Big Ten Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which Big Ten schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which Big Ten schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which Big Ten schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best Big Ten schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

Big Ten Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

14. Northwestern

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-8 in conference, 7th in Big Ten West

Basketball: 8-23 overall, 3-17 in conference, 13th in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? Despite winning two of its last three games, the Northwestern football team came up with a stunningly miserable season. The defending Big Ten West champ started 1-8 scoring 15 points or fewer seven times. It was really, really bad, and then Northwestern basketball grabbed that beer.

Like the football team, the hoops side came up with two late-season wins, but  a run of 12 straight Big Ten losses made it ugly. Two of the three conference victories came over …

13. Nebraska

Football: 5-7 overall, 3-6 in conference, 5th in Big Ten West

Basketball: 7-25 overall, 2-18 in conference, 14th in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? 17 straight Big Ten basketball losses – who loses twice to 2019-2020 Northwestern? – with a depleted team was awful, but head coach Fred Hoiberg suffering from the flu on the sidelines in the Big Ten Tournament turned a horrible season frightening.

The football team lost five of its last six games, dropping the home finale to Iowa to miss out on a bowl game and close out a second straight losing season under Scott Frost.

12. Purdue

Football: 4-8 overall, 3-6 in conference, T5th in Big Ten West

Basketball: 16-15 overall, 9-11 in conference, T10th in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Boilermakers could never get either season going. The basketball team looked like it might turn things up a few notches in early February, but it lost four straight and five of the last seven games to go the other way.

The football team played better than the 4-8 record. Decimated by injuries – and hurt by horrible performances against Nevada and Illinois – it was a struggle to get over a 2-6 start.

Maryland (21-4) vs. Northwestern (6-18) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Northwestern Will Win

Is there anything positive happening over the run of nine straight losses and 14 in the last 15 games? The Wildcats aren’t turning the ball over a whole lot, they’re being careful with their possessions, and they’re able to move the ball around relatively well looking for a decent shot.

Maryland might be caught looking ahead bit with Ohio State up next this weekend coming off the big game against Michigan State on the road. This isn’t a great-shooting team and it doesn’t force a slew of mistakes and steals. NU wants to slow this down to a halt and grind this out, but …

Why Maryland Will Win

The Northwestern defense isn’t stopping anyone from the field. It’s giving up way too many easy points, it’s not taking the ball away, and it’s absolutely miserable at winning the battle on the boards.

The Terps might not have the most consistent offense, but they’re great on the glass and they’re wonderful at clamping down on teams that struggle from the field. Northwestern isn’t going to hit enough threes – if any – to stay alive.

What’s Going To Happen

Maryland will come up with a hot start, Northwestern won’t be able to get back into the game, and this will be an easy win for the home side as it gets rebound after rebound.

The Wildcats will struggle way too much to generate points.

Maryland (19-4) vs. Nebraska (7-16) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Nebraska Will Win

So what’s going right in this eight-game losing streak?

Even with all of the problems, the Huskers don’t turn the ball over and they make a whole lot of threes. Best of all, Maryland is the only team in the Big Ten that shots worse than they do.

They’re giving up a whole lot of points,  but they’re careful with the ball and they have the potential to do just enough to get hot from the outside to make this interesting. The Terp defense is fine, but it’s hardly suffocating against good outside shooting teams. However …

[lawrence-related id=507637]

Why Maryland Will Win

Nebraska is going to get murdered on the boards.

It’s dead last in the Big Ten in rebounds, it doesn’t have any sort of inside presence, and it’s going to have a hard time going on any big scoring runs.

Maryland’s defense doesn’t hack, it doesn’t give away a whole lot of easy points, and the offense is great at attacking the rim – it’ll win the free throw battle by at least six.

What’s Going To Happen

Maryland will start out a little sleepy, and then it’ll take over in the second half as the defense starts to clamp down, the team gets every rebound, and it’ll make enough threes of its own to match up with whatever the Huskers do.

Maryland (3-8) vs. Michigan State (5-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Maryland Will Win

Michigan State’s offense isn’t working.

It’s having a huge problem on third downs, the rushing attack isn’t going anywhere, and there are way too many turnovers.

Finally, the woeful Maryland run defense might get a break.

The MSU ground game rumbled for 275 yards on Illinois, and that’s been about it. It failed to hit the 90-yard mark in four of five games before playing Rutgers, and even then the offensive line couldn’t generate a push against the bad, bad defense.

How ugly is this? MSU has failed to average more than four yards per carry eight times this year including in five of the last six games.

However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan State, run the (bleep)ing ball this week.

The Spartans have rushed for over 200 yards twice, and they ripped apart Western Michigan and Illinois in the only two games they came up with more than one touchdown run – six of the ten scores came in those two games.

Maryland has allowed 300 yards or more in three of the last four games, but that gets forgotten about thanks to an offense that hasn’t scored more than 14 points in five of the last six games.

The Terp offense is not only awful, but it’s awful in a hurry. It doesn’t allow America a whole lot of time to watch the sad.

MSU is going to be able to finally run, it’s going to control the clock for close to 40 minutes, and it’s not going to have to worry a lick about a Terp passing game that hasn’t hit 50% of its passes in the last four games and hit a new low – 7-of-21 for 57 yards – in the 54-7 loss to Nebraska.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State needs to win this to get bowl eligible. As rough as the second half of the season has been, this week the Spartans get a chance to go off on both sides of the ball.

The defense will rise up and rock a Terp offense that’s really, really, really not working, and the offense will finally be able to run the ball well enough to dominate.

Big Ten Quick Thoughts, Takes On Every Game: Week 13. Ohio State Wins Big Ten East

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 13 Big Ten game.

@PeteFiutak

Michigan State 27, Rutgers 0

It was only a win over Rutgers, but Michigan State really, really, really, really needed that. It wasn’t perfect, the running game was stuffed a bit too much and the offense stalled a bit, but Cody White went off for 11 catches for 136 yards and three scores, and it was a shutout over a team that was supposed to be shutout. The program can exhale for a moment – it hit the putt.

Rutgers just doesn’t have the offensive talent. Johnny Langan completed 8-of-20 passes for 57 yards with a pick, led the team with 49 rushing yards, and Isaiah Pacheco was held to 36 yards. It didn’t help that the Scarlet Knights were playing a team that cared.

The Spartans owned this game by more than the final score. They didn’t allow a third down conversion and held the ball for almost 38 minutes. There wasn’t any drama whatsoever.

Michigan State did what it needed to do, and now it closes out with Maryland for a shot at a sixth win and bowl eligibility. Rutgers’ season will come to a brutal but merciful end at Penn State.

Iowa 19, Illinois 10

Iowa played a typical Iowa game. It battled hard, played good run defense, and did enough to keep things moving through the air. It wasn’t easy, and it was a grind to do anything on the ground, but it was the eighth win of the season with just Nebraska to go. A shot at a ten-win campaign is still there.

The Hawkeyes couldn’t get any push up front – the Illinois D line did a nice job. Iowa ended up with just 79 rushing yards, and Nate Stanley wasn’t all that sharp, but he connected on a few bit pass plays with Ihmir Smith-Marsette catching four passes for 121 yards.

Illinois played relatively well despite only scoring ten points. The running backs didn’t get the ball enough – QB Brandon Peters led the team with 76 rushing yards – but the O averaged close to five yards per carry. The passing game didn’t cluck – Peters threw two picks – but it was an okay performance despite the final score.

It was a good fight, and now Illinois gets to go for a seventh win when it finishes up against Northwestern. If a 19-10 loss on the road to Iowa was okay, a loss of any sort to this Wildcat team would be totally unacceptable.

Big Ten Quick Thoughts, Takes On Every Game: Week 12

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 Big Ten game.

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 Big Ten game.

@PeteFiutak

Wisconsin 37, Nebraska 21

Adrian Martinez was fantastic. He was fast, decisive, and he looked like the star for the Husker offense everyone is hoping he’ll be. He threw for 220 yards and a score, ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, Dedrick Mills ran for 188 yards and a score, and Nebraska gained almost 500 yards …

And Nebraska lost by 16.

Wisconsin got shoved around too much, struggled against the Nebraska running game, and gave up too many big plays, but Jonathan Taylor ran for 204 yards and two scores, QB Jack Coan was fine, Aron Cruickshank retuned a kick for a score, and the D came through when absolutely needed.

The Badgers need to win out and get a loss from Minnesota before they play on November 30th. Nebraska has to beat both Maryland on the road and against Iowa to go bowling.

Northwestern 45, UMass 6

Leave it to Northwestern to be the only team that couldn’t hang a gajillion points on the worst defense in college football. One of the scores came on a blocked field goal.

This was the game to have a whole lot of fun with the passing game. Aidan Smith completed 7-of-13 passes for 76 yards with two interceptions. Wheeeeee!

Evan Hull?! The freshman had four carries all year for 15 yards, and he ripped through the Minutemen for 220 yards and four scores on 24 carries. The Wildcats ran for 335 yards and five scores.

It’s going to take something amazing for the Wildcats to win another game with Minnesota and at Illinois to close. 2-10 would be the worst season since going 2-9 in 1993.

NEXT: Michigan 44, Michigan State 10; Penn State 34, Indiana 27
