Iowa vs Nevada Game Preview

Why Nevada Will Win

Can you score a touchdown, Nevada? Just one and a field goal might get it done.

The Iowa offense is – let’s just be nice about it – struggling.

There was just one field goal produced in the 7-3 win over South Dakota State, and the one touchdown early against Iowa State wasn’t enough to hold up. There were several chances and opportunities to score in the 10-7 loss, and it didn’t happen.

Nevada has enough of a running game to push the Hawkeyes a bit. It’s only averaging 3.5 yards per carry, but it has been effective so far.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Iowa Will Win

Yeah, the Iowa touchdown against Iowa State wasn’t enough to get the job done, but it almost was.

Is anything working on offense? No, but the defense has been a rock. It’s allowing just 2.3 yards per carry, it came up with three takeaways against Iowa State, and it’s not crazy to actually expect safeties from this group.

Nevada has a good backfield, but it’s not going to run on a regular basis, and improved passing game that showed up in desperation mode against Incarnate Word – a 55-41 loss – has to deal with an Iowa front seven that’s about to dial up the pressure even more.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa will finally score more than one touchdown.

As bad as things are, the offense will get a little something out of a ground game against a Wolf Pack D that helped up against New Mexico State and Texas State, but got ripped up by UIW.

It’s not going to be pretty in any way, but to suffering Iowa fans, the O will look like the Greatest Show On Turf compared to the first two weeks.

Iowa State vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Seven points probably isn’t going to get it done against Iowa State.

Iowa decided to make it as tough on itself as possible in a 7-3 win over South Dakota State with a field goal and two safeties – it was performance art.

Iowa State might be rebuilding and recouping, but it got the running game working right away in the easy win over SE Missouri State. The defense wasn’t a rock, but it didn’t break too often after bending, and it got the job done without having to show anything to Iowa. There wasn’t a lot happening in the backfield, partly because the D didn’t have to get too aggressive. Against an Iowa O line that needs to do something for the ground game, the Cyclones should hold up.

The passing game got a monster day out of WR Xavier Hutchinson – 128 yards and three scores on eight grabs – Hunter Dekkers settled in at quarterback, and …

The Iowa offense did absolutely nothing. Get up, don’t turn the ball over, and enjoy.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Iowa Will Win

Any win you can walk away from is a good one.

7-3, 77-3, they’re all wins, and Iowa is 1-0.

So what was positive about the South Dakota State debacle? Leshon Williams had a decent day running the ball for 72 yards. It was workmanlike, and there weren’t any big bursts, but at least he was able to settle in a bit.

On the other side, the defense was amazing. It didn’t generate any turnovers, but South Dakota State has a decent offense and it was held to just 120 yards.

Iowa’s defense is going to play with its hair on fire.

The formula has to work. Generate takeaways against an Iowa State offense that’s still getting its parts in sync, capitalize on every opportunity, and ask Spencer Petras to start hitting just a few of his midrange throws to keep the chains moving.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much do you really believe in the Iowa defense?

It’s not like the Hawkeyes did anything offensively last year against Iowa State – winning 27-17 on just 173 yards – but the D saved the day with a brilliant performance.

Iowa State isn’t going to do anything funky here. The Hawkeye offensive front can’t generate a push, so it’ll be all about field position, turnovers, and mistakes.

But it’s Iowa, and we know how this works – Iowa State has lost six in a row in the series.

There won’t be anything remotely pretty about how this gets done, but the Hawkeyes will get one good scoring drive, the defense will somehow come up with something big, and it’ll be a win that defies all logic and reason.

Iowa vs South Dakota State Game Preview

Why South Dakota State Will Win

This isn’t just some random FCS team coming in to collect a paycheck.

South Dakota State is an FCS Playoff contender with an offense that’s dangerous enough to give Iowa more than just a push – it has a few playmakers the Big Ten would love to have.

Tucker Kraft is an NFL prospect at tight end, the receiving corps is terrific, and the offense gets back quarterback Mark Gronowski from a knee injury.

The Jackrabbits bring an efficient passing game, a strong line, and most importantly when it comes to dealing with the Hawkeyes, they probably won’t have a turnover problem.

But …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa Will Win

The Hawkeye defensive front isn’t going to give up much.

The offense will still be a work in progress, but the secondary has the playmakers back to be dangerous again, the line will get into the backfield, and the linebacking corps is among the best in the nation.

South Dakota State might have the balance, but the offense will struggle to keep things consistently moving.

The Iowa O line will try to get its groove back after a tough year. This is a program that knows how to fix the glitch – the running game will work against the SDSU front, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t going to be a breeze.

The Iowa defense will do its part, but the pass rush from the Jackrabbit line will be a bother in too many key spots for Iowa to get comfortable.

Unlike last year, QB Spencer Petras will be a bit better with the deep ball, the Iowa secondary will come up with a big takeaway, and it’ll be on to Iowa State.

25 Winningest Programs To Not Make The College Football Playoff

College Football Playoff: 25 winningest teams to not make the tournament

What are the 25 winningest programs to not make the College Football Playoff? Here are the top schools in the CFP era to miss out on the fun.

Cincinnati and Michigan were able to make the College Football Playoff last season. Their doors might have been blown off by Alabama and Georgia, respectively, but they at least brought some new energy to the mini-tournament.

The College Football Playoff has only been around for eight seasons and just 13 schools – Alabama, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington – have played in it and just five won it all.

That means 90% of the FBS college football programs haven’t been in the post-season – at least the version that matters – since this grand experiment started.

That’s the equivalent of only 36 college basketball programs making the NCAA Tournament over the last eight years – which is a good idea, by the way, but I digress.

What college football programs were able to win a lot of games over the last eight years without the playoff payoff? 25 have won 60 or more games in eight seasons – averaging 7.5 a year, but it’s better than that considering some played a short schedule in 2020 – without getting the call.

If you didn’t get to 60 victories – no Texas, or Tennessee, or Nebraska, Michigan State, or North Carolina – you don’t get on the list. So with that, here are the 25 winningest teams to not make the College Football Playoff.

25. USC

Wins Since 2014: 60
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 11-3, Pac-12 champion, Rose Bowl win
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Strong

Bottom Line: USC might be last on this list, but it’s got the best shot of going to the College Football Playoff this year with Lincoln Riley and a loaded all-star team ready to roll. The 2020 team would’ve had a case for the CFP if it won the Pac-12 title to finish 6-0 – it lost to Oregon, but no unbeaten Power Five champ has ever been left out. It’s been a disappointing run since going 12-1 in 2008. That’s all about to change.
USC Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

T22. NC State

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 9-4, Sun Bowl win
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Possible

Bottom Line: The Wolfpack have been strongly consistent since Dave Doeren took over, but they haven’t been able to get a turn in the ACC Championship mix – being in the same division with Clemson has something to do with that. This should be his best team yet, and if it can somehow get by the Tigers on the road, there’s a real shot at going 12-1 with an ACC Championship and a CFP shot. That’s a massive if, though.
NC State Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

T22. Miami

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 10-3, ACC Championship loss, Orange Bowl loss
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Slim

Bottom Line: Miami flirted with something fun in 2017 with a 10-0 start before losing the last three games. However, had it beaten Clemson in the ACC Championship – it lost 38-3 – it would’ve been in the CFP. This year’s schedule is too tough for a reloading team – with road games at Clemson and Texas A&M – but new head coach Mario Cristobal might just restore the glory in a hurry.
Miami Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

T22. Western Michigan

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2016, 13-1, MAC champion, Cotton Bowl loss
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: None

Bottom Line: Now-Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck led the way to a phenomenal 13-0 regular season with a MAC title in 2016, and it still wasn’t enough to get near the College Football Playoff. The Broncos have been good ever since, but they haven’t been able to come close to repeating the glory. They’ll be strong this season, but even if they can win at Michigan State and against Pitt – and can run through the MAC unbeaten – it still shouldn’t be enough for a CFP shot.

Big Ten Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Big Ten preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

You want the predictions for the 2022 Big Ten football season? It’s not all that hard …

Ohio State is going to be fantastic, and now it’s mad.

We got the Michigan curveball last year. It’s rebuilding, but it’s still going to be strong. Michigan State and Penn State are good, Wisconsin is really good, Iowa is Iowa, and others like Maryland and Nebraska should rise up and have good seasons.

Who can catch the Buckeyes?

More interesting will be a few strange twists and turns. Most of the solid teams can hang with or beat anyone else in the conference, and on the right day an Illinois or Northwestern or Rutgers should have the formula to pull off something fun.

There are two more years before USC and UCLA come aboard. That’s all anyone will be talking about, but until then, this season should be entertaining – at least outside of what OSU will probably do.
