Illinois vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

So how did Michigan State do it?

How did it solve the Illinois defense, ball control style, and all that’s going into one of the biggest surprises in the 2022 college football season?

It bent but didn’t break – scoring 23 straight points after getting down 7-0 – and it made the Illini press more than they wanted to.

The Spartans hit their passes, and Purdue has to get throwing and put points on the board out of the gate.

The offense sputtered against Iowa in last week’s 24-3 loss – nothing worked – but as long as Aidan O’Connell is hitting over 60% of his passes like he normally does this should be interesting.

Illinois lost two games. Those were the two times it allowed the opposing passing games to connect on more than 53% of their throws.

But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Illinois Will Win

That’s easier said than done.

Purdue has hit a bit of a wall.

Wisconsin allowed O’Connell to hit his passes, but they didn’t really go anywhere. Iowa took out the middle man and didn’t even allow him to complete the throws.

Even with the tough loss to Michigan State, Illinois is still the best in the nation in pass defense, No. 1 in scoring defense, No. 1 in interceptions, and No. 1 in first downs allowed.

Basically, the Purdue offense fits what Illinois likes to do.

Michigan State can hit a few deep shots and pushes its passing game further. Purdue dinks and dunks, and Illinois will take it.

The completion percentage will be there for the Boilermakers, but it won’t mean what it usually does.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Purdue get out to a hot start and make Illinois open things up?

Not quite, but it’ll make things interesting.

The Illinois ground game doesn’t have to dominate, but it has to be part of a balanced attack that should be able to control the clock and the tempo. That’s Purdue’s game – it’s great in the time of possession battle – but it won’t be good enough offensively on third downs to get control.

Michigan State vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

It’s been a rough, rough stretch for the program.

The 29-7 loss to Michigan was bad, the aftermath and controversy from the problems in the tunnel was worse, and now it’s going to take a minor miracle just to go bowling.

Let’s just say the expectations are low, but the team is still good enough to pull off something big if the offense clicks.

Illinois isn’t going to run away and hide with this. As good as it has been, the offense doesn’t put up big points and the game will never be out of reach.

The great Illini D has yet to face anyone who can throw. Nebraska? Sort of, not really. Wisconsin? Nah. Iowa? Really nah. Minnesota? Indiana? The secondary might get tested for the first time.

Payton Throne has to get hot right away. He was great in the win over Wisconsin, the passing game has the ability to hit 70% of its passes, and there’s a chance the Spartans are able to connect on the deep passes Illinois can’t and won’t.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Illinois Will Win

Grind, grind, grind.

Is there any team outside of Knoxville playing with more confidence right now?

The Illini dare you to deal with their style. There won’t be anything from the Spartan ground game against this defensive front, coming up with third down conversions will be like pulling teeth, and if it seems like the Illinois O is always on the field, it’s because it will be.

Illinois is second in the nation behind Air Force in time of possession. Michigan State is the second-worst team in the country in the stat. Illinois might have the ball for over 40 minutes.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State might make this far more interesting than it might seem – at least early on.

Again, Illinois hasn’t dealt with a real passing game yet, and Michigan State will start firing away early. It’ll work for a while, but it’ll slow down as the game goes on. Even worse, the passing attack will quickly go three-and-out a few times and Illinois will use those chances to grind the game down to a nub.

It won’t be a breeze, but the Illini will keep the fun going.

Illinois vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

The defense continues to be a brick wall.

Illinois might not always be scintillating, but you know what you’re getting.

The offense is going to run, the passing game will keep everything safe as it controls the clock and has the ball for around 35 minutes. The D will do the rest.

The Illini are No. 1 in the nation in total and scoring defense, second against the run, and they’re great at forcing teams to turn it over. Nebraska doesn’t have the offense to overcome any of it.

The Husker running game will struggle to get to 100 yards, it’ll seem like the O is never on the field, and the run defense that’s the worst in the Big Ten is about to get hammered on.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers are playing better.

They might have lost to Purdue two weeks ago, but the passing game opened it up a little bit, the ground attack averaged over five yards per carry, and overall the team is doing a decent job of battling the moment.

Whether it was the rocky win over Rutgers, the strong performance by the O against Indiana, or the fight against the Boilermakers, this is a different-looking bunch – it’s having a little success.

Illinois isn’t going to run away with this even if everything is working. The score will never be too far out of reach, if at all, but …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

You can’t turn the ball over against the Illini, and Nebraska will.

The Huskers will throw well enough to matter early on, but they’ll have problems closing out drives with points. On the other side, Illinois will be Illinois and grind, grind, grind.

It’ll always have the ball, the defense will come up with two takeaways, and the time of possession battle will be monstrously tipped one way.

Minnesota vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers have their guy back.

To put it kindly, the 20-10 loss to Purdue didn’t reflect the program’s best work, but the clunker was overdue.

The team was playing at a high-level for four games, and then it lost its energy against the Boilermakers with star RB Mohamed Ibrahim out hurt. Now he’s back and ready to go.

Illinois might not be pretty, but the system works. Run, run more, play tough defense, rely on the passing game to hit the short throws, repeat. QB Tommy DeVito, though, is questionable with an ankle injury against the nation’s best defense. Even if everything is right with him, there won’t be anything happening down the field.

Granted, the Gopher defense has’t exactly dealt with the Alabamas and Ohio States of the college offense world, but it’s still fabulous allowing just 222 yards per game.

The offense leads the country in time of possession keeping the ball for 38 minutes per game, and overall, Minnesota – thanks to Ibrahim – should be able to beat Illinois at its own game.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Illinois Will Win

Minnesota is going to want to come in and get tough. That’s not going to work against this group.

Who’s playing with more confidence right now than the Illinois defense? It gave up one late touchdown drive to Indiana in the 23-20 loss, and that’s been about it.

The defense stuffed Virginia in a 24-3 win, got in a little work in the FCS paycheck game, and then basically got Paul Chryst fired with a dominant performance against Wisconsin.

You and your sewing circle could keep Iowa to six points, but throw that 9-6 win on the pile of great defensive games. Ever since the opener against Wyoming the Illini are allowing fewer than two yards per carry.

Again, though …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is playing better defense.

Illinois went to Madison and out-Wisconsined, Wisconsin. Minnesota is going to out-Illinois, Illinois.

Veteran quarterback Tanner Morgan will come up with a few more competitions, the running game will have far more juice this week, and the defense that did its share of the heavy lifting against Purdue will keep it going.

The Gophers won’t have turnover issues this week, the D will be great on third downs, and they’ll right the ship as they take back control of the Big Ten West.

It’s an Illinois game, though. Points will be scarce.

Iowa vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

The defense is still working.

The much-maligned offense had a few nice moments in the 27-14 loss to Michigan – it hit the 200-yard mark through the air for the first time all season – but it was the defense that kept the game in range.

Illinois isn’t going to wing the ball all around the yard. It can, but it’s not going to against the Hawkeye secondary. This will be about the lines, the ground games, and the ability to capitalize on mistakes. Illinois has been careful with the ball over the last few games, but it’s had a few rough patches with turnovers.

Iowa hasn’t turned it over in three weeks.

As long as the Hawkeyes can hold up against the run and force a slew of third and long plays – Illinois doesn’t push the ball downfield at all – this will be a fight deep into the fourth.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Illinois Will Win

Bret Bielema and his team went into Madison and did what Wisconsin wishes it could do.

His Illini were able to grind it out, were +3 in turnover margin, and held the supposedly biggest, baddest running game around to just two yards.

The defense is No. 1 in the nation in scoring D allowing just over eight points per game, Chase Brown and the ground attack are ultra-efficient, and more than anything else, the team knows how to maintain control.

Iowa games are low scoring defensive fights, but its D is on the field way too much thanks to an inept offense. Illinois is seventh in the nation in time of possession keeping it for close to 35 minutes per game.

So, basically …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

A week after outbadgering the Badgers, Illinois will do what Iowa wants to do, only better.

Look elsewhere if you want a slew of points. Neither passing game will take any big chances, both running games will keep giving it the old college try to kill some time, but this will be all about the defenses and field position.

Iowa has the better kicking game, it’s punting game is far superior, and it’s going to keep chipping away as the Illini defense holds firm time and again.

Illinois, though, will get that one second half touchdown Iowa won’t.
