Iowa (16-7) vs. Nebraska (7-15) Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers lost seven straight and eight of the last nine. That one win …

Iowa.

How? Iowa was miserable from three against a Nebraska defense that’s not all that bad at clamping down on teams at the perimeter. There’s no fear at bombing away from three, the O can get back in games in a hurry, and it leads the Big Ten in turnover margin – it just doesn’t give the ball away.

However …

[lawrence-related id=507560]

Why Iowa Will Win

The Nebraska defense, overall, just isn’t good enough.

Iowa went dead-cold in the loss to the Huskers, and it was still close late in the 76-70 loss. As long as the offense can keep the ball moving and make the extra pass like it usually does, the points will come.

The bigger problem for Nebraska will be on the boards. It’s dead last in the Big Ten in rebounds, Iowa is just good enough on the boards to be fine, and this time around, there will be more second-chance points, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa won’t be that bad from three again like it was in Lincoln, and the defense will show up after getting its doors blown off by Purdue on Wednesday night.

This is suddenly turning into an inconsistent Hawkeye team, but at home it’ll pick it back up offensively against the struggling Husker D.

Iowa (8-3) vs. Nebraska (5-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Iowa Will Win

The defense continues to be terrific.

The offense might not be anything scintillating, and the team is playing with house money with eight wins, a good bowl game assured, and whole lot to like about a D that hasn’t allowed more than 24 points on the year.

It’s fifth in the nation in scoring D. it fantastic at stuffing the run, and it’s been able to slow down everyone but Wisconsin – no shame there.

Illinois almost ran for 200 yards, but the Hawkeyes took away the running backs and handled drives well by bending but not breaking. Nebraska’s been able to throw okay, but it hasn’t been dangerous enough for the Hawkeyes to worry.

The Iowa line doesn’t get into the backfield, but the line doesn’t allow much of anything getting to the second-level, and it should be able to bottle up Adrian Martinez just enough on third downs to stall drives.

Martinez has been great over the last few weeks, the Husker running game has been solid … and it doesn’t really matter.

Beating Maryland was a given, but the Huskers were ripping off big runs and over 200 yards against Indiana and Wisconsin, and it didn’t matter.

It’s not going to rip off big runs against Iowa. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Nebraska Will Win

It’s statement time for Martinez.

He’s been terrific at times over the last three weeks – throwing for close to 650 yards with three touchdowns, and running for close to 250 yards with four touchdowns – but the stats won’t matter if the Huskers don’t win this.

There’s still an outside shot Nebraska can lose, finish 5-7, and still get bowl eligible, but that’s not realistically going to happen. The pressure is on him to win, get Nebraska that sixth victory to go bowling in a disappointing year, and it’ll be a major plus going into the offseason.

He has to do everything right.

This isn’t a high-powered Iowa team with no running game and not enough downfield explosion to deal with. The Huskers have to get out to a hot start, put the pressure on Nate Stanley and the Iowa O to open it up, and take the whole team out of its comfort zone.

Iowa isn’t going to run away and hide with a 24-0 start. Nebraska will be in it all game long, and Martinez has to come through.

[lawrence-related id=502045]

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska will bring the energy and the fun as it tries to get that sixth win, but Iowa’s defense will ruin the day.

Stanley won’t go off, but he’ll hit an efficient and effective 60% of his passes, he won’t throw any picks, and he’ll connect on just enough third down throws to kill Nebraska’s momentum.

Martinez and the Nebraska O won’t get the explosive played needed to pull this off, and it won’t go on enough scoring marches on long drives. The placekicking that was so solid against Maryland will suddenly be a problem agains with two key misses.

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 13 Big Ten game.

@PeteFiutak

Michigan State 27, Rutgers 0

It was only a win over Rutgers, but Michigan State really, really, really, really needed that. It wasn’t perfect, the running game was stuffed a bit too much and the offense stalled a bit, but Cody White went off for 11 catches for 136 yards and three scores, and it was a shutout over a team that was supposed to be shutout. The program can exhale for a moment – it hit the putt.

Rutgers just doesn’t have the offensive talent. Johnny Langan completed 8-of-20 passes for 57 yards with a pick, led the team with 49 rushing yards, and Isaiah Pacheco was held to 36 yards. It didn’t help that the Scarlet Knights were playing a team that cared.

The Spartans owned this game by more than the final score. They didn’t allow a third down conversion and held the ball for almost 38 minutes. There wasn’t any drama whatsoever.

Michigan State did what it needed to do, and now it closes out with Maryland for a shot at a sixth win and bowl eligibility. Rutgers’ season will come to a brutal but merciful end at Penn State.

Iowa 19, Illinois 10

Iowa played a typical Iowa game. It battled hard, played good run defense, and did enough to keep things moving through the air. It wasn’t easy, and it was a grind to do anything on the ground, but it was the eighth win of the season with just Nebraska to go. A shot at a ten-win campaign is still there.

The Hawkeyes couldn’t get any push up front – the Illinois D line did a nice job. Iowa ended up with just 79 rushing yards, and Nate Stanley wasn’t all that sharp, but he connected on a few bit pass plays with Ihmir Smith-Marsette catching four passes for 121 yards.

Illinois played relatively well despite only scoring ten points. The running backs didn’t get the ball enough – QB Brandon Peters led the team with 76 rushing yards – but the O averaged close to five yards per carry. The passing game didn’t cluck – Peters threw two picks – but it was an okay performance despite the final score.

It was a good fight, and now Illinois gets to go for a seventh win when it finishes up against Northwestern. If a 19-10 loss on the road to Iowa was okay, a loss of any sort to this Wildcat team would be totally unacceptable.

Illinois (6-4) vs. Iowa (7-3) Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

The red-hot Illini have won four straight, they’ve become bowl eligible, and they’ve been a whole lot of fun with dramatic wins over Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Now it’s gravy time.

Beating the Badgers and Spartans was great, but can they get by an Iowa team team that just handed Minnesota its first loss of the year? It’s possible as long as they can keep dominating the turnover margin.

How did they beat Bucky? They hung around, hung around, hung around … and then came the two late takeaways on the way to the win.

Two weeks ago, the four turnovers were vital in Michigan State’s meltdown against an Illini defense that generates a solid pass rush and leads the nation with 26 takeaways. The D has come up with at least two in every game but the loss to Eastern Michigan.

Iowa doesn’t score a bunch, it’s not going to explode and put this game away fast – it doesn’t have the pop – and Illinois should be able to hang around, hang around, hang around …

One problem.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Iowa Will Win

Iowa doesn’t turn the ball over.

It’s given it up just nine times on the year, with four turnovers in the loss to Michigan, two in the loss to Penn State, and three against everyone else. On the year, the Hawkeyes – who lead the Big Ten with the fewest giveaways – are 5-0 when they don’t turn the ball over,

Iowa has won 12 straight games going back to 2016 when it doesn’t suffer a turnover, and is 21-1 – the lone loss coming to Wisconsin in 2016 – when there aren’t any mistakes.

No, the Hawkeyes don’t score in bunches and they’re not going to get up 31-0 and put the game away, but they’re going to hold the ball for what seems like forever. Illinois doesn’t go on long marches, and it doesn’t do anything to control the clock – it’s dead last in the Big Ten in time of possession.

Iowa’s defense is only giving up just over 300 yards per game, QB Nate Stanley is experienced enough to not throw the big pick, and the team doesn’t beat itself.

It leads the Big Ten in fewest penalties along with the fewest turnovers. It’s not going to give the Illini the breaks they’ll need to pull this off.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The Iowa defensive front will stall the pedestrian Illinois running game, while the offensive side will milk the clock and control the game throughout. The Illini will do what they do and come up with one or two big plays to stay alive, but the Hawkeyes won’t collapse late like the Spartans did.

Big Ten Quick Thoughts, Takes On Every Game: Week 12

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 Big Ten game.

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 Big Ten game.

@PeteFiutak

Wisconsin 37, Nebraska 21

Adrian Martinez was fantastic. He was fast, decisive, and he looked like the star for the Husker offense everyone is hoping he’ll be. He threw for 220 yards and a score, ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, Dedrick Mills ran for 188 yards and a score, and Nebraska gained almost 500 yards …

And Nebraska lost by 16.

Wisconsin got shoved around too much, struggled against the Nebraska running game, and gave up too many big plays, but Jonathan Taylor ran for 204 yards and two scores, QB Jack Coan was fine, Aron Cruickshank retuned a kick for a score, and the D came through when absolutely needed.

The Badgers need to win out and get a loss from Minnesota before they play on November 30th. Nebraska has to beat both Maryland on the road and against Iowa to go bowling.

Northwestern 45, UMass 6

Leave it to Northwestern to be the only team that couldn’t hang a gajillion points on the worst defense in college football. One of the scores came on a blocked field goal.

This was the game to have a whole lot of fun with the passing game. Aidan Smith completed 7-of-13 passes for 76 yards with two interceptions. Wheeeeee!

Evan Hull?! The freshman had four carries all year for 15 yards, and he ripped through the Minutemen for 220 yards and four scores on 24 carries. The Wildcats ran for 335 yards and five scores.

It’s going to take something amazing for the Wildcats to win another game with Minnesota and at Illinois to close. 2-10 would be the worst season since going 2-9 in 1993.

NEXT: Michigan 44, Michigan State 10; Penn State 34, Indiana 27

Minnesota (9-0) vs. Iowa (6-3) Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

Can we start giving Minnesota credit for having a terrific passing game led by a quarterback having a fantastic season?

Everyone knows who Joe Burrow is now. Everyone figured out how to spell Tagovailoa, is familiar with Jalen Hurts, marvels at Justin Fields, and has Justin Herbert on the NFL radar.

Does anyone have a clue who Tanner Morgan is?

He’s only the fourth-most efficient passer in college football – right after Hurts, Tagovailoa and Burrow – is third in yards per attempt, and is coming off a special day against a supposedly impenetrable Penn State defense.

Minnesota might be able to run well with Rodney Smith and its deep group of backs, but Morgan was the star last Saturday, completing 18-of-20 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns. It helps to have NFL-caliber receivers in Rashod Bateman and Tyler Johnson to throw to.

Iowa’s secondary has been solid, but it got can be hit for big yards by a hot quarterback, and it doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush to bother Morgan on a consistent basis.

Iowa’s Nate Stanley hit a few big passes last week against Wisconsin, but it doesn’t have a deep ball aspect to its game. Minnesota can unleash that at any time.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Iowa Will Win

Iowa does a lot of things Penn State does, only – potentially – without the turnovers.

To be fair, Penn State doesn’t have a turnover problem and Minnesota was good enough to change that for a game, but the Hawkeyes have only lost the turnover battle twice – the losses to Michigan and Penn State – and gave it away a mere three times in the other seven games.

The Hawkeyes have to hold up against the run, and they almost certainly won’t get gouged. And even if they do, they’re going to be able to keep this close.

Last week, Jonathan Taylor was able to go off on the Iowa run defense, but 1) that’s Jonathan Taylor, 2) it was an aberration, and 3) the Hawkeyes still almost pulled out the win. They’re 0-3 when allowing 120 rushing yards or more, and 6-0 when allowing fewer.

To hold up, Iowa has to control the time of possession battle – it’s great at that – and it needs Stanley to keep hitting his third down plays. Sean Clifford kept things moving throughout the game for Penn State, and Stanley can hit those same sorts of throws to the tight ends over the middle to keep gouging the Gopher secondary. However …

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is amazing at winning close games, and Iowa is just okay at it.

Iowa is roughly three plays away from unbeaten – or close to three plays – but that’s sort of the point. Minnesota is 5-0 in games decided by a touchdown or less, and Iowa is 2-3 in those games.

The world is watching Minnesota now, but this game doesn’t matter that much. The Gophers can lose, beat Northwestern and Wisconsin, and get to the Big Ten Championship at 11-1 with a shot at Ohio State or Penn State for an almost certain berth in the College Football Playoff.

First, the Gophers will take one step closer to getting to Indianapolis by hanging on late for yet another thrilling, close win.

Second, they leave Kinnick Stadium with the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy.
