Julian Edelman provides optimistic update on his health for playoffs

Julian Edelman has been quiet in the Patriots offense for the last few weeks.

New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman tends to keep information about his injuries to himself. But he provided some insight on his health during an interview with WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Thursday morning.

The receiver has been dealing with knee and shoulder injuries for weeks, and has been listed on the injury report since Week 3 when he suffered a chest injury.

“I feel good, and that’s that,” Edelman told WEEI when asked about his health. “I feel better than I have in the last few weeks, and I feel good enough to go out and compete at a high level.”

NFL Network’s Mike Giardi reported Edelman’s shoulder injury is “worse than you can imagine.” Edelman hasn’t missed a game this season, but he has gone missing during games in recent weeks. He was having one of his most statistically impressive seasons of his career through the first 14 weeks, but his production slowed at the end of the season. It’s unclear how much injuries have impacted his production, because Edelman will never say, but the physical tolls seems significant. Still, with Edelman, motivation is never a question.

“You play for the money during the regular season; you play for your name during the postseason,” Edelman said Thursday.

Tom Brady, Julian Edelman enter 2020 with epic Instagram posts

Tom Brady and Julian Edelman rang in the new year subtle reminders on Instagram.

Tom Brady and Julian Edelman are two of the most active New England Patriots on social media.

So, of course they’re going to ring in the new year with social media posts. Brady reminded everyone that he’s still here and active in the year of 2020 — after being drafted in 2000.

5 takeaways from Patriots gut-wrenching loss to Dolphins

Here are five takeaways from the Patriots’ 27-24 loss to the Dolphins in Week 17.

For the first time since 2009, the New England Patriots won’t walk into the playoffs with a first-round bye.

New England knows how important the first-round bye is and that’s why its 27-24 loss to the Miami Dolphins was so significant. The Patriots have clinched the No. 3 seed while the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs hold the top spots in the AFC. The Patriots are set to face the Tennessee Titans in the first round of the playoffs and they’ll have to get through some tough road games in order to make it to the Super Bowl.

The path for ring No. 7 just got much more difficult and the Dolphins exposed New England in all facets of the game. Here are five takeaways from the gut-wrenching loss.

Tom Brady potentially lost his last regular season home game

The legendary 42-year-old quarterback has spent two decades as the signal-caller for New England. He’s delivered Super Bowl victories and has had arguably the most dominant run in professional sports history. Brady and the Patriots have spoiled Boston fans year in and year out, but it could all be coming to an end.

Rumors have floated over the past few months that Brady’s time in New England will be over after this season. It’s been a very trying season for Brady, and he’s struggling more than ever to produce offensively. The Dolphins came into the game as one of the worst overall teams and Brady couldn’t deliver against them in crucial moments.

Brady’s pick-six likely changed the outcome of the game and his inability to score in the redzone has been a glaring issue all season. Joining another team or retiring seem to be more likely options than sticking around in Foxborough after this season.

If this is Brady’s last regular season home game, it’ll be a tough one to swallow.

Six players limited, Shilique Calhoun misses Patriots practice for Week 17

Patriots defensive end Shilique Calhoun missed Thursday’s practice with an illness.

The New England Patriots are fairly healthy after 16 weeks of football.

New England plays the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and only one player missed practice on Thursday, with six players limited. Shilique Calhoun was the lone absent player and he was out with an illness. Calhoun started his first NFL game this year and he’s played a career-high 14 games this season. He’s made an impact as a pass rusher and in the special teams unit.

The six limited players included Julian Edelman (knee/shoulder), Ja’Whaun Bentley (knee), Marcus Cannon (ankle), Jamie Collins (shoulder), Jonathan Jones (groin) and Jason McCourty (groin). The three most important players on that list included Cannon, Edelman and Collins.

Julian Edelman jokes with Isaiah Wynn in Instagram post

Julian Edelman has been a strong source of motivation for the Patriots.

Julian Edelman has been a strong source of motivation for the New England Patriots.

Whether it’s on the field or with his social media posts. Left tackle Isaiah Wynn may have taken this motivation too seriously, according to Edelman’s Instagram post on Thursday.

The 12-3 Patriots are looking to clinch a first-round bye with a victory against the Miami Dolphins at home on Sunday.

Julian Edelman explains ‘weird situation’ when he faked head injury

“I was trying to sell it. I was trying to sell. Maybe they didn’t see it.”

New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman lay still on the turf for an extended period of time after running head-first into Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer on Saturday on a second-and-8 in the second quarter. As Edelman explains it, he wasn’t hurt or concussed. He was just hoping to draw attention to the illegal contact.

The referees saw it just fine. They threw three yellow flags in Edelman’s direction, one of which landed right by his face. But the penalty calls went against Edelman, who committed offensive pass interference and erased a Ben Watson touchdown. The play also landed Edelman in concussion protocol.

“I was trying to sell it. I was trying to sell. Maybe they didn’t see it,” Edelman said Saturday after the game “And then three flags were literally in my face. That sell didn’t work, and it got me out for a full quarter.”

As soon as Edelman saw the flag, he popped up. When he realized the flag was going against him, he grew animated and began appealing to the officials. He finished the drive, but upon returning to the sideline, Edelman entered concussion protocol because of that extended time on the ground. The league’s neutral medical observers flagged him for a potential concussion, and spent a quarter evaluating him.

Edelman drew praise from his teammates after making his return. Special teams ace and captain Matthew Slater playfully compared Edelman to the biblical character, Lazarus, who rose from the dead. Edelman cracked up when he heard that — he went on to explain he’s “sick” of hearing about how tough he is. And in this case, the praise is technically unjustified, considering he was faking the injury (even if Edelman was playing through shoulder and knee injuries in Week 16).

“That’s my job. I’m here to play football. It was a weird situation that happened — just the protocols that you have to go through,” Edelman said.

He has been one of the most crucial players for New England, and so his trip to concussion protocol proved a punishment for the Patriots. But it may not be the only one they get. The NFL fined Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders $15,000 and Pittsburgh $35,000 when he faked a leg injury against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012. Edelman and the Patriots could see something similar if the league finds the receiver’s admission problematic.

Julian Edelman shares epic ‘Star Wars’ themed Instagram post after win vs. Bills

Per usual, Julian Edelman shared an epic Instagram post after the win.

The New England Patriots clinched the AFC East title for the 11th consecutive season after defeating the Buffalo Bills, 24-17.

It was a hard-fought game that came down to the wire, but New England’s offense came through and made the necessary plays to win. Julian Edelman was a big part of that win, and his season has been more than impressive.

Per usual, he shared an epic Instagram post after the game. This one is ‘Star Wars’ themed and features Edelman, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Rex Burkhead, Kyle Van Noy, Chase Winovich, N’Keal Harry and Stephon Gilmore.

Why Julian Edelman found himself licking his chops at times vs. Bills

“Just licking my chops,” Edelman said

New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman shouldn’t be seeing single coverage as often as he does. He’s the team’s leader in receptions, receiving yard and receiving touchdowns after 16 weeks.

His teammates call him the “spark plug” in the offense, but one thing has become progressively clear: he’s capable of being the whole engine. That is, if the teams show single coverage against him. Against double coverage, he has struggled, like he did against the Houston Texans in Week 13. In Week 16, however, he managed a number of crucial plays when the Buffalo Bills tasked a single defensive back with covering Edelman.

What is Edelman thinking when he sees that coverage before the snap?

“Just licking my chops,” Edelman said after the Patriots’ 24-13 win on Saturday.

It almost seems like a serial lack of appreciation of Edelman’s talents. He’s the team’s No. 1 receiver — he played just three quarters against the Bills but managed five catches for 72 yards. In his first snap back from concussion protocol — which held him out of roughly 15 minutes of play — he managed a 30-yard reception (against single coverage). On a 2-point conversion, Edelman slipped through the cracks in a zone defense, and ultimately had no one covering him when he caught the ball. He was asked after the game if he’s surprised to find himself in single coverage.

“People have game plans,” Edelman said. “We have game plans, and there are a lot of good football players out there, so that’s what you hope for as a receiver. … When you have less guys (covering you), that’s usually a better opportunity.”

The Patriots, of course, greatly appreciate Edelman. After the game, coach Bill Belichick said “Julian’s a tough guy … one of our best players.” Brady touted Edelman for that 30-yard reception immediately after his return. “Made a big play like he always does,” Brady said. Rookie receiver Jakobi Meyers called Edelman “a solider.” N’Keal Harry said he is taking notes on Edelman: “He’s open like 95% of the time.”

Still, Edelman said he’s sick of the praise. He’s tired of getting asked about how tough he is. And perhaps that’s why, at least nationally, he doesn’t get the respect he deserves. For example, he missed the 2020 Pro Bowl, despite having more receptions and receiving yards than Browns receiver Jarvis Landry, who made the Pro Bowl. Edelman said the snub didn’t bother him.

“Nah, it is what it is,” Edelman said. “I play the game to go out and win games, get division championships and win things after those things. There’s a lot of good football players out there.”

Would you like to play in one?

“I’d like to play the Miami Dolphins next week,” Edelman said.

He’s just doing what the Patriots have taught him: keep his mouth shut, get open, catch the ball, put up points, get wins and win Super Bowls. He has three — so far.

Julian Edelman exits with injury in Week 16 vs. Bills

Julian Edelman went down to the turf for an extended period.

New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman exited the team’s Week 16 matchup against the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.

During the third quarter, he went into the team’s blue medical tent to get evaluated for a head injury before retreating to the locker room.

His exit came after he ran into Bills safety Jordan Poyer on a route. Edelman was flagged for offensive pass interference on the play, and lay on the turf face-down for an extended period of time before rising. He finished the drive, which ended with a field goal attempt. The Patriots didn’t provide an injury designation (questionable, probable, out) for his potential return when they announced his injury.

Edelman’s departure followed injuries to cornerback Jason McCourty and tackle Marcus Cannon.

Report: Julian Edelman’s health has improved, should play vs. Bills

He was moving well at practice.

New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman may be on the mend. He is expected to play on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills in Week 16, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Patriots listed Edelman (knee/shoulder) as limited in all three practices this week — he was questionable for Week 16.

While he appeared hindered with injuries during Week 15, the Patriots have seen positive signs from him at practice, and he should be more effective than he was last week against the Cincinnati Bengals when he recorded just two receptions for six years.

Edelman leads the Patriots in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He has been, by far, the most influential offensive player not named Tom Brady.

“When he gets going, it’s good for all of us. Got to find ways to get him the ball, and he’s been doing a good job for us all year. He’ll need to do it this week,” Brady said during a press conference on Thursday. “He’s a pretty tough guy. He wants to be out there competing and playing, and I think everyone has a lot of respect for him for that. He’s a tough guy. Good to have him out there.”

The Patriots will kick off against the Bills at 4:30 p.m. at Gillette Stadium on Saturday. If New England wins, it will lock up the AFC East.
