Minnesota (0-1) vs Miami University (0-1) Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

Under PJ Fleck, Minnesota has had a strange way of playing up or down to the competition.

Yeah, the Gophers gave Ohio State a decent fight in the 45-31 loss, but that means they’re now 5-7 in their last 12 games and has a trip to Colorado next week.

Miami University got hammered by Cincinnati 49-14 last week, but the running game wasn’t awful – at least later on – and the Bearcats were almost perfect throughout.

Blow off the loss. This is a decent RedHawk team with a good enough defense to make the Gophers work, and with a receiving corps that can hit the big play if QB AJ Mayer gets a little time to work.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Minnesota Will Win

Cincinnati ran at will on the Miami defense.

The Bearcats averaged eight yards per carry with big gash after big gash, and now with Mohamed Ibrahim out for the year with an Achilles’ heel injury, this is the game to find the right rotation of backs.

The Gopher offensive line is still big and good, Treyson Potts is a slippery back who can get yards in chunks with a little room, and Tanner Morgan is a veteran passer who needs to be even sharper.

Defensively, yes, the numbers aren’t good, but the team allowed one massive play on the ground to Ohio State and did a good job the rest of the way. Miami University won’t get much going with the running game.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how quickly can Minnesota gear it up again?

It gave Ohio State a battle, but that was an emotional loss to start the season and now it’s without its star running back to work around.

Again, Minnesota has a strange way over the years of having to fight too hard  when it shouldn’t have to – the great 2019 team had struggle after struggle in non-conference play.

Miami University won’t be a speed bump, but the defense is going to struggle once Morgan gets into a midrange passing groove. Expect this to be too much of a fight until midway though the third quarter.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Cincinnati (0-0) vs Miami University (0-0) Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

Miami has a decent passing game that should at least keep pressing the Cincinnati secondary.

The receiving corps can get deep, there are plenty of options to move the work around, and the veteran quarterbacks are in place – the RedHawks split the duties last year between Brett Gabbert and AJ Mayer – who aren’t going to be fazed by the moment.

If the offense can be just okay and capitalize on its chances, the defense should be able to keep the team in the game. Ten starters return, there’s good depth to work with, and the linebackers should be able to keep UC QB Desmond Ridder from doing much on the move.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Ridder and the offense will be fine. The O will pound, the passing game will be efficient, and the goal will be to not screw things up so the defense can win the game.

Basically, Cincinnati will have Miami’s style for this, but it’ll do it a whole lot better.

The RedHawks might be great defensively, but UC gets enough talent back for new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to turn loose. There might be a slew of key replacements to make, but the Bearcats will attack from the start against a MU offensive line that won’t hold up.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

2005. That’s the list time Miami University was able to pull off a win in the rivalry, losing 14 straight in the series since then.

The RedHawks always bring the effort, and the games over the last decade-plus have been close more often than not, but this Cincinnati team is different.

Forget the lofty ranking for a moment – Cincinnati still has a whole lot of work to do on both sides of the ball and might not be razor-sharp, but it’ll be physical.

The RedHawks just won’t be able to score enough. Cincinnati will need a little while to pull away for good, but there won’t be a whole lot of drama in the second half.

2021 CFN MAC Preseason Rankings: East

1. Buffalo Bulls

Quick Take: It’s a new era of UB football under Maurice Linguist, and there’s still enough in place to at least be in the mix for the MAC Championship. The running game will still be good, the defensive back seven is among the best in the league, and overall the machine shouldn’t stop.
Buffalo Preview | Schedule

2. Kent State Golden Flashes

Quick Take: The FlashFast offense is about to be deadlier than ever. The Golden Flashes have the best quarterback in the league in Dustin Crum, the coaching staff is in a groove now, and the defense should be just a wee bit better.
Kent St Preview | Schedule

3. Miami University RedHawks

Quick Take: Defense, offensive consistency, repeat. There might not be a big-time running game, but the passing attack will be fine, the linebacking corps will be great, and the RedHawks will make a big push for the East.
MU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532453]

4. Ohio Bobcats

Quick Take: Feel more than free to put Ohio at the top of the East list – or at least shuffle it among the four best teams – with a great offensive backfield, what should be a dominant running game, and with a D that should be just good enough to hold serve.
Ohio Preview | Schedule

5. Akron Zips

Quick Take: It’s still a work in progress. Akron needs the lines to be a whole lot better, the offense has to be far more consistent, and there have to be a few things the team can rely on week after week. On the plus side, the experience is there.
Akron Preview | Schedule

6. Bowling Green Falcons

Quick Take: The offense has GOT to start working. Head coach Scot Loeffler knows how to get an O going, but it has to happen already to help overcome a defensive front that’s still going to have major issues.

2021 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Dustin Crum, Sr. Kent State

Really? The Kent State starting quarterback is getting interest from the NFL world? Yup, and that’s because 6-3, 207-pound guys who can run a fast-paced offense and can move work at the next level.

Phenomenal at the end of the 2019 season as he led the team to comeback wins and a bowl victory, he was brilliant last year hitting 74% of his throws with 12 touchdowns and two picks – to go along with 240 rushing yards and four scores – in just four games. Now he should take the FlashFast style of O to another level.

2021 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

DE Troy Hairston, Sr. Central Michigan

The MAC is full of big-time pass rushers and excellent defensive linemen who’ll put up big stats and huge plays. The best of the returning lot is a 5-11, 245-pound undersized end and oversized linebacker who’ll once again play in a hybrid role to make a whole lot of big things happen.

He was okay as a junior, but last year he took off with 42 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss in just six games. It’s going to keep on rolling on a veteran D.

Miami RedHawks College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense worked twice and Miami won, it didn’t work against Buffalo and that was the loss. It’s Miami, so the running game wasn’t special, but the offense as a whole averaged a mediocre 365 yards and 29 points per game. There might be a few key losses, but with eight starters expected back, the O should go around …

The running game? Again, it’s Miami – it hasn’t had a decent ground attack for over a decade – but it’s got a loaded backfield returning.

Leading rusher Zach Kahn is gone – he got all two of the team’s rushing scores – but No. 2 back Kevin Davis returns along 2019 741-yard, 14-touchdown back Jaylon Bester – he missed last year hurt – along with Tyre Shelton, a 587-yard back from two years ago.

All-star linemen C Danny Godlevske (Oklahoma State) and OT Tommy Doyle are gone, but it’s still a very gig, experienced group that wasn’t bad in pass protection in the three games.

Brett Gabbert and AJ Mayer split the quarterback duties. They combined to throw just one pick, but Gabbert was the more efficient and effective passing option is the better runner of the two.

The receiving corps has more than enough talent in place to keep the deep shots going. Leading target Jack Sorenson seems like he’s been around for forever, and he was great catching 18 passes for 354 yards and four scores in the three games. TE Jack Coldiron was the second-leading receiver with six catches, and all the main wideouts are back.

Miami (10-9) vs Western Michigan (4-13) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Miami University Will Win

Western Michigan’s offense has come to a dead stop, and that includes a 65-56 loss to Miami less than a month ago.

The outside shooting isn’t all that bad, but rebounding has been a struggle – especially on the offensive glass – and there’s simply no scoring punch. How bad has it been? The Broncos haven’t hit 70 in ten of their last 11 games.

On the opposite end is Miami, who might not put up a ton of points, but it it’s great from the field outstanding from three, and it doesn’t turn the ball over.

Western Michigan’s defense doesn’t force any mistakes – it’s not going to be able to manufacture easy points.

Why Western Michigan Will Win

So what do the Broncos do right?

They’re able to keep most games relatively low-scoring and within range. They’re great at clamping down on the outside shooters and for all of their rebounding problems overall, they’re not totally miserable at times on the defensive glass.

It really is all about shooting well and somehow getting to the rim. Of the four wins, three came when the team hit 48% or better from the field, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Western Michigan has only made 48% or more of its shots four times.

However, the Miami defense isn’t anything special – it has allowed four of the last give times it played to shoot 49% or better – and it has to play its fourth straight road game and sixth in its last seven dates. Western Michigan went on a brutally long run of road games, but coming back home didn’t matter in a loss to Kent State.

In an early game, Miami will be just a little bit sharper.
