Missouri vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Here comes the offense.

New head coach Sonny Cumbie will get hs offense to throw and throw some more – former TCU transfer Matthew Downing and Texas Tech transfer Parker McNeil are still battling for the high-profile starting quarterback gig – with the receiving corps good enough to give the Tiger secondary problems.

The Louisiana Tech offensive line spent last year rebuilding, and now the payoff should come with a slew of potential Conference USA all-stars up front. Missouri has the talent on defense, but it has to be far better than the 2021 version. However …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Missouri Will Win

The Louisiana Tech defense has a long, long way to go to be just okay.

The offense will be fine. It might take a little bit – the Mizzou pass rush and defensive front should be a problem for the Bulldogs – but other side of the ball will be all about the pass rush.

The new Louisiana Tech coaching staff will turn everyone loose to get into the backfield, and that means the big plays should be there for the taking. As long as QB Brady Cook gets a little bit of time, he’s got the dangerous playmakers who should get down the field.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana Tech has the parts and experience in place to make this interesting. If the passing game clicks right away, look out.

This might not be the close call the Bulldog 35-34 loss to Mississippi State game to open last year turned out to be, but everyone will be entertained.

The Mizzou lines should be able to do enough to force a win with two good scoring drives in the second half and two big defensive stops, but it’s going to be more of a fight than the SEC side might like.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Preview 2022

Now we get to see what the master coordinator can do running his own show.

Sonny Cumbie did what he could last year at Texas Tech, stepping in for the fired Matt Wells late in the season and did enough to lead the way to a bowl appearance and win. Now he gets his first full-time head coaching gig, and now Louisiana Tech is going to have a whole lot of fun.

At least the offense is going to be a whole lot of fun.

It might take a little while for the high-octane passing style to find its groove, but in a rebuilding year Louisiana Tech took its lumps at several positions and now has enough veterans and good players to build around to make this all go.

There hasn’t been a conference championship since 2011, just that one since 2001, and just those two since 1984. There was success over the years under Skip Holtz, but the program couldn’t get over the hump even though it got to two Conference USA championship games.

How do you turn around a 3-9 team fast? You crank up the pressure on both sides of the ball.

The offense is going to attack, the defense is going to attack, and this is going to be one of those teams that makes everyone else in the conference worry.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Preview 2022: Offense

Again, 2021 was supposed to be a bit of a rebuilding year, but it wasn’t supposed to be so much of a struggle. The defense was the bigger problem, but the offense didn’t consistently do enough to help the cause.

The O got relatively decent blocking, but the running game wasn’t good enough, the passing attack wasn’t efficient enough, and there were WAY too many turnovers. There are going to be changes, but first …

It would help if the Bulldogs had a quarterback who was ready to be THE GUY. Parker McNeil is a big bomber who started at Troy and spent last year as a backup at Texas Tech – Cumbie knows what he can do.

Former Georgia Bulldog and TCU Horned Frog Matthew Downing at least has a wee bit of experience. Andrew Brister – Bubby’s kid – is on the roster. Someone has to grab the gig in fall camp.

The quarterback situation might be up in the air, but the receivers are there. Smoke Harris is a 5-6 baller who led the way with 71 catches and six scores, Tre Harris is a 6-2 deep threat who caught 41 passes, and Griffin Herbert is a good veteran who fits the new attack.

The offensive line is a plus. The all-star combination of Joshua Mote at one guard spot and Abraham Delfin at center is a great place to start in the interior, and Dakota White is a good-looking tackle on one side.

The passing game might be the star of the offense, and leading rusher Marcus Williams is done, but Greg Garner should be solid with more work and former Vanderbilt transfer Keyon Henry-Brooks should be more of a factor.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Preview 2022: Defense

The defense might need to go several miles to merely be okay, but at least this bunch will be turned loose to try to make a whole lot of big plays. New defensive coordinator Scott Power comes in from Stephen F. Austin where his defense lived behind the line and came up with a whole lot of takeaways.

Experience is going to mean something here – and there’s all-star power to work around – from a group that was 106th in the nation in total defense 114th in scoring D.

There wasn’t enough of a pass rush last season, but again, the new coaching staff is going to go out of its way to make sure the D gets into the backfield. Leading sacker Ben Bell might be in the transfer portal, but he only came up with 3.5 sacks.

301-pound Keivie Rose is a good one on the nose, Mykol Clark earned all-star honors at one end, and the back seven is going to help make big things happen, too, starting with …

Linebacker Tyler Grubbs led the team in tackles and tackles for loss. He’s the best of the bunch with new parts filling in for second-leading tackler Trey Baldwin and the speedy Ezekiel Barnett.

The secondary has a good playmaker in safety BeeJay Williamson and a returning starter in corner Cedric Woods. Expect more out of this group if the pass rush really does rise up.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Louisiana Tech vs Rice Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Louisiana Tech is about to enter a new era after this, but head coach Skip Holtz gets one more game before moving on to other opportunities – whatever they might be.

Losing six of the last seven games was a problem. However, the team was close in fights against NC State and Old Dominion. Now it gets a shot to end its season on a high note against a Rice team that doesn’t do much defensively, has big turnover problems, and won’t get much pressure in the backfield.

Louisiana Tech’s line might not do much for the running game, but it’s not bad at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Rice Will Win

Louisiana Tech is one of those teams that can’t seem to create its own breaks.

It beat Charlotte a few weeks ago, and then it turned the ball over five times in the loss to a horrible Southern Miss team.

Rice has a steady enough passing game to keep things moving and control the clock.

Louisiana Tech doesn’t do anything to control much and the defense gives up a whole lot of points considering it’s not that awful at generating third down stops.

Rice should be able to crank up at least 200 passing yards, hold the ball for close to 35 minutes, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Holtz will go out with a win.

You are what your record says you are, but Louisiana Tech also hasn’t had a whole ton of breaks.

The Rice defense will be balanced, and it’ll seem like it always has the ball, but the Bulldogs will come up with three takeaways and capitalize on them all to end the season with something positive.

Southern Miss vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Can Southern Miss finally get any offense going?

It has a nightmare of a time on third downs, no one gives up more plays in the backfield, and it’s the worst attack in the nation overall, averaging just 246 yards per game whether they need them or not.

However, Louisiana Tech’s defense will give up yards.

UAB ran all over the Bulldogs, Charlotte threw for 448, and overall the defense is among the worst in the country. Part of the reason will mean a huge break for the Southern Miss O line …

Louisiana Tech struggles to get into the backfield.

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Oh yeah, again, Southern Miss has the worst offense in college football, and it’s not getting any better.

It hasn’t hit 260 yards in any of the last five games, the passing attack isn’t doing anything down the field, and worst of all there are lots and lots and lots of turnovers.

The Golden Eagles have to press, and that leads to a whole slew of problems. They’ve given the ball away 17 times in the last six games.

Louisiana Tech’s defense might be awful, but it’s happy to take the ball away.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a rough, rough year for both teams.

They’ve both been wildly disappointing, and they’re both going to end up with a losing campaign, but Southern Miss really, really can’t get the offense going.

Even with QB Austin Kendall out with a back injury last week, Aaron Allen was able to stop in and throw for 324 yards. The team will find offensive production from somewhere, Southern Miss won’t.

Charlotte vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

It’s been a rocky and inconsistent season, but the 49ers are a win away from getting bowl eligible.

The passing game has been good enough to carry a spotty running game. Getting to 200 yards through the air doesn’t guarantee anything with this team, but it saved the day in the win over Rice last week, and this week it should rip apart a Louisiana Tech secondary that can’t stop anyone from throwing well.

Charlotte doesn’t have to bomb away. It’s great at controlling the clock, and Louisiana Tech isn’t – expect the 49ers to have the ball for well over 35 minutes.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Throw, throw, and throw some more.

The running game hasn’t shown up and the passing attack hasn’t been great, but it can hit 300 yards – it did it three times this year and should be able to get to at least 250.

The Charlotte defense doesn’t do enough in the secondary and it’s not always a rock at getting off the field. It’s allowing 225 passing yards or more in each of the last four games, getting rocked by FIU for 466 and by WKU for close to 400.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte’s about to lock in a bowl game.

Louisiana Tech doesn’t run well enough, but it’s able to take the ball away a little bit. It’ll come up with two takeaways to keep the game close, and the offense will be balanced against a mediocre 49er defense, but it won’t be enough.

You beat Charlotte by running, and the Bulldogs won’t be able to do it.

Charlotte is 5-0 when scoring 31 points or more, and 0-4 when it doesn’t. Louisiana Tech allows 34 points per game.
