Georgia vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Georgia Will Win

The Dawgs are rolling again after owning the lines and doing a fantastic job of hitting the deep shot in the first half of the 27-13 win over Tennessee. Most importantly, the defense kept the high-powered Vols passing game to under 200 yards.

This just in – Mississippi State likes to throw the ball.

The MSU Bulldogs aren’t going to push the ball deep all that often, but they’re going to dink and dunk to slowly move the ball down the field. That’s fine – the Georgia defensive backs can tackle.

There’s a Miss State running game, but it’s not going to do anything on a consistent basis against the Georgia defensive front. To win, MSU has to hit at least 68% of its passes for 320 yards or more – it’s 6-0 when throwing for over 300 yards and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Georgia has yet to allow anyone to come up with more than 275.

But …

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Will there be a Georgia letdown?

Coming off the big win over Florida in the annual rivalry and the most watched game of the year in the showdown against Tennessee, the Dawgs now have their path clear. All they have to do is get to the SEC Championship, win it, and they’re in.

For all the amazing things the No. 1 team in the country can do, it’s not generating enough steady pressure. No, Mississippi State isn’t going to hit the deep shots, but as long as QB Will Rogers is able to get time to connect on midrange throws, this can work.

There were two against the Vols, but Georgia generally doesn’t come up with a slew of takeaways. Rogers has to be careful with the ball, hit his third down throws, and the home aspect has to matter.

Mississippi State is 5-0 at home, 1-3 on the road, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia is a wee bit better than anyone who made the trip to Starkville so far.

It might have a little problem getting going early on – again, don’t be stunned if there’s a little bit of an intensity lag – but it’ll come.

Stetson Bennett will continue to be solid, the defense will bend but won’t break enough to matter, and it’ll be a methodical win to lock up the SEC East.

Georgia vs Mississippi State: 5 reasons why UGA wins

Five reasons why the Dawgs leave Starkville with a win…

Georgia football (9-0) will take its new No. 1 College Football Playoff ranking to Starkville for a matchup with the Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-3) on Saturday.

UGA is rolling off of five-straight SEC wins capped off with a 27-13 beat down on formerly No. 1 Tennessee a week ago. MSU is coming off of a 39-33 overtime win over Auburn in Week 10.

The game is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. Georgia is a 16.5 point favorite to win this game, per BetMGM. The over/under is set at 53.5.

Here’s why Georgia avoids the letdown and beats Mississippi State to move to 10-0:

Watch: Georgia sack seals 31-24 win vs. Mississippi State

Check out Georgia’s sack that sealed a close win for the Bulldogs vs. Mississippi State in Athens. Details and analysis here.

I don’t think anyone saw this game shaking out the way it did but here we are, four pressure-filled quarters later and Georgia gets a close win at home vs. Mississippi State 31-24.

The Bulldogs rushing attack was stuffed, only gaining eight yards the entire game, but JT Daniels was incredible in his first career start as a Georgia Bulldog, he completed 28 of 38 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns.

Like the running game, the heralded UGA defense struggled mightily, especially on getting Mississippi State off the field.

The Bulldogs from Starkville converted on 7 of 13 first downs on their way to 358 total yards, including 336 yards passing and 22 yards rushing.

But even in a game where things didn’t go according to plan, the Georgia defense came up clutch when the team needed it most, sacking MSU quarterback Will Rodgers to seal the game for the Dawgs.

What a play by star linebacker and game captain Azeez Ojulari.

Watch it here:

I loved what I saw from JT Daniels and these Bulldog receivers tonight.

Freshman Trey Burton had 8 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns while star sophomore George Pickens caught 8 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Things are looking good for 2021, DawgNation!

Statistical breakdown: How Georgia and Mississippi State stack up

A statistical breakdown of how Georgia football and Mississippi State match up heading into Saturday’s matchup.

The No. 13 Georgia Bulldogs (4-2, 4-2) dropped eight spots in the national polls after a tough 44 – 28 loss to the Florida Gators.  Following multiple positive COVID-19 test results, last weeks game against Missouri was cancelled but the Bulldogs are back in action tonight.

The Dawgs are set to unveil 5-star USC transfer quarterback JT Daniels for the first time this year as they face off against the unranked Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-4, 2-4).

Saturday’s matchup is set to kickoff at 7:30 P.M. ET on SEC Network.

Here’s a look at the statistical breakdown between the two teams for almost every major category.

Why Georgia Will Win

Mississippi State’s offense isn’t just bad, it’s totally failing.

It’s been able to score a little bit with a win over Vanderbilt last week, but it did it with 204 yards of total offense, marking the fourth straight game with fewer than 300 yards of total O.

Georgia’s defense might be banged up, and there might be a whole lot of concerns on the offensive side, but this is still a very good, very talented group that couldn’t handle Alabama or Florida. The D had no issues in the other four games, holding everyone else to fewer than 300 yards of offense.

The Bulldog pressure and pass rush should be able to bother the Mississippi State backfield, there’s absolutely no running game to worry about, and this isn’t going to be the week the Mike Leach attack starts to work.

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Mississippi State defense is still doing a strong job.

It gets lost because all of the attention is on the pathetic offensive production, but the defensive side continues to fight the good fight. It was able to hold Alabama to under 500 yards – barely, but it did it – and while it allowed too many passing yards against Vanderbilt, overall, the D is still great against the run and it has the ability to keep the score low.

Georgia is still going to be messing around with a quarterback situation that’s going to be an issue for the rest of the season. Stetson Bennett is trying to get back from a shoulder injury, the fans are waiting for another option to step up, and no matter what, there’s not enough of a passing game for this MSU secondary to worry about.

What’s Going To Happen

These two haven’t played as often as you might think. This is just the 25th meeting with Georgia winning 11 of the last 12 going back to 1974 and being 18-6 overall after losing 9-0 back in 1914.

Georgia won’t be anything special this week offensively, and it won’t have to be. The defense will keep the Mississippi State O that can’t push the ball down the field under wraps.
