Kent State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

No one’s stopping this offense.

It might not be great on third downs, and the offensive line gives up a whole lot of plays behind the line, but the yards and points don’t stop.

The MAC East race isn’t over – it still has to get past Miami University if the RedHawks win this week against Buffalo – but at least the Golden Flashes are close. It’s coming from QB Dustin Crum and an attack that just ripped through Northern Illinois for close to 700 yards.

This team moves fast, fast, fast, with the balance to figure out how to roll no matter what defenses try to do. Central Michigan has a bit-time offense with the best passing attack in the MAC, but the defense gives up a whole lot of yards.

Can the Chippewas keep up the pace? Kent State will put up close to 500 yards. Get there, CMU. And …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewa offense can hang.

This might not be the dangerous all-around O that Kent State brings, but the scoring punch has been there over the past few weeks – helped by a few big punt returns for scores against Western Michigan from Kalil Pimpleton – with Daniel Richardson a sure thing for 200 yards or more through the air.

The Kent State secondary has been getting crushed, allowing close to 1,200 yards over the last three games including 532 in the win over Northern Illinois. Combine that with a whole lot of Golden Flash penalties, and Central Michigan should have more than enough chances to keep on scoring – and to hold serve once in a while – at home.

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready to have a whole lot of fun, because Kent State games are always a blast.

The Golden Flashes manage to come up with wins even though they give up a bazillion yards – that’s the cost of doing business.

However, Central Michigan will bomb away and have one of its better games on the ground, but it’ll be an up-and-down fight that will end with a big late scoring drive.

Kent State doesn’t turn the ball over, but Central Michigan’s offense won’t need the help.

Northern Illinois vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

So how can Northern Illinois stop the high-powered Kent State attack that goes 100 miles per hour?

Slowwwwwwwwww it down.

Duh, that’s what everyone tries to do, but Northern Illinois can actually do it.

Western Michigan isn’t necessarily an offensive juggernaut. It comes up with a whole lot of yards but not a lot of points – it hung 64 on Kent State. And why?

It had the ball for 37:41 and rolled up 648 yards of total offense. It was able to do what it does better, only slower.

Northern Illinois can keep the ball for close to 34 minutes per game, and it does it with a pounding ground game behind an offensive line that’s the best in the MAC.

The Huskies will get off the bus with 250 rushing yards against the Kent State D. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Kent State Will Win

Kent State is used to it.

It’s more than happy to give the offense some rest so it can go on a sprint.

QB Dustin Crum has been running this offense for forever and doesn’t screw up – he threw two picks in the opener against Texas A&M and hasn’t given one away since.

The defense might not be anything special, but it’s amazing at generating takeaways – 19 on the year with two or more in six of the eight games – and again, Crum and company don’t turn it over.

Kent Stat leads the nation in turnover margin, it’ll be +2 against the Huskies, and it should be able to answer long scoring drives with fast, efficient ones. It all comes down to …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Kent State defense ever get off the field if it’s not forcing takeaways?

Northern Illinois does a whole lot of grinding, but it doesn’t convert a whole lot of third down tries. That won’t be too much of an issue against a defense that allowed 12 rushing touchdowns in the last three games and three, 300-yard rushing days.

Northern Illinois won’t win the MAC West with this, but it’ll come very, very close. Kent State will still be okay with the tough loss – it’ll almost certainly meet the Huskies again in a few weeks for the MAC title.

Kent State vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flashes got through the rough part of the early schedule – all road losses to Power Five teams – and now the offense is rolling against the MAC.

2-0 in league play, and coming off a 48-38 win over Buffalo with 633 yards of total offense, the attack can do a little of everything.

Western Michigan has the attack that can keep up, but it clunked against Ball State thanks to four turnovers and no takeaways. Overall, the Broncos aren’t bad when it comes to turnover margin, but Kent State is third in the nation with 16 takeaways and just four mistakes.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Western Michigan Will Win

The Broncos are far better than they showed against Ball State.

The offense was fine against the Cardinals but it kept screwing up and giving the ball away. The passing attack has been consistently good, there’s enough of a ground attack to balance things out, and in this, the key will be simply keeping the chains moving.

Kent State – by its FlashFast design – likes to go really, really quickly. The yards pile up, but the O never has the ball. Western Michigan is third in the nation in time of possession – it’ll likely have the offense on the field for close to 40 minutes.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Broncos might have lost to Ball State and it has a whole lot of work ahead, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing if this turned out to be the matchup for the MAC Championship several weeks from now.

The Western Michigan offense has the ability to move the ball in a variety of ways, but it’s going to be the defense that pulls this off. It allowed more than 75 rushing yards once over the last five games – it’s not going to get gouged.

The turnovers from the Ball State game will stop, the offense will be balanced, and the time of possession different will matter.

Bowling Green vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The offense didn’t work, there wasn’t any running game, and it’s been a grind all year. And …

Bowling Green 14, Minnesota 10.

It’s impossible to overstate just what that win might mean for the program, the Scot Loeffler era, and for a season that’s now shockingly 2-2 for a team that was expected to do next to nothing.

It’s the defensive side that’s getting it done, with a fantastic pass rush, a secondary that’s holding down, and nine takeaways in four games to make up for the other side of the ball.

Kent State has a great rushing attack, but so does Minnesota, and the Falcons pulled out a win. But …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Kent State Will Win

Yeah, the Bowling Green offense remains an issue.

It was able to run for 118 yards against Murray State, and in the other three games combined it came up with 63. There might be a bit of a passing attack, but the ground game is the worst in college football, the O is the worst in the nation on third downs, and the offense has no prayer of keeping up the pace if the Golden Flashes go off.

Kent State is 1-3, but those losses are on the road to Maryland, Iowa, and Texas A&M. Even so, the ground game for the FlashFast offense is still the best among all MAC teams so far.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the flip.

Kent State has the lousy record because of the schedule, but the explosion starts this week. Bowling Green might be fired up after the stunner against the Gophers, but it’s about to crash back to earth very, very hard.

Maryland vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The offense is still fun.

It’s not really fair to look for anything negative about a Kent State team that had to run into the wall against Texas A&M and Iowa on the road. When it got someone more its own speed, it destroyed VMI.

The running game actually worked against A&M, and Iowa’s defense is Iowa’s defense, but now it goes against a Terp D that hasn’t been pushed all that much.

The Maryland pass defense hasn’t been bad, and the 153 yards allowed on the ground to Illinois was a season most. Now Kent State is going to go fast, fast, fast.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Maryland Will Win

How are the Terps 3-0?

There’s a win over Howard to help the cause, but the defense really is playing well – give credit for the wins over West Virginia and Illinois. The pass rush has been strong, Kent State can’t keep defenses out of the backfield, and the Terps will win their share of battles.

That, and QB Taulia Tagovailoa has been magnificent.

Nearly perfect, he’s hit 76% of his throws with seven touchdowns, no picks, and he’s keeping the offense moving. It hasn’t always been smooth – it took fights to get by the big boys on the slate so far – but the consistency is finally there.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t just dismiss Kent State quite yet.

At some point, Maryland is going to go back to being Maryland … right?

We’ve seen this before. The Terps look good, we all get excited, and then out of nowhere comes a total clunker.

But the Maryland O will still be solid. It’ll be fine through the air, the defense will do enough on third downs to get off the field, and the pace of the Golden Flash attack will mean a lopsided time of possession problem for the MAC side.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Iowa (2-0) vs Kent State (1-1) Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

Okay, Iowa. You think your defense is really that awesome? Get ready for the FlashFast Kent State offense that leads the nation in rushing.

Even though the Golden Flashes were rocked by Texas A&M in the opener, they still ran for over 200 yards averaging over five yards per carry. Yeah, VMI doesn’t have Iowa’s defense, but running for almost 500 yards and averaging eight yards per carry with seven touchdowns is still pretty good.

On the other side, lost in all the Iowa love and fun is an offense that’s not really working.

Oh sure, there have been a few home runs, but the passing game is last among Big Ten teams after two games, the O is awful on third downs, and there aren’t a lot of big plays when Spencer Petras does throw the ball. But …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa Will Win

There’s a bit of a reason Iowa isn’t bombing away. It doesn’t have to.

The defense has seven takeaways in the first two games, the defense is stuffing the run allowing just 164 yards so far – it’s flying all over the place like it has two extra guys on the field.

There’s no reason to take any major chances, but this might be the game to give it a shot just to see if the offense can start to push things down the field. Along the way, keep handing it off to Tyler Goodson and let him take over.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Iowa defensive front will swarm all over Kent State QB Dustin Crum and keep the ground game from ripping off the big plays it’s used to.

On the other side, hand off to Goodson, repeat. Kent State’s defensive front gave up over 300 yards on the ground to Texas A&M, and it’s about to get hit for way over five yards per carry to the Hawkeyes.

Run, get more great play out of the defense, and it’s on to Colorado State.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Kent State (0-1) vs VMI (1-0) Game Preview

Why VMI Will Win

The VMI offense got hot early and closed late in the 45-24 win over Davidson, and now it brings the balanced attack to keep up against high-octane Golden Flash offense.

The Keydets should be able to throw effectively – Seth Morgan is a solid, accurate veteran – and the defense needs to come up with takeaways like it did last week.
The team that got to the FCS spring playoffs bring good pressure from the defensive line, and the secondary came up with big plays early last week. It’s going to take a few turnovers to pull this off, and VMI should get them.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Kent State Will Win

Don’t get into a twist over what happened in the loss to Texas A&M – that’s one of the five best teams in the country.

This is still one of the nation’s most dangerous offenses that managed to run for 226 yards against the Aggie D, averaging five yards per carry. The line had a hard time handling the defensive pressure that won’t be nearly as intense from the VMI line, and there should be a whole lot more coming from the Dustin Crum and the passing game.

And …

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Kent State will hit a few field goals – that was a big deal for some late in the A&M game.

VMI will be dangerous enough to keep pace for a while, but after being stuffed by an elite A&M defense, Kent State is about to breakout and have a whole lot of fun in an up-and-down shootout.

Texas A&M (0-0) vs Kent State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

Who led the nation in total offense last season? Alabama? Nope. Clemson? Nope. Kent State averaged over 600 yards and 50 points per game with a high-powered attack that gets just about everyone back.

The FlashFast style is just dangerous enough to make this fun, and it starts with the guy who could be among the best quarterbacks the Aggies will face all year.

Dustin Crum hit 74% of his passes last year – and continued to run well – as he turned into an interesting pro prospect under Sean Lewis, soon to be one of the hotter head coaches going.

The Golden Flashes get everyone back on an All-MAC-caliber O line, few teams have more super seniors, and it’s all going to be turned loose.

However …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Welcome to the Kent State defense.

The offense will score points in bunches, but the defense seems to do everything possible to give them all back as soon as it can.

It’s full of experience and the pass rush is outstanding, but if you want to run the ball against this group, enjoy.

A&M has the running backs to go off. Expect big dash after big dash as the ground attack eases in new starting quarterback Haynes King. He won’t have to press or force any throws.

What’s Going To Happen

In a total contrast in styles, A&M will be deliberate as it slows things down to the pace it likes to play, and the Golden Flashes will go at warp speed to try keeping everyone moving.

But A&M will have its share of quick drives, too.

Kent State will get on the board early, but the Aggies will score, too, and they’ll keep on scoring. The A&M D will settle in midway through the second quarter.

2021 CFN MAC Preseason Rankings: East

1. Buffalo Bulls

Quick Take: It’s a new era of UB football under Maurice Linguist, and there’s still enough in place to at least be in the mix for the MAC Championship. The running game will still be good, the defensive back seven is among the best in the league, and overall the machine shouldn’t stop.
Buffalo Preview | Schedule

2. Kent State Golden Flashes

Quick Take: The FlashFast offense is about to be deadlier than ever. The Golden Flashes have the best quarterback in the league in Dustin Crum, the coaching staff is in a groove now, and the defense should be just a wee bit better.
Kent St Preview | Schedule

3. Miami University RedHawks

Quick Take: Defense, offensive consistency, repeat. There might not be a big-time running game, but the passing attack will be fine, the linebacking corps will be great, and the RedHawks will make a big push for the East.
MU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532453]

4. Ohio Bobcats

Quick Take: Feel more than free to put Ohio at the top of the East list – or at least shuffle it among the four best teams – with a great offensive backfield, what should be a dominant running game, and with a D that should be just good enough to hold serve.
Ohio Preview | Schedule

5. Akron Zips

Quick Take: It’s still a work in progress. Akron needs the lines to be a whole lot better, the offense has to be far more consistent, and there have to be a few things the team can rely on week after week. On the plus side, the experience is there.
Akron Preview | Schedule

6. Bowling Green Falcons

Quick Take: The offense has GOT to start working. Head coach Scot Loeffler knows how to get an O going, but it has to happen already to help overcome a defensive front that’s still going to have major issues.
