Ball State Cardinals College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– Offense hasn’t been an issue at Ball State over the last few years, and it certainly won’t be a problem in 2021 with ten starters expected back. The Cardinals had a nice balance, didn’t make a whole lot of mistakes, and were solid at keeping the chains moving. However, to tweak and improve …

The offensive line has to be more consistent. The running game wasn’t anything special and there were was too many sacks and tackles for loss allowed. Four starters are back, there’s decent depth, and around all-star Curtis Blackwell at one tackle, there’s enough experience to be stronger.

The ground attack never really had new Atlanta Falcon Caleb Huntley – he led the team with 437 rushing yards and six scores in just three games – and now there’s a rotation around 240-pound junior Tye Evans and 208-pound senior Will Jones. Those two combined for over 600 yards with over four yards per carry and four scores.

Drew Plitt settled the quarterback situation, going the distance as the only Cardinal to throw a pass. the veteran hit 66% of his throws for 2,164 yards and 17 touchdowns with six picks. He’s got the guys back all of his top targets returning but third-leading receiver Antwan Davis.

First Team All-MAC performer Justin Hall is a smallish, shifty target who caught 49 passes for 665 yards and four scores, 6-3 Yo’Heinz Tyler led the team with eight touchdown grabs, and Jalen McGaughy is a rising big target who averaged over 34 yards on his five grabs with three scores.

Western Michigan Broncos College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense was a blast and it’ll be every bit as strong again. It finished 16th in the nation overall averaged 480 yards per game and was ninth in scoring as it pumped out 42 points an outing. The ground attack was solid and the downfield passing game was the best in college football, but …

– Top target D’Wayne Eskridge is now a Seattle Seahawk. He averaged over 23 yards per game with eight scores, but 6-4, 185-pound all-star Jaylen Hall returns after averaging 27 yards a pop with seven scores. 5-9 speedster Skyy Moore was second on the team with 25 catches and averaged 16 yards per catch.

The receiving corps has its veteran bomber to keep things going. Kaleb Eleby was terrific in his first year at the helm hitting 65% of his passes with 18 touchdowns and two picks, and he can run a bit, too. No. 2 Nick Kargman is also back.

The offensive front that was among the best in the nation in pass protection loses Jaylon Moore to the San Francisco 49ers, but it gets back four starters around all-star left guard Mike Caliendo.

The receivers are the stars, but the Broncos have the backs, too. 223-pound junior La’Darius Jefferson ran for a team-high 624 yards and five scores, and 5-9 scooter Sean Tayler added well over six yards per carry. Fellow speedster Jaxson Kincaide is back for his super-senior season after averaging over seven yards per carry and finishing third on the team with 218 yards.

Miami RedHawks College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense worked twice and Miami won, it didn’t work against Buffalo and that was the loss. It’s Miami, so the running game wasn’t special, but the offense as a whole averaged a mediocre 365 yards and 29 points per game. There might be a few key losses, but with eight starters expected back, the O should go around …

The running game? Again, it’s Miami – it hasn’t had a decent ground attack for over a decade – but it’s got a loaded backfield returning.

Leading rusher Zach Kahn is gone – he got all two of the team’s rushing scores – but No. 2 back Kevin Davis returns along 2019 741-yard, 14-touchdown back Jaylon Bester – he missed last year hurt – along with Tyre Shelton, a 587-yard back from two years ago.

All-star linemen C Danny Godlevske (Oklahoma State) and OT Tommy Doyle are gone, but it’s still a very gig, experienced group that wasn’t bad in pass protection in the three games.

Brett Gabbert and AJ Mayer split the quarterback duties. They combined to throw just one pick, but Gabbert was the more efficient and effective passing option is the better runner of the two.

The receiving corps has more than enough talent in place to keep the deep shots going. Leading target Jack Sorenson seems like he’s been around for forever, and he was great catching 18 passes for 354 yards and four scores in the three games. TE Jack Coldiron was the second-leading receiver with six catches, and all the main wideouts are back.

Akron Zips College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense needs a whole lot more pop and it has to find one thing it can do consistently well. It worked in the win over a miserable Bowling Green team, and it put up points against Kent State mostly because the Golden Flashes wanted to get their own O back on the field to have more fun, but other than those two games, the Zips couldn’t hit 14 points in four of the other six.

There’s experience with nine starters expected back, and there are options now to work with. Step One is to find a quarterback who can just get this thing moving. Akron averaged just 281 yards and 17 points per game with a brutally inefficient passing attack.

Second-year freshman Zach Gibson had a few moments throwing for 784 yards and four scores, but he’s not a runner and he threw five picks. Kato Nelson has been around for forever – but didn’t play last year – and DJ Irons comes in from the JUCO ranks to give it a go.

Losing leading receiver Nate Stewart hurts a bit, but he only caught 17 passes for 217 yards and a score. George Quallis is a good-sized 6-2 junior who can stretch the field a bit, and Tony Grimes is a smallish speedster who caught 12 passes – that was good enough to tie for second. Sophomore Michael Mathison led the way with two scoring grabs.

The offensive line has to be far, far better. It was way too leaky in pass protection, but it should improve in a big way after starting four freshmen and with all five starters expected to return. All the O needs is a little bit of help for the decent backs.

Teon Dollard came in from the JUCO ranks and was a bright spot with 666 yards and six scores, but second-leading rusher and WR Jeremiah Knight is transferring out. On the way is Anthony Williams from Michigan State to instantly be a part of the rotation.

Ohio Bobcats College Football Preview 2021: Offense

It’s not like the Bobcats had a ton of time to work. They only played three games, but they were a strong three offensive performances. With that said, two of the games were against Akron and Bowling Green – you and a few good friends could crank up 300 yards against those two last year.

Nine starters are back for a team that you know what it’ll do. It’s Ohio. It’ll be solid, the running game will work, and the passing attack will be efficient.

– There are two excellent quarterback options who can both move. Kurtis Rourke – former Ohio star Nathan’s brother – did more with the passing game last season, but former UNLV super-recruit Armani Rogers was better for the ground attack. They’ll both get plenty of work behind a solid line that gets back four starters but loses all-star center Brett Kitrell.

The receiving corps will be more than fine. Isiah Cox is a big play threat who averaged over 20 yards per catch on his seven grabs – he led the team in 2019, too, averaging 17 yards per catch – and the rest of the group is just fine despite losing big-time playmaker Shane Hooks to Deion Sanders and Jackson State.

The tight end combination of brothers Adam and Ryan Luehrman can both play.

The running back situation is even better with the 1-2 punch of De’Montre Tuggle and O’Shaan Allison. They’re both around the same size and can each bring the burst, but Tuggle is the star of the show. The quarterbacks are a big part of the fun, too.

Kent State Golden Flashes College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The FlashFast style of offense under head coach Sean Lewis kept on rolling. The Golden Flashes led the nation in total offense averaging 607 yards per game, were No. 1 in scoring offense with 50 points per outing, and finished second in the nation in passing efficiency. Leading receiver Isaiah McKoy is gone, but everyone else is expected back, and …

Syracuse transfer Nykeim Johnson comes in after catching 88 passes in his Orange career, and all of the other top Kent State targets return starting with deep threat Ja’Shaun Poke and speedy veteran Isaac Vance. Best of all, they have their main man throwing to them.

Dustin Crum has turned into a high-octane passer – hitting 74% of his throws last season – to go along with his rushing ability. If he’s not the best player in the MAC, he’s close. It’s his job, so backup and former starter Woody Barrett is transferring.

The running game was outstanding. It finished third in the nation averaging 283 yards per game with four different players hitting the 200-yard mark in the four game season. All three of the top backs return – led by 5-6, 184-pound lightning-quick sophomore Marquez Cooper, who had a team-high five scores – and Crum is in that mix of 200-yard rushers.

Helped by the up-tempo style, the offensive line was great in pass protection and outstanding for the ground game. All five starters return around All-MAC OT Bill Kuduk and senior OG Nathan Monnin forming a solid right side.

Bowling Green College Football Preview 2021: Offense

It’s time to get this thing going already. Head coach Scot Loeffler was supposed to bring the offense, and his teams haven’t been able to get much of anything going in the first two seasons. The biggest positive? The D has been worse.

The Falcons were able to run the ball last season, but the team averaged 326 yards and 11 points per game as it struggled to keep up any sort of pace.

It starts by refurbishing the line that was one of the few positives. The interior should be fine, but OT Joe Ware is looking to transfer and C Cameron Stage is off to WKU. This was a relatively young, versatile group that should be okay with a little bit of work.

Running back Andrew Clair left for Northwestern, but leading rusher Terion Stewart is back after leading the team with 295 yards and with all four of the touchdowns scored by a running back.

– The receiving corps is undergoing an overhaul. There’s no replacing leading receiver Quintin Morris at tight end, and top two wideouts Julian Ortega-Jones (Texas State) and Noah Massey have transferred out. 6-4 redshirt freshman Tyrone Broden leads a very, very young group that has to grow up fast.

Junior Matt McDonald became the best of the quarterback options, but he only hit 44% of his passes with a touchdown and six interceptions. Enter Drew Gunther from Syracuse, a 6-3, 220-pounder who’ll get every shot right away in a crowded field.
