2022 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Lew Nichols, Soph. Central Michigan

Coming off a strong 2020 averaging close to seven yards per carry with over 500 rushing yards, he was all but unstoppable in 2021.

The 5-10, 220-pounder led the nation with 1,848 rushing yards and over 142 per game with 16 rushing scores and two receiving touchdowns. Steady, he came up with over 130 yards in each of the last eight games, and once again he’s going to be the featured star of the attack.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jamal Hines, Sr. Toledo

The three-time All-MAC defender – First Team last season – is a true hybrid who can do a little of everything right. He’s an outside linebacker, but he’s really an edge rushing defensive end who’ll live behind the line for stretches.

The 6-3, 250-pounder made 88 tackles with ten sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and broke up eight passes. With all his experience and all his skill, he’s about to be an all-star gamewrecker again.

It’s the MAC. It’s the conference where worst-to-first is the norm, with 2020 winless Northern Illinois winning the MAC championship in 2021, everyone can beat anyone else, and Toledo will end up somewhere in the middle of it all.

It’s about as settled as the league has been in a long time with the strength still in the West, Buffalo about to be better in the East, and with Akron and Bowling Green still questionable.

Again, though, it’s the MAC. The Zips or Falcons could end up in Detroit in January playing for the title.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Results So Far ATS: 85-67-2

One massive miscalculation later …

I blame missing EVERYTHING against the spread during an epically bad Saturday on the stress and strain of having to scramble to find ESPN after the YouTube TV/Disney kerfuffle, and …

I can’t blame this multi-billion conglomerates. It was all my fault for totally whiffing on my belief that Conference USA was going to get rim-rocked this bowl season – except, of course, for my pick of Marshall to cover against Louisiana. (It didn’t.)

Picking bowl games takes a different skill set from the regular season. Logic, reason, and normal rules don’t always apply – hello, Jackson State and BYU.

So I’m done with you, Conference USA. You win.

I’m staying away from the against the spread calls of Old Dominion vs Tulsa in the Myrtle Beach Bowl (I like Tulsa -9, of course), UTSA vs San Diego State in Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl (I like SDSU -2.5, of course), and Miami University vs North Texas in the Frisco Football Classic (I like MU, of course).

I always stick with my picks, I take my beating, and then I move on. But there were things that have gone the right was so far.

The point totals went just fine over the first several games, so I’m mostly going with those for these bowls during the week before Christmas.

Pray for me.

5. Missouri vs Army: Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl

LINE Army -4
ATS PICK Missouri

Oh, I am well aware that you pick against Army at your own risk.

I’m an adult, I take responsibility for my own actions, and I will almost always take my chances with SEC team over a Group of Five-level team.

Especially if that SEC team is getting points.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on San Diego State and its amazing defense in the 2017 Armed Forces Bowl – and then Army won.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on Houston in what should’ve been an easy in in the 2018 Armed Forces Bowl – and then Army won 70-14.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on West Virginia against the spread in the 2020 Liberty Bowl – and Army lost, but only by three.

Army is 4-1 in its last five bowl games from 2010 on, but there’s a strange part to that. None of the four bowl wins were against Power Five programs, and Army didn’t actually beat West Virginia last year.

In fact, Army hasn’t beaten a Power Five program since the win over Duke in 2017. Before that you have to go back to a 2012 win over Boston College.

I’m fully aware – and love – what Army does, and I know bowls go against what we all believe in our core to be true, but you’re getting points here. You’re not even asking the Power Five team to win big.

Kent State vs Wyoming Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Preview

Can Kent State drag Wyoming out on the dance floor? In Wyoming’s perfect world, it runs, controls the clock, relies on the defense, and manages to come up with just enough big defensive plays to own this from the start.

However, it’s had more than its share of shootouts this year. When the running game gets working – it ran for over 360 yards in two of the last four games – it can be almost as exciting as Kent State.

They call it the FlashFast style of offense. Kent State wants to go, go, go, keep defenses on their heels, and make teams feel like they have to keep pressing to make up for the scoring run that’s coning.

– Kent State might be coming off a disappointing MAC Championship loss to Northern Illinois – the Huskies dominated the time of possession battle – but when this is all working, the running game rips off yards in chunks, the passing attack hits big plays, and good games turn into up-and-down firefights once the takeaways start coming from the defense.

There’s a consistency problem for both teams. Kent State might like to play fast, but sometimes the other side is able to keep up, and then there’s an issue. The defense allowed 41 points or more six times.

Wyoming might have done everything right offensively in the bowl-sealing win over eventual Mountain West champion Utah State, and then the next week nothing worked against Hawaii.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

MAC Championship: Kent State vs Northern Illinois Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Kent State offense is going to do the Kent State offense thing.

It’s the No. 1 offense in the MAC – averaging 490 yards per game – with one of its most impressive performances coming in the 52-47 win over Northern Illinois in early November.

The FlashFast style goes a million miles per hour – time of possession means nothing to this team – with a tremendous balance and always at peak efficiency.

In the first go-round against the Huskies, the Golden Flashes came up with 360 rushing yards, and 322 yards through the air, and it all worked.

Northern Illinois does a whole lot of things right, but it doesn’t come up with takeaways – it’s dead last in America with just one pick – and Kent State is among the best teams going in turnover margin. As frenetic as this attack is, it doesn’t screw up.

Kent State has turned it over just ten times this season. It’s 1-5 when giving the ball away – eight of the ten giveaways game in the five losses – and it didn’t turn the ball over in any of the wins until the key victory over Miami University in the regular season finale to get here.

College Football Expert Picks, Championship Week

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

The Kent State defense is going to do the Kent State defense thing.

The Golden Flashes almost play defense like they want the other side to score just so the offense can get the ball back faster.

Kent State took Northern Illinois totally out of its game, and it still almost won.

In a perfect Huskie world it runs, runs some more, controls the game, and almost none of that happened in the first meeting with Rocky Lombardi throwing for 532 yards and three touchdowns.  However, NIU was still able to control the clock – keeping it for over 35 minutes.

Kent State just doesn’t stop the run. It allowed over 300 yards three times and over 200 yards to other times – it’s 1-4 when giving up 200 yards or more. Northern Illinois ran for 131 yards the first time around, and it’s about to pound up in this.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

What’s Going To Happen

It would be better for Northern Illinois to play outside in the elements.

Kent State has shown it can rock on offense no matter what, but inside at Ford Field it’s going to be just a half-click quicker.

It’s all about which defense can hold serve, and Northern Illinois just doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush and doesn’t take the ball away.

They won’t combine for 1,345 yards of total O and 99 points like they did the first time around, but they won’t be far off.

Kent State vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

It’s not as easy as stopping Kent State by stopping the run, but Miami University has the ability to hold its own for long stretches.

The RedHawks lead the MAC in run defense, the pass rush is good enough to get into the backfield and slow things down before they get started, and just as importantly, they have a passing game that can potentially keep up.

There was a strange brain-cramp against Ohio a few weeks ago, but other than that, Miami has been rolling on the way to being one step away from playing for the MAC title.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Kent State Will Win

Kent State has a defense now?

The offense is still the star – third in the nation in rushing and No. 1 in the MAC overall – but it stuffed Akron last week in a 38-0 win.

Yeah, it’s Akron, but considering the defense-optional nature of the team throughout the year, it’s a step.

Miami University has an offense, but it’s impossible to keep up the pace with the Golden Flashes when everything starts working.

The running game cranked up 410 rushing yards on the Zips just a few weeks after running for 360 in a win over Northern Illinois, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

It’s one game to see who plays Northern Illinois for the MAC Championship next week.

Miami will try to balance things out, but it doesn’t control the clock enough to grind out long drives. What it can do is bomb away deep and hit the big plays to make this a back-and-forth fight.

Who’s going to blink first? Kent State leads then nation in turnovers margin. Miami doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, but it’ll give up the one key play to be enough in a fabulous game.

Kent State vs Akron Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

This matters for bowl eligibility.

It’s all about next week against Miami University no matter what – the winner ends up taking the East and going to the MAC Championship – but the Golden Flashes aren’t going to want to worry about whether or not they’ll need that to get to a swag bag game in some exotic locale.

The FlashFast style of offense continues to destroy everything in its path, leading the MAC in total offense, rushing offense, and leading the nation in turnover margin. This team can turn the lights out in a hurry with its attack going against an Akron defense that doesn’t stop anything, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Akron Will Win

The Kent State defense has been miserable.

It gives up close to 500 yards per game, it can’t stop anyone’s running game, and it’s even worse against the pass, allowing close to 300 yards an outing. Akron might be struggling overall, but the passing game has clicked with over 300 yards in each of the last two games.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Akron interim head coach Oscar Rodriguez Jr. might not have a win, but the offense hasn’t been that bad. It’ll crank things up at home with one of its best performances of the year, but it won’t matter.

The Akron D has allowed 425 yards or more in each of the last four games and in six of the last seven, and it’s about to get hit for close to 600 yards.
