Iowa vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

Well look at Air Iowa and it’s fun ‘n’ gun attack rolling up close to 400 yards and 33 points on Northwestern.

As was pointed out before last week’s game, yes, the Iowa offense is awful, but in the first seven games it went up against five of the best defenses in college football, one of the top three defenses in the FCS, and played Nevada in crazy rainstorm.

Northwestern’s defense is the cure for all offenses, and Purdue’s defense isn’t awful, but the Iowa O won’t be stopped cold and the D should be able to be the Iowa D – don’t expect much from the Purdue ground game.

This should be Iowa’s speed all the way around, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Purdue Will Win

Get that passing game going early and see what happens.

Yes, Iowa is fifth in the nation in total defense, and yes, you have to budget in a few turnovers, but it’s possible to throw on this bunch.

Ohio State didn’t have too many problems, and Rutgers was able to come up with enough through the air to make the game somewhat interesting. It’s mostly about completion percentage – just keep everything moving.

QB Aidan O’Connell had a rough run pianist Wisconsin two weeks ago, but he’s going to throw it at least 40 times, and he’s going to crank up close to 300 yards – that’s what the Purdue offense does.

As long as he gets time to keep hitting the midrange passes, the offense can work against this brick wall of a D.

And yes, the Iowa offense might be okay, but it’s still not great. Get up fast and that might be it.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Purdue defense isn’t as good as most of the versions Iowa has seen so far, but it’s great at generating third down stops, the offense is terrific at controlling the clock, and that might be enough to pull this off at home.

Having two weeks off to rest up and get ready won’t hurt, either.

Northwestern vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

The Hawkeye defense continues to be fantastic, and in this, that should be enough.

The offensive side was mostly to blame for the 54-10 loss to Ohio State with six turnovers putting the D in horrible situations. Even so, holding the Buckeye running game to just 66 yards and keeping the monster attack to 360 yards is a real positive.

Even after going to Columbus the defense is sixth in the nation overall, eighth in scoring defense, and now it gets a Northwestern offense that can’t turn the ball over fast enough and isn’t going to get the running game going against the brick wall of a defensive front.

Of course …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Northwestern Will Win

Iowa’s offense continues to be stunningly miserable.

Playing Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio State would be a problem for anyone, but Iowa really couldn’t do much of anything to get moving. The offense has only pushed past the 300-yard mark once – 337 yards in the rain-soaked win over Nevada – and the Northwestern defense could use the break.

For all of the problems, the Wildcat offensive front has been solid in pass protection, the pass defense is fine, and as long as there aren’t a slew of mistakes this will be close because it’s Iowa.

This O really doesn’t work. However …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Northwestern can’t win this without a slew of takeaways, and that’s almost certainly not going to happen.

The Wildcats forced five takeaways against Penn State, but that was played in a monsoon – no one could hold on to the ball. Outside of that, the defense hasn’t come up with any takeaways since mid-September.

It’s Iowa. It’s going to be ugly, but the running game will be okay, the defense will be great, and it’ll get out with a win to end the rough run.

Ohio State vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

Really, just how banged up is Ohio State?

Star WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba might play on his injured hamstring, but that’s hardly for certain. The same goes for the running back tandem of Miyan Williams and TreVeon Henderson, but they’re supposedly okay with two weeks off after getting banged up.

Even if they can all go they’re not going to be 100%.

As amazing as the Ohio State offense is – with or without all the skill parts – the Iowa defense knows how to grind games down.

It kept Michigan to 327 yards and didn’t buckle until late. It hasn’t given up a rushing touchdown to anyone but the Wolverines, it allowed just three touchdown passes so far, forced three takeaways in three separate games, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Ohio State Will Win

Score once and this might be over.

It might be a punchline at this point, but the Iowa offense really is just that bad.

Forget about points, just getting first downs is like pulling teeth.

The worst offense in college football averages just 239 yards per game, it can’t come up with those pesky first downs – it’s last in the nation at doing that – the running game doesn’t exist, there’s no downfield passing game, and almost nothing happens unless the defense generates takeaways.

Yeah, the Iowa defense might keep the Buckeye offense from going off – Notre Dame was able to do it in the opener – but again, it’s not going to take a ton to put this away.

And …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Five of the top seven teams in the country in total defense are in the Big Ten. Four of them have yet to play Ohio State, and Ohio State is the fifth.

The amazing Buckeye offense gets the headlines, but the key to 2022 is the improved defense that appears to have made all the problems of 2021 disappear.

The rested Buckeye offense will score on the first two drives, but Iowa’s defense will clamp down and keep this from getting too far out of hand. It won’t matter.

Iowa vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

The defense is still working.

The much-maligned offense had a few nice moments in the 27-14 loss to Michigan – it hit the 200-yard mark through the air for the first time all season – but it was the defense that kept the game in range.

Illinois isn’t going to wing the ball all around the yard. It can, but it’s not going to against the Hawkeye secondary. This will be about the lines, the ground games, and the ability to capitalize on mistakes. Illinois has been careful with the ball over the last few games, but it’s had a few rough patches with turnovers.

Iowa hasn’t turned it over in three weeks.

As long as the Hawkeyes can hold up against the run and force a slew of third and long plays – Illinois doesn’t push the ball downfield at all – this will be a fight deep into the fourth.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Illinois Will Win

Bret Bielema and his team went into Madison and did what Wisconsin wishes it could do.

His Illini were able to grind it out, were +3 in turnover margin, and held the supposedly biggest, baddest running game around to just two yards.

The defense is No. 1 in the nation in scoring D allowing just over eight points per game, Chase Brown and the ground attack are ultra-efficient, and more than anything else, the team knows how to maintain control.

Iowa games are low scoring defensive fights, but its D is on the field way too much thanks to an inept offense. Illinois is seventh in the nation in time of possession keeping it for close to 35 minutes per game.

So, basically …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

A week after outbadgering the Badgers, Illinois will do what Iowa wants to do, only better.

Look elsewhere if you want a slew of points. Neither passing game will take any big chances, both running games will keep giving it the old college try to kill some time, but this will be all about the defenses and field position.

Iowa has the better kicking game, it’s punting game is far superior, and it’s going to keep chipping away as the Illini defense holds firm time and again.

Illinois, though, will get that one second half touchdown Iowa won’t.

Michigan vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Ooooooh, Iowa scored 27 points for two weeks in a row.

The defense continues to be great, but the passing game has yet to push past 175 yards and everything is still a struggle.

Third down conversions are a rumor, the ground game hasn’t been anything great, and overall, even with the two wins, Iowa is still dead last in the nation in total offense.

Yes, the defense makes up for it – it’s No. 1 in the country in scoring D – and takeaways are a concern, but there’s no ability whatsoever to mount any semblance of a comeback if the Wolverines can get up fast.

With some due respect to Iowa State – animals were walking two by two on the field in the 10-7 Iowa win in the rain – the Hawkeye D has yet to face anyone who can pound away.

The Michigan offensive front is killing everyone, Blake Corum is the hottest running back in college football, and overall there’s a great consistency to what the offense can do.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Iowa Will Win

Can the Iowa defense and overall style be enough to stuff the Michigan offense?

Yeah, Iowa hasn’t exactly dealt with the Buffalo Bills so far, but Michigan has yet to face a defense that can put up even the slightest resistance.

On the one side, the Wolverines had three tune-ups and then passed the test against Maryland. The Iowa defense attacks more, does a better job of taking the ball away with seven forced turnovers in the last three games, and it’s going to generate pressure on JJ McCarthy.

The Michigan quarterback was more than fine in the win over the Terps, but he wasn’t able to do much with his legs and the explosiveness wasn’t quite there with the passing game.

This game might be all about who’ll blink. Iowa hasn’t turned the ball over in the last two games, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan hasn’t given away a thing.

One interception against Hawaii, one fumble against Maryland. That’s been in for the turnovers. The team has been flagged a ridiculously low nine times, and it’s been able to get through any slight adversity by being methodical.

This is the game for the Michigan defense.

The offense will sputter and cough, and Corum will be bottled up, but it’ll be a slow and steady drum beat with just enough points to get by. The Wolverine D will hold up well with a great day against the non-existent Iowa passing attack.
