Alex Smith has made a courageous rehab from a life-threatening injury but he’ll be the backup quarterback in Washington after Ron Rivera named Dwayne Haskins the starter for Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Dwayne’s lived up to everything we talked about in January,” Rivera said, via Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

As a rookie, Haskins had an up-and-down season but he’ll have Terry McLaurin at his disposal to help speed up his learning curve.

In his lone matchup with the Eagles last year, the 2019 Week 15 matchup, The Ohio State product completed 19 of 28 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-27 loss to Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson calls Carson Wentz’s injury ‘nothing major’; Expects him to be ready for Washington in Week 1

Doug Pederson says Carson Wentz will be ready for Week 1

[jwplayer ahyDsZfV]

Eagles fans were thrown into a frenzy over the weekend when star quarterback Carson Wentz sat out the team’s end of training camp scrimmage with what was described as a lower-body injury.

For a guy constantly fighting off the notion that he’s injury-prone, Wentz landing on the injury report brought back some of those feelings that make Eagles fans queasy when the topic of the franchise signal-caller possibly missing any more extended time due to injury.

On Tuesday, Doug Pederson calmed some of the fans worry telling the media during a zoom session that Wentz injury was minor and he’d be ready to face the Washington Football Team in less than two weeks.

Likely just a rest day, Wentz is the team’s franchise star and as the Eagles continue to figure out who’ll start at left tackle, placing him in the way of any unnecessary risk going forward would be counterproductive to the goals at hand.

Eagles’ WR Jalen Reagor listed as week to week with a torn labrum

Jalen Reagor listed as week to week with a shoulder injury

The Philadelphia Eagles are in regular-season mode and as the Birds begin preparation for their season opener at Washington, the team is hoping for some good news regarding Jalen Reagor.

Reagor suffered a partially torn labrum while attempting to make a tackle after a Jalen Hurts interception in Sunday’s scrimmage. After some initial concern that he might require surgery Jeff McLane is reporting that Reagor will be week to week.

The Eagles are counting on Reagor to add explosiveness to an offense that struggled with quick score drives once DeSean Jackson was lost for the season. With Reagor’s four week prognosis, he’ll likely miss the Washinton matchup and the Eagles home opener against the Rams.

Eagles’ Miles Sanders among second-year running backs set for breakout season in 2020

Miles Sanders among running backs set for a breakout season in 2020

[jwplayer nf6ilR93]

Josh Jacobs was the big name rookie running back in the NFL last season and he didn’t disappoint, as the Las Vegas Raiders star finished his rookie season with 1,150 rushing yards and was second in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.

Jacobs did most of his damage early on, while a star was born in Philadelphia, as Miles Sanders came on after Jordan Howard’s injury and paired with Carson Wentz to help carry the Eagles offense into the playoffs.

Sanders is preparing for an MVP season and one former NFL running back believes the Eagles star will have a breakout campaign. Maurice Jones-Drew is an analyst for NFL.com and recently broke down three second-year running backs set for breakout seasons.

Sanders made the list, joined by the Bills Devin Singletary and the Bears David Montgomery.

Miles Sanders
Philadelphia Eagles · RB
Year 1: 16 games | 179 att | 818 rush yds | 4.6 ypc | 3 rush TDs | 50 rec | 509 rec yds | 3 rec TDs

Sanders played well behind an Eagles’ offensive line that was among the best in the league in run-blocking in 2019. With 38-year-old veteran Jason Peters swinging inside to take over for injured guard Brandon Brooks, the second-year running back will have to do more and create more lanes on his own. The Eagles have shuffled through running backs over the last five seasons, so the pressure is on Sanders to solidify himself as a mainstay in the backfield. If he doesn’t, the Eagles will have no issue moving on, like they’ve done in the past. That should be a big motivator for Sanders. I think he’ll rise to the challenge, even with the Eagles adding to the passing game this offseason in an effort to get Carson Wentz back to the MVP form he displayed in 2017 before his season-ending knee injury. That said, I predict Sanders will earn 1,500 scrimmage yards, including 1,000 rushing yards (which would make him Philly’s first 1,000-yard rusher since LeSean McCoy in 2014) and 10 total TDs.

Sanders could be the running back that finally allows the Eagles to do away with their running back by committee approach. Sanders has the potential to be a top-10 running back in 2020 and if he can avoid nagging injuries, could push for 1,000+ yards rushing and receiving.

East-West Shrine Game 2020: 7 players for the Eagles to watch

Former Ohio State receiver Binjimen Victor among the players to watch in East-West Shrine Game

The NFL season is down to the final four teams, but for the other 28 franchises, the process of draft preparation has begun and that means scouting the collegiate all-star games.

The 2020 East-West Shrine Game is here and although it’s not the Reese Senior Bowl, a ton of mid-round and late-round prospects have taken advantage of the opportunity to put in work in front of the NFL scouts, coaches and executives.

Notable names to achieve greatness after the East-West Shrine Game include Jimmy Garoppolo, who has the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.

Eagles stars Brandon Brooks and Avonte Maddox are also East-West Shrine alums, so the Birds have experience in plucking talent from this game.

Former Purdue signal-caller David Blough turned a 10-of-15, 149 yards and two touchdowns performance in last year’s game into five appearances for the Detroit Lions this season.

With Philadelphia currently having 10 draft picks and several in the later rounds, here are 7 players the Eagles and fans should keep an eye on.

***

1. Binjimen Victor, WR, Ohio State

Victor is an intriguing prospect and his Buckeye DNA gives him the benefit of the doubt when breaking down his tape and abilities on the outside.

Although not a star at Ohio State, Victor is a crisp route runner who is fluid coming out of the break with very sure hands. As a Senior for the Big 10 Champions, Victor had 35 catches for 573 yards and six touchdowns.

2020 NFL draft: Top prospects to watch in National Championship Game

On Monday night, the eyes of the college and NFL world will be on the Louisiana Superdome as LSU and Clemson battle for the College Football National Championship.

There will be plenty NFL scouts in attendance and with the Eagles have several needs, Monday night will be a prime opportunity to scout some of college football best athletes.

Here are a few of the top prospects that can help the Eagles to watch courtesy of the Draft Wire:

1. Justin Jefferson — WR — LSU

The Eagles can use an explosive playmaker on the outside and Justin Jefferson is a huge reason that Joe Burrow will be the No. 1 pick. Jefferson can run every route, he creates big plays and his explosiveness would put the Eagles offense on another level.

Eagles Wild Card Inactives: Zach Ertz officially active for matchup vs. Seahawks

Zach Ertz officially active for Eagles vs. Seahawks

The Philadelphia Eagles have released their list of inactives for the teams game against the Seattle Seahawks and Zach Ertz will, in fact, start at tight end.

Lane Johnson will not play with a high ankle sprain.

Other inactives for the Eagles included quarterback Nate Sudfeld, wide receiver Nelson Agholor, running back Elijah Holyfield, defensive end Shareef Miller, defensive end Genard Avery and guard Sua Opeta.

The Seattle Seahawks downgraded wideout Jaron Brown (knee sprain) to out versus the Eagles, guard Mike Iupati (neck) is out as well, NFL Network’s Omar Ruiz reported.

Eagles D-Line did end-of-practice conditioning drills to prepare for Russell Wilson

Eagles D-Line did end-of-practice conditioning drills to prepare for Russell Wilson

The Philadelphia Eagles defensive line did a solid job in their first matchup with Russell Wilson in Week 12 and according to Mike Garafalo of the NFL Network, the Birds put in extra work this week to prepare.

In the first matchup, a 17-9 Seahawks win over the Eagles, Russell Wilson threw just one touchdown pass and was sacked six times as Jim Schwartz blitzed him on nearly half of the Seahawks’ pass plays.

The Eagles blitzed Wilson on 14 of 31 pass plays (45.2 percent) and it worked, as the Seahawks star was 5-for-10 for 102 yards and one touchdown. Four of the Eagles sacks on Wilson came via the blitz as well.

Schwartz now has the conundrum of bringing the pressure again or allowing his front four to get pressure on Wilson while focusing on not giving up the big play downfield.
