the Grizzlies, but otherwise, I’m avoiding betting on an award seemingly already locked up.

Los Angeles Lakers at New York Knicks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Los Angeles Lakers at New York Knicks sports betting odds, with NBA matchup analysis and picks.

The Los Angeles Lakers (34-9) head to the World’s Most Famous Arena for their annual regular-season meeting against the New York Knicks (12-32) at Madison Square Garden for a 7:30 p.m. ET tip off Wednesday night. We analyze Lakers-Knicks odds and lines, with NBA betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Lakers at Knicks: Key injuries

  • PG Rajon Rondo (finger) probable

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Wednesday at 1:20 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Lakers 117, Knicks 103

Moneyline (ML)

Maybe miracle isn’t the right word, but the Knicks beating a mostly healthy Lakers team would be one of the more surprising regular season outcomes of the season. Knicks +475 should be closer to +10000, and betting Lakers -667 — or any team this heavily favored in the regular season — is lunacy.

PASS ON THE MONEYLINE.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Remember when Michael Jordan called Madison Square Garden “the Mecca of basketball”? Well that’s what you have to think of every time marquee talent comes in for a game at the Garden. Since 2015, the Knicks have the third-worst against the spread record as a home underdog in the NBA at 53-68-2. The primary reason? Teams get jacked up to put on a show in front of that crowd and, of course, that includes LeBron James. James’ teams are 19-8 straight up in the Garden and they’ve won nine out of their last 10 games there with the loss coming last season, which was the first season a LeBron team missed the playoffs in 13 years. The other Lakers star — Anthony Davis — also shows up big in New York. In six games as a visitor against the Knicks, Davis averages 29.5 points and 11.5 rebounds.

There are too many matchup edges to even write out. Simply put: the Lakers are much better than the Knicks. BET LAKERS -11.5 (-106).

Over/Under (O/U)

There are just too many Under trends forcing my wager here. The Lakers’ and Knicks’ combined over/under record is 40-47. When New York is a home underdog, its O/U record is 4-12, and when the Lakers are an away favorite the O/U is 7-8. Also, their first meeting on Jan. 7 went Under the total of 221.5 (Lakers 117, Knicks 87) and I envision a similarly one-sided — and low-scoring — affair.

BET UNDER 222.5 (-106).

Sacramento Kings at Detroit Pistons odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Sacramento Kings at Detroit Pistons sports betting odds, with NBA matchup analysis and picks.

The Sacramento Kings (15-28) visit the Motor City to play the Detroit Pistons (16-28) at the Little Caesars Arena for a 7 p.m. ET tip Wednesday night. We analyze Kings-Pistons odds and lines, with NBA betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Kings at Pistons: Key injuries

  • PF Richaun Holmes (shoulder) out

PISTONS

  • PG Tim Frazier (flu) out
  • SG Luke Kennard (knee) out
  • PF Blake Griffin (knee) out
  • PG Reggie Jackson (spine) questionable
  • Andre Drummond (mouth) questionable
  • PF Markieff Morris (toe) probable
  • PG Bruce Brown (thumb) available

Kings at Pistons: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Wednesday at 12:50 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Kings 111, Pistons 104

Moneyline (ML)

The Kings dropped their fifth straight Monday with a 118-113 overtime loss at Miami after a crushing fourth-quarter collapse. Detroit lost 106-100 at Washington Monday to end a two-game winning streak. Derrick Rose had his ninth consecutive 20 or more points game against the Wizards, however, and his name has been included in trade rumors due to the Pistons being a tank candidate.

The edge goes to the road team — Kings -115 — in this matchup. Motivation has to be through the roof for Sacramento to snap its losing streak and the Kings have won their last two meetings against the Pistons (both last season). Plus look at the injury report for the Pistons, who could be without five key contributors. Rebounding is key to this matchup — the team that got the most rebounds won eight out of the previous 10 Kings-Pistons games — so if Drummond isn’t out there, the Pistons could be in big trouble on the glass. Also, Detroit has played the second-easiest schedule in the NBA.

BET KINGS -115. New to sports betting? You would need to bet $115 on the Kings to win outright to make a $100 profit.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

BET KINGS -1.5 (-106) since it’s such a bettor-friendly vig and the low probability of Kings-Pistons being decided by a single point.

New to sports betting? Bet $53 on the Kings to win by 2 or more points to earn a profit of $50.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 222.5 (-106) is the right play here mostly because both teams are trash offensively. The Kings rank 24th in points per game and 21st in offensive rating, while the Pistons are 21st in PPG and 19th in offensive rating. Both teams also play at a slower tempo; Sacramento ranks 28th in Pace and Detroit ranks 20th. Furthermore, the referees assigned to this game have a combined over/under record of 40-45 so far this season.

Memphis Grizzlies at Boston Celtics odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Grizzlies at Celtics sports betting odds, with NBA matchup analysis and picks.

The Memphis Grizzlies (20-23) are heading to TD Garden for a matchup with the host Boston Celtics (28-14) on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Grizzlies at Celtics: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Celtics 122, Grizzlies 110

Moneyline (ML)

The Celtics come into this one having lost three of their last four games, but their one victory was a big one; they beat the Lakers 139-107 on Monday. The Grizzlies were streaking before losing to the Pelicans that same Monday, previously winning seven straight.

Boston is 7-0 in its last seven games against Memphis, though, and should have Kemba Walker on the floor Wednesday night. Bet the CELTICS (-295) to win straight up

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Celtics returns a profit of $3.39.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Boston has been excellent against the spread this season, going 24-16-2. The Celtics have been just average in their last 10 games, however, going 5-5. Memphis has covered in seven of its last 10 games but is 0-2 ATS in its last two.

The Celtics are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against the Grizzlies and 3-3 in their last six home games this season. Boston enters as a 7.5-point favorites in this one, so take the CELTICS (-7.5, +100) to cover at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over has hit in seven of the last eight games between the Celtics and Grizzlies, and in five of the Celtics’ last six games this season. Both teams rank in the top 11 in scoring and in the Grizzlies’ last 14 games against the Atlantic division, the total has gone Over 10 times.

The Over/Under in this one is 229.5, but the Celtics and Grizzlies will top that total. Bet OVER 229.5 (-129).

Denver Nuggets vs. Houston Rockets odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Denver Nuggets at Houston Rockets NBA matchup, with NBA betting odds, picks and best bets

The Denver Nuggets (30-13) will visit the slumping Houston Rockets (26-16) at the Toyota Center Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.  We analyze the Nuggets-Rockets sports betting odds and lines, with NBA betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Nuggets vs. Rockets: Odds, lines, picks, and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Wednesday at 12:20 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Nuggets 114, Rockets 110

Moneyline (ML)

Despite losing four straight games, the Rockets (-400) are the moneyline favorites at home on Wednesday night. Houston has been good at home this season, winning 14 of 21 at the Toyota Center. However, the NUGGETS (+310) have fared well on the road, as well, going 13-7. With the Rockets in a major slump, take the Nuggets here as they present far more value as they have been the better team this season.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager the Nuggets to win outright would return a profit of $31.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Rockets open this game as 8.5 point favorites over the NUGGETS (+8.5, -115). With the line moving to 9.5 points midday Wednesday, and with the Rockets having failed to cover the spread in six of their last seven games, you should avoid picking Houston here. While Denver certainly has a history of coming up short in Houston, they are the far better bet here this time. Take the Nuggets and the points.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 226.5 points, which feels just about right considering how explosive each offense has been this season. It’s worth noting that the under has hit in five of the last seven games for the Nuggets as they have the No. 3 scoring defense. Expect there to be plenty of scoring in this one, but for the UNDER (226.5, -110) to nonetheless hit.

Zion Williamson’s NBA debut: How many points, rebounds and assists will he produce for Pelicans?

Teeing up New Orleans Pelicans PF Zion Williamson’s NBA debut with a look at prop bets for his projected points, rebounds and assists totals

[jwplayer uQxzB32J]

New Orleans Pelicans PF Zion Williamson will make his NBA debut Wednesday night against the San Antonio Spurs. The No. 1 pick of the 2019 NBA Draft out of Duke has been sidelined up until now due to a right knee injury. We focus on the best NBA prop bet odds and picks centered around his much-anticipated debut, as he’s expected to be in the starting lineup for his first home game.

Zion Williamson Prop Bets: 12.5 Points

Buy into the hype and go with the OVER 12.5 (-167). The Pelicans, currently 12th in the Western Conference at 17-27 and 3.5 games back of a playoff spot, aren’t rushing Williamson back. They’ve been extremely cautious with their new face of the franchise, and they’ll be eager to get him involved in front of a home crowd.

Williamson averaged 22.6 points per game on 68.0% field-goal shooting in his freshman year at Duke as the go-to option on a star-studded roster. While an output such as that shouldn’t be expected for his NBA inauguration, 12.5 is rather conservative with only Pelicans SF Brandon Ingram (25.6) and SG Jrue Holiday (20.1) averaging more than 20 points per game this season. There’s plenty of shots available for Williamson.

Zion Williamson Prop Bets: 5.5 Rebounds

This is my favorite of the three statistical prop bets for Wednesday. Tap the OVER 5.5 (-134). He averaged 8.9 rebounds per game at Duke, with 3.5 coming on the offensive glass and 5.4 on the defensive end.

Get some action on Zion Williamson’s NBA debut with the New Orleans Pelicans and place a legal NBA sports bet at BetMGM. Bet now!

PF Derrick Favors leads the Pelicans with 10.1 RPG with Ingram ranked second at just 6.7. The Pelicans are 13th in the NBA with a rebound percentage of 50.0. The Spurs are 15th at 49.9%.

Zion Williamson Prop Bets: 1.5 Assists

This is where I’m taking the UNDER (1.5, -112). The Pelicans have been moving the ball well this season, with five players averaging at least 2.0 assists per game. Williamson averaged just 2.1 assists per game at Duke, and he’ll be counted on much less for distribution in the NBA.

The Spurs rank 27th in the NBA while giving up 25.4 assists per game to their opponents, but I’m looking for an eager Williamson to score whenever he gets the ball Wednesday. The rest of the Pelicans roster will be made well aware of the team’s desired role for Williamson on home court.

The HoopsHype Daily: David Stern’s memorial was yesterday, and NBA legends spoke highly of the commissioner

The NBA world was rocked when Stern passed away a few weeks ago. Yesterday, at the former commissioner’s memorial, many paid their respects.

ONE LAST GOODBYE: A memorial for the life of David Stern was held on Tuesday, and the turnout was a who’s who of NBA legends, current employees and the departed commissioner’s friends and family. Just a few of the big names who attended were Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon and Yao Ming.

It was a chance for many to pay their final respects to Stern, and Magic didn’t take that for granted, as the Hall-of-Fame ball-handler spoke beautifully of the man he referred to as his angel. Johnson credited Stern for saving his life by letting him play in the 1992 All-Star Game after his AIDS diagnosis, at a time when so little was known about the awful disease.

Former NBA employee and current Warriors president Rick Welts also spoke glowingly of Stern, telling a touching story about Stern donating money to the memory of a former partner of Welts’, who passed away from AIDS in 1994 and had a scholarship fund set up in his name by Welts. The Golden State front-office member says he and Stern never even talked about the donation.

His legacy may be complicated, but there’s no doubt Stern touch a lot of lives in a very positive way. He will be missed.

LATEST TRADE SCUTTLE: Tuesday brought a new batch of trade rumors.

The Warriors will be active sellers at the deadline, and Alec Burks, who’s posting a very solid season so far, is their likeliest trade candidate.

Following a strong spell of play and with the impending return of Zion Williamson, the Pelicans have pulled back on trade talks, including those involving Jrue Holiday and JJ Redick.

Unlike last season, Kyle Kuzma isn’t focusing on the trade talks that continue to surround him. Smart decision by the young forward.

BRUTAL INJURY: Dwight Powell reportedly suffered a torn achilles last night, an injury that will force him to miss the rest of the season. Horrific news for the underrated 28-year-old big man.

RETURN IMMINENT: Zion Williamson is so excited to return on Wednesday that he says he might not be able to sleep the night before the game. For the Pelicans’s sake, let’s all hope he does get some rest, because we’ve already seen what happens when he’s tired during games.

SUPPORT SYSTEM: Many were touched by the video of Delonte West that was circulating on social media yesterday. Jameer Nelson, Danny Ainge and Mark Cuban have been in communication with West since his troubles started, and they all badly want to help him get back on his feet.

ALWAYS ADAPTING: Fascinating film breakdown here of the ever-evolving Bucks offense, which remains elite despite the difficulty their best player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, has shooting the basketball.

ABANDONED JUMPER: James Harden has made just nine of his last 51 three-point attempts, including a brutal 1-for-17 performance from the outside on Monday. Harden responded by having an intense shootaround immediately after the Rockets’ loss to Oklahoma City that night.

TIGHT LIPPED: If you were wondering why it seems like we’re getting fewer and fewer enlightening/introspective/hilarious player quotes recently, it’s because teams are having fewer shootarounds than ever, prioritizing rest for their players instead. That means less time in front of the media for players, and, unfortunately, fewer quotes for all of us.

THANKS BUT THAT’S ENOUGH: Alex Caruso has enjoyed seeing his name receive so many All-Star votes this year, but he’s glad this saga is almost over so the deserving players can get the attention they deserve.

EARLY STRUGGLES: This season, the Clippers have learned that building a super team is far from easy, from the load management to greatly heightened expectations to learning to play alongside one another.

ALREADY A GREAT: Bradley Beal recently passed Wes Unseld to become the Wizards’ second all-time leading scorer, trailing just backcourt mate John Wall. Beal is honored to have his name sharing the history books with so many Wizards and Bullets greats.

LOSING A FATHER: Nicolas Batum’s first memory is of his father collapsing on a basketball court and eventually passing away at the way-too-young age of 30. His father’s demise not only led to a lifetime of Batum worrying that the same would happen to him at 30, but it also got Nic red-flagged prior to the draft and almost forced him to not get selected in 2008.

GO-TO MEAL: A steakhouse in Dallas called Nick & Sam’s has become the top restaurant choice for various visiting teams and players, including both the Warriors and Doc Rivers himself. Here’s the story of how that came to be, featuring a whole lot of Dirk.
