Jaguars reportedly trade K Riley Patterson to Lions

After announcing earlier in the day that they’d waive Riley Patterson, the Jaguars are instead trading the kicker to the Lions.

The Jacksonville Jaguars reversed course and traded Riley Patterson to the Detroit Lions, according to multiple reports, hours after announcing earlier in the day that they planned to waive the kicker.

Jacksonville will receive a conditional seventh-round selection in the 2026 NFL draft as compensation for Patterson, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston.

Patterson, 23, was claimed by the Jaguars in August 2022 after he was waived by the Lions at the end of preseason. In 17 games in Jacksonville, Patterson made 30 of his 35 field goal attempts. He also nailed a 36-yard game-winner in the playoffs to beat the Los Angeles Chargers.

Earlier in the offseason, the Jaguars retained Patterson by tendering him as an exclusive-rights free agent. However, he was replaced on the roster Thursday when the Jaguars signed former Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManus.

The trade is the first made by any NFL team that involves a 2026 selection. The conditions that would complete the deal are not yet known.

Jaguars sign K Brandon McManus, waive K Riley Patterson

The Jaguars replaced kicker Riley Patterson with a veteran on Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a relatively surprising decision, replacing kicker Riley Patterson on Thursday by signing veteran kicker Brandon McManus.

McManus, 31, spent the first nine seasons of his NFL career with the Denver Broncos where he made 223 of 274 field goals (81.4 percent) and 277 of 286 extra point tries (96.9 percent). His career long was a 61-yarder that he made during the 2021 season.

That was one of 40 successful tries from at least 50 yards in McManus’ career.

While the decision to add a bigger leg isn’t a shocking one, waiving Patterson in May is a surprise.

Patterson, 23, was scooped off waivers by the Jaguars just before the start of the 2022 season and proved to be a reliable addition. While his longest make of the year was from only 53 yards, Patterson made 30 of his 35 field goal attempts (85.7 percent) and 36 of his 37 extra point tries (97.3 percent).

Most importantly, Patterson came up clutch when the Jaguars needed him to in January, drilling a 36-yarder against the Los Angeles Chargers to complete a historic comeback.

Jacksonville also has kicker James McCourt, who spent the 2022 season on the team’s practice squad after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent.

Jaguars granted international marketing rights in Ireland

The Jaguars plan to win over some fans in Ireland.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have spent a decade growing their brand in the United Kingdom and will now expand those efforts to include Ireland.

On Tuesday, the NFL announced an expansion of its Global Markets Program (previously known as International Home Marketing Areas) to 21 teams sharing rights in 14 markets.

The Jaguars will share rights in Ireland with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as both teams are now allowed to build their brand in the country.

“Since we arrived in London in 2013, we have made great strides in growing the Jaguars fan community outside of the United States with a committed and loyal supporter base already established across the country,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in a statement. “Our Foundation reaches tens of thousands of young people each year through the delivery of community programs like JagTag and is committed to providing sustainable solutions to tackle inequality and to support the development of young people.

“I am delighted to be able to announce that we are expanding our marketing rights into the Republic of Ireland, which not only underpins our long-term commitment to the UK but presents us with the opportunity to amplify our trajectory of growth internationally. The Republic is famous for its love of American Football, therefore appealing to new Jaguars fans through meaningful fan engagement and bespoke initiatives that will contribute to communities in the Republic, will truly reflect the Jaguars position as an international NFL team.”

In 1997, a preseason game between the Steelers and Chicago Bears was held at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, but the league hasn’t been back and has never placed a regular season game there.

Jaguars DC Mike Caldwell to participate in Coach Accelerator program

Mike Caldwell is one of 40 assistant coaches set to participate in a program that will connect him with NFL owners and executives.

The NFL will host a Coach Accelerator program next week in Minneapolis, Minn. and Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell is set to be a participant.

The program “aims to increase exposure between owners, executives, and diverse coaching talent,” according to the NFL.

Caldwell, 51, was one of 40 assistant coaches invited by the NFL, which  sought to bring in coaches with a high likelihood of being considered for a head coaching job in the future.

“In the year since its inception, we’ve been encouraged by the positive response to the Accelerator from both club owners and participants,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to build on an incredible program that supports diverse talent.”

The Jaguars hired Caldwell during the 2022 offseason after he previously spent three years as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebackers coach. Prior to that, he had stints as an assistant with the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and Philadelphia Eagles.

In his first season in Jacksonville, the team finished 12th in points allowed.

Jaguars place WR Jaylon Moore on injured reserve

The Jaguars placed Jaylon Moore on injured reserve to make room for XFL pass rusher Willie Taylor III.

The Jacksonville Jaguars added XFL pass rusher Willie Taylor III on Wednesday and made room on the roster by placing wide receiver Jaylon Moore on injured reserve.

Moore, 25, spent the 2022 season on the Jaguars’ practice squad after spending the first two years of his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens.

Through three seasons in the NFL, the former undrafted free agent hasn’t played in a regular season game. Landing on the injured reserve in the offseason means that Moore’s 2023 season is over.

While the details of his season-ending injury have not been made public, Moore hinted at the news in a post on Instagram last week.

“Definitely one the most frustrating part of my life but I know everything happens for a reason,” Moore wrote.

The Jaguars have four veterans presumably locking down four roster spots in Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, and Jamal Agnew. The remainder of the depth chart will be sorted out in training camp with Tim Jones, Kevin Austin Jr., and sixth-round pick Parker Washington among the top contenders.

Jaguars announce full 2023 preseason schedule

The Jaguars will kick off their preseason slate on Aug. 12.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2023 campaign will get started on Aug. 12 with their first preseason game.

On Wednesday, the team announced the dates, times, and TV schedules for three preseason games:

  • Saturday, Aug. 12: Jaguars at Dallas Cowboys, 5 p.m. ET, FOX30
  • Saturday, Aug. 19: Jaguars at Detroit Lions, 1 p.m. ET, FOX30
  • Saturday, Aug. 26: Miami Dolphins at Jaguars, 7 p.m. ET, CBS47

Last season, the Jaguars played four preseason games as they were featured in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. This year, it’ll be the second time ever that Jacksonville plays just three exhibition games ahead of the regular season.

With back-to-back road games in August — as well as joint practices scheduled with the Lions in Detroit — the Jaguars will spend a significant stretch away from Jacksonville in the middle of August. The Jaguars will, however, have eight home games at TIAA Bank Field during the regular season on top of a “home” game at Wembley Stadium in London.

Jaguars sign former Commanders TE Sammis Reyes

The Jaguars signed Sammis Reyes, who made history in 2021 by becoming the NFL’s first ever Chilean-born player.

The Jacksonville Jaguars added a tight end to the roster Tuesday, signing former Washington Commanders special teamer Sammis Reyes.

Reyes, 27, became the first Chilean-born player in NFL history when he signed with Washington in 2021. He appeared in 11 games with the team, but contributed mostly on special teams, recording two tackles in his first season.

He was released by the Commanders in August 2022 after a hamstring injured landed him on injured reserve in training camp. He was scooped up by the Chicago Bears and spent some time on the team’s practice squad, but never appeared in a regular season game with Chicago.

Reyes played college basketball at a few schools, including Hawaii and Tulane. He switched his focus to football while in his mid 20s and it didn’t take long for him to impress scouts with his athleticism.

Jacksonville addressed its lack of depth at the tight end position by drafting Brenton Strange in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft. However, the team doesn’t have much after Evan Engram and Strange. Reyes will is currently set to compete with 2021 fifth-round pick Luke Farrell, 2022 undrafted free agent signing Gerrit Prince, and 2023 undrafted free agent signing Leonard Taylor for a roster spot.

To make room for Reyes on the roster, the Jaguars released safety Deionte Thompson.

Jaguars reportedly tried to trade for Bengals OT Jonah Williams

The Jaguars reportedly had their eye on Bengals OT Jonah Williams earlier this offseason.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had “real interest” in a trade to acquire offensive tackle Jonah Williams from the Cincinnati Bengals and the two teams had talks regarding a deal before the Bengals decided to keep the lineman, according to Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Williams reportedly requested a trade in March after the Bengals signed offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. in free agency.

The former first-round pick has played exclusively at left tackle during his career in Cincinnati, but is now expected to make the transition to right tackle following the addition of Brown.

These aren’t the first rumblings of discussions between the Bengals and Jaguars, as Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline also reported in April that the two teams were talking. However, he said negotiations ended when Jacksonville picked Anton Harrison in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Harrison will begin his NFL career at right tackle, which presumably leaves Cam Robinson and Walker Little both at left tackle. Robinson is expected to be suspended at the beginning of the season for a performance-enhancing drug policy violation, but the length of that ban is still unknown.
