Georgia vs Ohio State College Football Playoff Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl 5 Things To Know

Why Georgia will win the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, why Ohio State will win
College Football Playoff Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Georgia hasn’t exactly made greatness boring, but it’s not like this is a star-studded superpower with a slew of household names. It’s a rock-solid team that’s good at blocking and tackling and going about its business as it rolls towards what might just be a second straight national title. There’s one key difference from the 2021 version, though.

This one might run the table.

2022 Georgia had a perfect storm of positives to get here. Years of amazing recruiting built up the talent level, and it all matured enough to create a true Next Man Up system with future NFL stars replacing the NFL stars who left off of last year’s national champion team.

Combine that with a relatively down year by Alabama – and not having to face the Tide – a 44-year-old starting quarterback who knows what he’s doing (Stetson Bennett is actually 25), and all those new starters looking to prove the greatness of this team compared to last year, and this might be an even stronger run.

However …

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

You let them in the door. The Buckeyes were out. All it would’ve taken was USC’s Caleb Williams not hurting his hamstring, or Clemson and/or Tennessee not gacking the moment against South Carolina, or Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs making the late grab against Tennessee, or any one of a number of things that could’ve happened to put someone else in the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff.

But they’re in. They’re in the tournament at the 4, just like 2019 Alabama, and just like 2014 Ohio State – both of those teams won two games and the national title.

The team rolled through the season despite a slew of injuries, and all was set up to be the No. 2 seed. All it had to do was beat Michigan, take down Purdue in the Big Ten Championship, and it would’ve played TCU not Georgia in the CFP first round.

You have to win two no matter what, so Ohio State might as well get the Georgia game out of the way now.

There are 3.5 teams going with the same NFL talent level – Georgia, Alabama, the USC offense, and Ohio State. Even with a few key guys out – RB TreyVeon Henderson is out with a foot injury, WR Jaxson Smith-Njigba is nursing his injured hamstring as he gets ready for the NFL – the guys are still there to hang position for position with the defending national champs.

Ohio State has lived in the biggest bowls for the last 30 years. In the eight-year playoff era, it’s 7-3 in bowl games with the three losses all in the CFP. It won an epic Rose Bowl over Utah last year, lost the College Football Playoff National Championship to Alabama in 2020, and it’s in the Peach for first time ever.

Georgia has been a bowl god under Kirby Smart. The program has gone 9-3 over the last 12 bowls going back to the Mark Richt era. It won its last four – including two last season – with the last two losses the national title agains Alabama to end the 2017 season and in a tough Sugar loss to Texas in 2018. This is the program’s seventh Peach appearance, and …

This is just the second time these two have met. Georgia beat Ohio State 21-14 in the 1992 Citrus Bowl, but that’s been it for these two powerhouses.

Between playoff games and close battles that defined the narrative for the participating teams, almost all of the last several Peach Bowls have mattered.

Last year’s Michigan State win over Pitt was entertaining at the end, the Georgia win over Cincinnati in the 2020 season was good, the 2019 version – LSU blowing out Oklahoma – was interesting theater, and UCF made a whole program around the win over Auburn at the end of the 2017 season.

The first two Peach Bowls as part of the College Football Playoff were lousy. This one shouldn’t be.

Why LSU Will Win

The pressure is totally off.

That’s not necessarily a good thing – whiffing against Texas A&M in a 38-23 loss last week kept LSU from being able to make a case for the College Football Playoff with a win in the SEC Championship – but now the team can turn it loose.

This is WAY ahead of where things were supposed to be under Brian Kelly.

The first year was supposed to be good, but Alabama was supposed to be in Atlanta this Saturday. If it wasn’t Alabama, it was going to be Texas A&M. If it wasn’t A&M, if might have been Ole Miss. It certainly wasn’t supposed to be LSU coming off a dud of a 6-7 2021 and in need of a slight rebuild.

The team is playing with house money. There might not be a national championship this season, but an SEC Championship? That would be massive.

On the flip side, the pressure is off Georgia, too.

It can say it really wants to win this, but it’s in the College Football Playoff no matter what. If LSU brings the intensity, this could be more than just interesting.

Do pull this off, though, the running game has to continue to work. It’s averaging five yards per carry, and it at least has to come close. Georgia hasn’t allowed five yards per pop yet this year, but Missouri hung around averaging 4.9, Oregon ran well even though it got destroyed. Just about everyone else who couldn’t run got blasted.

That means QB Jayden Daniels has to be on the move from the start, the offense has to convert on third downs – it’s second-best in the conference at that – and it has to keep the clock moving. Georgia can strike quickly, but the more LSU can grind this out, the better.

The O should be efficient, Daniels is accurate, and …

College Football Playoff Final Top 25 Prediction
What it means for CFP: Utah beats USC for Pac-12 title

Why Georgia Will Win

You don’t think Stetson Bennett and that crew wants this?

The 2021 Georgia team was epic. It broke through and gave the school its first national championship since 1980.

It wasn’t the SEC Champion.

The 2021 Dawgs lost to Alabama 41-24 last year, and that means the 2022 version loaded with a whole slew of new starters and parts doesn’t get that. This is this team’s chance to put a stamp on its own legacy. Of course, it needs to win the national title to make this season a true success, but around that program, yeah, this matters.

Georgia has to strike fast. This isn’t exactly one of those teams that needs momentum to win, but when it gets rolling early, forget it.

LSU is hardly bad in the first quarters of games, but defensively the first is the worst allowing 71 points – it scored 74, by the way.

Georgia has outscored its opponents 101 to 16 in the first quarter and 244 to 60 in the first half.

LSU has the pop to come back and make this a battle even if it gets down, but that’s a big ask. Georgia is No. 1 in the SEC and fifth in the nation in third down conversions, No. 1 in the SEC and third overall in third down stops, and No. 1 in the SEC and seventh overall in time of possession.

Get up fast, take the air out of ball with the running game and effective drives. That starts with the lines, and it continues with Bennett who should be able to hit the third down throws against this secondary without a problem.

There won’t be any reason to take any big chances.

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Yes, LSU beat Alabama. Alabama isn’t playing defense like Georgia is. No one is playing defense like Georgia is.

It’s going to start with the nation’s second-best run defense – James Madison is No. 1, by the way. LSU is 0-2 – going to Florida State and Tennessee – when it failed to get to 140 rushing yards, and so far this year only Oregon was able to run on the Dawgs for 140 and they lost 49-3.

Daniels really is that good, and he’s going to have to get hot right away, but he can only run so much.

LSU won’t get steamrolled, but Georgia will score early and keep it all steadily going. There will be a few big plays, but it’ll be a methodical SEC Championship win.

Get comfortable. Georgia will be back in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 31st for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the first round of the College Football Playoff.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Georgia Tech is playing … well?

It won two of its last three games, backup QB Zach Gibson was solid in the 21-17 shocker over North Carolina, and the defense has stepped in a huge way after getting ripped up by Florida State in late October.

No, it doesn’t have the firepower to keep up with Georgia, and the inability to keep the chains moving on third downs could be a killer, but the pass rush is fine, the team is great in turnover margin and keeping the penalties to a minimum, and …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Georgia Will Win

Georgia Tech doesn’t have the offense to rally back.

Georgia has shown the ability to hit on the big plays down the field and crank up the scoring drives in a flash, but it should be the running game that takes over.

Miami ran for over 200 yards on the Yellow Jacket D and won easily. Florida State ran for 246 yards and won in a blowout. Overall, Georgia Tech is 0-4 when allowing over 200 rushing yards and 1-5 when giving up 150 or more – the North Carolina win last week was the outlier.

Tennessee and Oregon were the only two teams other than Samford – Georgia didn’t exactly go full force in that – to keep the Dawgs to under 150. The ground game should average over five yards per carry, the defense will care in the rivalry game – it sure did in the 45-0 win last year – and …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Get in, get this over with, and move on to the SEC Championship.

Georgia has won four straight in the series in blowout fashion, and it’ll roll here without too much of a problem.

The Georgia Tech defense will be just good enough to keep this from going crazy in the second half, but the damage will be done early.

Why Georgia Will Win

This thing is leaking oil.

Kentucky was 4-0 and rolling along, but QB Will Levis got banged up and hasn’t been totally right ever since, there have been too many turnovers, and the running game has been wildly inconsistent.

Not to school shame, but things aren’t going well when you’re losing at home to Vanderbilt.

Georgia has the East wrapped up, and all that really matters is staying healthy and getting to the SEC Championship, but it should be able to pound away on the ground, rely on the defense, and keep things conservative enough to slip on by.

Of course, Georgia will want to connect on the big plays early, too.

Tennessee put Kentucky away immediately with a few big throws, Vanderbilt ran for 264 yards last week, and everyone who came up with more than 330 yards of total offense has won.

UK is 0-4 when allowing more, and 6-0 when allowing fewer.

Georgia has yet to come up with fewer than 387, and was only under 460 once – that was the win over Tennessee.

Bowl Projections

Why Kentucky Will Win

Georgia hasn’t exactly been air tight.

The offense moves when it has to, the defense bails everyone out when mistakes are made, but the seven turnovers in the last three games are too many.

As always, Kentucky has to control the game with its style. When teams don’t come up with big yards against this D it’s because they don’t have the ball enough and don’t run enough plays.

Georgia might be able to hit the big shots, but can it get moving if it only runs 60 plays instead of 75 or so? Kentucky should keep the offense on the field for about 34 minutes or so, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Kentucky offensive line isn’t playing well enough.

The defensive front isn’t getting into the backfield – it’s not going to bother Stetson Bennett – and the running game isn’t getting going against this bunch.

Georgia will connect on two big plays and be methodical the rest of the way. The good Wildcat skill players won’t get enough time to work.

Georgia vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Georgia Will Win

The Dawgs are rolling again after owning the lines and doing a fantastic job of hitting the deep shot in the first half of the 27-13 win over Tennessee. Most importantly, the defense kept the high-powered Vols passing game to under 200 yards.

This just in – Mississippi State likes to throw the ball.

The MSU Bulldogs aren’t going to push the ball deep all that often, but they’re going to dink and dunk to slowly move the ball down the field. That’s fine – the Georgia defensive backs can tackle.

There’s a Miss State running game, but it’s not going to do anything on a consistent basis against the Georgia defensive front. To win, MSU has to hit at least 68% of its passes for 320 yards or more – it’s 6-0 when throwing for over 300 yards and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Georgia has yet to allow anyone to come up with more than 275.

But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Will there be a Georgia letdown?

Coming off the big win over Florida in the annual rivalry and the most watched game of the year in the showdown against Tennessee, the Dawgs now have their path clear. All they have to do is get to the SEC Championship, win it, and they’re in.

For all the amazing things the No. 1 team in the country can do, it’s not generating enough steady pressure. No, Mississippi State isn’t going to hit the deep shots, but as long as QB Will Rogers is able to get time to connect on midrange throws, this can work.

There were two against the Vols, but Georgia generally doesn’t come up with a slew of takeaways. Rogers has to be careful with the ball, hit his third down throws, and the home aspect has to matter.

Mississippi State is 5-0 at home, 1-3 on the road, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia is a wee bit better than anyone who made the trip to Starkville so far.

It might have a little problem getting going early on – again, don’t be stunned if there’s a little bit of an intensity lag – but it’ll come.

Stetson Bennett will continue to be solid, the defense will bend but won’t break enough to matter, and it’ll be a methodical win to lock up the SEC East.

Tennessee vs Georgia Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Wait, Tennessee has a defense, too?

Granted, the stats are a tad skewed because everyone has to bomb away to keep up against the high-powered Volunteer attack, but last week Kentucky rolled into Knoxville with the potential No. 1 overall pick in QB Will Levis, and an offensive style that was supposed to control the game, and none of it worked.

Tennessee’s offense didn’t have to go insane – it was only the second time all year the attack didn’t get to 500 yards – and it was still a light and breezy 44-6 win partly because the defense came up with three takeaways and held the Wildcats to just 205 yards of total offense.

No one’s expecting the 2000 Baltimore Raven D to show up against Georgia, but Tennessee doesn’t need to do anything amazing. It just has to force a few takeaways – two or more so far in every game but two – and it has to keep being great at coming up with third down stops. Basically, just hold serve once in a while.

Keep the pressure on with the offense, make Georgia press, and turn this into a shootout. Tennessee is better equipped for that.

Why Georgia Will Win

Will Oregon Georgia show up?

With some due respect to the road game at South Carolina and last week’s date against Florida, it’s not like this has been the toughest of roads for the Dawgs.

They went through the motions against Kent State and Missouri, picked it back up, and now – turnovers against Florida aside – they appear to be ready to go back to being the razor-sharp machine that ripped through Oregon 49-3 to start the season.

It’s like they’ve been building for this, and now it’s time to play again.

Lost in all of the Tennessee love right now is that 1) Alabama’s secondary can be roasted deep – it was a perfect fit for the Vol passing game – and 2) It was a wee bit of a fight to get past Pitt and Florida.

There was a dominant road win at LSU, and the team has shown enough to earn the No. 1 spot in the first round of College Football Playoff rankings, but it hasn’t seen a D anywhere close to this.

Forget about the ground game against this bunch – an underappreciated key cog that makes the Vol attack go – the offense will seem like it’s never on the field against an offense that holds the ball for 35 minutes per game, the defense is second in the nation behind Illinois in points allowed, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Great, now you made it mad.

It’s not like Georgia was going to come into this without being fulled focused, but you don’t think those rankings on Monday night might have irked the supposed No. 3 team in America just a wee bit? However …

Georgia has only been challenged once this year – Missouri hit 63% of its passes in the 26-22 loss. It wasn’t pushed like everyone thinks in the win over Kent State, but it was hardly a smooth effort. The Golden Flashes hit 68% of their throws.

Those were the only two times this season against FBS teams Georgia allowed anyone to hit the 60% mark, and now it’s going against the most efficient passing game in America with the hottest quarterback going.

Hendon Hooker will hit at least 65% of his throws and the offense will work for stretches, but the storyline will quickly pivot to the other side.

Y’all going to count out old Stetson Bennett again?

Georgia is No. 1 in the SEC in third down conversions, it’s second in the nation in total offense behind that team on the other side of the field, and the environment will be next-level jacked like nothing this Tennessee team has dealt with – the LSU game wasn’t at night.

Hooker will be terrific, and the Vols will have their moments, but Georgia’s offense will be on the field way too much.
