Former Rutgers football quarterback Cole Snyder nearing a decision after Syracuse visit

Cole Snyder, a former Rutgers quarterback, talks about his recent visit to Syracuse.

Cole Snyder took a visit to Syracuse over the weekend, with the former Rutgers football quarterback looking to wind down his recruitment since entering the transfer portal last week.

Snyder, who spent three seasons at Rutgers and joined the program as part of the 2019 recruiting class, has been outstanding at Buffalo for the past two years. In 2023, Snyder completed 54.6 percent of his passes for 2,109 yards with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Over the weekend, Snyder took a visit to Syracuse where he was reunited with [autotag]Fran Brown[/autotag]. The Orange’s new head coach was the secondary coach at Rutgers during Snyder’s last two years with the Big Ten program.

“I really enjoyed my time at ‘Cuse this weekend. The other recruits that were there were all great guys,” Snyder said on Monday.

“I spent a lot of time with Meeks (Jackson Meeks) and I feel like we could have a great connection. Being around the coaches in person just showed me what type of culture they were going to have. Super excited for ‘Cuse football – they are going to be successful soon. It’s not a rebuild it’s a reload! I can feel the energy around the program.”

Meeks is in the transfer portal after having spent the last three seasons at Georgia. Brown spent the last two years at Georgia as their safeties coach.

“Me and Jackson Meeks really connected. I love the way he plays the game and I think we could have a great connection early on,” Snyder said.

“Very familiar with this staff as well, having been in the same program as at least seven staff members. It was crazy to think about all the relationships that I already had and the familiarity around the program.”

In two seasons at Rutgers, Snyder completed 21-of-31 passes for 165 yards with a touchdown.

Snyder, who is from upstate New York, likes the direction Brown is bringing to the program.

Brown has injected some much-needed energy into the program, already landing several recruits from over the weekend’s official visits.

“It has been great so far. He expressed a ton of confidence in me which as a guy with 365 days left in college football is important to me,” Snyder said of his relationship with Brown.

“I love everything he is about and the mission he has for this program.”

Snyder also holds offers from Rice and Vanderbilt coming out of the portal.

Toledo somehow kept its touchdown dunk tank going during a snowy Halloween game

Snowy Halloween Toledo touchdown dunk tank. Snowy Halloween Toledo touchdown dunk tank!

Toledo football wasn’t about to shut down its touchdown dunk tank for a little cold weather.

Indeed, the Rockets’ Halloween game against Buffalo took place in snowy conditions, and the team scoring 21 points by early in the second quarter meant that the dunk tank was already getting a lot of work in.

This is a heck of a way to take one for the team if you’re one of the poor people who is being dunked into the surely freezing cold water.

It’s so cold that the broadcast mentioned Toledo fans only get one dunk per score before passing it off to the next person.

Hopefully for the dunk tank’s sake, Toledo would kick more field goals from here on out. Otherwise, it was going to be a real cold one for the fans out there taking the plunge.

Look, no matter how much you love a college football team, it’s next-level dedication to volunteer for the touchdown dunk tank on a night where it’s snowing.

Camellia Bowl What Happened

Buffalo was able to keep the chains moving, was up 14-6 at halftime, and pushed past in the second half with three Alex McNulty field goals to take a late lead. Cole Snyder found Justin Marshall for a 32-ard touchdown pass in the first half, Tajay Ahmed ran for a score, and McNulty was the offense from there.

– Georgia Southern couldn’t stop screwing up. It had chance after chance after chance to come up with takeaways and third down stops, but couldn’t do it. The D was able to hold firm in the second half and force field goals instead of touchdowns, but it still wasn’t enough.

– Georgia Southern QB Kyle Vantrease – a former Buffalo transfer – threw for 352 yards and two touchdown passes including a 79-yarder to Joshua Thompson on the first drive of the second half. He led the way on a late 90-yard touchdown drive to get within two, but UB was able to close it out.

Camellia Bowl What It All Means

Buffalo was crashing hard. It lost three straight and needed to slip past Akron in a rescheduled game just to get here. It came into this with a great gameplan, it got physical, and now the program has its third bowl win in four seasons. With the win, it’s a winning season in the second year under head coach Maurice Linguist. Finishing 7-6, UB has just one losing season since 2016.

This was a maddening way for Georgia Southern to end what was a strong first year under Clay Helton. It put itself in a position to win the game, but it couldn’t force the big plays or big stops defensively, and the offense couldn’t do anything to control the clock. With the loss, the program now has its second losing season in a row after three straight winning campaigns. In the nine years in the FBS it was 3-1 in bowls before this. Now it lost two of its last three.

Bowling Green comically botched a fake field goal and got so lucky it didn’t end in total disaster

SO CLOSE to being a much bigger disaster.

Bowling Green had a very rough first half Saturday in its home matchup against Buffalo, entering halftime down, 31-0. That’s not great for a conference game against the Bulls, who entered the contest at the top of the MAC East.

But perhaps the worst thing that happened to the Falcons in the first half was this horribly botched fake field goal attempt that was oh so close to ending in total disaster. Instead, it was just a mild disaster.

On 4th-and-goal on Buffalo’s 7-yard line, Bowling Green lined up to kick a 25-yard field goal with about a minute left in the first quarter. A good kick would have done little to close the gap against Buffalo’s 17-0 lead at that point.

So the Falcons opted for a fake field goal.

Kicker Jack Sauder was serving as the holder, took the snap and (badly) passed it to punter Mason Lawler. The pass was too long and out of Lawler’s reach, and when he tried to just fall on it, Buffalo’s Keyshawn Cobb scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown.

Literally the opposite of what Bowling Green envisioned for that trick play, but the Falcons got lucky as the touchdown was called back thanks to an illegal block. So, not a total disaster but still hilarious.

Buffalo Bulls Preview 2022

It wasn’t how things were supposed to go.

Buffalo was coming off a 6-1 2020 season with an appearance in the MAC Championship and a bowl win over Marshall. It was the third straight winning season and the fourth straight with at least six wins.

But just as the program was getting comfortable as one of the conference’s superpowers, head coach Lance Leipold left for Kansas, Maurice Linguist took over, and the team came up with a rough 4-8 season with four straight losses to close.

The offense still worked, the ground game was good, and the defense had a few positives even though it was a rough year without any consistency.

Linguist has a ton of work to do to build up the talent level – seven offensive starters are done – but there’s a good base on defense to work around and there are enough winnable games to expect a bounceback year.

Or, at least hope for an improvement.

Buffalo Bulls Preview 2022: Offense

The offense couldn’t impose its rushing will like it did in past seasons, but it wasn’t all that bad. The O averaged well over 400 yards per game with the ground game accounting for almost half of that.

The passing attack was hit-or-miss over the years when the team was winning – everything revolved around the ground game – but it needs to be more efficient. There has to be more happening down the field and the turnovers have to stop, but for all of the problems, UB led the MAC in third down conversions.

It all starts with the tackles. The interior of the offensive line should be fine, but the group that was among the best in the MAC in pass protection and keeping down the tackles for loss needs the transfer portal and some key backups to make a difference.

The ground game lost leading rusher Dylan McDuffie to Georgia Tech, and Kevin Marks was never able to break through with the big season expected. The attack will work around Ron Cook, a speedy kick returner who ran for 377 yards, but it needs more options and bulk.

Quarterback Kyle Vantrease is done, but the passing game isn’t starting from scratch. Senior Matt Myers adds more of a rushing element to the mix and he has the starting experience, but the offense needs more big things happening down the field. Myers just has to keep things moving.

The receiving corps gets back leading receiver Quian Williams, a former Eastern Michigan Eagle who made 63 grabs last year, and Jamari Gassett isn’t a bad No. 2 speed option.

Buffalo Bulls Preview 2022: Defense

The defense should be stronger. It didn’t come up with enough takeaways, it didn’t hold up in strange spots – it got ripped up by Bowling Green? – and running games did too much shoving around.

A nice base of six starters are back with a nice blend of MAC star power and options in the right spots, starting with …

The defensive front might be the team’s biggest strength. The line is one of the few areas on the team with plenty of depth and a good rotation. Yes, the run defense has to be better, but Daymond Williams is a good nose tackle to work everything around. He’s almost 300 pounds and should once again be among the MAC’s best interior pass rushers.

James Patterson might be the best player in the MAC. The veteran linebacker will take over everything in the 4-2-5 alignment, but the options and rotation has to fill in next to him. Shaun Dolac made plays in his first year, but the defense needs more parts to fight against the run.

The secondary got help from the transfer portal to boost up an already good situation. It’s going to take fall camp to get all five parts in place, and not having big-hitting safety Cory Gross hurts, but Marcus Fuqua should be one of the team’s leading tacklers. The safeties are fine, but the corners have to emerge.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Buffalo vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls desperately need to end their season on a high note.

It’s ben a rough run for the defense, but to pull this off and end 5-7 instead of 4-8, it’s all about controlling the clock. Buffalo has a terrific running game that averages close to 200 yards per game and converts on third down after third down.

They lead the MAC in sacks, they’re great in time of possession, and  on the flip side, Ball State doesn’t do nearly enough to get behind the line, it doesn’t control the clock, and the run D is spotty, to be nice.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Ball State Will Win

The Buffalo defense has gone bye-bye.

It struggled throughout the season and hasn’t been consistent, but just when it needed to rise up it crashed, allowing over 1,500 yards and 134 points over the last three games.

The Ball State defense hasn’t been any better lately, but the offense has the running game to point on a Bull run defense that should be a whole lot better considering the pressure it generates from the outside.

Yes, UB is great at rushing the passer, but …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The Ball State offense is good enough to give all the parts of the passing game time to work.

Both teams are having major problems in what appeared to be promising seasons, but Ball State is still alive for a bowl game. It’s not going to repeat as the MAC champion, but going to a bowl again and avoiding a losing regular season will be the extra juice it needs.

Buffalo’s defense will be a tad worse than Ball State’s
