Tennessee vs Georgia Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Wait, Tennessee has a defense, too?

Granted, the stats are a tad skewed because everyone has to bomb away to keep up against the high-powered Volunteer attack, but last week Kentucky rolled into Knoxville with the potential No. 1 overall pick in QB Will Levis, and an offensive style that was supposed to control the game, and none of it worked.

Tennessee’s offense didn’t have to go insane – it was only the second time all year the attack didn’t get to 500 yards – and it was still a light and breezy 44-6 win partly because the defense came up with three takeaways and held the Wildcats to just 205 yards of total offense.

No one’s expecting the 2000 Baltimore Raven D to show up against Georgia, but Tennessee doesn’t need to do anything amazing. It just has to force a few takeaways – two or more so far in every game but two – and it has to keep being great at coming up with third down stops. Basically, just hold serve once in a while.

Keep the pressure on with the offense, make Georgia press, and turn this into a shootout. Tennessee is better equipped for that.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Georgia Will Win

Will Oregon Georgia show up?

With some due respect to the road game at South Carolina and last week’s date against Florida, it’s not like this has been the toughest of roads for the Dawgs.

They went through the motions against Kent State and Missouri, picked it back up, and now – turnovers against Florida aside – they appear to be ready to go back to being the razor-sharp machine that ripped through Oregon 49-3 to start the season.

It’s like they’ve been building for this, and now it’s time to play again.

Lost in all of the Tennessee love right now is that 1) Alabama’s secondary can be roasted deep – it was a perfect fit for the Vol passing game – and 2) It was a wee bit of a fight to get past Pitt and Florida.

There was a dominant road win at LSU, and the team has shown enough to earn the No. 1 spot in the first round of College Football Playoff rankings, but it hasn’t seen a D anywhere close to this.

Forget about the ground game against this bunch – an underappreciated key cog that makes the Vol attack go – the offense will seem like it’s never on the field against an offense that holds the ball for 35 minutes per game, the defense is second in the nation behind Illinois in points allowed, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Great, now you made it mad.

It’s not like Georgia was going to come into this without being fulled focused, but you don’t think those rankings on Monday night might have irked the supposed No. 3 team in America just a wee bit? However …

Georgia has only been challenged once this year – Missouri hit 63% of its passes in the 26-22 loss. It wasn’t pushed like everyone thinks in the win over Kent State, but it was hardly a smooth effort. The Golden Flashes hit 68% of their throws.

Those were the only two times this season against FBS teams Georgia allowed anyone to hit the 60% mark, and now it’s going against the most efficient passing game in America with the hottest quarterback going.

Hendon Hooker will hit at least 65% of his throws and the offense will work for stretches, but the storyline will quickly pivot to the other side.

Y’all going to count out old Stetson Bennett again?

Georgia is No. 1 in the SEC in third down conversions, it’s second in the nation in total offense behind that team on the other side of the field, and the environment will be next-level jacked like nothing this Tennessee team has dealt with – the LSU game wasn’t at night.

Hooker will be terrific, and the Vols will have their moments, but Georgia’s offense will be on the field way too much.

Week 10’s expert picks from the College Wire SEC editors

Does anyone dare take the Bayou Bengals at home?

It is “Championship Week” in the SEC, at least it could play out that way. The LSU Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs are hosting divisional foes in what could determine the SEC Championship game contenders.

It will start at 2:30 p.m. CT in Athens when the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers travel to Sanford Stadium to take on the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs. That evening the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide head to Death Valley to take on the No. 10 LSU Tigers from Tigers Stadium. The winners of each game will control their destiny to compete for the conference title in the SEC Championship game on Dec. 3.

There are still plenty of games left on the schedule but those could go a long way in determining the conference champion as well as College Football Playoff seeding.

The two early games feature the Kentucky Wildcats at the Missouri Tigers and the Florida Gators at the Texas A&M Aggies in the 11:00 a.m. CT slot. The lone nonconference game pits the Liberty Flames against the Arkansas Razorbacks at 3:00 p.m. CT.

The final two games kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT with South Carolina Gamecocks facing the Vanderbilt Commodores. The other contest has the Auburn Tigers traveling to face off with the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Stark Vegas. Auburn fired head coach Bryan Harsin on Monday and also hired Mississippi State AD John Cohen for the same job with the Tigers.

There is no shortage of intriguing storylines with this set of games on the docket. As usual, our SEC editorial team made their picks in each of the seven games on the Week 10 schedule.

Is it LSU’s time to take back over the SEC West or will Alabama continue to win the West?

Tennessee vs Georgia Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Georgia has lost nine straight and 17 of the last 18 thanks to a defense that can’t stop anyone.

The Bulldogs are shooting okay, and they’re hovering around 70 points per game on a regular basis – but usually coming up just short of that – but everyone is able to move the ball around at will against this D.

Florida came up with 20 assists while hitting 52% from the field. Texas A&M made 56% of its shots helped by 21 assists. Ole Miss made 56% of its shots, LSU hit 49%, and South Carolina made 52%, and …

It’s the worst defense in the SEC for a reason, and Tennessee is about to have some fun.

Tennessee has won seven of its last eight games, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Georgia Will Win

For all of the great things Tennessee is doing, it’s not making a ton of shots.

It’s scoring, but it’s struggling from the field – it hasn’t hit 50% in any of its last seven games – because it’s not coming up with the steals like it did for a nice stretch in early February. It’s also not moving the ball around like it normally does.

Normally a lock to come up with double-digit assists, it failed to get to ten in two of the last three games, the offense struggled, the threes weren’t quite there, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, those two games were against Auburn and Arkansas, and Georgia isn’t 45 miles from being in the same area code as either of those two defensively.

The Vols might be a bit inconsistent in a slew of ways, but they’re about to go off on a Georgia defense that just can’t seem to stop anyone from scoring easily.

Why Georgia Will Win

The Bulldogs are playing well. They’ve won three straight as the hot shooting over the second half of the season continues, but more than anything else, they’re nailing their threes.

Hitting from the outside hasn’t been a part of the fun this season, but they’re been brilliant from the outside lately, connecting on over 45% and nailing over half of their shots overall. The defense might not be anything special, and there aren’t enough mistakes being forced, but if the team is making shots, it wins.

Shock of shocks, Georgia is 9-1 when it makes 48% or more of is shots. However …

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vols have a dominant defense.

Tennessee is fantastic at forcing mistakes, it leads the SEC in field goal percentage defense, and it’s been able to holed everyone to 75 points and fewer this year.

How good is this D at closing out on the shooters? No one has hit more than 25% from three in the last four games, and only two teams have hit more than 40% from the field in six of the last eight games.

The Tennessee O has been a bit inconsistent, and the threes are hit-or-miss, but the defense is usually able to clean up the messes.

What’s Going To Happen

As hot as Georgia is – it rolled the Ole Miss team that beat the Vols a few days later – the offense isn’t going to keep it all going. The Bulldogs don’t have be hot from the field to win – they got by Kentucky despite struggling – but that’s not going to work this time around.

The Vols aren’t going to have an easy time for about 30 minutes, but they’ll pull away late with the D creating enough easy points to get by.

Tennessee (2-0) vs Georgia (2-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Tennessee Will Win

It’s early, but Tennessee is doing some of the key basics right

It was hard for South Carolina and Missouri to pull off upsets when the Vols weren’t screwing up. Tennessee is +3 so far in turnover margin without a giveaway so far. Combine that with just nine penalties, and there shouldn’t be too many breaks for the Dawgs.

The Vols have to pound away with a running game that pushed through Missouri for 232 yards and four touchdowns, QB Jarrett Guarantano is playing well enough to keep things moving, and overall, the team is … competent.

That’s not a knock. Tennessee is starting to finally look and play like Tennessee is supposed to.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Georgia Will Win

Stetson Bennett has been terrific.

The Georgia offense has been great for the last six quarters, stepping up against Arkansas after Bennett took over, and it was balanced enough to own Auburn throughout last week in a 27-6 win.

Bennett has hit 65% of his passes for 451 yards and three scores with no picks so far, and he’s hitting enough downfield throws to open the attack up more than it did last year.

The run defense has been a rock – allowing just 2.3 yards per carry and 116 total yards with no touchdowns – and its showing as the Bulldogs are wearing down teams so far. The Georgia offense has held on to the ball for almost 35 minutes per game, and Tennessee isn’t converting on enough third downs.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia will have the ball more, and it’ll show as the game goes on.

Tennessee will hang punch for punch for the first quarter, but Bennett will connect on one big play to break the game open, at least a bit. It’ll never be a comfortable lead for the Dawgs until late, but the defense will come up with enough stops to maintain control.
