Sheldon Richardson really hopes Mason Rudolph starts for the Steelers in Week 13

The look on Richardson’s face when he’s asked why he wants Rudolph to play is one of the most honest–and hilarious–expressions you’ll ever see from an NFL player.

Count Browns defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson among those who really want to see Mason Rudolph back at the helm of the Pittsburgh Steelers when the two teams meet in Week 13. Richardson gave a classic answer when asked about it after the Browns’ win over the Miami Dolphins.

While Cleveland was pounding Miami, Rudolph got benched after his poor play led to the Steelers trailing the winless Cincinnati Bengals. He was replaced by Devlin Hodges, who quickly rallied Pittsburgh to a win. That was a hot topic among the Cleveland media in the locker room and a question posed to Richardson.

After initially dismissing the question, the big defensive lineman returns to it quickly.

“I hope he plays, I hope he plays,” he says.

He’s asked the natural follow-up question — why?

“Did you see him play last game?”, Richardson deadpans incredulously.

Joe Schobert playing like he deserves a big new contract

Joe Schobert is the Browns most valuable pending free agent and GM John Dorsey is only seeing the price tag rise with Schobert’s great play

Joe Schobert is the Browns’ most prominent pending free agent. Based on how he’s played the last two weeks, the price tag is only rising for Cleveland’s top linebacker.

Schobert picked off two passes against the Miami Dolphins in the Browns’ 41-24 romp. It was the second game in a row where No. 53 secured two INTs, both convincing victories.

Schobert was the best player on the field against Pittsburgh in Week 11. Not only that, he was the best defensive player on any field in the NFL that week, according to Pro Football Focus grading. He followed that up with another impressive outing against the Dolphins, with five tackles and the two INTs among his four total passes defended.

His impact in the passing game from the linebacker position is exceedingly rare. How rare, you ask?

He did it against Miami with the line in front of him decimated, missing three starters due to a combination of injury and suspension. For most of the Dolphins game, he played with multiple rookies around him.

The Browns recently paid center JC Tretter with a nice contract extension. Tretter was deserving and happy to remain in Cleveland. Now it’s time for GM John Dorsey to do the same with Schobert while the price tag is still affordable. If he keeps playing the way he has the past few weeks, other teams will be chomping at the bit to give Schobert whatever he wants.

Highlight: Kareem Hunt scores his 1st TD for the Browns

Highlight: Kareem Hunt scores his 1st TD for the Browns to put Cleveland up 28-0

Kareem Hunt has scored his first touchdown as a member of the Cleveland Browns. The hometown running back raced in around right end from the Miami 6-yard line to push the Browns up over the Dolphins, 28-0 after the conversion.

Hunt scored on his fifth carry of the game. It’s his third game with the Browns since he returned from his 8-game suspension, and all of the games have been at home.

The Browns blocked this one well, but Hunt’s acceleration after opting to bounce the run outside is what leads to the touchdown.

Browns inactives for Week 12 show impact of injuries and suspensions

Freshly promoted from the practice squad, Brandin Bryant and Porter Gustin are both active for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

Because the defensive line is so depleted due to Larry Ogunjobi’s suspension and Olivier Vernon’s injury, the inactive list shifted several other positions into scramble mode. Depth is at a premium for the defensive front.

Dolphins final injury report: Miami comes to Cleveland healthy

CB Ken Webster is doubtful, DE Taco Charlton is questionable after Friday’s practice

The Miami Dolphins have several key players already out for the season, but the roster they bring to FirstEnergy Stadium to play the Cleveland Browns in Week 12 is pretty healthy.

None of the 53 players on the Dolphins’ active roster will miss the game due to injury. The Dolphins have just two players with any injury designation for Sunday’s game.

Defensive end Taco Charlton is questionable with an elbow injury. He was a limited participant in practices all week. Cornerback Ken Webster was also limited throughout the week, and he is listed as doubtful by the Dolphins.

Starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is on the injury list with shoulder and forearm issues, but he will play after being a full participant in Friday’s practice.

Nick Chubb sees ‘the sky’s the limit’ for he and Kareem Hunt together

Chubb has 47 carries for 208 yards in the two games with Hunt back in the lineup

Nick Chubb is typically a man of few words. The Browns running back isn’t one to give juicy quips or soundbites, unlike several of his more celebrated teammates in Cleveland.

So when he speaks confidently about what he’s seeing or thinking, it’s worth paying attention. And Chubb is feeling really good about how he and Kareem Hunt are working together in the Browns backfield.

“Yeah, I think so. We are just getting started like you said. The sky is the limit with what we can do with us in the backfield and us on the field at the same time. I just look forward to each week going out there and playing with another great player.”

Chubb has 47 carries for 208 yards in the two games with Hunt back in the lineup. Hunt has just 10 carries for 42 yards but has made a huge mark as a receiver, catching 13 passes for 90 yards. He’s also proven a very adept blocker, both for Chubb and in pass protection.

They are still sorting out the exact workload, but Chubb likes what he’s seen so far.

“We have only played two games with it so I am not sure,” Chubb said this week. “I know Pittsburgh definitely schemed for it and did some good things against it, but as far as we know, we want to keep playing.”

Brandin Bryant: What the Browns are getting in their new DT

Breaking down new Browns DT Brandin Bryant and what he offers Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns are experiencing issues along their defensive line and some of it is the result of injuries and some of it is the result of suspensions, but the defensive front has transformed from a strength to a potential liability. Due to the abundance of questions marks and lack of depth, the Browns have brought in reinforcements and below is a brief explanation of what the newly acquired Brandin Bryant has done and can do.

Height: 6-2

Weight: 289 pounds

Previous Team: Montreal Alouettes (CFL)

Bryant went undrafted in 2016 after having an unspectacular career at Florida Atlantic and wound up with the Seattle Seahawks. He has a fairly decent preseason with Seattle, but failed to make the final roster. The New York Jets snagged Bryant and placed him on their practice squad and he actually saw some time on their active roster during his rookie campaign. Bryant’s sophomore season was even less eventful as he was hurt during the preseason, landed on IR and was released from the IR.

After failing to land in the NFL, Bryant went up North in 2018 and played ten games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was extremely successful, earning more and more playing time as the season went on and even tallied two sacks. By the end of the season, Bryant was facing double teams consistently. Bryant started 2019 with the Montreal Alouettes, but found his way to Cleveland in August and was relegated to the practice squad until this week.

Despite his less than ideal size, Bryant is better against the run than the pass and it is largely due to his strength and ability to anchor. Bryant has shown flashes of being a solid depth piece and shows superb quickness and solid hustle to chase after the play, but what really makes him a great fit for Cleveland is his attitude and work ethic. Bryant was noted as one of the more engaged and positive players during his days in Winnipeg.

Despite Bryant showing a few flashes here and there, they are not consistent enough to be the expectation. Bryant lacks the ideal size NFL teams want on the interior and at one point weighed over 300 pounds to better fit that role, but he sacrificed all of his quickness for the weight game and at that point was a complete liability when on the field.

Bryant looks like a brief solution to the defensive line issues and someone who will likely not be on the team once everyone returns, but this is one of the more intriguing mid-season acquisitions. It will be extremely interesting to see how Bryant plays now that he has transformed his game since his last NFL stint. Bryant is back to weighing in the 280-pound range and did a great job of chasing down plays in the CFL. Perhaps he can show he has learned a thing a two from his days up North.

Jarvis Landry: almost like NFL is ‘deliberately trying to mess’ with Browns

Jarvis Landry says it feels like the NFL is ‘deliberately trying to mess’ with the Browns lately

Myles Garrett is lost for the rest of the 2019 season–at minimum. Larry Ogunjobi will miss Week 12 with his suspension. Neither of their appeals to the NFL was successful.

Meanwhile, the Steelers involved in last Thursday’s brawl at the end of the Browns got off with relative slaps on the wrist. Maurkice Pouncey had his suspension reduced from three games to two despite him landing at least seven punches and two kicks on Garrett in the end zone. The instigating force of the melee, Mason Rudolph, wasn’t suspended at all.

Browns fans can be forgiven for thinking the NFL is against them. The Browns players feel it, too. Take wideout Jarvis Landry’s words for it.

Landry feels like the NFL is “deliberately trying to mess with Cleveland,” during his post-practice meeting with the members of the media in Berea.

Browns promote Brandin Bryant, Porter Gustin from the practice squad

Browns promote Brandin Bryant, Porter Gustin from the practice squad in the wake of injuries and suspensions

Desperate for healthy and available bodies along the defensive line for Week 12, the Cleveland Browns promoted two defenders from the practice squad on Friday. Tackle Brandin Bryant and EDGE Porter Gustin are now on the active 53-man roster.

They fill roster spots vacant due to the suspensions of Myles Garrett and Larry Ogunjobi. With EDGE Olivier Vernon also ruled out with his ongoing knee injury, the Browns are missing three of the four regular starters on the defensive line.

Bryant has been with the practice squad all season. He has previous experience with a handful of NFL teams as well as in the CFL. Gustin was signed to the practice squad following the trade of Genard Avery to the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s an undrafted rookie from USC who has primarily played outside linebacker in his career.
