Wisconsin vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

Illinois is playing like Wisconsin wishes it could.

No, the Illini ground game isn’t cranking up massive numbers, but Chase Brown leads the nation in rushing for the steady attack. The defense has been a rock against the run, leads the nation in pass efficiency defense, and it’s dominating the time of possession battle.

How do you beat Wisconsin – at least if you don’t have Ohio State’s talent?

Run the clock, win the turnover battle, and pound away and stand up to the physicality. The Illini have the balanced attack now to do it all against a Wisconsin team that’s spinning its wheels.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Throw out the blowout loss to Ohio State – that team is going to rip apart everyone.

The Badger running game still works just fine, even if it’s not the soul-crushing force the program is known for.

Again, forgetting what happened last week and how the defense looked, Wisconsin should be able to hold up against Brown and generate enough pressure on QB Tommy DeVito to matter.

The defense is forcing takeaways, the offense going to be able to beat the Illini at their own ball control game, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Bret Bielema has the team in place to beat the reeling Badgers.

It starts with the takeaways. Wisconsin has no ability whatsoever to overcome adversity, and it’s going to turn it over twice to the attacking Illini defense.

But the Badgers have a defense, too.

Yes, Illinois does what Wisconsin does. Wisconsin does it a bit better.

Don’t expect a lot of points. The Badgers will survive with a few big second Half stops.

Illinois vs Chattanooga Game Preview

Why Chattanooga Will Win

The 3-0 Mocs are good enough to pull this off, mainly because they have the lines that can hold up against the brutish Illini.

The offensive front is great in pass protection, the pass rush is fantastic, and the run defense isn’t allowing a thing so far. Illinois is better up front on both sides, but it’s hardly going to be able to dominate.

Chattanooga doesn’t make a ton of mistakes, there’s enough explosion to come up with a few big plays, and again, the O has the line to work behind to get RB Ailym Ford rolling.

On the flip side, Illinois has a problem with penalties, the downfield passing game isn’t there, and there’s been a big, big problem putting the biscuit in the basket – it’s not great finishing off drives with points.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Illinois Will Win

Illinois has the balance.

Getting a passing game working has been a problem for past Illini teams, but former Syracuse QB Tommy DeVito has settled the position. The running game is great behind a strong line, DeVito is able to hit the third down throws, and so far the attack has thrown for 645 yards and run for 672.

It might not be an exciting style, and there might not be a ton of flash, but it’s an effective offense and a strong team that came within one late stop against Indiana away from being 3-0.

Chattanooga might be able to keep this close, but that’s not going to freak out the Illini. They’re great at grinding down games to a stop – they hold the ball for 36 minutes a game.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Chattanooga is going to make this interesting.

It’s going to get up early, it won’t let the game get out of hand, and it’s going to match Illinois drive for drive until the dam finally breaks midway through the second half.

Don’t get caught up in the final score against an FCS team. This will be a methodical, good win before going on to Wisconsin.

Virginia vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

The first game of the Tony Elliott era worked out just fine.

The Cavaliers took a commanding halftime lead on Richmond and cruised from there – and it almost all came from the running game.

There was an almost perfect balance with bomber Brennan Armstrong throwing a few touchdown passes to go along with 105 rushing yards. Perris Jones added 104, and the offense moved the ball without any problems.

The balance is big against the Illini, but more importantly will be the third down conversions. Armstrong was great against the Spiders converting 7-of-12 chances as the team held the ball for almost 33 minutes.

Control the clock on Illinois, beat Illinois. However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Illinois Will Win

Controlling the tempo against the Illini is far easier said than done.

The defense has been a rock so far against the run. Wyoming couldn’t get going, and Indiana didn’t go anywhere. Armstrong might have been able to take off and make things happen against Richmond, but he’s going to have to throw to win this.

That puts the game in the hands of the Illini defensive front that’s okay at generating pressure.

But it’s about the grind. Illinois had the ball for over 36 minutes against IU, Chase Brown has emerged as one of the nation’s better backs and Syracuse transfer Tommy DeVito has finally settled the program’s quarterback situation.

It’s all going to come down to …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. The four giveaways killed Illinois against Indiana, and there can’t be anything easy given to Virginia in this.

However, Armstrong and the passing game should keep things moving, the defensive front will lock in on Brown, and the deep passing game will overcome the power of the Illini front in a fun, tight game.

Illinois vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

Can the Indiana offense find something that works?

The running game was bad, the passing attack struggled, and the turnovers flowed freely throughout the lost 2021. As bad as the O was, the D was uglier.

It wasn’t bad against the run, but it couldn’t generate any pressure on the way to allowing just over 33 points per game. It’s going to take a little work to get this group to take over games.

The Illinois secondary will be a strength early on with a good group of veterans helped out be an improved pass rush – it held Wyoming to just 30 yards in the 38-6 Week 0 win.

As long as the Illini offense can grind it out and control the clock – the line should be able to handle the Hoosier defensive front without too much of a problem – the D should be able to take care of the rest.

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Indiana Will Win

It’s not like the Illinois offense will come out and crank up 50 points on a regular basis.

Once again the program is trying to fix the glitch with another quarterback option – Syracuse’s Tommy DeVito is an interesting option – but it’s going to be all about the running game.

Indiana has to load up against the run and do whatever it can to get to the quarterback and dare the Illini to try generating a push against the improved defensive front.

DT JH Tevis from Cal, DE Myles Jackson from UCLA, and big LeDarrius Cox from Ole Miss should make a huge improvement.

Offensively, Auburn’s Shaun Shivers from Auburn and Josh Henderson from North Carolina will make an instant impact for a running game that needed more pop.

Get anything going offensively, and that might be enough. Again, the Illinois offense won’t put up big yards and points in chunks.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

How much will it matter that Illinois was able to tune up and roll against Wyoming?

A lot.

Illinois has its quarterback now in Syracuse transfer Tommy DeVito, and Chase Brown is looking like a star after running for 151 yards and two scores.

Both offenses will be better than they were last season, but teams will get better quarterback play, better production from the backs, and …

Illinois has the better defense.

Don’t gear up for a ton of big plays and points, but it’ll be a fun, competitive battle that comes down to a few late drives and possibly a kick to end the night.

5 College Football Power Five Sleeper Teams For 2022

Which teams from the Power Five conferences will be sleepers this year? Which ones will rise up and be dangerous?

Which teams in the Power Five conferences should rise up and be sleepers in 2022? They might not win their respective conferences, but they could make a whole lot of noise.

Did anyone really see Baylor coming as a team that would take the Big 12 Championship and finish in or near the top five?

Who had Pitt winning the ACC title, or Michigan State being a Big Ten power, or Ole Miss finishing 11th in both polls?

We got the Rebels right in last year’s Power Five Sleeper Teams piece. Taking the L on Stanford, squibbed singles on Boston College and Texas Tech, and roped a triple on Purdue.

These teams almost certainly won’t win their respective conference championships, but they should be in for interesting seasons and give their fan bases a good time.

College Football Power Five Sleeper Teams

ACC: Florida State Seminoles

There was a time not all that long ago when Florida State was automatically considered a national championship contender. It had the talent, the coaching, and everything in place to be special year after year after year.

Jimbo Fisher restored the glory, but it all fell apart in the opener against Alabama to start the 2017 season, and the program never recovered.

FSU Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

The Noles won 78 games, three ACC Championships, and a national title between 2010 to 2016. Since then they’ve gone a putrid 26-33.

Florida State lost 19 games from 1987 to 2000.

Head coach Mike Norvell isn’t going to put the program back into superpower territory just yet, but after years and years and years of painful offensive line play, the Noles might really have a decent front five. At least it’s full of veterans.

[lawrence-related id=548951]

The ground attack and the offense should work just fine, the defense is loaded with experience – the starting 11 should be outstanding if the secondary can rise up – and the schedule works okay.

LSU is a problem in Week 2 in New Orleans, and road games against NC State and Miami are scary, but Clemson and Florida have to come to Tallahassee, and the team should be strong enough to pull off several wins in the 50/50 games.

For a proud program that hasn’t had a winning season in four years, this will seem like when it all starts to turn around.
