Bowling Green vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Bowling Green can’t play the role of spoiler – Miami University has to win next week against Kent State no matter what to take the MAC East – but it can certainly make things scary for a 5-5 RedHawk team tying to get bowl eligible.

The Falcons got rim-rocked by Toledo last week, but the offense was balanced and terrific the week before in a shocking win over Buffalo. Miami doesn’t make enough big plays in the secondary, the ground game has only hit the 200-yard mark once against FBS teams, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Miami University Will Win

Bowling Green’s offense doesn’t score enough.

The 56 hung on Buffalo aside, getting to 28 points is an issue for the Falcons – they didn’t do it against anyone but the Bulls.

Miami’s defense got into a fight with Ohio a few weeks ago, but it’s been among the best in the MAC in total defense and scoring D, allowing 23 points or fewer in eight of the last nine games.

Control the game with an offensive line that doesn’t allow plays behind the line, rely on the defense, assume Bowling Green will get hit with at least eight penalties.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Again, this game sort of doesn’t matter to Miami in the MAC race, but getting bowl eligible now is a must – it doesn’t want to take its chances at relying on a win over Kent State.

It’ll get it with a slow and controlled game against a Bowling Green defense that will give up third down conversion after third down conversion.

Buffalo vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Buffalo run defense is but a mere rumor.

From home run touchdown dashes from Ohio, to getting hammered by Bowling Green and Akron for over 220 yards each, to the Kent State FlashFast style of offense, everyone is getting fat on this front wall.

How bad is this? The Bulls are 113th in the nation against the run allowing an average of 200 yards per game.

Can Miami take advantage of opportunity? Not really.

The RedHawks wouldn’t might running, but it only came up with 200 yards twice this year and once was against LIU of the FCS world.

On the other side, the Bulls are rolling with close to 500 yards in three of the last four games with a great balance, a lot of explosion, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Miami University Will Win

The Miami offense is about to throw a whole lot.

Teams are used to running the ball at will on the Buffalo D, but that’s not really what the RedHawks do.

Brett Gabbert is coming off a 492-yard passing day with five scores against Ohio, the O has hit over 200 yards through the air against everyone but Cincinnati, and the Buffalo secondary can be thrown on.

Gabbert will get time – the Miami offensive line has been fantastic at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Teams are usually too busy running the ball on the UB D and don’t bother with throwing, but getting past 200 yards isn’t going to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Neither defense is doing anything to take the ball away, both teams are coming off of embarrassing losses – Miami lost to Ohio and Buffalo somehow managed to lose to Bowling Green – and now it’s do-or-die time for any hopes of going bowling.

And Miami University is still in the MAC East title chase.

MU will get the running game going for the first time in a while, and the passing attack will work, too. The RedHawk defense will step up against the run, but Buffalo will throw well enough to stay in this. It won’t be enough.

It’s going to be surprisingly fun because neither side will stop the other. Miami will stop Buffalo more.

Miami University vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks are on a roll – and just in time.

They’re deep in the mix for the MAC East title – it’s relatively smooth sailing until what should be the game for the division at Kent State to close out the regular season – and they’ve figured out how to win good battles.

They’re on a run of three wins in the last four games, the passing game has been consistent, and they’re getting enough from the defensive and the offensive front to overcome a few problems.

They don’t turn the ball over, they hit the big pass plays, and they’re able to control games with their style, even though they don’t dominate the time of possession battle.

Ohio turns the ball over a tun, the defense has been a mess – especially against the run – and there won’t be enough of a pass rush to matter.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has played a whole lot better than its 1-7 record.

It might be one of the top under-the-radar disappointments of 2021, but they’re still battling hard. Ever since beating Akron, they’ve suffered gut punch after gut punch in three straight tough losses.

The offense, though, is doing a nice job. It’s not consistent in nay way, but Miami doesn’t have the type of offense that’s going to come out and put 50 on the board. The Bobcats should be able to keep this close throughout, if not take over if the ground attack is working.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Miami keep Ohio from throwing well?

The RedHawks aren’t allowing anything on the ground over the last month, and Ohio is coming off a 308-yard passing day from Kurtis Rourke.

Miami keeps playing tight games and finds ways to win. Ohio keeps playing tight games and manages to lose. That’s about to flip in Athens in a quirky Tuesday night game.

Ball State vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

Are the Cardinals starting to make their move?

Excuse me. Are the defending MAC champion Cardinals starting to make their move?

The dominant win over Western Michigan set the tone after the loss to Toledo, and following it up with the victory over Eastern Michigan was massive.

The passing game was terrific against the Broncos, the ground game rumbled against the Eagles, and now it all needs to work against a Miami team that can’t seem to get the season rolling.

The RedHawks haven’t won two games in a row. There aren’t enough takeaways, the offense isn’t good enough in the red zone, and the offense hasn’t been consistent. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami University Will Win

When the ground attack works Miami usually wins.

It’s all relative. Since opening the season with a loss to Cincinnati, the RedHawks are 3-0 when running for 164 yards or more – there were some passing yards to go along with the rushing production, too – but when the team can’t run, forget it.

Ball State’s run defense has been fine overall, but it allowed more than 164 rushing yards in four of the last six games and was hurt through the air in the two games when the run D rocked.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Miami just doesn’t do enough to take the ball away, and Ball State will generate two takeaways.

Both teams will sputter on the ground, but at home, the Cardinals will get just a little more out of the defense and QB Drew Plitt will come up with a sharp performance.

Miami University vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

The Zip passing game is actually working – it came up with 200 yards or more in three of the last four games.

Don’t dismiss that – Akron only threw for over 200 yards once last year and just twice in the previous 14 games before this run.

Freshman Konata Mumpfield has turned into a playmaker, coming up with a touchdown in each of his last five games and two – along with his first 100-yard day – in the win over Bowling Green.

Miami’s passing game has been okay in terms of consistency – it’s not turning the ball over – but the quarterbacks are combining to hit just 51% of their passes. However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami University Will Win

The passing yards are there. It might not always be pretty or consistent, but it’s gone past 200 yards in every game since the loss to Cincinnati.

It’s asking a lot, but Miami got to 500 yards of total offense in the two wins and it’s 0-4 when coming up with 385 or fewer. Akron has allowed over 385 yards against everyone but Bowling Green and Bryant – the two Zip wins.

Overall, Akron is miserable on third downs and the offensive front is awful when it comes to defenses out of the backfield.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Miami might not be playing like it’s supposed to, but it can’t have a problem at home against Akron is there’s any hope of making a push in the MAC race and for a bowl spot.

The season isn’t necessarily over in the RedHawks don’t win this – but they will.

The offense will be a bit more consistent and the defense will get the job done with a slew of plays in the backfield to stuff Akron on third down after third down.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Miami University vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The passing attack has been solid after struggling against Cincinnati in the season opener, but the ground attack is the difference-maker. Running against LIU was no big whoop, but controlling the ground game against Central Michigan was a big deal in last week’s 28-17 win.

Eastern Michigan is a disaster against the run.

Normally strong defensively, the Eagles have been hit for over 200 yards on the ground in three of the last four games with a mediocre Texas State the outlier.

Run the ball, get the defense into the EMU backfield, repeat.

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Miami doesn’t take the ball away.

The defense might generate plenty of pressure, but it’s not winning the turnover battles because it has just two takeaways all year.

Eastern Michigan doesn’t have a giveaway problem, but if it can come up with with two takeaways the entire tone of the game shifts.

The Eagles are great at converting on third downs, they’re not getting flagged for bad penalties, and they’re doing enough of the little things right.

And …

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Who can run better?

Eastern Michigan is 3-0 when it runs for 180 yards or more, and Miami allowed 179 rushing yards per game.

The Eagles will be more balanced than Miami, and they’ll make far fewer mistakes.

Central Michigan vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The defense has been fantastic on third downs.

It didn’t do anything to stop LSU, but Missouri, FIU, and Robert Morris combined to convert just 4-of-37 chances. The defense might be having problems against the pass, and the offense has some issues – more on that in a moment – but Miami’s O doesn’t do enough move the chains.

Central Michigan is 2-0 when running for over 200 yards, and Miami allows 211 per outing. But …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami University Will Win

For all of the good moments Central Michigan has had with the running game, the offensive line is having a nightmare of a time in pass protection.

If your defense can get behind the line once in a while, it’s going to have a good day against the Chippewas. Miami University can get behind the line.

No, the pass rush isn’t great, but there are a whole lot of tackles for loss. Statistically, the pass D is amazing because Army didn’t complete a pass in its 23-10 win last week and no one other than Cincinnati has come up with more than 180.

But …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Central Michigan passing game will work well enough to get by.

Miami isn’t steady enough offensively to keep up once the Chippewas start scoring early. The running game won’t be steady enough to control the game, and the inability to control the clock will be a big deal.

Army vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

Can Miami University stop the Army running game? Short answer … sort of.

It’s got the veteran linebackers who should be able to stay in their lanes and be coached up enough to deal with what’s coming, and the line proved against Minnesota it can hold up to and smashing style.

This group can get behind the line – it’s among the MAC’s best teams at generating tackles for loss. There should be plenty of big plays to get to the Army option before it gets started, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Army Will Win

No, really. Can Miami University stop the Army running game? Short answer … probably not.

The Army ground attack is working against everyone.

Georgia State, WKU, and UConn aren’t brick walls, but it doesn’t matter. The Black Knights were able to get the timing down over the first three games and should be able to control the game from the start. Miami University doesn’t do much in the time of possession battle, and it messes up just enough to matter.

Army doesn’t get flagged, doesn’t turn the ball over, and it holds the ball for 41 minutes a game. All of that has to change for MU to win.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Army has a weird way of getting hot early and then sputtering. WKU and UConn were both able to put up points late, but they didn’t matter.

Miami has a balanced enough offense to keep this close – it was able to throw a heck of a scare into Minnesota – but it won’t hold up in the second half as Army goes on one big long scoring drive to finally take over.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Miami University (0-2) vs LIU (0-2) Game Preview

Why LIU Will Win

The Miami University defense hasn’t done a thing so far against the run.

Granted, going against Cincinnati and Minnesota is a problem, but LIU hasn’t been awful on third downs so far and the offensive line has been okay, especially in pass protection.

MU got hit with lightning against the Bearcats and thunder against the Gophers (sorry about that), and the Sharks have to at least try banging away and hope something breaks. That didn’t exactly work against West Virginia in the 66-0 loss, but the RedHawk run D isn’t nearly as strong.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami University Will Win

This is workout time for a Miami team that gave it the old college try in a comeback effort against Minnesota, but now needs to have a little fun.

The LIU defense hasn’t been close, with nothing happening in the backfield and just one takeaway to try helping out the struggling offense.

FIU was able to run for over 300 yards on the Shark D, and FIU isn’t going to get the offense moving on anyone.

There hasn’t been much to get excited about from the Miami ground attack so far, and the passing game has been among the least efficient in college football. That all turns around here.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

LIU is a great story with a wonderful nickname and fantastic uniforms, but it’s going to be a long day against a Miami offense that needs to breakout. With Army coming up next and the MAC season to follow, this is when the season really starts.
